Translating text in an image file - how to manage multiple versions of same image in different languages?

I noticed that the English Wikipedia article on CA-125 includes this image, which contains text in Chinese. I have found another version of the same image with English text, and wanted to upload it as a new version of the image file. However, I see that this image is already in use across several other Wikipedias, including the Chinese Wikipedia. Is there an accepted way of handling multiple translations of the same image, or should I just upload the new image with a different filename (e.g., "The_Structure_of_MUC16_English.png") and change the image link in the English Wikipedia?

Thanks! Nmael (talk) 23:37, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

@Nmael: regardless of whether or not a file is in use, it should not be overwritten with a different image. Versions in other languages, or other variants (extracts, collages, recolourings, &c.), can be linked in the Other versions field of the info template on the file-description page: we have various templates like {{Other}} to display a thumbnail & link there. And yes, for cases like these it’s common (but not required) to use similar filenames except for the appropriate language name or standard code (which would be EN here).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:26, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: Makes sense - I will pursue uploading the translated image as a separate file and link it as an "other version." Thanks! Nmael (talk) 00:53, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Face recognition

Commons have huge data of images of huge no. of humans. Would it be possible to use image recognition and landmark recognition to auto categorise images? Capankajsmilyo (talk) 04:08, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Theoretically yes but I am not aware of any plans by WMF to do this. Ruslik (talk) 20:38, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
There is a phabricator task for it now. However, it might be possible to do it locally without phab as well. One of the opensource scripts out there is https://github.com/anubhavshrimal/FaceRecognition If someone can guide me to the process of running python script on commons, I would love to give it a try. Capankajsmilyo (talk) 12:07, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
Any guidance? Capankajsmilyo (talk) 04:27, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

"Invalid CSRF token."

This image keeps occurring on my wife's BlackBerry.

Recently due to some camera 📷 issues I have stopped using my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL phablet in favour of my wife's BlackBerry (with Google Android) for taking and uploading images (as it was a hassle to keep sending large amounts of files 📁 through her Google Mail to my Microsoft Outlook Mail 📧 to then manually download them, save them locally, and then upload them), but for some reason I have this recurring error where every time the first time I attempt to upload an image through the Mobile UploadWizard via Google Chrome I get this error message stating that there's an invalid CSRF token, I strangely enough never get this error on my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL, even if I upload images I took on my beautiful wife's BlackBerry. If this issue only happened once or twice I wouldn't be bothered with it, but every time I attempt to upload a single image or a batch of images (from which this error only occurs with the first image selected) I get this notification, is there something I can do to fix it? I don't seem to get this error on the Wikimedia Commons Google Play application, at least not knowingly. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 01:32, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

@Donald Trung: What's the full URL for the Mobile UploadWizard you're using? Do you make sure to refresh that page and its cookies before starting to upload? And in case your wife reads this, which is beautiful, her, her BlackBerry, or both? :)   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 02:16, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Well the URL is "https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard" and I don't exactly clear her cookies and sometimes I refresh the UploadWizard and sometimes I simply click on "Upload more files" as it doesn't really change where I end up but if I upload 40 (forty) files I prefer to refresh so I won't have to scroll all the way down but the results are the same (including the error messages I get). Also my wife is beautiful, almost all cell.-phones and phablets produced from circa 2012 onwards look almost generically the same (I personally can see the beauty and elegance in the design but not so to call a single specimen out). The odd thing about the bug is that I never seem to get it twice for the same file, I just click "Retry the failed uploads" and it always works, while with connectivity related errors and other errors I don't seem to get this as the error usually repeats itself in those cases. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 02:26, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

Is Sample in Public Domain?

I've acquired a load of short snippets from old films that I'm hoping to sample in some music. I can't find ANYTHING about these films online, or on this sit, but didn't know if anyone would be able to help me on here. The films are titled THE DEPRESSION, ONE FEOTUS LEFT! and COSMIC MISSION. Unfortunately I don't have a date for them, but they all sound like from they're from the U.S.A. around the 30s/40s. Is anyone able to help? Also it's worth noting that I'm based in the United Kingdom. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.25.121.136 (talk • contribs) 18:13, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

US copyright is expired for work older than published before 1923 (sorry, Jmabel is right), for movies from the 30s/40s they would have to have been released without a copyright notice or have their copyright not renewed. This may not matter for you though as you live in the UK. For you (and this is also valid for US movies) the copyright will expire when everyone who worked on the movie (especially scriptwriters and cameramen) has been dead for 70 years. It's a bit more complicated than that but the 1923 date doesn't apply to you. Although if you release the sampled music worldwide (including US) it will apply to you. Long story short: forget it really. - Alexis Jazz 21:30, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
"for work older than 1923" => "for work published before 1923". If not published, the rules are different. - Jmabel ! talk 22:50, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
"everyone who worked on the movie" => not true. Typically, this will have een work for hire, and there will be a single holder of the copyright, which may or may not have been renewed (relevant for the U.S. in that period).
Titles sound unlikely for U.S. at that date, though.
Probably not enough info in your question to get a good answer, but if you can be a bit more specific we might sort it out.
Probably better asked at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 22:50, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
Yes, it all depends on the details but we don't know any details. More information is needed to be able to answer this question. - Alexis Jazz 11:30, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

where to ask for korean alphabet pronounciation

Hello,

I'm french so I was searching the "Bistro" (an informal discussion page on wikipedia) but couldn't found here so I hope my question is mostly in the correct part.

I wanted to know if there was a space where one could request a sound to be uploaded ?

I saw that the Category:Korean_pronunciation_of_alphabet is void, but I would need them for a wikibook.

Where can I ask it ?

Do you think it's possible to have complete phrases pronounced ?

Thanks in advance

Photo upload

I have uploaded a photo: File:Jan Foudraine - foto van Marijke Foudraine-Kranenburg, gemaakt door Charline Goud.jpg. I thought I have followed all the instructions about source, license etc, but now I get a message on my user page from a moderator that it's wrong:

This media file is missing essential source information. The author and source of the file must be given, so that others can verify the copyright status. Edit the file description page to add source information.
Unless this issue is resolved, the file will be deleted seven days after this tag was added (29 April 2018).

But I do not understand what is wrong: I have given that info.

Please explain what needs to happen. Thanks! --Sensor66 (talk) 07:30, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

@Sensor66: Sometimes, it's hard to know if a new user really has the permission to upload a photo. Have you seen the OTRS system? —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:36, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
More specifically: if the source linked to a particular page on Charline Goud's site, which was specific about the license, that would be enough. However, with just a general assertion of permission, we need to go through the OTRS process. - Jmabel ! talk 15:56, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Koavf and Jmabel, clear now, the OTRS system is what I needed. --Sensor66 (talk) 18:48, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

"Failed attempt to log in to Wikipedia as Donald Trung"

I received an e-mail 📧 that stated "There has been a failed attempt to log in to your account from a new device. Please make sure your account has a strong password.", is there a way that I can know what device was used to attempt to sign into my account by this unknown third party, can the Wikimedia Foundation see what IP address was used and is there a place I can request to know this? After how many attempts do I get notified? This is the first time that I have received this e-mail. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:33, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

I received a similar e-mail as well. It was timestamped Thu 03/05/2018 21:22. Martinvl (talk) 20:50, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
FWIW, these are coming from failed attempts at en:WP. I have notifications ticked for both e-mail and web in both places. I now sign in here only and there's no e-mail notice or post to my TP here re: failed Commons login. I received an e-mail re: the WP account and an alert about it from en:WP; I got nothing about any tries here at Commons.
Looking around over there, I see there are many people who have had the same thing happen. Wonder if it's not coming from here. That resolves to this ip where there's something about the proxy being a TOR site in 2017-"Well, it's a TOR exit node trying to breach a site via what appears to be an infected Wordpress theme. Just ban it.". The IP has yet to be blocked at en:WP. We hope (talk) 21:11, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
I got the same notification. I was wondering who I had pissed off. Apparently nobody. It links to mw:Help:Login notifications which answers some of your questions. For unknown devices/IPs you get a notice even for just one failed attempt. - Alexis Jazz 21:19, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

How should "2012 photographs of New Taipei" category be used?

