How do I upload videos and photos from my phone?

How delete audio file[edit]

we are uploading audio files for pa.wiktionary.org on wikimedia commons. Some files uploaded with wrong code. So we want delete approximate 250 files. So now what we do? please Help.--Stalinjeet (talk) 13:49, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

  • Not sure what you mean by "the wrong code" so not sure if deletion is actually the right solution. Could you be more clear about what's wrong and give at least one example? - Jmabel ! talk 15:45, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
  • We are uploading audio file with 'pa' code like- 'Pa-ਉਲਟਾਉਣਾ.ogg'. But in some files we miss 'pa' code. Files uploaded with only this type of tittle 'ਉਲਟਾਉਣਾ.ogg'. We want delete these type of files.--Stalinjeet (talk) 01:44, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Link service: File:Pa-ਉਲਟਾਉਣਾ.ogg and File:ਉਲਟਾਉਣਾ.ogg. Oops, the latter file does not exist.
Please request the renaming with rationale "To harmonize the file names of a set of videos"; read Commons:File renaming. — Speravir – 01:04, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Which is to say: the solution is not deletion. If you don't have filemover privileges yourself, tag them appropriately using {{Rename}} and they will be moved. - Jmabel ! talk 04:18, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Deletion[edit]

I had uploaded several files on Wikimedia on the last week, but there is a delay with permission, so I guess I must delete them, but don't know how. I hope there will be no sanctions against me for copyright violation as I hadn't done it expressly. John Francis Templeson (talk) 21:44, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

  • Just nominate them for deletion as you would anyone else's images. And, no, you won't be in trouble for this. - Jmabel ! talk 23:03, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
@John Francis Templeson: Eight of them are ripe for deletion per your user talk page. If you want to save them, please either detail the permission or send evidence of it via OTRS.   — Jeff G. ツ 04:19, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Conversely, if you believe deletion is appropriate, as the uploader you should weigh in and say so in the relevant deletion discussions. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Re-uploading file for OTRS[edit]

I've uploaded a file (Hartmut Oschkinat SFB1078.jpg) with the tag OTRS:pending, but did not manage to get the OTRS resolved due to cultural differences (photo was taken by person A, licensed to institute B -- as far as I know institute B has complete rights, and person C contacted institute B to obtain the photo for upload. Last time person C was unwilling to prolong contact with institute B to go through with OTRS). Now the photo has been deleted, but I have managed to persuade person C to pass on the contact to institute B so that I can resolve the OTRS myself. Is there a way to reinstate the file so that when the person at institute B is going through the OTRS generator, they can put "Hartmut Oschkinat SFB1078.jpg" as the Commons file name at step 2 out of 5? Or is it preferable that the person at institute B just attach the file to the email? I want to make this process as easy as possible as the other people are not native English speakers. Thanks! Selkie upsilon (talk) 14:18, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

  • If you want the image restored for this purpose, the place to go is Commons:Undeletion requests, but I'd guess you probably will be turned down.
  • They can refer to "Hartmut Oschkinat SFB1078.jpg" whether it is currently online or not. But, yes, if it's not currently online, it might be less ambiguous if they attach a file (or a URL if it is online elsewhere). - Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks. I will get them to include the file in the email. There is an URL with the file, but that version is only 46 kB, whereas the fullsized version that they provided is 2.2MB. --Selkie upsilon (talk) 21:12, 26 May 2017 (UTC)

Overwrite video with new version[edit]

I uploaded a set of videos. The original versions of these videos had an audio error, making the voices sound strange. I later got corrected videos with correct audio. I am overwriting the old videos with the new ones, so that users will only access the ones with good audio.

My overwriting the content seems like the right thing to do by Commons:Overwriting existing files. Commons preserves the old files, which seems fine if that is how things work. It does mean about 200mb of useless video are kept, which I think nowadays is not enough to matter, but I thought I would check in here to confirm. Is it correct that old overwriten files which should never be used should still remain in Commons, and that there is no way to designate them as trash? See examples -

Thanks, Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:32, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

I would overwrite them. Correcting mistakes or improving transcoding quality in a non-controversial way, is a good overwriting rationale. If superseded and separate files, I would put the old versions up for speedy, someone can challenge and convert to a DR if they feel it needs more discussion. Policy is not unambiguous as it is impossible to preempt all situations. -- (talk) 16:44, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

That seems reasonable. I will overwrite. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:50, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Uploading an author's promotional picture[edit]

I wanted to add a picture of Alex Tizon to his Wikipedia article. His website had one, but it had lapsed and is now archived here. From reading Wikipedia's guidelines, promotional images are allowed. However, in using the upload wizard here, I was not able to find an equivalent category.

