Problems with Android app

I have tried three times in recent days to upload a photo I took, using the Commons Android app. All three attempts have failed. I have encountered similar problems in the past, and have sometimes had to uninstall and reinstall the app in order to upload. I would donate more photos if the app worked smoothly. @Cullen328: I had similar problems along with crashes when using the regular version, until last month. The Beta test version 2.9.0, which has been available for about a month, has behaved much more smoothly. As it happens, I normally also carry a real camera, hence make sparing use of the app, mainly for instant gratification and more precise locations. I also use the Wikishootme site https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikishootme/original.html to find what's missing in whatever place I'm walking. Jim.henderson (talk) 19:53, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Image deleted on Flickr

Hi, folks. I've been editing en.wiki and pt.wiki for several years now, but I'm still a newbie here on WikiCommons. So I have a question that is maybe dump, but anyway. The image below, was taken from a Flickr account. However, it was deleted from Flickr, so how to attest that it's free to use here on Wikimedia Project? It seems a Copyvio to me, but as I said, I`m a newbie here on WikiCommons.

The licence review is an independent check that the file had a particular licence on Flickr at some point. There's a watermark on the file, but the Flickr user's https://www.flickr.com/photos/jhonief/ other uploads have the same mark. Is there any particular reason to think it's a copyvio? It seems so. This happens to files from Flickr occasionally. Sometimes users delete their accounts on Flickr entirely, but the licenses are considered valid (and irrevocable) if they were confirmed by licence review. --ghouston (talk) 21:40, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There's a small problem with the license: the uploader used cc-by-2.0, but the review said it was cc-by-sa-2.0, so maybe it should be changed to the latter. --ghouston (talk) 21:45, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that's correct. FlickreviewR 2 marked the image reviewlicense=cc-by-2.0, which matches the licence tag, but for some reason it added a positional parameter of "cc-by-sa-2.0", which {{FlickreviewR}} treats as the author name. --bjh21 (talk) 14:02, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, either the template changed or the bot was misusing it. FlickreviewR 2 actually changed the license and set "status=passed_changed" as well, but that gives a warning that the reviewed license is different to the license (that it set itself). I could put the original uploader's original, unverified and probably incorrect, license back and the warning would then make sense, but the license would probably be wrong. New version of "Cosmic ray flux versus particle energy" image

Hi all,

I've produced a new version of the image Cosmic ray flux versus particle energy to include recent scientific discoveries. I'm the author of the original file, but that was 12 years ago (almost to the day!) when images were still uploaded directly to Wikipedia. I'm not allowed to replace the image here on the Commons (new user?) so if someone else could kindly do it for me that would be highly appreciated. - I agree, but it's in use on Wikipedia pages in 40 languages. Changing the reference on every single one of those to update the links is a lot more work. newspaper pictures from the web

Hey. I have doubted whether to use images from newspapers here on Commons?

For example, from Jyllands-Posten [2] and possibly Danma's Radio (DR) [3] websites?

Here are oam examples that I doubt are not so much in it. Therefore I just want to inquire first.

1. [4] The picture of the train accident on the Stroebælt bridge. You have to put something up on the Commons. The photo is taken by Mads Claus Rasmussen according to his name says the following "© Scanpix" what does it mean? --Sorenhk ^{(talk // contributions)} 16:06, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

a few weeks ago i uploaded logo of "I liga polska w piłce nożnej". And it was delete. I want ask to know how i can upload logo? If you uploaded it on Commons, it must have been under a different account, because you don't have any deleted edits on Commons.
Commons accepts only materials that are either public domain or offered under a sufficiently free license.
Assuming the logo is complex enough to be eligible for copyright, it is necessary to provide a specific free license, such as {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}.
Assuming that the club owns the copyright (not a given: by default that would belong to the artist who designed it), then (since the logo has previously been published) there are basically two ways for the club to provide that license:
1. Go through the process outlined at COM:OTRS. OTRS is pretty backlogged, and this might take months to complete, but it will eventually solve the matter

1. A more rapid approach: on a public-facing website that clearly belongs to the club, they can indicate the license under which the logo is made available. Cite that (with a link) as the basis for permission when uploading, and apply the same license on Commons.

System issues.

