Uploaded a .djvu book but it won't display

This upload File:Every Woman's Encyclopedia Volume 2.djvu is from Internet Archive but it doesn't display properly. Can someone advise what to do?— Ineuw talk 10:22, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is a warning: "This file type may contain malicious code. By executing it, your system may be compromised." Ruslik0 (talk) 20:39, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Pages 747-752 are corrupted/truncated, which is probably why Mediawiki errors out in an abundance of caution instead of displaying a thumbnail or viewer. SilverbackNettalk 01:47, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@SilverbackNet: Thanks for the explanation. Will look for another copy.— Ineuw talk 14:20, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Uploaded an undamaged version and it would be best if it is deleted.— Ineuw talk 05:32, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How do I forgive myself for uploading copyrighted images?

--Commons is in a thing (talk) 19:45, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Commons is in a thing: You don't need to do anything, other than don't do it any more. If you are unsure about a copyright, you can ask at COM:VPC before uploading. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:47, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Image upload

I have translated an image, a graphic illustration of a biological cycle, into an indic language, Odia, can upload that image to the page I intended? If yes how, if no why not? Anos Vordigoad (talk) 05:10, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Could it be uploaded ???

Hi, I need help to clarify if I can upload this file to commons. It is an old article, the author is probably dead, there is no reference about dates, and its text, pictures, diagrams are very useful for the firearms theme. Any help will be welcome. --Marcric (talk) 19:38, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The article was published in 1974 and unlikely to be in public domain. Ruslik0 (talk) 10:17, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcric: to add to what Ruslik0 said, the author is probably dead is immaterial. The author has probably been dead for more than 70 years would be worth consideration, but we don’t generally make that assumption unless the work in question was created at least 120 years ago.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:50, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks both !!! 👍 --Marcric (talk) 19:02, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Calm down and forget it. --Achim (talk) 22:49, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any difference ??

Hi, I know that cartridge sketches are ineligible for copyright because they are just a bunch of lines and text. But if the "sketch" uses CAD ??

For sure, the final quality is much better, but the argument remains the same: it is just a bunch of lines and text the computer put together under someone else (unknown) "orders".

Here is an example: It is not a photo, it is a CAD sketch made by someone unknown. Could it be classified as {{PD-ineligible}} or {{PD-shape}}, or both ???

--Marcric (talk) 22:57, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • There is quite a bit of creativity in that image, including the particular positioning of the cartridges relative to the box. I think it's copyrightable because of the composition. If you had two cartridges and a box and made a similar image, you'd probably be OK, because the creative element is by the photographer/CAD designer; the cartridges and box are not themselves copyrightable, in my opinion. - Jmabel ! talk 00:54, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: Thanks, but the question remains... Can I upload it and use those tags ??? If so, which ? Or should be both ??? --Marcric (talk) 19:00, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In fact I need the cartridge image... If I isolate one single cartridge and then upload it ??? --Marcric (talk) 19:03, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcric: I would think isolating one cartridge would be fine: that removes the composition issue; but I could imagine an argument that because this is CAD rather than photography that introduces some level of creativity that makes it eligible for copyright. You might want to take that question to Commons:Village pump/Copyright, where there is more expertise. - Jmabel ! talk 22:50, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Lets see. --Marcric (talk) 23:26, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

VisualFileChange

What does this VisualFileChange gadget do? Does it help to add categories and descriptions? How do I make it work? Can someone help? Thank you. Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 04:46, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Prahlad balaji: Have you read Help:VisualFileChange.js? Yes, it can help to add categories, and can help to mass-edit descriptions. Typical uses are:
  • Append a set of categories to some or all files found by a particular search.
  • Add a warning template of some sort to some or all of the files in a particular category.
  • Change the attribution requested on some or all of the files uploaded by a particular user.
It's a bit clumsy, but it's powerful.
As to how to install, I think Help:VisualFileChange.js#Step 0: How to Install is pretty clear; please do read that help document and come back here if you still have some specific questions. - Jmabel ! talk 16:11, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it works! Thank you. Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 18:17, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Logo Update

I uploaded a logo So I can update the company page where I work. I want to make sure I did it right. Here is the company logo https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3d/CCP_Logo_V-CMYK-B.png

Thank you! Patricia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pfernandez89 (talk • contribs) 04:58, 4 November 2020‎ (UTC)[reply]

  1. @Pfernandez89: You need Categories.
  2. You say it is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International. That means someone who holds the copyright and has granted that license, but I see no indication of who holds the copyright. "Source" should not be the vacuous "Company". It should be a page where the logo can be found and where it is indicated that this license is offered.
Assuming that the logo is, indeed, copyrighted (it's right near the threshold of originality to claim copyright), if there is no online indication that this license is offered, you need to go through the COM:OTRS process.
Also, you probably want to add {{Trademark}} to that page.

