First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Your Flickr reviewer request

Hello. As a result of your request at Commons talk:Flickr images/reviewers, I have added you to the reviewers list. Please see the instructions at Commons:Flickr images/reviewers and add {{User trusted}} to your userpage. Best, Huib talk 16:18, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for putting your trust in me through breaking the deadlock in my favour, I will make sure I follow the instructions. Unfortunately work has hit me since I made the request a month and a half ago, hence I may be a bit inactive for a while, but I am sure I will do some reviewing over Easter. I am aware of the FoP situation in the UAE, and I am preparing a response to these deletion requests on an image-by-image basis, as I considered the possibility of an FoP deletion request before uploading. I deliberately didn't upload a large number of Dubai images I have due to lack of FoP in the UAE. It is interesting that these three images have been selected out of all those I have uploaded on Dubai. If it is because they were in Category:Burj Al Arab, you missed one at File:Burj Al Arab from Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort and Spa in Dubai 3.jpg. I will say now that if you are planning to nominate more of my uploads, can I ask that you please put them all in one or a few nominations, as you have already been asked by another user on your talk page. Flooding people's talk pages with deletion requests (as has already happened at User talk:LoverOfDubai), as well as overwhelming the deletion requests process, has been considered disruptive in the past. Thanks for the compliments. :) I had a few spare minutes in the evening and I saw that it needed doing, and it did look rather odd with users adding templates there weren't loading because there was so many on the page. CT Cooper · talk 10:53, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
The IP apparently doesn't seem willing to just change to a speedy tag, or mass DR. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:06, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
I've not too happy with the way these images are being nominated, as I have tried to calmly say to the user several times. The user was asked by another user at User talk:84.61.172.89 (his/her third to most recent IP address) and then by me on my talk page (see above) to make mass nominations rather than nominating hundreds of files individually, however all these requests have gone nowhere, probably because using a script would not be as easy with a mass DR. It has also been difficult to respond to what are effectively "hit-and-run" copy and paste nominations, with it often left unclear why particular images are being singled out, and the user notably never comes back to clarify their reasoning for an image having FoP issues. I also asked more recently at User talk:84.61.131.141 (the user's second to most recent IP address) to avoid nominating images of the same type that had previously been kept, in that case images showing little more than concrete. CT Cooper · talk 12:44, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Is there any option to protect those pages...only login users can edit..--KALARICKAN | My Interactions 08:26, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that is technically possible, though the user's edits are a net positive to the project and most of the nominations are correct, so I don't think any administrator intervention at this point is justified. CT Cooper · talk 11:20, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

I did get the gist of what you were saying though, but I'm not yet ready for advanced discussions in German, particularly on copyright. Thanks for having a go anyway! Opinion Pls

I would like to have your opinion on Commons:Deletion_requests/File:DSC00109-Jeddah-Hilton.JPG as i cannot understand JCB's 'simple window' term.....Captain......Tälk tö me.. 14:16, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

I think he is referring to the threshold of originality, by arguing that the design of the building is too simple for copyright. I think Jcb's threshold of which something is original enough for copyright are higher than that of many of the community, and if that building is too simple for copyright then so are many of those which have already had pictures of them deleted. Many Dubai buildings for instance contain relatively simple square windows, like this hotel. One big problem that seems to be coming through over FoP related issues is that there is not a great deal of consistency, even among admins, on issues such as de minimis and the threshold of originality. CT Cooper · talk 16:42, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

reviewer status

Hi Cooper, Please check this out.-- Raghith (talk) 17:07, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Raghith. I see that you have withdrawn your request. To clarify, the point I was making by pointing out your mistake was that it showed that you need more experience with uploading images to Commons and dealing with them before you are ready to be a license reviewer. You know what the licenses are, but that unfortunately is not enough, as the role also often involves dealing with wider copyright issues, of which a good knowledge of how Commons deals with copyright are needed. As was pointed out in the discussion, reviewing your own images is discouraged anyway, so unless you are planning to review the uploads of others, then you should not need reviewer status. For your own uploads, I would recommend leaving to the bot or another reviewer. Please don't be saddened by my oppose; I hope you continue to contribute to Commons. Feedback on Accra Academy files marked for speedy deletion

First and foremost, I appreciate all the assistance that you have offered me in an effort to help me save my uploaded media at commons from being speedily deleted while at the same time, maintaining and/or promoting the quality of information on Wikipedia as a whole, I truly am appreciative.