As you see, photo shows blue seas and Gueishan Island. As far as I know, this scenery is located in Toucheng Township, Yilan County, but the photographer to take pictures on the mountain in New Taipei City. My question is, Which category do you think is suitable, it is should"Category:2012 photographs of New Taipei", or "Category:2012 photographs of Yilan"?--Kai3952 (talk) 01:08, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

@Kai3952: If a photo shows different things (in this case, in foreground and background), you can use multiple categories for those things it shows.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 01:17, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Doing so may cause "new problems." This is why I must choose one of the two.--Kai3952 (talk) 05:42, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: I doubt that, but stick to the existing cat if you want to play it safe.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 05:51, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Because everyone's understanding is different. This is where the problem. If I add "Category:2012 photographs of New Taipei" and "Category:2012 photographs of Yilan," then it will happen:
  • This category is called "2012 photographs of Yilan," and photo shows this scenery is located in Yilan, why do you add "2012 photographs of New Taipei" category?
  • The photographer to take pictures in New Taipei, and not Yilan, why do you add "2012 photographs of Yilan" category? How can one person be in two places at the same damn time?!
As you can see, they will think I should not add both "Category:2012 photographs of New Taipei" and "Category:2012 photographs of Yilan" in the same photo.--Kai3952 (talk) 10:04, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

some images are solid black

You are providing a wonderful service. I have used 17 images for a book I am writing. I can see them clearly on my computer. There are some images in the same area that just look solid black on my computer but I found alternatives for them.

Three other images look good on my computer and just look like a black rectangle after I load them to my publisher's website. Can you help, please? The image files are: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sucrose_structure__formula.png. Author: Bas

Or try the vector (.SVG) versions instead. If the book is to be printed, they’ll yield sharper reproductions anyway. You can also easily make them match the text font of your book, colour them, &c., unlike the raster files. The only drawback is that they might need conversion to PDF or EPS format for compatibility with publishing applications. Anyway, the PNGs I looked at above seemed normal. (Sounds like they may have lost their mask channels in transit somewhere; the quickest solution might be to open & resave them—with any paint or photo program—in black & white, unless your design needs them to be transparent.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:24, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
@Paulherbertsharpe: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/Sucrose_structure_formula.png and https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b3/Sucrose-inkscape.svg/1280px-Sucrose-inkscape.svg.png are just the same thing, except an H. was added. (why? was the original wrong?) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/10/Palmitic_acid_structure.png is the same as https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/ba/Palmitic_acid.svg/1060px-Palmitic_acid.svg.png but the latter looks better. If you can, you should use File:Sucrose-inkscape.svg and File:Palmitic acid.svg. - Alexis Jazz 10:06, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
@Paulherbertsharpe: The images have a transparent background layer. Whatever publishing process you are using is probably rendering these with a black background rather than white, i.e. you are trying to display black text written against a black page. It may also be that your browser is displaying the image with a black background, which is what happens when I try to view the PNG in Chrome. If you use a downloaded version of the PNG formatted file and open in an image editor or other preview tool, you will probably see these perfectly well. You may have to work out how to edit the file and save in different formats that your publisher will accept, in the process choosing a background colour. See https://www.gimp.org/ for an suitable open source image editor that many volunteers use and is capable of handling this task. -- (talk) 10:38, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

"Source" for photo emailed to me

I want to use a photo that was emailed to me by the author (photographer) with permission for me to use it on Wikipedia. The photo is not on the internet or in a book or published elsewhere. I listed the author's name as "Source" for the photo. I received a warning that I need to provide "Source" info or the photo may be deleted. What should I enter for "Source"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr.bobbs (talk • contribs) 00:01, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

Please, see Commons:OTRS. It would be the best if the author e-mailed the specified e-mail address to confirm their permission. Ruslik (talk) 08:39, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
Also, for Commons, "permission ... to use it on Wikipedia" is not enough. We need a specific, sufficiently free, license. - Jmabel ! talk 14:59, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

CD Cover Artwork

I am TRYING to upload a jpg of a CD cover to put on a page I'm currently editing (about the CD!). This artwork was done for the artist (I work for him) BY ME and is MY WORK. If there are any copyrights, they are MINE. Yet ... the photo was deleted in no time without giving me a chance to claim ownership. How can I avoid this ... I need this file uploaded -- as well as others that *I have personally done* and they are MY intellectual property. There will be other CD covers and a book cover. I don't want to get through all the work and log in to realize my files have arbitrarily been deleted each time. Please tell me how to properly upload these files so I can use them. Thank you. --Debraannclark (talk) 02:43, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

@Debraannclark: Please send permission via OTRS.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:00, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Thank you - I'm a newbie. How can I avoid this in the future when I upload? --Debraannclark (talk) 03:18, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

@Debraannclark: your contact with OTRS need not concern only a single file; copyright owners can identify themselves with a particular Commons account or give it a blanket authorization to apply appropriate licences to their work. I believe you will then get a single OTRS ticket number with which to tag all the files that are covered.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:34, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: One could get a template with a ticket number. Non-members may not directly tag with a ticket number.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:45, 6 May 2018 (UTC)
Right, thanks for pointing that out: I shouldn’t have implied users can verify their own tickets. I wasn’t sure how the tagging would be implemented, but I supposed one could post at COM:OTRSN after uploading.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:04, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

I truly appreciate the help. I'm learning how little I know about this. --Debraannclark (talk) 15:49, 6 May 2018 (UTC)

Category for this type of Library, if it is even that

I took a photo yesterday of a "Library Box", the inscription says LittleFreeLibrary.org Take a book, return a book. I can't find anything else like it on Commons. @Mjrmtg: https://littlefreelibrary.org/ourhistory/ says "In 2017 we surpassed 60,000 registered Little Free Libraries in all U.S. states and over 80 countries." I think Category:Little Free Libraries would be appropriate, under Category:Outdoor libraries and Category:Libraries by association. Agree. I have seen this kind of thing before on local European news as well, although they just put some book shelves outside IIRC. Picture of a UK statue

I'm trying to upload a self-taken picture of a statue. I'm in the UK, so {{FoP-UK}} should cover it but the upload wizard won't accept that as a valid license. A quick peruse of the helpdesk suggests that I can release the image using my preferred license, then add that template once I've got through the wizard, but I just wanted to make sure I'd read that correctly before continuing. @Nzd: A few points:
  • I suggest that the description should read "Sculpture of Laurie Cunningham by Graham Ibbeson, Coronation Gardens, Leyton, London". The copyright and photographer information do not need to be repeated as they are covered elsewhere on the page.
  • You should also include the "{{Not-free-US-FOP}}" tag as well as the UK FoP tag - since the Commons servers are located in the US, all Wikimedia Commons images must be free of US copyright restrictions as well as, in this case, UK copyright restrictions.
Otherwise fine. Martinvl (talk) 20:13, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
@Martinvl: Thank you (and apologies for taking so long to get back here). I have followed this advice and updated the desc and added the other tag. Cheers, Nzd (talk) 02:08, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

  • Looking at File:Покрышев Пётр Афанасьевич.jpg:
    • The indicated date of 2 February 2006 is absurd and irrelevant.
    • The indicated source, "Wings of the Motherland Magazine, January 1974 p. 4", implies strongly that this would be copyrighted by that magazine (or its heirs).
    • There doesn't seem to be any claim of a license or a justification for why it would be public domain.
    • Looking below, I see you are the uploader! So, if you don't know on what basis it would qualify to be hosted on Commons, how would someone else know? - Jmabel ! talk 22:53, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

- Date is from the image metadata, what's wrong with it? Should I reclaim another date?