Hello,

I'm new to wiki and have been working hard cleaning up articles and move them to their correct places, but I'm having difficulty moving a cat and was blocked doing so. At first I got a time-out prompt stating that I could only move so many items at a time and that I had to wait a few minutes before I could move items again (for safety reasons). I waited as requested and tried to move category Genesis Motors to Genesis Motor the correct name listed on Hyundai Motor Company's documentation and the system ended up flagging me and now I can't move items anymore on commons.wiki. I haven't checked the normal wiki section yet because I haven't had this issue over there.

You are new here you, so you should request to move pages, because this task may involve several steps.

And that's what may happened, you are unable to move pages here. No one blocked you.

"Normal wiki" is kind.. yeah, bad. If you are trying to say that at some Wikipedia, probably English Wikipedia you didn't have problems yet, is because they have different rules.

See this , is a request to change the name, but you didn't provide a source, and you didn't wait to a mover to evaluate it.

Just people with "move tool" can move some types of pages, to not create problems as you created... here, here, ...

Use the talk page before try to move things, especially categories.

I explained earlier in my post, that I've been moving and correcting post here in (commons). I only brought up being able to move and edit on the "other wikis" earlier, just in case someone told me that my cookies were the issue.

Whatever problems you saw were based on the main cat here, if you check the log, I was flagged several times (before I knew how to properly use the move tool). You will also see, that I DID in fact call a bot (it never showed) and that was days ago. I came back to move it myself AFTER I successfully moved several of cats to their correct placements, and that's when I was warned to take a break before I could move said cat.

@VerifiedFixes: welcome to Commons. Please see COM:RENCAT; it usually takes 7 days (or longer, if Gremlins have been mucking with the robots) for the bot to rename things. Only those granted the "file movers" User Permission can rename files and pages. Please also try to be patient with the restrictions imposed by the platform; they're here to protect the system from malicious or novice users, and poorly-configured bots/scripts. The system has rate-limiting built-in to prevent potential abuse/misuse. If the system says take a break: grab a cup of tea, tunnel down the rabbit-hole of Help Pages, wait a while, and try again later. --dsprc ^(talk) 05:23, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Weird error uploading an image

Rodrigo, it sounds like a bug in the upload handler (though I've not seen with images, only large media files). If it persists (they're usually transient) you may want to file a ticket over on Phabricator so Devs can look into it. --dsprc ^(talk) 05:43, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Good to hear, as the process at Phabricator is a bit technical and rather Byzantine, to say the least; it requires a certain level of masochism to see to fruition. (I'm surprised this dynamically-generated, rickety, bucket of bolts stays online like it does. An engineering marvel, or miracle, as it were.)

Hello, There is already an article under the name of Tobias Young, dedicated to a painter. Though there is an IFBB Pro and a celebrity fitness model name Tobias Young (https://www.optimumnutrition.com/en-us/athletes/ifbb-pro/tobias-young)as well. I am looking forward to write a Wikipedia article under the name Tobias Young for a fitness celebrity, please do let me know if its possible and if so how can I do it if the name is already assigned to a someone else. on the other hand if its not possible what are my alternatives ?

Uploading newspaper front page

I did manage to upload this image:Wisconsin State Journal front page, Sep 4, 1952, but didn't get the licensing right. I know this is permissible because there are newspaper front page images all over Wikipedia. Any help straightening this out will be much appreciated.

@MikeB17: Based on the deletion summary, I think you need to upload it directly to Wikipedia instead, with a fair-use rationale for the article where you want to display it. Here on Commons everything needs a free licence.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:33, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Image uploading

Hello.

I am creating my first page in wikipedia, and I am having trouble uploading an image.

When I try to upload it, I get an error saying that Wikipedia was not able to determine whether or not the image can be used:

"We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons."

Why is this happening?

This is a logo for a company page that I am creating in wikipedia, and I don't understand how to resolve this issue.

Don't upload logos as JPG oder PNG files but rather as SVGs. Select one good logo and don't try to upload every possible variation. --Magnus (talk) 11:14, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Tsungam: I tried different variations as one of them worked and the others didn't, and I was trying to see if there was a pattern. None of them were SVG, so I don't understand why some get through and the others don't.