As per your advice directing me on how to provide a licence/permission for media that I have uploaded to commons, I have decided to go along with option A, as such, I have written to the webmaster of the accraacalumni website requesting him, in a urgent message, to write to permissions-commonswikimedia.org and provide the requisite information in order to maintain my uploaded files on commons. I am hopeful it will work out. Thank you for helping me out.

With regards to my user name on commons, I created osy as my first username, sadly, I was new to wikipedia back then and unfortunately, somehow I forgot the password to my account. I created the username ontoyinsimon some time after that. I have made efforts in the past to have my user account--osy---"reset", this did not work out, instead my ontoyinsimon useraccount was remained to osy(not the real osy) and then linked to the contributions made on my ontoyinsimon user account, without including those made using my first user account--osy. I would be grateful to you if you can help me retrieve the password to my osy account and then move my contributions from ontoyinsimon to Osy; initials to my name---Ontoyin Simon Yin, because I prefer to use it once again.Ontoyinsimon (talk) 12:06, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Okay, hopefully the images will be approved and can stay. There is not much I can do about recovering the Osy account, as it is not in the power of English Wikipedia administrators to recover passwords. Do you have an e-mail address assigned to the Osy account? If the password really cannot be recovered, the English Wikipedia bureaucrats can re-name accounts. They could possibly move the existing Osy account to a random name, and move your existing Ontoyinsimon account to the name Osy. You might want to go to the w:Wikipedia:Bureaucrats noticeboard for advice. CT Cooper · talk 14:20, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

This also..File:Burj_Dubai.JPG--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 03:37, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
Okay, here are my opinions on all three images.
For File:Essaouira.jpg, I would guess by looking at the building that it is probably public domain from its age, and so I would be nice and go for  weak keep on this image. However, it can be argued that without proof that the building is public domain, "significant doubt" exists on if it is free, so it could be deleted per the precautionary principle. The closure reason given at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Essaouira.jpg doesn't make much sense to me, given that the building is not that generic compared to those that have been deleted in the past, and I'm not sure why a curved building should be treated any differently from a straight one. The overall complexity of the building with the shutter, window, and top balcany design probably would be enough to push it into being copyrighted. It is also news to me that "long standing practice" on this, since I have had to argue with established users on deleting pictures of concrete shells of buildings under construction, and there appear to be plenty of other admins which take a stricter view on de minimis and the threshold of originality than is being by the admins featured in these cases.
For File:Agadir 23.01.2011 16-39-35.JPG, this is unlikely to be public domain but the case for this building not meeting the threshold of originality is stronger than the one above. Given that the part of the building being focused on shows little more than a white wall with concrete, again I would probably go for  weak keep here.
For File:Burj Dubai.JPG, I have to say the way these deletion requests have been handled leaves a lot to be desired. I agree with the more recent nominator that the consensus to undelete was very weak, with at least one of the three users supporting undeletion making irrelevant arguments. We have a saying on the English Wikipedia called "consensus can change", and challenging the consensus as the third nomination did, is not inappropriate. In my view, none of the arguments in the third nomination in favour of keeping the image stand up to scrutiny. I would go for  Delete, as it is pretty clear that the Burj Khalifa is the subject of the photo - it is smack in the middle of it and is being clearly focused on, with the camera clearly being tilted towards it. The buildings around the Burj Khalifa appear to be incidental and hence de minimis, but the Burj Khalifa itself is not. This is different from File:Downtown Burj Dubai and Business Bay, seen from Safa Park.jpg where it is clearly a skyline photo with no focus on any individual building, so all the buildings are de minimis. Jcb's closing argument makes no sense to me at all. De minimis is for cases where copyrighted material is incidentally included. If the photographer deliberately pointed and adjusted the camera up to capture the entire building, then it is clearly not incidental, as the photograph was taken with the clear intention of capturing that copyrighted work. A users opinion on "ugliness" is not relevant to copyright law. CT Cooper · talk 16:35, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the analyse, as i got a doubt on the first 2 images, so that i decided to ask you..as jcb is closing every FOP issues as de minimis..and filing user problem with these kind of DR's.. I think jcb is closing every hole in commons to me so that i cannot complaint against his attitude towards DR closings in future..Can this community can stop jcb from closing FOP related DR's as he is not experienced in dealing with such DR's??--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 03:52, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
There isn't a lot that can be done about it, given that Jcb doesn't seem to have changed his approach that much since he was last discussed on the administrators noticeboard, and still has an overly liberal approach towards the threshold of originality and de minimis. Probably the best is to re-nominate images for deletion after a suitable time has past, and find someone else that agrees with you to re-nominate them again. CT Cooper · talk 13:35, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
Sadly, nobody else don't want to fire-up the DR again, as all the opposing users will again have a joint fight, similar is happened on many occations and even admin warned me that i am alone in the DR's....there are users available to have a joint work for rescuing a copyrighted picture from being deleted, I got 2 admins who is protecting copyrighted images without much reasons...--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 15:22, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
I think it is best to leave the questionable DR results for the time being, perhaps to a time in which dealing with FOP issues is a little more settled than it is now - in particular the questions of de minimis and the threshold of originality. At present it is all over the place with opinions varying widly, even among admins. I will be shortly drafting my presentation on FOP for the August 2011 Wikimania in Haifa, Israel, of which I hope to raise awareness on these issues. Both the presentation itself and hopefully a recording will be placed on Commons. CT Cooper · talk 16:31, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
Wish you all the best for the process, i am delaying the major database dump for FOP pictures till the wikimania presentation and its results....and its a planned attack or can call harrassment to the user who nominates the pictures for deletion, Such planned attack is coming from Ml.wikipedia, where all the user's joint together and target the image to rescue from being deleted...but several occations they were failed and those frustration of the user's from ml.wiki is coming againist me as they are not accepting the spirit of commons rather than providing a space for copyrighted or no-source pictures...as a result of such DR's another user raised an email to the wikimedia foundation..but that too was unsuccessfull and now they are discussing some other ways to tackle the issues raised...I practice as a nominator for imaes to DR but if there is a fire againinst uploader i need to respond and that involves 2 famous admins and ending up in noticeboard...--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 04:41, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