- Portrait was originally uploaded on the Russian Wikipedia, by Mikhail Fetisov on 17. November 2013, see Russian Wiki Commons for the file upload.

- The Russian license state that it can be used under fair use and only for the portrayed person in question.

- Yes, I'm the uploader. The Russian file, even thought in the Wiki database, is not recognised by the English Wikipedia, see: diff.

Thanks for your reply, maybe someone else can help me. Witchchester (talk) 23:37, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

On the third point, that’s a fatal problem unless you have evidence that the statement on ruWP is ill-founded; see COM:FAIR. Media hosted here must be usable by anyone, for any purpose.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:55, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
If the image was uploaded to the Russian Wikipedia under a fair use licence, then it shouldn't be on Commons. If you want to use the same image on the English Wikipedia (or any other), then you will need to upload the image there and tag it with a similar fair use licence. Commons can only host genuinely free content. Nzd (talk) 00:03, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
And there is no value in reproducing an obviously wrong date from image metadata. Clearly if this image was published in 1974, it can't date from 2006. But in this case it's moot, because pretty clearly it is not in the public domain & does not have a suitable free license for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 04:50, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
Okay, thanks to you both... One more question. If I find another portrait on google-picture-search, what date should I claim? Metadata or the current date of the upload? Witchchester (talk) 18:12, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
Neither. Date should be the date of what is depicted. In this case {{other date|before|1974}} would be safe, and you might be able to narrow it down further (I didn't look into the biographical stuff). But in general, stuff you stumble across with a Google search isn't typically going to be public domain or free-licensed, it helps a lot more to look in repositories where we know content from that repository is likely to be OK to use, or where there is a fair chance of convincing a rights-holder to provide an appropriate free license. - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
Alright, thanks a lot for your insights! I have removed the image from the article, and try to find one with an appropriate license here on Commons. Witchchester (talk) 16:51, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
@Witchchester: You still could copy the file to enwiki under fair use conditions. But you have to add correct attributions. For the date: Given he died 1967 the photo has to be shot before. Judging from the enwiki article and rank insignia (for a polkovnik which is two ranks above a major, cf. Military ranks, special ranks and class rates in Russia) the image was shot after 1943 – and not surprisingly this is also indicated on the Russian file description. So the creation period can be narrowed to after 1943 until early 1967. — Speravir – 22:11, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Pakistan Colors(beauté)

I chose this particular image of mine as my top shot for the entire year because through this particular image I was able to capture the feel (sounds, smells and general chaos) of this particular area deep in Pakistan's downtown area. This alleyway is a microcosmic representation of the day to day hustle bustle one experiences in Pakistan where multiple parallel worlds coexist with one another simultaneously. The light coming from a skylight in the alley adds an extra amount of oomph to my picture. I have never seen things so silent. It felt like a storm had passed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shah dear (talk • contribs) 02:15, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Failure to upload audio file

I have an audio file from an interview by The BBC. I want to upload it under Fair Use/promotional material (the interview's intention) because it gives sources to some of the information on its wiki page. I've been trying to upload it but I haven't been allowed to. It's in an .MP3 format so it shouldn't be an issue to upload; I've tried to convert it but it still won't allow it. It's 11 minutes long but it's only 14MB. MonkeyStolen234

@MonkeyStolen234: Commons does not accept material under "fair use" terms. It only hosts material that's free for all uses. See Commons:Fair use for details. There is probably also a problem that uploads in MP3 format are currently limited to keep copyright violations under control. If you want to be able to upload MP3s you need to ask for the "Extended uploader" right at Commons:Requests for rights. If you want to use the file on a Wikipedia, it may be that you can upload it locally there instead. --bjh21 (talk) 22:49, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Wrong upload

I accidentally uploaded an entire publication with additional texts, I want to cut out the part written about Category:Chinese numismatic charms and delete the older revision as it contains too many authors of which I am not certain when they died. Should I nominate this file 📁 entirely for deletion, should I upload a newer version, or could I simply use a tool to extract the pages I need? (the source pages are here and here). --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:35, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

Update: I uploaded a new version where the other articles about other subjects (e.g. The supposed mental inferiority of women) are removed, however the first two pages are still in, I have no idea 💡 how to extract them, also could an administrator please hide the first version of the file 📁? as it might be copyrighted. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 08:18, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

@Donald Trung: COM:REVDEL. What do you mean when you say "the first two pages"? If you mean the BNF Gallica pages, I would just them call them DM and leave them. If you mean the introduction from Professeur R. Blanchard we'll have to take a look. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 08:48, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: okay, I can remove pages if you need that. (just looked up how) Just tell me what pages exactly need to be removed. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 09:11, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: if the Gallica pages are in fact not copyrighted they could (and in my opinion should) not be deleted as I believe in proper attribution, however I am not sure when all the authors of all the other papers died so some of the other articles could still be protected by French copyright laws. If the first two pages (modern notes) aren't protected by copyright © then this is ✓ Done, however the rest of the articles are all by various authors. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 09:28, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
The Gallica pages may be copyrighted (didn't look into that) but nobody really cares. The notes seem to be some generic disclaimer. You can add {{De minimis}} for that. For this particular upload I removed them. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 09:39, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

Uploading a photo on a German Wiki Webpage

Hello, I must be a stupid old dinosaur because everything I do doesn't work on Wiki. I live near Munich and I often jog though the palace park in Oberschleißheim. I recently saw a memorial to the WWI Royal Bavarian Flying Corps, so I took a picture of it. I then discovered a German Wikipage about this flying corps. I wanted to upload my picture into their article, but it refuses. It says things about a 'damaged file' or it 'may not comply with WikiCommons'. What the hell am I doing wrong? If it's so complicated, can somebody else upload and place the phot in the German article for me? I'm frustrated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KPH Bay (talk • contribs) 11:00, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

I've found that somebody has a bad habit of editing files. Every time when I edit his photos, and he will correct my mistake. In fact, the description in the photo does not show what he said. I think, he has the responsibility to handle( to solve ) photo problems occurring before the editorial disputes. I've talked to him several times, but every time he had reason to explain it. That was until it happened again and again, I noticed that he does not want to solve the problem and think it is not his problem. This happened recently: [3] When it comes to editorial disputes such as this, what are your suggestions?--Kai3952 (talk) 08:17, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

@Kai3952 and 玄史生: It seems you have difficulties working together. Why don't you keep away from each other files for some time? Regards, Yann (talk) 08:50, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
@Yann:
  • Kai3952: Since this is not the first and the only issue between 玄史生 and you, the content dispute is, in my opinion, beside the point at this stage. I understand that you both speak fluently Chinese, so it is not a language issue either. So again, I suggest that you keep away from 玄史生's files since you are not able to find an agreement. Regards, Yann (talk) 12:22, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
  • I know, but this is not the solution to the editorial disputes. I may accidentally edit his photo since nobody cares who uploaded photos. Is there any better solution?--Kai3952 (talk) 12:35, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
I realize after talking to him on his talk page that he has a problem with the "editorial cognition." For example: He told me here: "外觀無事但內部結構嚴重受創。" What he meant was that the interior of the building is damaged by the earthquake. The problem is that the photo did not shows the damaged part. He explained that The original building has been demolished, and now we see the new building. In the case, I think that should not add "Category:Buildings damaged by the Chichi earthquake," but he doesn't think so. What are your suggestions?--Kai3952 (talk) 13:07, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

What is the difference between "Corner views" and "Corner buildings"?