I don't know information about the author of one picture (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ronald_Nyholm.jpg). I brought this photo from book (look source). And I don't know information about license. What I must do? Sincerely, Egor --Ehorkaskier (talk) 17:32, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Almost no book published in the last 40 years is out of copyright; many as old as dating from the early 20th century are still in copyright, depending on the country of publication. - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello I have uploaded two images and the bot has informed me that I need to apply copyright tags. Though I have read the documentation I do not understand how to do this. I am however confident that both images can go on Wikipedia. The files are JILA_Journal_of_the_Institute_of_Landscape_Architects_March_1955.jpg [I own the document and took the photo. The original is equivalent to a book cover and, as such, is permitted on Wikipedia. I am happy for it to be creative commons share alike] First Institute of Landscape Architects ILA constitution c1930.pdf [I own the document and took the photo. The document has no author, because it was produced by an organisation (in 1930, so out of copyright after 70 years). I am happy for it to be creative commons share alike] If you agree that both images can go on Wikipedia please advise - which license tags to use, and - how to apply them. The ILA, which produced the original files, no longer exists

Thank you User TomTurner2 — Preceding unsigned comment added by TomTurner2 (talk • contribs) 21:54, 4 November 2020‎ (UTC)[reply]

Thank you talk. Yes I am a UK-based user and the two images were published in the UK. Re the cover of the March 1955 issue, I took the photograph but did not create the cover. Do you agree that it would be best for me re-upload the images to Wikipedia (instead of to Wikimedia Commons)? I could then use the tags you recommend. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TomTurner2 (talk • contribs) 07:26, 5 November 2020‎ (UTC)[reply]

@TomTurner2: File:First Institute of Landscape Architects ILA constitution c1930.pdf is probably fine here; tag it with {{PD-old-70}} and remove the warning. Move your remarks on permissions into the permission field: they are sitting where an actual tag belongs.
File:JILA Journal of the Institute of Landscape Architects March 1955.jpg: en-wiki is probably easiest, at least for the next 5 years, till copyright clearly expires. However, as I say, ig the logo predates 1950, we could have it here, as described. In either case, it is not own work, it is a faithful reproduction of a 1955 work. Remember that non-free use on en-wiki would only be valid if the picture is used in an article, and unlike Commons (where we want the highest-resolution version possible) they actually want something low-resolution to minimize the copyright issue. On the Commons side: do you know the date of that logo? - Jmabel ! talk 16:45, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jmabel ! talk Thank you again. Re the logo: I don't know the exact date but it was designed before 1950 (my guess is 1946). It is appropriate for it to be non-free use. Does this mean that {{PD-old-70}} is OK for both images. I think it would be best to delete the two uploads to Commons and re-upload to the English Wikipedia. Tom — Preceding unsigned comment added by TomTurner2 (talk • contribs) 19:35, 5 November 2020‎ (UTC)[reply]

@TomTurner2: When are you going to start signing your postings?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:09, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TomTurner2: I'm rather confused: you had us spend a bunch of time working with you on how these can be licensed for Commons, we worked it out, and now you want to delete? - Jmabel ! talk 00:06, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jmabel ! talk I am most grateful for you help! And if it does not infringe copyright law will be happy to leave them in Wikimedia Commons. So if you could tell me how to add the {{PD-old-70}} tag to both images this is what I will do. Tom — Preceding unsigned comment added by TomTurner2 (talk • contribs)

@TomTurner2: I'll do it, but please look at what I do so you know how in the future, and please use categories on your uploads -- I won't do that part for you -- and as Jeff G. says, sign your posts with ~~~~, it should only take a second, and saves someone else far more time later. - Jmabel ! talk 17:03, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sonething is wrong with this image.