I agree that ml.wiki users should not be importing grievances from that site onto Commons. They should appreciate that this is an independent project, and the policies and practices of one site e.g. their position on archiving user talk pages, may not be the same here. If users are teaming up to have images kept outside Commons policy, then not all admins are likely to co-operate, and if it goes on that issue itself is likely to end-up on the administrators noticeboard. The Foundation does not generally intervene with disputes on projects, so the response there is not surprising. Thank you for your support on my presentation, I hope it does go well. CT Cooper · talk 10:05, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

So that i left the project (ml.wiki) upon receiving a block of 3 days for cleaning my own user talk page (Where a policy was not existing in ml.wiki) and changed the name so that they will not plan a group attack on me, still now ignited users of ml.wiki is around my nominations, and i am trying my best to be fit within the project which is having a strong framework in terms of policies and have more user's with different opinions...I feel so bad about a couple of user's from ml.wiki and 2 admins..since its not a spontanious talk page attack i cannot bring it upto the noticeboard, eventually my name is again dragged into this. After your awareness progress is there any changes will come into commons..especially on admins??.Hope so..--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 11:21, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Well the arguments being made in the nomination you cite against deletion appear to be a non-starter per the precautionary principle. I think most admins will see through such arguments, and the right result will come through in the end. It will be difficult for me or anyone else to take action here. If you feel your being attacked, it is probably best either to ignore it or to win on the policy arguments. CT Cooper · talk 14:09, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
I have added a no source tag on the same user's image, hope there will be no action on me, as this user was complaining about my behaviour of marking the images available in commons without any source tag. As informed on Admin's noticeboard..--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 08:25, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Well this one isn't a borderline case in any way. Under the CC-BY-SA and CC-BY licences those that re-use the images must give proper attribution to the authors of those images, and "Created from various images available in Commons" isn't good enough. If those had been my images, unless I had released them into the public domain, I would have not been very impressed. Linking to the images, as is done with File:Mlwiki loves wikimedia 2011 april.jpg, should be sufficient. CT Cooper · talk 12:41, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