What is the difference between "Corner views" and "Corner buildings"?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:04, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

Not a category I've used much, but if you look at Saddle Inn, Dale Street I'd say it's a corner building because it's at the junction of two streets, but The Saddle, Dale Street 2018-1.jpg isn't a corner view, but The Saddle, Dale Street 2018-2.jpg is. Rodhullandemu (talk) 16:17, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
Just like you see in this photo(File:The Saddle, Dale Street 2018-2.jpg), it shows a corner building. My question is: What is the difference between "Corner views" and "Corner buildings"?--Kai3952 (talk) 18:23, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
If this were the only file of The Saddle, it would be both a corner view (as a view of the corner of a building) and a corner building (since the Saddle is at the junction of Hackins Hey and Dale Street. However, the building has its own category in which it is categorised as a corner building, and that category is deemed to be inherited by all images in the category (except for images not of the building, but at the building- that's because we overload categories to say (1) this is the building or (2) this is a thing at or in the building). The Saddle, Dale Street 2018-1.jpg isn't a corner view because it's a view of the elevation on Dale Street. Rodhullandemu (talk) 18:34, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
Well..."Corner buildings" can be interpreted as "the corner view of a building"?--Kai3952 (talk) 20:05, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
I wouldn't think so. "Corner buildings" to me means a building on a corner. I see most images in that category are also what I would call corner views, but that is a sensible way of photographing such buildings to get them all in. But the examples of The Saddle above show that it is possible to have a view of a corner building that is not a corner view,m i.e. an elevation. Rodhullandemu (talk) 20:20, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
A category for a building that is on a corner can have Category:Corner buildings for a parent category, but obviously it is not a view of any sort. Conversely, a corner need not have a building on it, so a view of (for example) a corner of a town square might belong in Category:Corner views, but is not a building of any sort. - Jmabel ! talk 22:38, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
@Rodhullandemu: Do you mean to say that if the building is on a corner, but the photo does not show a corner view, then it can not be called "Corner buildings"? Elsewhere I found some examples:
  1. File:Taoyuan Nankan Library.jpg
  2. File:桃園市政府警察局中壢分局.jpg
  3. File:中壢 新竹客運南站 - panoramio.jpg
  4. File:Chungyuet Timeless Landmark.jpg
  5. File:2010 07 10640 4679 Taoyuan City.JPG
  6. File:桃園市 復興路街景 Taoyuan City - panoramio.jpg--Kai3952 (talk) 08:00, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

No, no, you have to distinguish between the location of the building (Category:Corner buildings) and how it is being seen (Category:Corner views), and of course a corner view need not be of a building at all. But since we don't have Category:Corner views, I see little point in creating it, because that implies we should also have Category:Front elevations, Category:Rear elevations and Category:Side elevations. Rodhullandemu (talk) 08:43, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

How it is being seen? I'm not sure what you mean. What I feel is difficult is: Not every photo is like "File:The Saddle, Dale Street 2018-2.jpg" to show that it is a corner building. Even if they(as seen above, 1.~6.) are all on a corner, how do I know if your understanding of "Corner buildings" is the same as mine?--Kai3952 (talk) 12:35, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

re a page a created and tried to upload photos, it is an article I wrote for the Mail On sunday, the pictures were my family ones

I have had quite a day probably because I am new and ignorant. I have tried to enhance my fathers page Terence Hogan with pictures, the article was created years ago. I must have been very stupid and naive. The pics were deleted and blocked and even vandalism was mentioned. The pics I tried to upload were from the article that I wrote and have the copyright http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-1385616/A-womans-shocking-discovery-father.html, I was so in the dark re pictures I did not understand what I could not uploaded believing as every one had passed on in my family and that I do have copyright of the article that the pics are mine. I wanted this article to have a main theme that crime does not pay and that was all, but someone made a jibe at my job (I work normally in the health side, I have nothing to do with politics or news and the comment was harsh). Someone was kind enough to unblock me. The main thrust of the article was changed but by someone very sweet. I don't know where I stand no with re uploading the photos in the article that I have copyright of. Is there anyone prepared to help me with this complex situation kareenza02:16, 13 May 2018 (UTC)~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kareenza (talk • contribs) 02:16, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

  • Copyright normally would belong initially to the photographer and, in the case of newspaper pictures, would be contractually passed on to the newspaper. There is almost no scenario in which the copyright would pass to the subject of a newspaper photo or his heirs. - Jmabel ! talk 02:59, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
  • @Kareenza: I re-read this. I hadn't noticed your heading, which you didn't restate in the body. If you provided the pictures to the Daily Mail, then the situation is different than if they took them. If you are, indeed, the inheritor of the relevant copyrights, then you can go through the COM:OTRS process and send email (as described there) to clarify the matter. If the Daily Mail gave appropriate photo credits when they ran the photos, this should be easy to sort out (though probably not quick: OTRS has a backlog). If they didn't, then we will probably need email from the paper as well. - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
  • I followed the link. It looks like the Daily Mail doesn't credit you for the photos (how did you let that happen?). Either you need to get a belated online "courtesy of" credit from them, or OTRS will need email from them as well. - Jmabel ! talk 16:10, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

Copyright issue with cover of my book

Hi,

My name is Brendan Munnelly.

I wrote a book.

And I created a cover for it myself.

On my own laptop. Using software I purchased and with my own skills.

The book is called Hamlet Model Essays for Students."

Its ISBN is 1980540519.

I created an entry for the book on WikiData here:

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q52958853

I uploaded an image of the book's cover here under Creative Commons licence:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hamlet-Model-Essays-for-Students-Brendan-Munnelly.jpg

But one of your editors has deleted it - claiming it is a "copyright violation."

What?

To repeat: I own the copyright for both the book and cover.

And I have released the cover under the Creative Commons licence.

I have re-uploaded the cover image.

Please do not delete it.

Kind regards,

Brendan Munnelly — Preceding unsigned comment added by BrendanMun (talk • contribs) 14:16, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

  • Because of prior publication, you need to go through OTRS. The only other alternative I see is if you have a website for the book and can clearly indicate there that the cover is released under the CC license. Otherwise, we have no way to know you (the author) are the same person who is uploading. And please to not upload something after it has been deleted. You can go through Commons:Undeletion requests (no point in this case because I'm telling you here what they will tell you there), but re-uploading the same content after it was deleted is the sort of thing that is likely to get you blocked. - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:06, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
@PeterMahfouz: You seem to have done it with File:SamyGemayel.jpg, but you need to have the photographer send permission via OTRS. Next time, please have the permission sent first.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:06, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
Virtually always, a picture on someone's Twitter profile will be under copyright, typically copyrighted by the photographer. Unless it is already published by the copyright-holder under an appropriate free license or you can get the copyright-holder to grant such a license (see COM:OTRS) it should not be uploaded to Commons, and will be deleted if uploaded. - Jmabel ! talk 00:28, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

I have made a typo error in describing how a Commons file should be known on Wikipedia. How do I correct the title?

Could you possibly help me?

I have made a typo error in describing how a Commons file should be known on Wikipedia.

The file I uploaded I described as "Union Block, Portland OR built by HJenry W. Corbett & Henry Failing.jpeg"

HJenry should have read Henry.

That file should have read "Union Block, Portland OR built by Henry W. Corbett and Henry Failing.jpeg"

Could you assist me to correct this?

I uploaded it to the Henry W. Corbett Wikipedia page before noticing error and do not know how to edit it?

Edit a DjVu file

Hi, Is there a faster way to rearrange the pages of a DjVu file. I have uploaded a DjVu file but its pages are not ordered correctly. Every tow images should switch their places. (page 1 remains as it is) and exchange 2 and 3, 4 and 5, 6 and 7, and so on. Thanks--Mohamed.sa (talk) 10:37, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Can a photograph of the frontispiece and title page of a rare old book published in an academic paper be uploaded to the Commons?

