First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Greetings and an introduction

Hello Joofjoof! Nice to meet you. I'd like to introduce myself. I'm a Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons editor of about 16 years experience. I've written maybe 80 articles on the EN Wikipedia (listed on my EN user page), I've uploaded maybe 3000 images to illustrate people's articles (most of them are on my Commons user page, and most are still the main image for each of the articles in question, on EN and often on other language Wikipedias). Here on Commons I've been a Commons:License reviewer for a number of years, which I'm fairly proficient at, I have reviewed a similar number of images that other people uploaded, and have reviewed a fair number of other people applying to become License reviewers. People tell me I'm reasonably good at finding free images.

I see you nominated a couple of images that I uploaded, File:Chaz Stevens with Pole cap.jpg and File:Chaz Stevens with Pole cap (cropped).jpg for speedy deletion. ‎The reason I learned this is that one of them vanished from the lead of Chaz Stevens, which is an article I've been working on for three months now (I'm not very fast!), and have nominated for Wikipedia:Did you know with the other image. I wasn't notified otherwise. Speedy deletion nominations don't notify the uploader. If I hadn't noticed they would just have silently disappeared, and the article would have been noticeably worse, not to mention the DYK nomination. Which would make me feel rather bad, I admit.

Now image copyright is complex; the laws are complex, and vary between countries, there are many people who claim to release copyright to images that they don't own, and so forth. No one can upload many images from many different sources without making some mistakes occasionally. Even though I'm pretty sure that in this case I have not made a mistake (the speedy nominations are now regular deletion discussions, where I give my reasoning), I have certainly made mistakes before, and I'm sure I will again. I would, however, like the opportunity to discuss them when they happen, and, hopefully, convince you, or at least the closing admin. You'll notice I have numerous image deletion notifications on my user page and most are still blue links, in other words the images were kept. So when I get the chance to discuss, it usually works. Not always, but often. So I'm hoping that by introducing myself, maybe next time - because there will be a next time, I upload many images! - we'll be able to discuss it, whether on my talk page or in a regular deletion discussion, rather than another speedy. I recognize this might not work, of course, for example, the admin who speedily deleted one of the images from your nomination was User:Yann, whom I'm pretty sure I've interacted with before, and I had hoped would remember me, but apparently not. Licenses, free and non-free, may seem clear at first; the actual situation is often more complicated. I'm happy to discuss this - thanks again for reaching out. Misuse of SVG

Hi Joofjoof. I found that you uploaded some SVG files which are photographs. (like File:Sandy Peters-Phillips with Amb. Hirayama.svg) However SVG is a file format for vector graphics. (see Commons:File types and Help:SVG) It should not be used for photographs. You may use some tools to extract images from pdfs (like https://tools.pdf24.org/en/extract-images). Who on the photo?

Hi Joofjoof, maybe you can help me out. I at least give it a try. When Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro visited Suriname on 20 January 2022 he met a lot of government officials. On this photo you see to the right five persons, of whom at least four are government ministers: Albert Ramdin, Krishna Mathoera, Kenneth Amoksi (I think, maybe you can check), a lady and Riad Nurmohamed. In such a row I would think that the missing lady is a minister too, but I'am starting to doubt, because I cannot find similarities with sitting ministers. She can be seen as the second last one on the row as well here and here. Individual ministers can be found e.g. here and here. Do you have a good eye for peoples' faces and do you know who she is? No man, this is why i haven't added it or any other recently added by them, look at the bottom left of the image, US Embassy here are being lazy as eff, i even messaged them multiple times to stop being idiots and use their own photographers, this new ambassador is not very bright.....This applies to the Manoa and Naiqama images too Stemoc 04:33, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