What will be the future of this image--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 11:22, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
It is probably okay, though I would say it is still on the lower end of what is acceptable with de minimis. Not sure why the DR was not allowed to run the full seven days in any case - I do wonder if any lessons have been learnt here. CT Cooper · talk 12:04, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Let me suggest to you both that we need to take our wins where we find them. I don't understand this cropped image being kept -- if we had 90% of a Picasso painting, we'd delete it, but we have a serious number of users who do not believe that architects should get the same protection that we give to sculptors and painters. Captain, I understand your frustration with the issue, but let me suggest that rather than fighting long, losing battles over single images, you spend more time on the tens of thousands of other images that are just as much problems and less controversial. You win an occasional battle (as you did with the one that started this thread) and that's great, but spent a lot of time doing it and had to fight another battle on the ANB....      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:31, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

I was doing the same before 7 months, but those arguing user's only tempted me to deleted those images which is much arguable for the ml.wiki user's, Currently i am wasting my time behind these kind of user's and commons don't have any control over such user's or no policy available for such grouping job's. I decide to nominate all kind of images with a wider eye...hope that will not bring the ignited user's on board..--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 16:19, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
I agree with James. As someone that doesn't enjoy fighting or drama, one of my top pieces of advice to a contributor to any Wikimedia project, is that disagreement are almost inevitable, but choose your battles carefully. You are right, Commons does not have much control over ml.wiki users - particularly anything that happens off Commons. At the end of the day though, you have left ml.wiki, and there will come a time when most Commons users won't want to hear the same rhetoric again and again. My advice would be to leave them to it, and just let your contributions rise above this. CT Cooper · talk 16:56, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Comment on FOP

On FOP, most users don't look at the license. They look at COM:FOP like this nasty DR as is typical. This is a DR on a 200 year old architectural work. That's why Admin Lupo agrees that an insertion on FOP limitations in COM:FOP for certain tourist friendly countries is better (ie. Italy, Russia, France) since this is where people look before they file a DR and waste everyone's time. I've sorted out the issue with MacMed now but before he was nominating many old architectural and copyright free images in France. The problem is there will be many other FOP warriors who just look at COM:FOP and think the Bastille is a copyright violation next.

PS: I'll try to reword the FOP text...a third time. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:19, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

I have seen such cases myself as well. I think I need to make clear though that I was not objecting to the content in principle, only the problematic wording, which betrayed FOP as a negative when it isn't. I have to say though that anyone that thinks that old buildings need to be deleted due to the lack of FOP in a country is clearly completely missing the point of the FOP issue, and should be asked to review the entire page again, not just one new paragraph. I think part of problem again here is that FOP is interpreted by users as a negative, and hence users miss the point that FOP is irrelevant when copyright has expired, because it is an exemption to copyright law (a positive), not a restriction (a negative). I will review the new wording when I see it, and I am willing to make changes myself if appropriate. CT Cooper · talk 21:51, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
I see that you have now implemented further changes. This re-wording resolves my concerns. CT Cooper · talk 21:53, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

French FOP

Feel free to make any reply you wish in this DR if you want to. And please ignore the fact that I am the nominator...as this is a free country. I just want your honest opinion. Thank You in advance for any reply which you may wish to give in the DR. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 09:07, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

This certainly wasn't one suitable for speedy deletion (and speedy deletion is supposed to have ended for FOP issues anyway). I'm on the fence, since the pyramid occupies a decent part of the picture, but the main subject is clearly the older building. Overall, I would say delete as the inclusion of pyramid was avoidable here, as is required for de minimis under French law. CT Cooper · talk 18:50, 22 July 2011 (UTC)
  •  Comment: Its nice to get your views but I thought you might post it in the DR comments so that everyone could see it. But that's your call. Best wishes, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:59, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Use of some of your pictures on our website

Jambo sana, dear CT Cooper,

I'm currently in the process of finishing work on a new website for a Kenyan safari business. Of course, we have tons and tons of pictures. But not all of them are, in my view, suitable for use in some context.

In this particular case, I'm lacking proper images for Tsavo West. This is how I found your pictures.

If I understand this correctly, we may use pictures of yours if giving attribution to you, by naming you as the photographer. I'd gladly do so. If you have a website, please let me know so I shall link from either our website or from our Facebook page. (I'd wait a bit with the latter, we're just starting our page so right now, not too many people would actually see said link).

Let me know if that's okay, or if you have any other questions.

Asante sana! And have a most lovely evening.