A higher resolution version of the Commons image can be extracted from the PDF of the paper https://academic.oup.com/ahr/article/111/4/961/30753 . Can it be uploaded to the Commons (as a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional artwork in the public domain)? The Commons image itself was taken from the same paper, via a 3rd party website. Typometer (talk) 11:25, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

There's already File:Houghton STC 11943.5 - The Man in the Moone, frontispiece.jpg and other files in Category:The Man in the Moone. --ghouston (talk) 12:00, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
Please answer the question. This is the only image of the 2nd edition. Typometer (talk) 12:48, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
If an original work is clearly public-domain (and two-dimensional), no straightforward reproduction of it is deemed copyrightable under our policies, regardless of any claims to the contrary and of the copyright status of any larger work that includes it. The {{PD-Art}} template shell says basically that it doesn’t matter who made the scan or photo.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:39, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Uploading an improved version of an image

I have improved an image using my computer (cropping and brightness), but the page says I cannot overload that particular image. Why would this be? I am simply improving it. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Panorama_Theater_Converted_into_Evangelical_Church.JPG Thanks. 47.32.168.16 16:49, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

In addition to that, newly registered users cannot overwrite existing files, and in many cases, modified versions should be uploaded under a different name. LX (talk, contribs) 17:54, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

The original version infringes on personal privacy and so I have replaced it with this one. The question now is: I don't know how to delete the original version. What are your suggestions?--Kai3952 (talk) 07:32, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

✓ Done Yann (talk) 07:50, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
@Yann: That is just great! Thank you for your help.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:38, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: you might want to blur out this persons name and birthday as well (in at least three places) for the same reason. Richard 14:47, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Are you OK? I already said that I don't know how to delete the original version. ID number, visa number, and headshot has been blurred out in "File:中國大理38.jpg". Also, maybe you don't know, his user name is taken from his real name: "林高志." Please do not bother me unless it's necessary.--Kai3952 (talk) 15:57, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
It was just an idea, I didn't mean to upset you (or have my head bitten off, for that matter). In the current image, the persons full name, birthdate and document ID are still present – in both Latin and Chinese characters. Sure, the eyes are no longer visible, but I think there's still a lot to be desired in the privacy department. I could blurr out the Latin characters, but since I cannot read Chinese I would probably miss some privacy sensitive data. Truth be told, I'm not so sure where this particular image would be useful. Maybe deleting it altogether would be a valid option. Richard 08:45, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
User:林高志 is taken from his real name. This situation is called as "open to the public." Why do you think this is privacy?--Kai3952 (talk) 10:06, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
I don't know how common his name is, but the combination of name and birthdate is certainly less common (maybe even unique). Also, that he chooses to use his full name to contribute is different from allowing anyone to use a photograph of this kind of papers for any purpose they want. It's a good thing the passport has expired. Even so, it is better to be safe than sorry. Personally, I would never upload a photograph or share information like that, but I guess there are people who do and privacy is not perceived in the same way by all people all around the world. Do you have any idea on when this image would be useful for use in one of the Wikimedia projects? It's not used anywhere now and I would not know in which case it would be useful. Richard 14:47, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
I've done what you said. See: [8]. You asked me that, do you have any idea on when this image would be useful for use in one of the Wikimedia projects? I think, the reason for this is because you are "not familiar" with Chinese characters(it means "Traditional Chinese" and "Simplified Chinese"). Otherwise, you should know that this picture can be used in these articles: en:Departure card, en:Travel visa, en:Visa policy of China, zh:出境卡, zh:簽證, and zh:中华人民共和国签证政策. I suggest you learn Chinese characters because I don't want to spend time to solve "your problem."--Kai3952 (talk) 11:15, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. I took the liberty of wiping the MRZ as well, since all relevant data is there as well. I do not have to read Chinese to understand what types of document these are. In the articles you link to, you can see that most images used therein do not show both full name and date of birth. The images used also focus on one type of document at the time, which makes them easier to use. In an article on a specific kind of flower, I would prefer to use an image of that flower and not one of a bouquet. But that's my opinion (not my problem) and I sense you feel I'm nagging and this entire conversation is a waste of time, so I won't bother you anymore (not that bothering you was ever my intention). Richard 12:32, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
Until now, you still said so much to me. Oh...I know your intention. You want me to delete it, then you will stop arguing and bother me. Although I don't know why you are so "unreasonable", and I've help you submit it to delete. See: Commons:Deletion requests/File:中國大理38.jpg.--Kai3952 (talk) 16:48, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Breakfast shop? Breakfast restaurant?

As seen above, they are selling breakfast in Taiwan. What I want to know is: Should it be called "Breakfast shop" or "Breakfast restaurant"? What category does it fit in?--Kai3952 (talk) 11:30, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

We don't have either of those categories and probably don't need them unless we have more than a few examples. If food is served to be eaten on the premises, it's a restaurant, otherwise it's a shop. Rodhullandemu (talk) 11:44, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
Do we not have more than a few examples? IHOP and Denny's, which sell breakfast food, are massive chains in the US, and I can think of three local restaurants that close by 3 PM. I'm sure we could collect a few hundred photos from Flikr without much problem, and may have that many already on Commons.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:12, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
I certainly can think of several others I know, though I'm not sure which we have photos of on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 05:16, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
As far as I know, the breakfast is highly commercialized in Taiwan, and especially their "breakfast shops" and "breakfast restaurants", which reflects that local sociocultural and economic development. The problem is: What category does it fit in?--Kai3952 (talk) 12:57, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Firefox problem

I would like to access Commons in Firefox, but I can only see the text label, not the image itself. The problem is specific to Commons in Firefox. I can see Commons images in other browsers, and I can see images in Wikipedia articles in Firefox. Can anyone advise? Dudley Miles (talk) 20:40, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

@Dudley Miles: Firefox works for me, although sometimes the images in a category don't load properly. I assume it's a server problem rather than a Firefox problem, and refreshing usually fixes it. --ghouston (talk) 07:25, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. However, I have tried refreshing, and also clearing cookies and cache, and I still have the problem. It may be a setting on my computer, but I cannot find what it is. Dudley Miles (talk) 09:24, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
You could try Firefox safe mode [9]. --ghouston (talk) 10:09, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I have tried safe mode and re-installing Firefox and I still have the problem. I will just have to carry on using Internet Explorer for the present. Aabrahamsen2018: Your images were probably inverted or of a different rotation in the first place. Besides tagging images for rotation, you can rotate images yourself using the CropTool, as I have done for the other two images you listed, but it can also be used to crop images. The CropTool can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. When cropping existing commons images it saves a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. When you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. Logo & TOO

Hi, Is this logo below the threshold of originality required for copyright protection ?, My instinct says it is but I wasn't sure if the "N" could be a copyrightable thing >, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:46, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

If it were from the USA I‘d say definitely: the first N is only trivially modified from the letterform in the typeface. But the British TOO is much lower; I believe even simple typography can be eligible for copyright there, so I would guess not.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:43, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

SVG text shifted after upload

Hello,

I have made an SVG file and uploaded it here. After a while I noticed that the text at the left of the SVG is shifted as seen here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RGB_LED_Spectrum.svg

The numbers on the y-axis touch the axis, while in the original file on my PC they don't. I don't know what is going wrong here. Even after trying to increase the canvas size, nothing changed... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cpu20 (talk • contribs) 06:40, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

@Cpu20: Hi. As far as I can tell the problem was, that the SVG's viewbox was too small. Even after "trying to increase the canvas size", the viewbox size was only 187.90681 by 135.78694, so the individual characters were positioned as if the image was super tiny, which made them look all messed up after scaling the image to full size. I uploaded a fixed version. TilmannR (talk) 10:14, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Why "Laundries" is not a shop?