File:John Brown's Grave, North Elba (NYPL b11708219-G91F094 136ZB).tiff

It is supposed to show a rural grave. Look at the site it says it's taken from. This picture is of a building on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. I don't know how to fix this or I'd do it. Deisenbe (talk) 00:06, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@: We have many pictures of John Brown's grave and tombstone in Category:John Brown Farm State Historic Site, but no others that look like this "picture of a building on 5th Avenue in Manhattan". Please investigate.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:50, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ and Jeff G.: Intriguingly, I found this watermarked monstrosity on G search that looks like a rural grave.Philipp Michel Reichold (talk) 04:34, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The source shows JB's grave, in stereo. Have tried downloading and uploading the 4MB tiff but it fails API verification. Perhaps this is why the wrong image was used in the first place.
The same photo but not the same scan is at https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/510d47dc-e1fc-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99. So it's now possible to use the NYPL catalog entry to update the actual photo we have, and separately someone could work on trying to salvage the TIFF of John Brown's Grave that appears unuploadable for me, but would match the current page text. -- (talk) 10:46, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Philipp Michel Reichold: I uploaded it for you as File:Halloween skeleton with PPE and disinfectant wipes in Largo, Florida October 30, 2020.jpg with the Upload Wizard. I saw the same portrait previews you did, but it turned out ok. It seems you photographed it with "Exposure Program" "Landscape mode (for landscape photos with the background in focus)" and then "Rotated 90° CW", which confused the previews.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:48, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.37.65.124 (talk • contribs) 11:46, 6 November 2020‎ (UTC)[reply]

Parnassus

can I use a wikimedia's copy of Mantegnia's Parnassus for a book on Italian Pagan Mythology — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2.25.43.44 (talk) 12:58, 6 November 2020‎ (UTC)[reply]

Hi, and welcome. Which page is that? See also Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia generally.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:35, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This probably refers to File:La Parnasse, by Andrea Mantegna, from C2RMF retouched.jpg, which heads the enWP article on the topic. Since the painting is centuries old, it’s in the public domain, and faithful reproductions thereof are free to use in most of the world—although any image that includes the frame & surroundings may have its own copyright, owned by the photographer. Questioner, note that there are quite a few more choices here in Parnassus by Andrea Mantegna: help yourself! Most of the file pages should show details of their provenance, in case you want to attribute them, but there’s no legal requirement to do so.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:02, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How can I get a misidentified picture corrected?

While looking for pictures for the English wikipedia's black-cowled oriole article, I came across this picture. It has been misidentified. It is a Cuban oriole. These two species were split nearly a decade ago. What is now known as the black-cowled oriole is only found in Central America. This picture was taken in Cuba. Can someone please correct the picture's description and move it to the correct categories? MeegsC (talk) 17:26, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MeegsC: Hi, and welcome. You can do all of that, and add {{Rename}}, by editing the file description page.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:05, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MeegsC: I see you’ve already posted on the Talk page, which is a good start. You might want to wait a day or two to see if anyone replies there, but if you’re dead certain about the identification feel free to proceed as Jeff G. suggests. Note that for many categories there’s an Unidentified cat somewhere not far above in the tree—in this instance Unidentified Icterus—which can be used in doubtful cases or to get a ‘second opinion’ from users who work the topic area.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:27, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Odysseus: Thanks! I'm a professional bird guide IRL, so I'm confident about the ID. It's just making the change (i.e. renaming the file) that I'm unclear about. MeegsC (talk) 19:05, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MeegsC: there are three implied changes: editing the description field, changing the category to Icterus melanopsis, and moving the file. The first two you can do yourself by editing the wikitext. To request that a filemover change the title, you add the special template that Jeff linked above (anywhere on the file page, usually at the top) according to the instructions on that page, which will put the file in a maintenance category for attention. You can do this in the same edit as the other changes if you like. It‘s best to propose a minimal change; identification numbers and such should usually be kept. As a pretty ‘conservative’ filemover I’d be inclined just to remove “Black-cowled”—nobody has questioned that it’s an oriole, and the description & category are quite adequate to identify the species, while being easier to change in the event of a dispute—but your “confident” request might look something like {{Rename|Cuban Oriole - Cuba S4E0688 (23262517213).jpg|3|No black-cowled orioles in Cuba, see Talk page|MeegsC}}. The first three parameters are required; the “3” in the second field indicates that you want to correct a substantial error.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:56, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Odysseus1479! You're a star. MeegsC (talk) 21:57, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale

The rationale for File:2012_VP113_discovery_image.jpg states that the image will only be used in the "2012 VP113" article. It will be used as a means to illustrate the article in the info box. The latter is not true: The image is not used in the infobox of 2012 VP113, but in the article's body. My question is, does this require a change to the rationale, or is it a minor issue that can be ignored? Renerpho (talk) 18:19, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Renerpho: that file is on enWP, not here; Commons doesn’t allow fair-use content. I doubt anyone there would object to your changing it yourself: despite the formality of the template’s wording it’s not a legal declaration (like a licence) that shouldn’t be tampered with.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:35, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@EEJJLL: Hi, and welcome. That looks like a bug, as we have no logs of your attempted uploads. Bug reports generally require specifics, like what upload URL you tried to use and what options you tried, please see mw:How to report a bug for details.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:07, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm actually at a Panera's if that helps.

All I did was Open my File for upload when I was directed to. But it simply wouldn't allow me to proceed after that.

This is the first time in years that I've tried to upload a photo. But yeah it seems strange that it doesn't give me any options to proceed down the commons wizard

Information being deleted

Could you tell me why the information that I am adding is being deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr Julie Dee Bell (talk • contribs) 21:30, 7 November 2020‎ (UTC)[reply]

@Dr Julie Dee Bell: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png photos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, it will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg version which will look sharper, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Also, Special:AbuseFilter/122 worked as intended. We do not host encyclopædia articles, CVs, or current ads here on Wikimedia Commons per COM:NOT.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:49, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit conflict) @Dr Julie Dee Bell: I can’t speak for Achim55 but two reasons immediately come to mind: first, that content categories are not to be used for pages in user space, and second, that none of the categories you added actually exist (hence their appearance in red). An example of an appropriate category for your user page might be Users interested in geology. See COM:CAT and COM:USER for more information. (Please sign your discussion-page & noticeboard messages by typing four tildes at the end.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:53, 7 November 2020 (UTC). P.S. Jeff G. and I are addressing quite separate issues: I was referring solely to the history of your user page.—21:56, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Julie Dee Bell: I agree with Achim55 and Odysseus1479 that you shouldn't be adding categories that don't exist on this project to pages on this project.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:41, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, I deleted the cats for having contained text only. In the meantime the situation has become different, because Julie did upload images. --Achim (talk) 12:45, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Achim: Sorry, I hadn't looked into that. It seems the upload of images and creation of pages here were designed to support her various promotional autobiographies on enwiki.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:00, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Modifying images

Hi, I am a bit confused about my obligations if I edit an image. It seems if I trim off one edge then I have to upload the modified image in my account assigned to the same license as the original.

I suspect that some times to modified image would be useful to others but often it would not.

Could you please clarify what the license means? 1/ Does it mean that if you make an edit to the image then you must upload the new file? OR does it mean: 2/ If I do decide to upload the modified file then I must use the same license as the original? The wording could be ambiguous.

Cheers,

John Aylmer aylmer2908@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaylmer1 (talk • contribs) 09:40, 8 November 2020‎ (UTC)[reply]

@Jaylmer1: Hi, and welcome. You don't have to post modifications, but if you do post them, they must comply with the license of the original. If the original has a license which includes "-sa", "-SA", or "Share Alike", the license you use must include that also. With Creative Commons licenses, you may also upgrade the version number. Is there a particular license or file that concerns you?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:34, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Hello, I have posted a screenshot of myself a comment on Facebook and marked copyright. See file:Wiki User Profile Photo (1).png. So does the content violate copyright. Thanks Đặng Vũ Lân (talk) 10:08, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Đặng Vũ Lân: Hi, and welcome. Violetbonmua and I think it does violate the copyright of the author.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:24, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: It's just a screenshot of a funny comment about a famous Vietnamese poem. It is very popular on Vietnamese social media and hardly anyone knows the original author of that funny poem Đặng Vũ Lân (talk) 14:30, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And really no one will care about the owner of a fun verse. It was actually created for entertainment purposes and was used solely by me on my user page with the aim of creating fun on my membership page at vi.wiki Đặng Vũ Lân (talk) 14:39, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That is not how copyright works. Creative verses are automatically copyrighted and non-free, and we here at Common do care about the author's rights. So unless the original author grants a permission, we cannot publish his text over here. De728631 (talk) 22:38, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to upload a different version of a file