Derek Molu Safaris

www.molusafaris.com (currently, under construction; only German version "switched on")

Hello Derek,
You are very welcome to use my photographs on your website if you wish. I don't have my own website at this time, but if you do wish to provide a link in the attribution I would recommend linking to the photo you are using on Commons or to my user page (which is the closest thing I have to my own website). It so happens that I am going back to Kenya in December this year, though the actual safari I will go on has not yet been decided. In any case I will collect even more photographs for Commons. FOP

The sculpture situation in the U.S. is a little less sure, but there is basically no guidance on this kind of thing in the form of a court case that I know of. The U.S. uses foreign law to determine copyright ownership, but then uses U.S. law to determine if it was an infringement and what penalties there are if so -- that was at least decided in one court case involving cross-border situations. Since the U.S. does use foreign law to determine copyright ownership, it's possible that since foreign law (FOP) makes the photograph completely the property of the photographer, then they can claim full ownership in the U.S. as well. The sculpture artist in these cases would have allowed their work to be displayed in that way, and they should have been aware of the laws of that country before they did so, so in theory they allowed it knowing such photographs could be taken. That fact may well be taken into account in a court case as well -- the sculptor had no reasonable expectation of controlling such photos. The architecture situation would hit the second part (it is not infringement in the U.S., so it stops there). Without a court case to be sure, this scenario is at least fairly feasible. It seems Commons has always allowed these FOP works from other countries, and there doesn't seem to be a good enough reason to change the status quo (it would be a purely theoretical legal argument, about a situation which has seemingly never been a real problem for anyone, ever, it would seem). U.S. fair use would probably mean such photos would usually be OK anyways in all but blatantly commercial situations. Carl Lindberg (talk) 18:54, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Many thanks for the information, I will try and incorporate into the presentation I am making at Wikimania. If you're interested I've uploaded a near finished draft at File:Freedom of panorama and Wikimedia Commons.pdf. It doesn't come out very well on the file description page, possibly because I converted it from PowerPoint to pdf with a very high resolution, but it will load fine with Adobe. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. image licence question

Hi.

A quick question. For the image Noah Mills behind the scenes.jpeg can I use this link as a source? And then the blog owner specifies here that "a link to the The Fashionisto homepage will suffice" when using materials from the blog. The blog owner in his turn seems to have all necessary permissions to use the images.

Help me please! Copyright is really such a pain.

--Timur Mustafin (talk) 19:00, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Commons:Licensing#Acceptable licenses goes through what terms are acceptable for use on Commons. A site owner allowing his/her images to be used with a simple request for attribution should be okay, however the main problem here is that the status of the images is very vague. It claims at the bottom of the page that the content is "Copyright © 2008-2011 All rights reserved", suggesting that even if the photos can be used informally, the owner ultimately reserves all rights, which is not really acceptable for Commons. Overall, I would say default to "no" per the precautionary principle. CT Cooper · talk 21:54, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

<noinclude>[[Category:UAE FOP cases which did result in deletion]]</noinclude>

When you add one of the special categories to a DR

  • "Undelete in...." or
  • "FOP cases..."

as you did at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Mag 218 Tower Model.jpg, please be sure to use the form above. Whenever a page is transcluded, any categories are automatically added to the target, so without the noinclude delimiters, not only the DR, but the daily log and the archive pages are all added to the category. This triples the size of the category. Thank you.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 00:20, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