I recently created "Laundries in Taiwan" category, but what I want to ask is: Why "Laundries" is not a shop?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:12, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Because laundries aren't always places where you do the action of shopping (that is, buying things). Some laundries belong to a business for only their use, such as prison laundries. Category:Laundromats could probably be categorized under shops. --Auntof6 (talk) 16:43, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
Do you mean to say that it is a "place" for laundry?--Kai3952 (talk) 17:02, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
Yes. The noun "laundry" can mean either things that are being laundered or a place where laundering is done. Only the latter can be plural. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:51, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
I have amended Chinese translation to reflect that "laundries" means a place for laundry. The purpose for doing so is to avoid being misled by "洗衣店." See: [10]--Kai3952 (talk) 19:29, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

I see other companies have their logos up, yet why am I not allowed to upload mine?. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monbert (talk • contribs) 18:00, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

If you're referring to File:Scinece-source-logo-400.png, that would actually be ineligible for copyright protection, as it consists only of text (see Commons:Threshold of originality). Many such logos are on Wikimedia Commons and they are tagged with the {{PD-textlogo}} template, usually accompanied by {{Trademarked}}, since trademark protection can still apply even if copyright doesn't. clpo13(talk) 18:21, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
Any logo on Commons should either be ineligible for copyright protection, so old that it has lost copyright, or free-licensed by the copyright holder. (This statement does not necessarily apply to other sites, not even all WMF sites. E.g. the English-language Wikipedia makes some allowances for non-free logos.) If you see something that violates that, please nominate it for deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 18:31, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

Estonian painter

Hi! I would need advice, please. So there is a wiki site about me and I want my works to be visible there. I have photos of my paintings + other photographs, that are all my original works. I uploaded them, attatched some license to them, but they get removed ("copyright violation")... What am I doing wrong? For example Abstraktne_8.jpg was removed, because the user Jcb deleted it from Commons. Reason: Copyright violation; see Commons:Licensing -.) Please advise the steps on how to do it right, that my original photos would not get removed/deleted all the time. Thanks in advance! I meet CC publishing criteria, why has my file has been marked for copyright violation?

Hi there!

I'd like to understand if I can publish this file on wikipedia under CC license?

I'll gladly follow policy, if I can just get some clarity please!

The reason I think I can publish this file is because, I have permission from Noise Pop Festival who commissioned these photographs (Noise Pop Photo Store) from Brandon Gong to publish these so long as Brandon Gong has been credited, which he has been on this file, linked right to his website. That meets the exception criteria referenced here: [Tutorial] Teagleman (talk) 05:34, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

Does the subtitle of the video effect the video quality?

I create subtitles by clicking the [CC] button and then "Add subtitles" button. Can this degrade the Video quality?--고려 (talk) 23:06, 18 May 2018 (UTC)

@고려: No.
(if you want the long boring answer just ask) - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:38, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: If you don't mind, can you tell me why?--고려 (talk) 01:40, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
@고려: Without going into too much detail, the subtitles are saved as a seperate file. (and can be embedded as a seperate segment in the video file, but I don't know if Commons does that) When you play the video, the subtitles are over laid over it by your computer/phone/mediaplayer. The stored image has no subtitles in it. You can compare it to subtitles on a DVD: the video quality does not get worse when you turn the subtitles on. If subtitles are burned into the image (like they are in Rapsodia Satanica which was not subtitled by Commons) they do degrade the video, but Commons doesn't do that. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 02:22, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

SVG with switch elements doesn’t render properly: File:CollapsedtreeLabels-simplified.svg

I’ve just added switch elements and German labels to the source code of this SVG file. However, after upload it doesn’t render the German version when ‘de’ is selected in the pulldown menu below the image. The same applies when implemented in Wikipedia articles such as here. In browser view (after clicking on the ‘original file’ link) it shows the German text (since German is my browser’s default system language), and, of course, it has worked in browser view locally on my computer when tested before upload. What is wrong? --Gretarsson (talk) 15:03, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

You can possibly find some clues in m:Grants:Project/Glrx/SVG_i18n#What_is_your_solution_to_this_problem?. Ruslik (talk) 20:26, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
OK, after changing the structure of the source code and adding additional text elements with systemLanguage="en" attribute as both is suggested here, it works! Issue resolved. --Gretarsson (talk) 19:48, 25 May 2018 (UTC)
Addendum: Further testing revealed that the additional text elements with systemLanguage="en" attribute were crucial for making it work. Consequently, switch elements also work when bracketing whole ‘text blocks’ for each language, i.e. text elements which bracket several tspan elements... --Gretarsson (talk) 20:17, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi my name is Robert Dölle. Someone uploaded a picture to my Wikipedia entry https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_D%C3%B6lle without my permission and I wanted it to be deleted. I‘ve tried to do that but unfortunately without succesa. What can I do to see it gone? I wasn’t asked for permission by the photographer. Please help me. I’m an actor and I think the picture is hurting my internet presence. Thank you. Robert Dölle (talk) 22:43, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

  • The presence in that particular article is, of course, the concern of the German-language Wikipedia, not of Commons. However, the photo is on Commons: File:Robert Dölle 2013 Cologne.jpg. It looks from the microphone like you were making a public appearance. I don't know German law on personality rights in those circumstances, but in most countries people are allowed to publish pictures of someone making a public appearance without asking for explicit permission. There is an explicit personality rights warning at File:Robert Dölle 2013 Cologne.jpg. Is there some specific legal right you believe has been violated, or are you asking for a courtesy here? As an actor, I doubt you are in the position to say that as a courtesy you do not want to be depicted at all, but in all probability if you can provide a substitute picture that is either in the public domain or appropriately free-licensed I presume everyone would be willing to go with the picture you'd prefer. - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 10 May 2018 (UTC)
  • @Robert Dölle: like Jmabel, I strongly recommend you to take a good picture of yourself (or otherwise make sure sure you own the copyright, so no movie screenshots) and upload it here. If you leave me a message on my talk page I will personally make sure File:Robert Dölle 2013 Cologne.jpg becomes an unused picture. Because you are a public figure, you should also send permission for your photo to OTRS: contact OTRS. - Alexis Jazz 02:13, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

Show Preview not working for vector images generated from asymptote code.

I am making my first try to edit a vector image, and I am not succeeding.

For example, if I try to edit a vector image like this one... ,

it is easy to see the asymptote code the created the image...

// Function.
real f(real x) {return x ** 2; }
draw(graph(f,-2.45,2.45),red+2);

But when I make changes and click "Show Preview", The new asymptote code is not reflected in the png picture.

Why not?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JdAtAm (talk • contribs) 16:27, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

The code was used by the uploader to generate this svg image. It is shown here only for information. Changing it will not lead to any changes in the image. Ruslik (talk) 21:00, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

Do you think "this" is a bridge?--Kai3952 (talk) 09:53, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

It looks rather like the end of a levee. Some might call it a type of dam, and there seems to be a system of flood gates in it. It acts like a bridge in the sense that one can walk, ride or drive across the waterway which is controls. I'm neither enough of an engineer nor philosopher to say whether that makes it a bridge. Added some coordinates to the file description, though. LX (talk, contribs) 11:41, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

Upload of painting

Hi,

I would like to upload a painting by Sir Oswald Brierly (1817-1897) called “South Sea whalers boiling blubber” (c1876). It is held by the Dixon galleries, State Library of New South Wales. The information page that hosts the image online says it is out of copyright. [[11]] Does that make it ok for uploading to Wikipedia Commons? (Histragic (talk) 07:22, 20 May 2018 (UTC))

The author died more than 100 years ago. The painting is in public domain and slavishly copying it does create any new copyright. So, you may upload it. Please, add {{PD-art|{{PD-old-100}}}} to it. Ruslik (talk) 07:46, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion

I uploaded pictures which I took, but almost all files have been listed at 'Commons:Deletion requests.' They have been nominated for deletion. The reason for the nomination is 'Low resolution, no EXIF. Only one file within.'

I think it is because there is no metadata. I took the picture with my smartphone and sent those pictures to my computer through SNS (not USB) and save them. During the process, can the metadata of picture be deleted? How can I resolve this problem? Should I delete the files and upload again the pictures with metadata?