Am I allowed to upload a promotional photo and how should I tag it in the wizard?

--KNHaw (talk) 00:10, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

KNHaw, Commons accepts 100% *free* items. Copyrighted items *cannot* be uploaded unless the person releases permission. Try and contact him to send an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. MechQuester (talk) 03:44, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

OK. Thanks. I will try but given that it's an abandoned site and that the owner passed away last month anyways, I am doubtful.
Is there any ongoing effort to correct the Wikipedia guidelines so they fall in line with Wikicommons?
--KNHaw (talk) 16:33, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
Absolutely not. Each language-specific Wikipedia is fully permitted to decide to host non-free images that would not be eligible for Commons, and to set its own policies for that. - Jmabel ! talk 22:15, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

how to get a wikimedia photo on to a wikipedia page[edit]

My name is Gayle McLaughlin. I have a wikipedia page which someone else created, but I am making some edits. I would like to replace the main photo near the top of the page. I have uploaded a new photo to wikimedia commons. How do I upload to the wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gayle McLaughlin (talk • contribs) 04:44, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

If you click the 'edit' link at the top of the page you will see 'Infobox officeholder' at the beginning of the editing window. It has a parameter called 'image'. This is the name of the image that is shown. Just replace its value with 'Original_grey_background_-_Copy_(2)light_edited-3.jpg'. Ruslik (talk) 11:47, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

SVG not rendered correctly[edit]

Hi! I just uploaded File:Arbre généalogique Antigone.svg. It looks perfectly both in Inkscape and in Firefox (the uploaded version), and was also good on the upload page (the thumbnail in the “source file” box), but the texts somehow loose their x coordinates. Artist estate licensing images of deceased painter's paintings[edit]

I am writing on behalf of the Jon Schueler Artist Estate. While Jon died in 1992, the estate owns all rights to the images of his work. I would like to give license to include two images of his paintings in the commons. What license do I need to use, and how can I label it so it is clear that it is the legal estate submitting those images, and not some third party, so they don't get deleted? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Msalvesen (talk • contribs) 18:21, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Commons accepts only free licenses, i.e. which permit anyone to use and modify the work, even for commercial purpose. The recommended license is Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0). You have to state that you are the copyright holder in an email sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Please state clearly what images you publish under the free license, e.g. by uploading them first and marking them with the {{OTRS pending}} template, then simply copying the URLs into the email. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:30, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Using photos of paintings[edit]

I would like to add some photos of paintings made by artist who died in 2003. Those pictures are recently published on the webpage of his family. They are willing to give me the permission to upload their original photos on Wikimedia Commons. I need an opinion if it is ok regarding copyrights and what are the options? Falcon Bos (talk) 21:16, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Commons accepts only free licenses, i.e. which permit anyone to use and modify the work, even for commercial purpose. The recommended license is Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0). If they are willing to grant such a license, there are two ways to communicate this:
  1. They can state that they are the copyright holder in an email sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (appropriate content for the email is described at COM:OTRS). They should state clearly what images you publish under the free license; typically, the simplest way to do this is by uploading them first and marking them with the {{OTRS pending}} template, then simply copying the URLs into the email. Another alternative is to attach copies of the images to the email.
  2. Given that the images are already on the web page of his family, they can indicate the license (e.g. CC BY-SA 4.0) there. Then anyone could upload to Commons, citing that web page as the source.
In this case, I think the second should be simpler. It also spares the backlogged OTRS team some work. - Jmabel ! talk 22:24, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

Adding image resolution[edit]

I want to be able to upload a new version of an image in a higher resolution, but I can't figure out how. I want the lower resolution image to be the default one, but also have the higher resolution one so that I can use it when I need to. This is for the logo of the Old Norse Wikipedia in Incubator. For example, the Ancient Greek logo has the 135x135 image as the default image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-grc.svg There is also the option to view higher resolution versions of the image. I would like to be able to do the same thing with the Norse logo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-non.png Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ScriptorHistoriae (talk • contribs) 01:08, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

  • Please always upload the highest resolution available. Downsampling is performed automatically to get lower resolutions as needed. - Jmabel ! talk 02:10, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for replying. I uploaded the highest resolution, but the preview isn't the right size. It would be best if it showed it at 135x155 instead of 522×599. I also posted the wrong link:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-non.svg
On the Ancient Greek logo, it says that the original file is 135x155, which is why I'm confused about how to get the right preview size. --ScriptorHistoriae (talk) 19:54, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Kodak 3A Camera before 1917[edit]

Hi

I have just uploaded 2 photographs on my late aunts Kodak 3A Camera from before 1917.