I set-up and added pages to this category in the same way as other editors were adding DRs to other categories, but it was an oversight on my part not to use noinclude. However, this problem is at worst annoying, and going through all the DRs and adding noinclude could be a challenge, but I will look into it. In general, I doubt either of the UAE FOP cases categories are complete, and more help in populating them is always appreciated. CT Cooper · talk 10:20, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I appreciate your recent additions of no-includes. Two suggestions:
  • Could you please mark them as "minor"?
  • You could do this kind of thing much faster with AWB. See Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser for further details. It requires some care -- it is always wise to check the first several before going ahead on a long list. I have added you to the authorized user's list for Commons.
     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 14:36, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
You're welcome. I've made some good progress, though I have stopped for a moment to look into your suggestions. I have taken the liberty of activating AWB before as an English Wikipedia user, though I never got into it, but I will give it another go, since doing it manually is tedious. Thank you for adding me to the authorized user's list. CT Cooper · talk 14:42, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Well I have replaced all the images for the one category, and nothing seems to have broken. Looks like I will keep AWB in my arsenal for occasional use. CT Cooper · talk 15:25, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Can be, But there is no evidence other than a B/w photograph...--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 09:40, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
I see. Logically, in order for an image to correctly be tagged as released under a free license and as PD (copyright expired) there must be at least two elements in the image with different copyright status e.g. if I took a photo of a PD book and uploaded it, the photograph itself would be under a free license, while the book would remain PD. The point I'm coming to is, that only the copyright holder can release works under a free license, but if a work is public domain and the copyright has expired, there is no copyright holder! The Government of Kerala should not be in a position to release the work under a free license. I get the impression that this might be a sweat of the brow issue i.e. the government gains copyright over PD work due to their effort to restore it. However, Commons does not recognize such copyright claims at present, so such images are considered entirely PD on Commons. That said, unlike the National Portrait Gallery, which tried to exert full copyright over old art works, the Government of Kerala has at least released the work under the GFDL, making the point arguably mute, though the GFDL license is awkward to use, so if it can be licensed as just PD, it should be - so a proper assessment on if the image is PD or not, and a working link, would be desirable. CT Cooper · talk 11:22, 22 April 2012 (UTC)
Good note, Can you evaluate the same image (DR) so that my doubt can get cleared such kind of PD images like No author, No publication date, No evidence of PD...--...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 14:41, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

...Captain......Tälk tö me.. 16:05, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, it seems to me that the image was uploaded without much thought for the copyright status and it appears to be very unlikely that the government owned the image and was in a position to license it under the GFDL. It should either be marked as PD, if sufficient evidence exists for it to have this status, or be deleted. CT Cooper · talk 17:37, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Doon

Hi C.T., I did not take the photographs physically and yes, I uploaded them from Ashutosh Dixit's blog on Panoramio, the one you quote. But Ashutosh, who is a good friend of mine and an ex-Dosco, knows that I've uploaded his photos. Will that be a problem? If yes, then you can do whatever is suitable and I guess I'll have to wait to upload my original photographs once Doon re-opens in August. And, though I didn't upload the photos illegally and without consent of the original author, I apologise if I shouldn't have done it! --DoscoinDoon (talk) 09:48, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Also, I just saw the tags on all teachers' pictures where I have marked them out of copyright in the USA. I initially intended to mark them out of copyright in India (which they are and i remember seeing such a template) but not finding one at that moment, I marked it 'in USA' and thought it could be changed to 'India' later on. Yes, of course, it cannot be out of copyright in the USA (<1923) but they definitely are in India (<1960). So please can you change the tags to out of copyright in India, which was my initial intention. Thanks and sorry for giving you so much trouble.--DoscoinDoon (talk) 09:54, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

On the photos, currently they are uploaded incorrectly as your own work, which will need to be corrected. I would suggest asking your friend to send an e-mail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org with a clear statement that he is the author, with a link to all the files involved (in other words, all the colour photos here) and then a declaration that he releases the photos under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license (the one you tagged the images with). Everything should sort itself out after that.
On the pictures of the headmasters, PD marked content on Commons and Wikipedia has to be public domain in both the country of origin (India in this case) and in the United States, where the servers are hosted. We have already had a problem with w:File:Lord Mountbatten with A.E. Foot in Doon School (1948).jpg, as you can see at w:Talk:The Doon School#File:Lord Mountbatten with A.E. Foot in Doon School (1948).jpg, as the Uruguay Round Agreements Act results in public domain files in India staying copyrighted in the United States. In short, this photos must have been PD in India by 1 January, 1996, otherwise they will stay copyrighted in the US until 95 years after publication. I will re-tag the images as {{PD-India-URAA}}, but you will need to amend the files to provide the date, or at least the circa year, that the images were created so the project can be sure they are PD - you can put this in the summary box for each file e.g. File:J.A.K. Martyn, The Doon School.JPG#Summary - the date parameter is for date of creation, not upload. Adding the exact photographer, if known, would also be helpful. CT Cooper · talk 20:00, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
I have gone through your PD photo uploads and corrected the date and authors to unknown, ready for you insert the information, however there are three files I have specific comments to make on:
  • File:The Oxford Cricket Team (with RL Holdsworth), 1922.jpg is from the UK, not India. Photographs become public domain later in the UK compared to India, with the time required being the death of the author + 70 years, so this photo may go either way depending on who the author was. I note the source marks it as copyrighted but I suspect this may be copyfraud. I have presently tagged it as {{PD-UK-unknown}}, as the author is unknown, but this is subject to "reasonable enquiry" by the uploader.
  • File:Sheel Vohra, The Doon School.jpg was originally uploaded as your own work, but I have guessed this was from the website I have added as a source, so I have re-tagged it as public domain. The deletion request I filed earlier can be closed once some author and date information have been provided.
  • File:Aerial of The Doon School Main Building 1919.JPG is fine as it is pre-1923, and I have tagged it as PD India.
CT Cooper · talk 20:45, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for such an elaborate response. I will ask my friend to send the e-mail right away. Also, I will try to provide the relevant dates for headmasters and that means I'll have to rummage the school archives. Anyway, that is no trouble. It'll be done. But, once again, sorry for all this mess :P And thanks very much for guiding me. (I'll just ask my friend to send the mail)--DoscoinDoon (talk) 09:04, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