What should I to do? I hope some helps for it.--Yeon So Jeong (talk) 05:58, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

Help with deleting version of files

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:My_House_title_card.png

I messed up trying to add a new version of an image and now there are four version when there should only be two and the "current version" isn't the version I want. Can someone delete the versions "05:49, 27 May 2018" and "05:46, 27 May 2018" leaving only the new current version "05:45, 27 May 2018" and the original version "06:37, 18 May 2018"? Thanks! Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask -- the back end of Wikimedia Commons still confuses me!

Umimmak (talk) 05:58, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

Edit: Actually, to clarify, the current version is the version I want -- something is weird with my browser / cookies / whatever and it didn't "update" the actual images when I saw them but it seems like the current version is the correct one. However, there are still twice as many versions as necessary! Thanks :) Umimmak (talk) 06:30, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
There is no reason to delete past versions unless they are (for example) copyright violations or slanderous. They are still permanently stored (so that admins can see them), so no space is saved by deletion. As long as the right version is current, things are fine. - Jmabel ! talk 17:00, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

Look at "File:新月橋上拍攝新海橋.jpg", the uploader User:Cjackh wrote in the description is: "Crescent Bridge taken from on the Xinhai Bridge." I found that some users from Taiwan have common points, is that "If the uploaders take a picture from the bus(or the car), they will still say that this photo was taken on the bridge." Should I use Category:Views from vehicles or Category:Views from bridges?--Kai3952 (talk) 13:40, 19 May 2018 (UTC)

Well, you could look this picture.File:徐匯中學側門近照.jpg It contains a category about Views from buses in New Taipei. So you could do that like you said. And the picture was photoed totally on the bridge to bridge.--Cjackh (talk) 15:43, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
No, what I need is: "The users from English-speaking countries can answer my questions." I'm concerned your answer may be inaccurate because you are from Taiwan. Many times in the past, I see users from Taiwan of improper understanding of English, to cause unnecessary trouble for me. Therefore, I have always been "skeptical" of the Taiwanese's English ability.--Kai3952 (talk) 22:16, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
There is no contradiction at all between a view being from a vehicle and from a bridge. - Jmabel ! talk 22:41, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: No contradiction? I'd like to be more sure about how you use these two categories. Therefore, do you mean to say that I can add Category:Views from vehicles and Category:Views from bridges to this file "File:新月橋上拍攝新海橋.jpg"?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:30, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
Not knowing the city where this was taken, I have no clue whether it was taken from a vehicle; it certainly appears to be taken from a bridge. If the bridge on which it was shot is vehicles-only, then it must have been taken from a vehicle. If not, really only the photographer could know whether they were in a vehicle or walking. But certainly there is no more contradiction between a photo being taken 'from a vehicle' and 'on a bridge' than between (for example) 'in a building' and 'in Asia'. - Jmabel ! talk 15:12, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
I have browsed a lot of photos from all over Taiwan, and "File:新月橋上拍攝新海橋.jpg" is just an example. This problem often occurs because of the author(photographer) will not pay attention to whether taking pictures from a vehicle. If there is no better way, then I had to choose to add both "Category:Views from vehicles" and "Category:Views from bridges" at the same time.--Kai3952 (talk) 22:26, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

WARNING: CAT-A-LOT IS BROKEN.

Cat-a-lot is broken until further notice. Do not categorize more than 89 files per minute.

If you try to do any more, cat-a-lot will say it succeeded but it really didn't. More than 89 categorizations simply means anything over that will be silently dropped.

If you are not an admin or bureaucrat, everything you categorized over 89 files per minute during the last week has been dropped. Oops. You may want to take another look at everything you thought you had categorized.

I'm sorry I didn't find out sooner. Then again, finding out is in no way my responsibility. VisualFileChange seems to stall and force the user to go get a cup of coffee before it automatically continues. I haven't tested any other tools.

Photographic portrait of Walter S.H. Hamady by Zane Williams—?

Hello, to whom it may concern, I have permission from the photographer Zane Williams to employ his photograph of Walter Hamady onto Hamady’s Wikipedia page as composed by Prof. Roy Behrens. What do you require as means of proof of permission to use the image for this purpose. I can get a letter from the photographer, scan and submit the file if that would suffice, or transfer information by way of email. Please advise. Thank you. —Patrick JB Flynn — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flynstitute (talk • contribs) 20:22, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

  • Given that you are asking here on Commons, I assume you are interested in uploading it here on Commons, not just in Wikipedia. Please see COM:OTRS; by far the best is email from the photographer (but I believe a scan of something in writing from the photographer would do), and in any case we need a specific free license, not just "permission to use in Wikipedia." Generally, I recommend {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, which reserves the right to be credited and requires that all derivative works also be free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 03:14, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Linking an image to a Wikipedia page

I have uploaded an image to Wikipedia Commons. Now I want it to appear embedded in an existing Wikipedia page. How can I do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pruethorner (talk • contribs) 22:06, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

Pruethorner: on the file description page, click the link that says "Use this file" with the Wikipedia logo next to it. It will give you code such as [[File:Example.jpg|thumb|An example file]] (sections are divided by a vertical bar (|); the first section is the file name, the second section specifies that you want to use a thumbnail instead of the full image, and the third section is an optional caption).
Paste this code on the Wikipedia page you want in order to use the image. See en:Help:Pictures for more information. Additionally, you can ask further questions about using Wikipedia specifically at en:Wikipedia:Help desk. clpo13(talk) 22:11, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

Is this the right place to ask for minor touchups to existing images? If so, these two images have a distinct pink tinge to them I'm hoping someone more talented that I can fix. Both have areas that appear to be fresh white that could be used for matching.

Waiting for an image to be added

Hello,

A few weeks ago I uploaded an image with the permission of a photographer friend. She emailed in the requisite permission declaration, but unfortunately the image was still deleted. I asked if she would submit it herself via permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, which she did on May 18. My question is: How will we know when the image has been accepted, and how can I find it?

Many thanks,

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:15, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
@Harshaw61: You can ask Ann Dean to copy you on the email messages, and watch File:The Americans.jpg and File:The Americans band, Lawrence KS 2016-06-24 by Ann Dean.jpg. In all likelyhood, that poster is protected by copyright, which means it cannot be uploaded to Commons. In some Wikipedias, including the English, fair use is accepted – but in such cases, the poster is uploaded locally (that is, in that Wikipedia itself) and in a lower resolution. Not all Wikipedias accept fair use and/or local uploads though, the Spanish being one of them. Richard 11:15, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Grandfather mystery

Trying to find information about Grandfather and his family background to help identify myself. He spoke no English in fact spoke very little ever- in hindsight he may have spoken Polish but not Russian as i now know the sound of it. Family has always said he was Ukrainian but i will never know without further info. Perhaps he was Jewish. I know we always kept x-mas tree longer than usual and was in my 30s before i understood that it was kept for him to recognize Russian x-mas in January which i still do to honor him. He lived upstairs from us in Chicago throughout my childhood. He was exceptionally skilled craftsman but never worked a regular job for lack of proper papers. The only credential i have is a Naturalization application showing that he was born in Dziskow,Poland Feb 26th,1890 under the name Teodor Pawlowicz though changed to Fred Paulis sometime after walking to U.S. from Canada in 1915. I did not know about name change until just recently. He is a complete mystery and it is frustrating as if i were incomplete in some way. Ancestry searches not much help with such little paper trail and no family members i know of to shed light. Please help if you can.