Hi, I've been trying to upload a cleaner version of File:Château de Tourbillon.jpg but for some reason the changes I make on GIMP won't show on Commons. When I look at the file on my computer the black dots are gone but everytime I upload the corrected version here the dots are still there. Any idea of what the problem could be? Also where do I ask to remove the two new files I uploaded? If the dots are still there might as well keep the original. - Espandero (talk) 11:57, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading old newpapers

Can I upload a 1925 newspaper page that I found on the microfilm at the university library. I believe since the library, and the collection is open to the public, that places the image of the newspaper in the public domain? 4Henriettaatthecoldcaseorg (talk) 22:28, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@4Henriettaatthecoldcaseorg: Being open to public access does not automatically place the content into the public domain, so we need some more information on this newspaper. Presuming that it is a US newspaper, is there a copyright notice anywhere on that issue of the paper you mentioned? If not, the text and images are free to use, and you may upload a copy with a licence template {{PD-US-no notice}}. De728631 (talk) 22:35, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I do not see any copyright notice, although the microfilm image is not the best quality! Where do I get a license template? Sorry for asking such questions, but this is my first foray into editing! Also, how do I load the image onto this discussion? All I have is the image of the newspaper on my photo roll. 4Henriettaatthecoldcaseorg (talk) 22:43, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You cannot link the image to this discussion unless it is somewhere on the internet, or you upload a copy here at Common. To do the latter, you first of all need to obtain a digital copy from the image at your photo roll. Then you can use the Upload Wizard to upload the image at Commons:
  • "Select media files to share" and choose the file you would like to upload
  • In the "Release rights" section, fill in the Source (e.g. New York Herald, March 3, 1925, page 10) and Author fields. If there are any authors credited for the text portion or the images, please state their names, otherwise you may just write the name of the paper. Further down that page in "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work:", you need to select "Another reason not mentioned above" and fill in a line of code: {{PD-art|PD-US-no notice}}
In the next section, please enter a description for the image and then proceed with the upload process.

Can you correct mislabeling on an image?

RE: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Burned_Books_Monument_-_Berlin,_Germany.jpg This image refers to Berlin's burned books monument in the filename, but the image is of a monument to German printing. The actual burned books monument is nearby in Berlin: a very different monument. A web search for "burned books monument Berlin" brings up this image, along with images of the actual monument. The license holder of the image gave it an erroneous name, but apparently only the license holder (on Flickr) can make the correction. I have a screenshot of the search results, but can't upload it here because I don't own the images shown. If you repeat the search, you'll see what I mean.

      • People count on Wikipedia for accuracy, and that includes images retrieved via Wikimedia Commons.
      • If you cannot persuade the license holder to correct the label, can you delete the image for inaccuracy? So far, it seems there are no pages that use this file, so deletion should be simple.
      • I did search FAQ and other Help resources, but found nothing pertinent to this problem. This "new section" is the closest I could find to posting a question for resolution. I apologize, if this is not an intended use. My own talk page didn't seem to point toward resolution.

_________________ A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Inventaire general des meubles de la Couronne tome 1.pdf, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Why isn't my wikimedia commons image showing up in a wikipedia article?

I am trying to add this image,

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Diagram_of_Schiller_Station_Mercury_Vapor_System.jpg

Diagram of Schiller Station Mercury Vapor System

on the following wikipedia article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_vapour_turbine

When I post it, I just get a link that navigates me to the "Special:upload?wpDestFile" upload function.

What am I doing wrong?