There is still a Eurovision Song Contest 2013 logo in Commons, uploaded on 11 September 2012 by RAX2012: File:The Eurovision Song Contest 2013.svg. Baskesc (talk) 08:50, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for letting me know. Unfortunately I think there will be a problem here of people re-uploading these logos innocently, so I might look into creating a notice to place on the category pages asking them not to transfer such logos here - I already did one that was similar for Category:Royal Horticultural Society. CT Cooper · talk 21:55, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
The same user has uploaded it again: File:ESC 2013.svg. Sorry to bother you again. Baskesc (talk) 15:56, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
No need for apologies - well spotted and thank you. I have marked it for deletion and given the user a polite warning not to re-upload deleted content. CT Cooper · talk 17:39, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, too. Now there is a user who has uploaded a modified version of the logo: File:Malmo-2013.png. The user claims its his own creation. The same user has put it into the infobox in es:Festival de la Canción de Eurovisión 2013, the Spanish wikipedia. In one edit summary the user says: Por favor alguien oscurezca el fondo del cuadro para que se note el logo que he colgado. Translated: "Please someone darken the infobox background so that the logo I have uploaded goes unnoticed". Baskesc (talk) 17:38, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip-off, I have given this user a warning to stop uploading copyvios. CT Cooper · talk 11:52, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Wikimedia UK is committed to supporting our volunteers and to encourage them to teach others how to edit Wikipedia, we are running a weekend training workshop. When the last event was held you noted your interest but were unable to attend and the planned event in Newcastle wasn't convenient for you. However, the venue has been changed to Manchester, so if you're interested more details on the event (which will be held on the weekend of 23–24 February) can be found here. Permission for a picture

Hi. I sent an e-mail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org early a few minutes ago. The file's name is "Stoyan Tsvetkov" and I need them for the article "Стоян Цветков (актьор)" in bg.wikipedia. If there is a text in Bulgarian, copy it here and I will translate it. --Batman tas (talk) 18:47, 25 February 2013 (UTC)that

I'm afraid I can't help you. I don't have control of e-mails sent to that e-mail address, so I can't verify permission. Someone with OTRS access should respond to your message shortly. CT Cooper · talk 22:14, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh, sorry. I thought that you have OTRS. Could you, please, show me a list of OTRS owners, so I could write to them. During the past year I have asked Mabdul a few times and he did the job, but now he is unavailable. --Batman tas (talk) 14:49, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

File:Wpeurovisionlogo.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

many images

Hi CT I was adding images to Category:Birds of the United Arab Emirates and found many images of Acridotheres tristis in the grounds of the Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort and Spa in Dubai. They rather dominate the gallery and would you mind if I just leave the best ones? Charles (talk) 15:44, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Charles. I had tonnes of them – I could have uploaded even more; I tried to stick to the better quality images, though one can argue I should have been even more selective. As a general practice, if I digitally edit an image then I always upload both the original and the edited version so people can make their own changes or use the original if they don't like what I've done. From what I can see, the images are not currently in a gallery except my own. If you want to create one, then feel free to just select a small number. In terms of categories, there is room for further sub-categories such as "Birds of Duabi". CT Cooper · talk 16:04, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

RfC on the scope of file renaming criterion 2

Pursuant to the closing of the RFC "Proposed overhaul of the "Which files should be renamed?" section", a second RfC has been opened at Commons:Requests for comment/File renaming criterion 2 specifically to address the scope of criterion 2, which currently reads "To change from a completely meaningless name to a name that describes what the image displays." Since you participated in the initial discussion, I am notifying you of the follow-up RfC.