I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The logo you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to have the logo designer/photographer send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you want to use the file on English Wikipedia, please read WP:F. @Jeff G.: I am trying to upload 2 different images. One of them is the logo, for which I have the Illustrator file, and I can upload an image with greater resolution. I am also trying to upload a shop picture and the resolution I have is 2048x1365. It's not the greatest quality I have seen, but it's a good quality image and the photographer does not have it at a higher quality. @Alfasoftpt: Signing your posts on talk pages is required by Commons:Signatures policy. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Kipi Uploader: Overwriting issues

Hello, I am currently using the Kipi uploader to get my pictures from my hard drive up to Wikimedia Commons. This worked out reasonably well up to now. Today I encountered the following issue:: I uploaded a file with a name that existed already on Commons (also uploaded by me at an earlier stage). On my hard drive both files were in different folders, so there was no clash, but here on Commons there are no folders, so the old file got overwritten. The Kipi uploader did not provide me any warning. So the questions I have now are the following: How can I avoid such overwritings in the future? How can I most efficiently get the overwritten and the new picture into two different files?

Tracking the number of downloads of a particular file

Christinelmiller: As far as I know, there are no statistics on how many times a thumbnail of a file used in various Wikimedia projects has been viewed or how many times the full resolution version has been downloaded, but as far as the number of times the file description page has been viewed, there is a link on each page called "Page information" which has statistics on page views in the past 30 days and contains further links to tools supporting longer time periods. —LX (talk, contribs) 23:16, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bitte um Schnelllöschung wegen Urheberrechtsverletzung

da ich leider nicht weiß wohin ich mich als Nichtmitglied wenden soll, versuche ich es über diesen Kanal.

Bei der Karte: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Die_Oberpfalz_nach_dem_Hausvertrag_von_Pavia_1329.jpg handelt es sich um einen Ausschnitt eines von mir selbst erstellten Werkes, das im Internet seit 2016 frei zugänglich vorzufinden ist (https://www.historisches-lexikon-bayerns.de/Lexikon/Datei:Karte_Bayern_1329.jpg) Da sich die Person, die dieses Bild hochgeladen hat, zwar die Mühe gemacht hat, es qualitativ zu verschlechtern und dann noch die Hinweise auf meinen Namen in der Abbildung zu tilgen, anstatt mich zu kontaktieren und zu fragen, ob er es verwenden kann, möchte ich, als Urheber, darum bitten die Datei sofort zu löschen.

Basically, this is saying that File:Die Oberpfalz nach dem Hausvertrag von Pavia 1329.jpg plagiarizes, and does not credit, Stefan Schnupp's work at https://www.historisches-lexikon-bayerns.de/Lexikon/Datei:Karte_Bayern_1329.jpg. Why does File:Wikipedian-in-Residence_Scope_Diagram_Page_1.png have a black background

Hi all

I think that File:Wikipedian-in-Residence_Scope_Diagram_Page_1.png is supposed to have a white background but for some reason on my computer it has a black background on Outreach here (it has a transparent background because its a .png), but a white background here on Commons sometimes (but not always). What is going on?

How to link gallery category to wiki?

I was looking at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Kutn%C3%A1_Hora & seeing only one photo of the Jesuit College decided to upload my own... Nonetheless, in trying to figure out how to move them to the 'Jesuit College' sub-heading, I accidentally stumbled across https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Jesuit_College_(Kutn%C3%A1_Hora) which now has 141 photos. @Cpetreman: assuming that by “the original wiki” you mean the gallery page, you could add a category link similarly to what was done for the ossuary (which also has its own gallery) at the bottom of the page. Another conventional way to add a link would be to put {{Cat see also}} under the section heading. Caption feature

I had the same question :) So, I merge it to this section.

I see that new feature appeared at the page of every image at Wikimedia Commons. I mean "Captions".

Should I copy the caption from the template "Information"? Or this new caption should be more similar to Labels at Wikidata, that is

Captions has to start from small letter.
The whole description should be one sentence length.
The sentence should be without full stop.

Dear help desk people, I just discovered the new "caption" feature and found it rather difficult to understand. I read the respective help page, which did not really help me. Apparently a caption is supposed to contain "structured data", whatever that is supposed to mean. I still do not understand, how a caption should differ from the ordinary description. I usually upload images of organisms, such as File:Saponaria ocymoides 2 RF.jpg. In this case I just entered one of the popular names of the plant as a caption for each language, with "Latin" for the scientific name. But I am really not sure whether this is what is intended or whether I am supposed to enter the contents of the entire description as a caption, possibly without the parentheses, italics and commas. As long as I cannot understand this feature (and so far I certainly do not understand it), I shall ignore it and not use it any more. Updating Company logo

Hello

I'm trying to update the company logo and updated the new logo onto the Wikimedia Commons image section.