This is weird. I am experiencing the same problem with this particular file and I can't even insert it using source code editing. What is more important though is that your scan may be a copyright violation. The original book may still be copyrighted which is why I have nominated the file for deletion. That aside, we should try to find out why the file is not transcluded to Wikipedia. De728631 (talk) 23:15, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It may be a coincidence but a new user reported a similar problem today on the French-language help desk Commons:Service d'aide#Photos. I assumed it may have to do with mistakes present on their Wikipedia draft page, although on a quick look I could not identify the problem. But maybe it is a more general bug. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:46, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You could try the 'Upload a new version of this file option' at the bottom of the File history section, to upload the image again.... Just to see if this clears the bug? (copyright deletion aside). -- Crep1711 (talk) 23:56, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That might help an image that doesn’t display (e.g. showing a blank box), but in this case it looks like the page isn’t being found at all, so I doubt that altering the content would have any effect. My guess is either a database glitch or an invisible problem with the filename.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:05, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that's fine, I thought it may be worth a shot as it was a cross-wiki upload from Wikipedia, so wondered whether the Commons upload wizard may clear a glitch that possibly occurred; but you are no doubt right... -- Crep1711 (talk) 00:16, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you are located in Europe, this might be a similar issue to en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_185#WebP thumbnail rendering issue in Firefox. There is an dedicated cache server in Europe, named ESAMS.--Snaevar (talk) 01:18, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't work on other language Wikipedias either (well, I tried one.) I could add it to a Wikidata statement at wikidata:Q4115189, but it doesn't display a thumbnail. I guess something wasn't set up right in the database when the file was uploaded. --ghouston (talk) 03:01, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is work being done to resolve the bug? When will we be able to use the affected images on Wikipedia?--Xabier (talk) 20:45, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the issue I am having is that the file has been flagged for deletion due to no copyright verification. Am working through that process now, so maybe it will work if I am able to get it unflagged for deletion.Dr00bie (talk) 21:12, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
en:File:Diagram of Schiller Station Mercury Vapor System.jpg is working now. It's not related to the nomination for deletion, that just adds some text to the file page. --ghouston (talk) 22:21, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
en:File:Bilbao - Intermodal 20.jpg still doesn't work. Can someone fix it? Do you just have to wait?--Xabier (talk) 08:33, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It works now.--Xabier (talk) 14:30, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is all very confusing, and I am extremely ignorant of the topic of licenses, but I am adding this image in hopes to bolster a project I am working on with a team of fellow students. This image, the Colonization Cycle, was one I clipped from a research paper from 1954 (Link to source: https://gupea.ub.gu.se/handle/2077/48733). After searching through the host website, there is mention of Open Access (https://www.ub.gu.se/sv/publicera/open-access), however, being a website based in Sweden, I do not know. This source (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Public_domain) says I can use the {{PD-1996}} template for sources outside of the United States older than 1996, but again, I don't know. Add onto that, I don't know how to add licensing onto my existing upload, nor how to remove the current deletion notices. Caleb Bak (talk) 05:45, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The header in the original PDF document states that text within the information is "free to use", however, it doesn't explicitly state whether or not I can use images. Caleb Bak (talk) 07:30, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Medical scheme reproduction ?

@SHLNL: Hi, and welcome. What can you tell us about the name and lifetime of the scheme's artist and the dates and countries of artistry and publication?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:36, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for your feedback and welcome. Authors are alive and from Switzerland, Belgium and US and the book was published in France, possibly in Belgium and switzerland.--SHLNL (talk) 13:53, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Then it is certainly copyrighted, if copyrightable. You'd need an explicit license from the author or authors of the "scheme" (I assume you mean an image of some sort, since we are on Commons), probably via the process outlined at COM:OTRS.
Just to be clear: if this is something so simple as to be ineligible for copyright (e.g. a bar chart of objective data), it could be uploaded as {{PD-ineligible}}. - Jmabel ! talk 16:23, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to upload pictures belonging to a government?

