You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Image transfer from Wikipedia to Commons[edit]

Cropping images[edit]

By way of information for the future, when you want to crop an image, as you did with File:New Rockford banner.jpg I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops, like this one, you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. Wiki Loves Africa 2019[edit]

Dear Ccmpg,

You have contributed in the past to the Wiki Loves Africa competition. Your images have helped people learn more about Africa and see Africa more clearly from an African perspective. Overall, nearly 5000 people like you have contributed to this photo contest, and contributed nearly 40000 images about Africa. Pictures from Wiki Loves Africa illustrate more than 7000 Wikipedia articles and they received... 278.859.973 views between 2015 through the end of 2018. WOW ! How does it feel to be part of this and really make a difference when it come to Africa representation on Wikipedia ?

This February, you have another opportunity to create beautiful photographs on the theme of "play" that could change how the world understands people and culture in your part of Africa.

Wiki Loves Africa is a annual public contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video and audio) about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation.

When does it take place?
The 2019 competition will start on 1st February 2019 and close on 1st March 2019.

What should we contribute?
Pictures ! audios ! videos ! The theme for the 2019 contest is... Play.
This theme encompasses a host of approaches and is intentionally open to interpretation. The theme Play! encourages the submission of visual representations of joyful and serious games, sport, and recreation in the form of board or mental games, physical fun or contests, playful interactions, theatrical and musical performances, etc.

In addition to the value your photos contribute to human understanding and african visibility on the Internet, there are several prizes on offer – including two separate prize categories for photos and media that encompass

(a) capture Women in sport or
(b) culturally specific and traditional formal forms of play, recreation or events.

Depuis sa création en 2014, près de 5000 personnes ont contribué au concours photo, en ajoutant près de 40000 photos relatives à l'Afrique. 5000 personnes, dont vous, qui ont fait une vraie différence sur la représentation de l'Afrique sur Wikipédia et en ligne. Mieux encore... ces photos illustrent aujourd'hui près de 7000 articles Wikipédia et totalisent 278.859.973 vues entre 2015 et fin 2018 !

Ce mois de février vous avez à nouveau l'opportunité de proposer de fabuleuses illustrations sur le thème du "Jeu", qui participeront à changer la façon dont les êtres humains à travers le monde comprennent les habitants et la culture de votre région..

Wiki Loves Africa, c’est un concours public annuel où chacun est invité à partager des illustrations via Wikimedia Commons, en rapport avec le thème de l’année, illustrations qui pourront être utilisées sur Wikipédia ou les autres sites de la Wikimedia Foundation.

Quand le concours se déroule t-il?
Le concours 2019 démarre le 1er février 2019 et cloture le 1er mars 2019.

Quelles sont les contenus attendus?
Des photos ! Des enregistrements audio ! Des vidéos ! Le thème du concours 2019 est ... Jouer.
Ce thème englobe de nombreuses approches, il est aussi intentionnellement ouvert à l’interprétation. Le thème Jouer ! encourage à proposer des représentations de jeux de détente et sérieux, du sport et des divertissements sous la forme de jeux de société ou de jeux intellectuels, d'activités physiques de divertissement ou de compétitions, d'interactions ludiques, de performances théâtrales ou musicales, etc..

En plus de la valeur intrinsèque que vos photos apporteront à la compréhension et à la visibilité du monde africain sur Internet, il y a de nombreux prix à gagner. Dont deux prix spéciaux pour les photos qui représentent

a) femmes et sport ou
b) formes de jeux, de divertissements ou d’évènements culturellement spécifiques ou traditionnels.

Wiki Loves Earth France 2019 a commencé ![edit]

J'ai le plaisir de vous annoncer que la cinquième édition du concours Wiki Loves Earth en France est ouverte !

Le concours concernera 368 zones de toute la France, des parcs nationaux jusqu’aux réserves naturelles régionales englobant ainsi des paysages et biotopes variés.

Pendant le mois de mai, n'hésitez pas à mettre en ligne des photos de ces zones que vous auriez sur vos disques durs ou à vous rendre dans une zone concernée près de chez vous (à l'aide de la carte). Le règlement est disponible sur la page du concours.

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé de commonistes, d'acteurs de l'environnement et de photographes professionnels. Un jury international constituera ensuite une sélection des meilleures photographies mondiales. Vous pourrez retrouver toutes les informations détaillées sur le site du concours

Wiki Loves Monuments France 2019[edit]

Bonjour,

Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est de retour et ouvert jusqu'à 31 septembre ! Déjà 8309 photos ont été importés cette année, vous aussi rejoignez le concours !