I've come unstuck however as I'm not sure of the copyright/trademark specifications and am not sure how to take the old logo down.

Ideally I would replace the new logo with the old one and the old logo is superceded by the new one.

Please can you advice?

@A1exxa: First off, it's okay to have old versions of things here: rather than remove the old file outrite, change it from "File:Company logo.svg" to "File:Company logo (1999-2018).svg" and that way, we have both versions. Secondly, copyright and trademark are different beasts: many trademarks are not copyrighted or even copyright-able in the United States. Something like File:Seal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.svg definitely has trademark protection: you cannot just slap that bad boy on any product you want to sell. But because it was created by and for a federal agency in the United States, it is in the public domain and has no copyright protection. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 04:36, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@A1exxa: May I presume this is about File:RPS BM RGB.png, and that that is the new logo? As Koavf says, Commons shouldn't get rid of the old logo, wherever that may be. It's relevant for historical reasons. I see this is UK; they tend to have a lower threshold than the U.S. for what is copyrightable, so perhaps that is copyrightable in the UK (it wouldn't be in the U.S.). Presuming it is trademarked, you will want to add {{Trademarked}}. If that is copyrightable in the UK, then this will get tricky unless you are a representative of the company. (Are you?) If it is copyrightable in the UK, then we need an explicit "free license" to host it on Commons. This in no way releases trademark rights, but it does license reuse that does not infringe trademark. (I know this is tricky. Intellectual property law is tricky, and that's independent of any decisions we make here.) I would recommend something like {{cc-by-sa 4.0|author= RPS Group}} as the one that holds onto as many rights as they are allowed to hold and still be compatible with Commons' rules.

Once that's sorted out, you reference it in an article on Wikipedia exactly the same way you reference any other image file. In particular, if there is an existing Wikipedia article, you can just replace this filename in the article. Remember to refresh your browser cache after doing so, otherwise you are liable to still see the old version. - Jmabel ! talk 04:55, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In available category:"Category:Images of user: Vitold Muratov -People" I created a blue subcategory:"Category:Images of user: Vitold Muratov - Undressed People". And uploaded her with files. From any file I get from the bottom in this subcategory. But the parent category on top of this subcategory does not see it at all.What to do? Mass deletion nomination of Canadian signs

Have no opinion on the merits of the mass deletion requests.... but there is an editor nominating a certain type of image for delet ion on mass. I'm concerned that we're being overwhelmed here... with hundreds of articles affected on English Wikipedia. Is it normal to nominate every image in categories? WEBM file won't run within articles

This file File:41018 Schiefe Ebene Nov 2016.webm worked very well six months ago as a movie. Now it will not run at all. It will run from its page in Commons.

- Thanks for this but I waited a long time on each article, closing and opening again several times and clicking anything I could click. Now, encouraged to repeat the performance, I tried again but in both articles as I clicked the x to close the pop-up a picture flashed for an instant and when I reopened the pop-up it played! It is two articles, en:Steam locomotive and en:Rimutaka Incline. Now I've tried again and get the flashed image when it first opens. Still have to close and reopen to get it to run. I received a CCːfrom Senior Deputy County Attorney,Chesterfield County, that 2 hours ago he sent to permissions-commonswikimedia.org, the pemission to use a drawing of Dutch Gap Conservation Center, but I could not find it. @Oldperson: he may not have uploaded it here. It is (afaik) possible to send your images (or a link to them) to permissions-commons and they can upload it for you. I searched for Dutch Gap Conservation and found nothing this month. Either it was uploaded without any description or it wasn't uploaded. I have permission from Chesterfield County's Deputy Attorney . I included in my sourse the OTRS clause and the entire permissions inluding it's address to permissions.. They sent the email with me as a cc but they named the image as image001.jpg. I renamed it before uploading to Farrar's Island Dutch Gap Conservation Center. It is difficult, in fact mind boggling, trying to navigate the upload system. Instructions say if the permission is emailed then put OTRS template in the Source.