Not all governments have an exception for the copyright of their works. While governmental works of the United States federal government are free of any copyright, the same is not true for Turkey. Turkish government works are copyrighted and non-free unless a free licence has explicitely been granted at their respective website. So we cannot use the image you uploaded. @Samya90: Remember the overall ethos of Commons is to make files available to be freely used by anyone for any purpose. Anything which detracts from allowing a picture to be reused in this way is not helpful. Invisible watermarks are allowed but really obvious ones are not. I was almost about to publish some of the photos of the Türkmenbaşy Ruhy Mosque when I decided that it would have been better for me to check the copyright rules of the country first. According to this page, freedom of panorama is not ok, except in the following example: "Reproduction, broadcasting or communication to the public by cable of works of architecture, photography or fine art permanently located in a place open to public access, except when the image of the work is the main subject or it is used for commercial purposes" (i.e. incidental and non-commercial use, if I'm not mistaken). Does this mean that I won't be able to upload my pictures onto Wikimedia Commons? What about all of these? Why can they be on the site? Does it have to do with Flickr? --SuperBowser (talk) 21:22, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

These pictures, including the ones from flickr, are not covered by any exception to the copyright rules as far as I can tell. They only exist here because no-one noticed yet. See Category:Buildings in Turkmenistan for a big red warning about uploading pictures buildings in Turkmenistan. --rimshottalk 21:32, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, so it's my fault if many Wikipedias will now suddenly lose many of their Turkmenistan-related images! Are they going to be deleted? Does this mean that many Wikipedia pages about buildings in Turkmenistan won't be able to have images for the time being? --SuperBowser (talk) 21:36, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We don't control the policies of the individual Wikipedias as to what they might allow locally as fair use, but it does mean that images of modern (copyrighted) buildings in Turkmenistan should not be on Commons without an explicit license from the architect or their heirs. - Jmabel ! talk 23:31, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Full page scans to individual images

I am extremely new to wikimedia commons and have been part of the wikisource community for about a year so I apologize for my lack of knowledge currently. Through wikisource I was able to locate a pdf file that was scanned and uploaded to wikimedia commons as a pdf. I am attempting to convert the full page scans into just the pictures that show up on these scans so as to add them to the wikisource page. I'm not sure what the proper way to upload the new picture so as to tie it together with the original scan or if I even need to do that. if you could get back to me that would be great. Thank you! Uploading content

Hello we are trying to create a BIO through wikipedia to show the profile of a violinist on Wikipedia whenever someone searches for her name. I can't find any guidance for this. pLease can you advise regarding the process?

This is Commons, not Wikipedia, but w:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest is the guidance. It can be summarized in one word: "don't".--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:22, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Should we allow everyone to upload photographs posted on facebook to Wikimedia Commons, and no need to send permission via COM:OTRS?

吹笛牧童 told me that it doesn't make much sense for him to request the uploader provide license confirmation from the copyright holder per COM:OTRS. The reason is because of OTRS does not guarantee that photographs are take by the uploader. If the photo itself has been grabbed from somewhere, which he then posted on his Facebook page, no one knows that he is not the author/copyright holder. However, many people are seem unhappy with my work with COM:DR. Reke and Liaon98 both thinks I had Asperger syndrome so that caused this problem. Andrew43 thinks that I shouldn't do nothing after using the template {{Delete}}. Most of what I do is the same as what all of us do, so I don't know what I did wrong to make them unhappy. Should we allow everyone to upload photographs posted on facebook to Wikimedia Commons, and no need to send permission via COM:OTRS?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:03, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Kai3952: Does the Facebook page where it is posted grant a license? Do we have good reason to believe that the owner of the Facebook page is the photographer? If the answer to both of those is "yes," then fine, no need to use OTRS. Otherwise, OTRS or delete. - Jmabel ! talk 15:16, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to categorize an image that belongs in two different cats

Hello,

File:US Post Office-Winnemucca - Now used as Winnemucca City Hall.jpg is a NRHP

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 90000137.

but it is also the current city hall in Winnemucca, according to National Register of Historic Places listings in Humboldt County, Nevada on Wikipedia. Is it ok to put it in both categories (which I have done)? Or is there a better way to handle this? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 14:10, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Writing a book about sustainable India (digital and hard copy) - Permission to use some pictures

Hi, I am a bit confused. I would like to use some pictures for a book I am working on about sustainable India, pictures that are from wikipedia commons. Here is the link of one of the pictures: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:India_-_Varanasi_green_peas_-_2714.jpg The book is going to be a hard copy and a digital copy. If it's possible, what credits should I put? © Jorge Royan / http://www.royan.com.ar I look forward for your reply. Best regards, Mickael