Please note that I fully anticipate that the first few days will see a number of additional options proposed, so it may be a good idea to check back periodically on the RfC.

Hi

Hello, my name is Obinna Alozie. I am a Penn State student at University Park. I just wanted to inform you that i will be using some of your images for a film project about Kenya. I don't know how many, but i wanted to ask for your permission. Thank you.

Hi, Obinna. I'm glad you are finding my images useful. You don't need my permission to use them, as they are all either released in the public domain or released under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (CC-BY 3.0) license. This means that at most, you only need to provide attribution (credit) when using my images. Something like "The photograph was taken by Christopher T Cooper" will be fine. You will find more information at User:CT Cooper/License information. Please let me know if you need any further assistance. CT Cooper · talk 17:28, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

In my opinion, it is purely disruptive. It is a simple text logo, meaning that even if it is copyrighted, it can be used here on Commons. I suggest that you read COM:TOO. DLindsley Need something? 19:24, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

I have, I would suggest you do too. I'm not following your "even if it is copyrighted" point at all. Copyrighted works are not allowed here; a basic principle of this project is that it hosts public domain and freely licensed material only, as per Commons:Licensing. CT Cooper · talk 19:34, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
Also, let's not start a dispute on the DR. Let's try to keep cool heads. DLindsley Need something? 19:46, 28 December 2014 (UTC)
Having disputes isn't an issue as long as they are resolved appropriately. Keeping a cool head is a good idea, and in the DR I have responded to your arguments and your arguments alone in a firm manner. I appreciate that you have now done the same thing, but if I'm honest with you, I didn't think bringing this to my talk page was necessary and opening a comment with "Purely disruptive nomination" isn't very cool headed and may be interpreted as a failure to assume good faith. Dear Christopher, I think that the animals in your picture "Nanger granti group near the Voyager Ziwani Safari Camp..." http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nanger_granti_group_near_the_Voyager_Ziwani_Safari_Camp,_on_the_edge_of_the_Tsavo_West_National_Park,_near_Ziwani,_Kenya.jpg are not Grant's gazelles but Impalas. I'm not a specialist, but I spend a lot of time on http://www.snapshotserengeti.org and now I can see differences between Grants , Thomsons and Impalas :)

Best Regards Laurent Hayvel

Hello Laurent,
Thanks for the heads up. I'll look into it and re-name the files if needed. CT Cooper · talk 16:35, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
I don't think they're Impalas as they all have horns, which doesn't make sense as only the males of that species have horns. Their coat colour doesn't seem to quite match that of a typical Grant's gazelle, though there are various sub-species with slightly different coat colours and horn shapes. Only one of these images has not been nominated previously. Two have been nominated twice before and File:Entrance to the Burj Al Arab.jpg (what do people have against this image?) has actually been nominated five times now. Though I honestly don't care about which way this goes any more – if they're kept, then good for those that care, but if they're deleted it will mean some peace and quiet and no more endless re-runs of deletion requests. I shall however just leave what I said in the last DR here:

I understand that people can get frustrated when they clean out a category of copyright violating images only for them to be filled-up again shortly afterwards, having been in that position myself multiple times while I was active here. Putting aside that much of the blame for this should go to systemic issues with Commons, many contributors try to do the right thing and it is not fair on them to just declare open season on all images in a category, especially as anyone can add or remove an image from a category. At the very minimum, people nominating images for deletion should be checking that the uploads are not already subject to a DR, haven't been subject to one recently and the contents of the images justify the nominated reasons for deletion. I accept that there are some situations when an image can/should be re-nominated for deletion but there ought to be some kind of explanation on why the nominator thinks the original decision should be put aside, especially if it was made recently, and mass DRs are not well suited for such images.

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

@大诺史: All the nominated images have been DRed either twice or thrice before and I've made my position clear in those DRs -- my policy now is to no longer participate in DRs on my own uploads when they concern FOP and if they get deleted, they get deleted. The reason for this is I have just had enough of having to re-fight the same battles over and over again with the same images. CT Cooper · talk 16:54, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

I won't be involving myself in the DR as it's not my problem anymore, but the instructions at Template:NoFoP-UAE are clear on what the template exists for. CT Cooper · talk 14:37, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
