First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Request reason: "The file is free. It has been made available to all media sources whom wish to use it and is on display on the owner's webpage. I waited out my last block so I could come and correct the mistake I had previously made; giving this image a Creative Commons license when it did not have one. I did my research on licensing, I talked offline to people who had had experience editing on Wiki, and I stated that I had pulled this from offline. Yes, I agreed to deletion if it was found to be violating procedures, and yes I was honest about it. I uploaded an image that genuinely fit the criterion. So why did it get deleted? Because Wikipedia admin do everything that they must to provide a well-intended, organized encyclopedia of articles and literature for the public to see. I know it takes alot of pressure to keep it that way. Unfortunately, you can't knock people out of the park like that. You said my last block was not a punishment; I understood that perspective and I waited until later to correct a major mistake. But again? Threshold crossed. Oh you sir are free to believe in your own reasoning and morals, and even if you strike me down for the sake of it, nothing is going hide the sheer absurdity and self-righteousness that you the enforcer have expressed and committed this time around. I will fight this block and I will submit images until the licensing can become acceptable, and I will use that to help myself for future times around. In the meantime, as long as this ban is in place, I will continue editing, without photos, and I can do a rather good job of it. In this case, I don't much regret speaking up again, regardless of what comes with it. Good day to you, sir or ma'am, do consider."

Any member of the media is allowed to access this and the images are automatically uploaded for free, unconditional usage.
