Erigeron compositus not a dupe

Hi Common Good, I noticed this dupe edit. I do not agree the two images are exactly identical or that one is a scaled down version of the other. Both images have the same resolution but quite different file sizes. One is an edit of the other, where it has been sharpened and color curve adjusted. So, one looks natural, and a little dull, and then there is the more eye-catching, bright and enhanced version. I believe both are relevant. I have taken the liberty to undo your edit. If you do not agree with my reasoning, do contact me, and lets discuss it further. Cheers, -- Slaunger 21:13, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Common Good,
Ooops, I was a little too hasty there. You were absolutely correct in adding the dupe tag. I have now "undone my undo", so the dupe tag is back. And thank you for doing these cleanup activities. It is not the most rewarding job, but I would like to say that I appreciate it. Cheers, -- Slaunger 21:46, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Understand Japanse?

Hi. I get a feeling that you may be someone who understands Japanse. If so, would you mind helping out with suggesting renames for media that only have a Japanese description on Category:Media renaming requests. The format we need is {{rename|new name.ext}}. The first 100 or so images need some native speaker assistance... Thank you. Cheers! Siebrand 20:50, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

No, I don't understand Japanese. Maybe one of the Japanese admins can find a Japanese user who is willing to tag those files?

Dupes tagging

Hi. Please check out User:OsamaK/dupes and remember to remove the pairs you tagged from the pages... Happy tagging, thank you for the help. Siebrand 21:11, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

dupe

This barnstar is an exact duplicate or scaled-down version of: Image:Original Barnstar.png There should be only one copy of an image (except this one).
After getting rid of all the other dupes, you and the other helpers have been speedily awarded.

Commons is virtually duplicates free - Thanks for your efforts! Finn Rindahl (talk) 23:42, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

...and you have been added as trusted user for mediamoves: Commons:MediaMoveBot/CheckPage. Would you mind adding a dot (or preferrably something more informative) to your user page - you seem sort of not-excisting when your user name gives a red link ;o) (That's a question and not a requirement, but you probably understood that). Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 14:10, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

Dupe

If u uploade things from the German Wikipedia to the Commons please check first if there isn't a dupe in Commons (the upload tool even helps u) Thx.--Sanandros (talk) 20:58, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Which file are you refering to? --Common Good (talk) 19:12, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Please, don't delete the image Blason de la ville d'EygalièresMaussane-les-Alpilles (13).svg also if it is an exact duplicate of Blason de la ville de Maussane-les-Alpilles (13).svg. For heraldry interested users an image is never duplicate of another if the name of the owner is different. In this case deletion of image Blason de la ville d'EygalièresMaussane-les-Alpilles (13).svg could cause impossibility to find the blazon of city Eygalières (no one khows that it has the same image blazon of Maussane-les-Alpilles). Thanks Massimop (talk) 20:04, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

In effect, in this case the image should be a wrong upload (there is another blazon of Eygalières in Blason de la ville d'Eygalières (13).svg), but the logical procedure is always correct. Bye Massimop (talk) 20:13, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
So we can delete it as a dupe. But if two cities are using the same coat of arms then we could use one file and simply add a notice to this image stating: "this coat of arms was also used by ..." -- Common Good (talk) 20:25, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

@Common Good: Please delete it https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Taman_Nasional_Bukit_12.jpg and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kantor_Bupati_Sarolangun.jpg Cek Indra (bicara) 15 Desember 2020 07.42 (UTC)

Rename Freemantle to Fremantle in two images

Regarding Image:Melbourne in Freemantle overhead 1980.jpg and Image:Melbourne in Freemantle 1980.jpg, I notice you have tagged these to allow the images to be renamed with the correct spelling for Fremantle. Thank you for your assistance. Nick Thorne (talk) 14:10, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Quite right you are. Thanks. --BrokenSphere 21:41, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Could you please explain more fully...

You place a tag that states it should only be used for exact duplicates on an image that was not an exact duplicate.

Could you please explain this action? Geo Swan (talk) 20:20, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Mmh, with a closer look at the image ... the larger image is missing a small part at the top. So indeed it is not an exact dupe. I still think the smaller could be replaced by the larger image, but however, if you would like to we can keep the samller one. -- Common Good (talk) 20:38, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Duplicate template

Hi. Please do not add the 'file:' prefix when using dupe, duplicate or badname templates. It may confuse commonsdelinker. Just the file name will do. Thanks and best wishes for 2009. Lycaon (talk) 22:30, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

File:800px-Ukmo-exeter-panorama.jpg

Hi,

I am the one that imported File:800px-Ukmo-exeter-panorama.jpg from English Wikipedia. I was not aware at the time that it was of lower quality. It was used in one of my article in French but I have change it to "Ukmo-exeter-panorama.jpg". Consequently, I don't see any problem to delete File:800px-Ukmo-exeter-panorama.jpg. Pierre cb (talk) 10:16, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

File:Rolleiflex-6008-rr-800.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

No duplication

Why did you restore this duplication template? As I have told, there is no file where you say. You should check what you are doing: perhaps you intended to notice or request something else, or you didn't write the correct name of the file you consider duplicated. But, as it is now, the only thing to do is to remove the template: under no circumstances would anyone delete a file for being a "duplicate" of a file that does not exist. Belgrano (talk) 19:26, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

I see. The problem is that you must include the "File:" prefix when linking the duplicate. Otherwise, it's not linked and appears as a red link. Belgrano (talk) 19:46, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Just to be clear, that is a requirement of the Dupes tool, not of the tagging proces. TheDJ (talk) 23:24, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Be careful with low res dupes.

Just like to point you at this. A higher resolution image was accidently deleted because you tagged the "lowres". Watch out when tagging non-exact images. And in my personal opinion, when there is an exact dupe (as indicated by "The following file is a duplicate of this file" at the bottom), unless the older version has a non-descriptive name, please delete the newer upload. It preserves the contributions of original users more clearly, and it saves the CommonsDelinker bot a lot of work (work that is subject to problematic failures at times). Also note that small differences in the thumbnails are possible, even when the fullsize images are exact duplicates. The thumbnailing software has changes sometimes which can cause something like that. TheDJ (talk) 23:34, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

I do not think I have tagged the wrong file.
I tagged ([1]) the smaller image File:Atlas Agena launches GATV 11 satellite.jpg (1,169 × 1,500 pixels, file size: 2.09 MB)
It was User:Shizhao who deleted the larger File:Atlas Agena Launch - GPN-2000-001019.jpg (2,338 × 3,000 pixels, file size: 7.89 MB)
That was not my fault. Although I was the one who asked to fix it here. -- Common Good (talk) 19:01, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

File:JulliardSchool.JPG

Thanks for your rename at File:Bridge Cincinatti.jpg; much better than my suggestion.

Since you're on the blessed list and I'm not, can I also call your attention to File:JulliardSchool.JPG? TJRC (talk) 00:50, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Of the two you suggest, I prefer File:Juilliard School - Alice Tully Hall.jpg. The institution is Juilliard, and I think it's important to have that name in there (although spelled correctly). My concern was correcting the spelling, but your inclusion of the building name is a good one. I also prefer to use lower-case file extensions, but that's just a personal preference. Thanks for uploading File:Desmo_750_1972_Paul_Smart.JPG. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Desmo_750_1972_Paul_Smart.JPG]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Better source request for File:BagleyDD386.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:BagleyDD386.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the help desk or me at my talkpage. Thank you. High Contrast (talk) 20:29, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