Help with Flickr image

Hi, I would like to ask a Flickr user if they could change the copyright status of this image ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/40993572@N03/37315492911 ) to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA for it to be used on a Wikipedia article, but I do not have a Yahoo account to email them, nor do I want to create one. Is there a way to create a gallery that crops images to square, rather than having to reupload cropped versions of images

Hi all

I'd like to create a gallery of images for a competition I'm working on that has galleries (using <gallery>) but I would very much like the images to be uniformly square. Is there some way to specify the images are cropped if the exceed a certain height or width? I know there are certain templates that are possible to use crop images but I can't find anythign within a gallery. Any examples that I could crib from would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I recently updated {{Multiple images}} (actually Module:Multiple image) with the version from Wikipedia to support a gallery in which all images have the same height, it may not be exactly what you want though. Css cropping is not a great idea and not supported on all wikis. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:12, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: , thanks very much, this isnt what I need but I'm sure I find a use for it at some other time. Very useful to know CSS cropping isn't supported everywhere, I think I may just make cropped versions manually if I chose to go ahead with it. Thanks again. @John Cummings: You want to cut off tops and bottoms of portraits and sides of landscapes on purpose? Why?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:20, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: , because I want all the images in the gallery to be square, the images will be of the natural landscape, so it won't be like I'm chopping the tops of people's heads off :) John Cummings (talk) 15:30, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
@John Cummings: There is no such mode, and I don't know who maintains the <gallery> tool (it's cross-wiki, not specific to Commons. Short of what you are asking for, you might consider the "packed" mode, which I think looks really good. See examples at User:Jmabel/Berlin (which uses a "wide image" followed by three separate packed galleries). - Jmabel ! talk 16:19, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Adding alt text to images

Is there a way to add alt text to an existing image? I have developed alt text for an image and would like to share that with the community. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sraysor (talk • contribs) 13:34, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

  • Could you give a bit more description of what you are trying to do? Specific URLs, an indication of what content you are trying to add, etc. would be helpful. ALT text usually refers to something where an image is displayed; it's something more likely to arise in Wikipedia than in Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

How to request deletion for several files at once

I requested deletion for Commons:Deletion requests/File:KASHMIRARANKAIL01.jpg Then I tacked on seven files by the same user. I think this is probably not the right way of doing this. Is there a list of different namespaces on Commons where Visual Editor is and isn't enabled?

Hi all

I've been working on an easy way for contributors to Wiki Loves competitions to create photo essays, the prototype is here. Unfortunatley I have a technical issue, I'm finding that some namespaces on Commons don't allow Visual Editor (which the process relies on), I'm also finding that for some reason in my userspace for some reason signatures are dissabled in VE. Is there a page somewhere on Commons that documents where VE can be used and why it is a dissabled in some spaces, also bonus points for explaining why I can't add a signature to pages using VE (greyed out).

Thanks very much for your help

John Cummings (talk) 13:22, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Might become standard for it to be available but almost certainly not the default. Because the main things most people here edit are file pages and category pages, it's not generally perceived as very useful here. - Jmabel ! talk 04:15, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

jytdog

Not really sure who or what organization this editor is, but we have adopted a change that we now formally discourage the use of and contributions towards Wikipedia with our university colleages.

We conducted a recent experiment, where one college criticized an edit by Jytdog, and subsequently JyTdog proceeded to edit out this person's work from all of Wikipedia. This appeared retaliatory.

This appears to be censorship disguised as editing.

Because of this we have all adopted a policy to stop donating to wiki, to stop editing wiki, and to stop using wiki. This is an unfortunate development that in our opinion makes wiki problematic as a media to use. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 173.239.199.122 (talk) 15:19, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

Hello One Seven Three Two Three Nine One Nine Nine One Two Two and welcome to the Wikimedia Commons help desk! If you have an actual question related to the Wikimedia Commons media repository, please go ahead and state your question. If you have questions or concerns about Wikipedia, you should probably go to that site instead.
In the future, please log in and sign your comments, so we can have an idea of who "we all" are and (based on your editing history) what on earth you're talking about. No one here is a mind reader. Also, when raising concerns regarding a specific user mentioned by name, it is good form to notify that user, by linking to their user name: User:Jytdog (there is no user named JyTdog). LX (talk, contribs) 15:39, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
Hmmm. The IP does not appear to map to anything that I can find. The purported user does not exist. The reported events do not appear to have actually occurred (assuming I am reading the claims correctly, that a user named JyTdog retaliated against Jytdog). I think we can conclude this is bogus. UserName retrieval without email - Organisation Name

Hi there,

We have a User Name which is the organisation's name, which was setup without an email address associated to it. Because it is the organisation's name, there is a preference to be able to use the original name for future contributions.

Is there anyway to gain access to this account again through proof of the business or similar?

Photos from flickr - North Korea

Hi,

It is not easy to get photos from North Korea under a free license.

So, can someone upload these photos of North Korean military to Commons, please? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 188.110.61.151 (talk) 11:13, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

Some of these are already here per Flinfo, you are welcome to login and upload the rest with COM:F2C (when it comes back up) or using the info at Flinfo, but only if they are CC-BY-2.0 or CC-BY-SA-2.0. You can put them in Category:Military parades in North Korea.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 11:54, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
I know that some of them are still online here. But, Jeff G., I do not have an account here and really have no idea how such a transfer works. To be honest, I have tried it by reading all those WikiCommons-pages but this is too complex for me to understand. Jeff G., can you upload the missing photos from the flickr stream, please? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 188.110.61.151 (talk) 14:19, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 04:52, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

What is the appropriate approach to split the image history?

I am looking at File:Ivanovo Postampt.jpg. I think that the original 2009 upload was actually more useful, since there is a similar perspective already at File:Почтамт.jpg. The thing is that it is a Main Post Office and thus it may very well be educational to have different images of it from different times. I think that all three images should be kept, but what do I do with the former one, where User:Мечников has simply overwritten the image. Can it be split somehow? Do I just go ahead and download one of the copies and reupload it again? Gone Postal (talk) 19:21, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

How to create my category And upload from flickr Public Domain license

  • The public domain mark there, unlike CC-0, is just an assertion that the image is in the public domain. It is not a license. We can accept that only if someone can state why the image is in the public domain. I see no reason to think that is in the public domain, especially because it is obviously a screen grab. - Jmabel ! talk 03:52, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
  • At https://www.flickr.com/photos/148083379@N08/37719807851 on what appears legitimately to be Thita Rangsitpol Manitkul's own Flickr account is a cleaner version of this image (not a screen grab) with a similar assertion of it being public domain, but also without any indication of why it would be. - Jmabel ! talk 03:57, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Is it possible to reinstate the Category:Mohammed Ghani Hikmat

The category, Category:Mohammed Ghani Hikmat was deleted some time in the past, I believe because it was empty.

In fact, the sculptor, who was a very eminent Iraqi artist, was responsible for designing and building a numer of high profile public monumental works. Actually Commons already had many images of his works in Wiki Commons., but these were uploaded in Arabic, so if anyone searched for them in English, they could not be found. A few other images were uploaded as tourist photos and lacked sufficient information to identify the name of the monument or statue. I have recently expanded the article on this artist, and spent a lot of time searching for his works in Arabic, etc and have now populated the category with some 25 images, and hope to be able to add a few more over the next week or so.

For interest, the artist's details are

  • Mohammad Ghani Hikmat
  • Born: April 20, 1929 Kadhimiya, Baghdad, Iraq
  • Died: September 12, 2011 Amman, Jordan
  • Nationality: Iraqi
  • Resided; Baghdad, Iraq; Amman. Jordan

Thank-you for your time and attention. BronHiggs (talk) 08:20, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

@BronHiggs: I recreated it with the deletion summary.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 08:34, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks, that's great. These images were really difficult to find because I don't read Arabic much at all (although I have a basic familiarity with the alphabet). It took me several days of searching on the Internet first for the Arabic titles of these artworks, and then in Wiki Commons for the same items. Finally, I compared each item with figures in texts to ensure that they were labelled correctly (and found at least two images that had been misidentified on Commons).
To save future editors from having to go through this arduous process, I have been adding the English titles of these sculptures, along with the name(s) of the artists, the location of the work and brief descriptions of the work (including specs such as height, materials, date completed etc). This info has been added to the discussion page for any work that is in Arabic, or any work that has been incorrectly titled in the file name. At the same time, I have been adding more relevant categories to each work, so that they will be easier to find in the future. BronHiggs (talk) 22:28, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
