Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Guerillero!

You're now a filemover[edit]

Hi Guerillero/Archive 1, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one.
  • Please do not tag redirects as {{Speedy}}. Other projects, like InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
  • For guideline when to rename a file, please see here.

POTY[edit]

Why on earth was I rejected as an eligible voter for POTY? I know for a fact that I meet the eligibility requirement, so I can only presume that I misentered my entry. Please clarify for me; this is quite irritating. 98.82.6.181 01:21, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Did you read the message I left on User talk:HuskyHuskie. Because the == POTY ==

How does one go about linkaccount is not unified I can only work off of the commons account. --Guerillero 01:25, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How does one go about linking their accounts? Cheers! Goyston (talk) 01:48, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is the meta page -> Single Unified Login (SUL) account. cheers --Guerillero 01:52, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, done. Thanks! Goyston (talk) 02:30, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Eligable POTY[edit]

I notice you crossed of User:Kylelovesyou as being eligable to vote but I checked and got this. Not thinking about transperancey I change it to pass but because its on one of my images I have reverted and made a note at COM:AN about my actions, can please review this users vote that you have tagged an ineligable. Thanks Gnangarra 07:09, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Per Gnangarra here. The user has linked to an incorrect Commons user page but uf you look at their contribs they are eligible. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:40, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Per the rules as it stands, if a person does not have a SUL they need to confirm they are the same person in both pages with each account. cheers --Guerillero 22:12, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Checked and failed?[edit]

Here you said that User:T24G is not eligible to vote, but the user has more than 200 edits on English wikipedia. Could you please clarify where you see the problem? Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 15:10, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also another user User:Kylelovesyou in the same nomination has more than 200 contributions on English wikipedia--Mbz1 (talk) 15:17, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The same users was checked out on this nomination too, and in quite a few other nominations--Mbz1 (talk) 15:30, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Mbz1 I put him in the ineligible category because he does not have a SUL and he has yet to confirm he is the same person on commons AND on en-wikipedia. I have placed messages on T24G's commons and en-wikipedia talk pages and I have yet to get a reply. cheers --Guerillero 22:09, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but this could be checked differently too: If you go here and click "Global contribs", it would take you here, and then you could see his contributions on English wiki. The same with User:Kylelovesyou. Cheers.--Mbz1 (talk) 22:17, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We have a tool to check if the accounts are linked via a SUL here and it changed from red to green. I will go change it before the end of the night. cheers --Guerillero 22:37, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
T24G on the other hand is still in the red. link He has yet to unify his account so they need to be done manually. I will see if he has sometime tonight --Guerillero 22:39, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maps for free[edit]

Hello, I wanted to review your uploads from maps-for-free but there are a few open questions:

On the page given in the permission section, I found that the relief maps can be reused under GNU Free Documentation license 1.2 or later. Why did you use {{free screenshot|license={{GPL}} }}?

If it is published under GFDL, attribution is required. We have to mention Hans Braxmeier as the author? -- RE rillke questions? 21:16, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Odd. I guess this will teach me not to take the word of long time wikipedians at face value. The original licensing scheme was a bit odd. I guess that should have been a sign to check everything very very closely. I know that I did visit that page because I didn't use the creative commons license that was part of the the original request. I asked the person who requested the uploads, she should reply today. Guerillero 18:30, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that the batch that I uploaded is not the only ones that need changed. A few others and myself will get to work at rectifying the situation. --Guerillero 01:24, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

While performing a websearch for one of your uploaded image, I found this image embedded on on this website. It is the website of a public school in New York City. It is now your turn to figure out what to do. -- RE rillke questions? 21:30, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I nominated it for speedy deletion based on that. I looked over the schools website and it appears that nothing on its website is under a creative commons license. --Guerillero 17:42, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have a dream[edit]

When I realized it was not PD, I forgot to delete this after I moved it locally. Good catch.--TonyTheTiger (talk) 12:26, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rockwell posters from NARA[edit]

Hi Guerillero. I would suggest that you take these images to DR, rather than requesting speedy deletion. They are only marked "possibly" copyrighted in the catalog, and they are actually displayed on NARA's site, which isn't normal practice for works known to be copyrighted. I think it deserves a discussion, in case of some extenuating circumstance like a lack of renewal.

As an aside, 8 huge, identical warning banners in a row is kind of overkill, especially for someone who knows what they are doing. Maybe you could have just left one message? Dominic (talk) 21:56, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. The script that I use does not give me the chance to not give out the notices. cheers --Guerillero 21:57, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

question[edit]

Hi Guerillero, I just wanted to make sure you got my email from the last night. Thanks.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:12, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, File from NARA should not be speedy deleted. I converted your request to a proper deletion request. Regards, Yann (talk) 06:40, 10 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Images on English Wikipedia's bad image list[edit]

Hi Guerillero, I have created Category:Images on English Wikipedia's bad image list and all images at en:MediaWiki:Bad image list are now categorised into it. I have started going thru some of the files, and will continue to do so, and have made a few deletions. I will list files here so that you can make amendments and the like to the list if need be. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

File:The Wonder Years.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

On this template, there seems to be an oddly large break between the Data and Final maps headers (see any of the translc's to see what I am talking about). Also I'd suggest using L3 headers and not L2 headers for these. --AdmrBoltz 15:01, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:1983pasca.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:States of India (Survey of India).pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Quick question[edit]

Hi Guerillero,

Do you remember which VRT inbox you sent an email to that contains the permission for the Outline of Indian States? I trust that you've sent it in, but I'm having trouble finding the email and the file has been without a license for over seven days. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 02:58, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