Le concours concerne tous les monuments présents dans la base Mérimée (qu'ils soient classés, inscrits ou simplement classés). De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la chapelle au coin de la rue aux mégalithes en forêt, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Où que vous soyez il y a des monuments autour de chez vous. Enfin, vous pouvez mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments. Pour information, le règlement est disponible sur le site du concours. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international sélectionnera ensuite des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

We are writing because you have participated in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) photo competition in the past. Results have been published and winning pictures may be seen here !

This year WLA partnered with the research organization CAT Lab (previously CivilServant) to help us evaluate the effectiveness of one of our recruitment efforts. You may or may not have received a message on your user talk page encouraging you to participate again in this year's competition.

We are excited to share with you their study found our recruitment message was a success and may have resulted in as many as 2,000 additional contributed photos. We hope you agree this is great news for Africa and its representation across Wikimedia. You can read more about the study and the results in this blog post.

Septembrie 2020: A început Wiki Loves Monuments în România![edit]

Deși trecem prin momente dificile în aceste vremuri imprevizibile generate de pandemia de COVID-19, competiția Wiki Loves Monuments are loc și anul acesta, implicit și în România.

Am fi încântați dacă ați participa și în acest an la documentarea fotografică a patrimoniului nostru cultural construit. Întrucât o carantină nu este programată în România, puteți să ieșiți în continuare să faceți fotografii - luând toate măsurile de siguranță recomandate de autoritățile locale de sănătate. Dacă preferați să evitați ieșirile, cu siguranță aveți fotografii cu monumente înregistrate pe calculator din ultima călătorie! Aceasta este o oportunitate excelentă de a le oferi o a doua viață prin concursului Wiki Loves Monuments. Pe lângă faptul că vor fi vizibile pentru toată lumea, fotografiile dumneavoastră ar putea reprezenta România în competiția internațională. De asemenea ele pot apărea în diverse articole la Wikipedia și pot contribui la conservarea online a patrimoniului cultural și istoric al României.

Je fais une recherche sur ce lien pour que l'élément apparaisse à partir de son identifiant "openstreetmap", puis je l'exporte vers [1] pour en faire ce que je veux graphiquement avec le choix du fond de carte en plus. Après, c'est un copie d'écran vers commons. Cela me permet de faire figurer les limites territoriales voulues ou des cours d'eau, par exemple.

Plus que quelques jours pour participer à Wiki Loves Monuments France ![edit]

Bonjour,

Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est ouvert pour une semaine encore, jusqu'au 30 septembre. Déjà plus de 6 000 photos ont été importées cette année alors vous aussi rejoignez le concours ! Cette campagne de contribution concerne tous les monuments et objets mobiliers présents dans la base Mérimée et dans la base Palissy. De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la verrière décorative au reliquaire, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Vous pouvez dès à présent mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments et objets du patrimoine français. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international constituera ensuite une sélection des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Si vous avez des questions, l'équipe organisatrice se fera un plaisir d'y répondre.

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

@Peter in s: Bonjour. Si la carte est erronée, c'est parce que les données OSM sont fausses. Il me faudrait les données complètes des relations ou chemins sur OSM qui correspondent réellement au Bouregreg pour que je puisse corriger cette carte. Dans le bassin versant du Bouregreg se trouvent quelques failles. Sur OSM il s'agit de l'"Oued Tanoubert (6026259)", en réalité un affluent du Bouregreg, ou de l'"Oued Ksiksou (258539634)", une rivière source du Bouregreg. Vous pouvez le voir très bien sur cette ou cette carte. J'apporte de petites modifications à OSM, mais je n'ai pas assez d'expérience pour y remédier. Bien mieux, maintenant c'est au moins la bonne rivière. Cependant, le Tanoubert est désormais une rivière source et non plus un affluent. Si vous enlevez "Oued Tanoubert (137227111)" et ajoutez à la place la moitié de "Oued Ksiksou (258539634)" (jusqu'à confluence avec "Oued Aguennour (97965859)"), c'est parfait. Ance (rivière)[edit]

Bonjour, J'ai noté une petite erreur sur la carte de l'Ance: La flèche sur la carte est orientée dans le mauvais sens. Carte des sommets de plus de 4000m des Alpes Pennines[edit]

La carte suivante est bien faite mais comporte une erreur : https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/ba/Sommet_4000m_Alpes_pennines.png

La Cima di Scoperta n'est pas un 4000 officiel selon la liste UIAA mais seulement un sommet secondaire. En revanche, le Breithornzwillinge (ou Eastern Breithorn Twin) 4106m, situé entre le "Breithorn Oriental" et "Roccia Nera" n'est pas présent alors qu'il fait partie de la liste.