However I can't expect someone who is not an editor to try and learn the Uploader and go through the trouble of filling in the blanks. The system is definitely not user friendly. Will this image wind up being nominated for deletion, even though I included the persmissions and the owner of the copyright send a permissions email.?Oldperson (talk) 20:03, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I asked chesterfield.gov (Virginia)to send in a permissions , as per instructions on the commons. to CC: me, they attached the image but as image001.jpg, not as Dutch Gap Conservation era. They had previously mailed me the image and I renamed it. The image was not uploaded to commons by OTRS staff. And if they had done so I could not have found it because of the name of the image (image001.jpg). Back to the beginning. Since it was chesterfield.gov who emailed the permissions, how would I get a ticket?

I uploaded the image with the proper name and in source I included the permissions from Chesterfield . which includes the name and phone number of the county attorney. I don't know what else to do, meanwhile the issue of obtaining permission from a third party, having them email the permissions to wikipedia commons and having OTRS staff know to notify me with a ticket number is highly convoluted and almost impossible to manage. Hi, I'm AmericanLemming. I do a fair amount of editing on the English Wikipedia, but I have little experience with Wikimedia Commons. I recently uploaded five images related to ALS to add them to the English Wikipedia article. All of them have been marked for deletion because they lack "evidence for permission." All but one of them come from the open-access journal article "Modelling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: progress and possibilities", licensed under Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0. Would including the URL to the webpage that contains the full article (http://dmm.biologists.org/content/10/5/537) or the URL to the full PDF of the article (http://dmm.biologists.org/content/dmm/10/5/537.full.pdf) be sufficient to provide evidence for permission? The four images are "File:ALS Disease Pathology and Proposed Disease Mechanisms.jpg", "File:ALS animal models.jpg", "File:ALS animal models, photos only.jpg", and "File:ALS animal models, photos only.pdf".

@AmericanLemming: with regard to the images from the review article, I would indeed add a link to the article's web page. The PDF version does not mention the CC-BY-3.0 license and is quite a big file, so I would avoid linking there. The problem that I see is that we can't upload a page of newspaper here, all images here are free.

There is the possibility to upload a low resolution image of a file under copyright at English Wikipedia, however you must contact the Wikipedia community to see how and if your idea is allowed there.

Copyright help regarding File:Parsa Pirouzfar2.jpg

The picture Parsa Pirouzfar2.JPG which is recently uploaded by me (Sc Wikinevis user) here in Wikipedia is an open source and everyone are allowed to use it.

This picture of Parsa Pirouzfar (Iranian Actor, Theater Director and Painter) was taken by an Iranian photographer Saghi Baligh and it belongs to her.

There are different version of this picture and also other pictures of other Actors and Actresses taken by this Iranian photographer (SAGHI BALIGH) in different social networks and all over the Internet, especially in Iranian websites. The google link you sent me and you believe is a copyright violation is actually an Iranian Website who used the picture of Ms. Saghi Bbaligh. Because THERE IS NO LICENSE TAGS FOR HER PICTURES | SAGHI BALIGH'S IMAGES ARE 'OPEN SOURCE' AND FREE TO BE USED, SHARED AND MODIFIED.

The photographer published this work and other of her pictures in her public Instagram page for people to use and share and she doesn't have any problem if someone use it in their social platforms, communities and websites.

If you believe you need more information you can contact the photographer herself by Public Instagram page, where she uploaded this picture and uploads all of her work.

The photographer doesn't have problem with her pictures being uploaded in wikipedia or in any other platforms.

In most countries, absence of explicit license means "all rights reserved". This is true in all countries that signed the Berne Convention, but I see Iran is not a signatory, so I have no idea what the law is there. This is a complicated case that would better be discussed at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 17:51, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We have a brief overview of Iranian copyright at Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Iran, and an English translation of the 1970 copyright law can be found here. I don't think Iranian law even applies, however, since the image was originally published on Instagram. Whatever the case, if Saghi Baligh is okay with it being freely redistributed and modified, permission should be provided via COM:OTRS. clpo13_(talk) 18:08, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bild unscharf

Nach der Einbindung von Bildmaterial in einen neu entstehenden Artikel wird mir ein Bild "unscharf" angezeigt (pixelige Ränder). Klicke ich auf das Bild, wird es in guter Auflösung dargestellt. Kann ich das verhindern bzw. wie kann vorgehen, um das zu verhindern?

@Juan Villalobos: I don’t think so; I don’t see anything like a licence on the webpage, and the book itself has a notice saying it’s ©1965 by the Regents of the U. of California. According to COM:HIRTLE it won’t be free until 2061.