It looks like there were several versions of the Kodak 3A, and I am not shore which one I have.

The versions of the Kodak 3A I have seen on you-tub, are the metal versions with rounded edges.

The one in my position is made of wood.

The photos were taken on my Canon M5, photographic details embedded in the photos ie Camera settings, serial # etc..

I do not know which Kodak 3A this camera is.

Hope you can use the photo's.

[edit]

Hello,

I uploaded the project logo of Maharashtra Samruddhi Corridor on its official Wikipedia Page. Days later I received a notice regarding deletion and it states like this :

Thanks for uploading File:MSRDC Top Logo 0 0.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear. If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{Tl|self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Following are questions :-

How to include copyright tag and where it should be placed?

What is the possible solution for it to get approved? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mahasamruddhimahamarg (talk • contribs) 07:56, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

You should have probably added {{pd-textlogo}} to it. Ruslik (talk) 13:23, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Copyright expired in Italy but how about North America?[edit]

Hi, I need help creating this image on the English Wiki from the Italian wiki here. How do I delete two photos?[edit]

I've uploaded two flower images which I now believe have the wrong names. I don't know the right names, so how can I delete the images? the images are File:Camellia rosmannii RBG Melbourne 14-4-2017.jpg and File:Camellia rosmanii RBG Melbourne 10 April 20. Well, Jmabel, you could rename them simply as camellias, but it's a nearly useless description because it's so vague. As soon as I have identified the subject of my photos correctly I intend to resumbit them precisely described. But if you insist I'll just expand your description of them as "Camellias". Thanks for your quick response. Erictimewell (talk) 06:13, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

Correction of mistake in description[edit]

Hi, greetings from Polish Wikipedia. We recently had a little discussion https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Zg%C5%82o%C5%9B_b%C5%82%C4%85d_w_artykule#.C5.9Awistunka_g.C3.B3rska about this photo: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plik:Phybon.jpg The bird was identified as Phylloscopus bonelli and used as such on numerous Wiki pages (including Polish), and I doubt it is this species. (Reason: different head markings. Ph. bonelli should have pale lores and eye-ring unbroken by eye-stripe, whereas bird on the photo has strong eye-stripe which crosses eye-ring and reaches to lore). I would propose description of this photo "Phylloscopus sp.". I wrote to author of the photo but he seems not to be active on Wiki anymore. What can I do next? Help please :) (I don't quite know how to change descriptions, file names etc on commons) Wireonek (talk) 08:07, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

In its description on Commons it is actually identified as Phylloscopus trochilus. Ruslik (talk) 12:03, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: Where do you see that?   — Jeff G. ツ 20:02, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
It is called 'Pouillot fitis' and the link leads to frwiki where is explained that the Latin name is Phylloscopus trochilus. Ruslik (talk) 04:51, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
So let's rename it File:Phylloscopus trochilus, Tarn, Midi-Pyrénées, France.jpg.   — Jeff G. ツ 05:50, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
@Wireonek: What do you mean by the "sp." portion of "Phylloscopus sp."?   — Jeff G. ツ 20:14, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

@Ruslik0:, indeed it is, I don't know why I hadn't noticed that. However, it is categorized as Ph. bonelli, file name suggests bonelli and wikipedias use it as bonelli. I can replace the photos in articles (there are other pictures of Ph.bonelli on commons) but if somebody could change name as @Jeff G.: suggests, and delete category "Phylloscopus bonelli" it would be great. @Jeff G.: sp = species. Phylloscopus sp. means that the bird belong to genus Phylloscopus but we do not determine which species in that genus. I suggested such identification because this genus is quite tricky in identification on the basis of photos only. Some species, as Ph. trochilus and Ph. collybita, are best separated on the basis of song, and from some photos are not possible to identify for sure. On the discussed photo it can well be Ph. trochilus but I can't exclude e.g. Ph. ibericus (I don't say that somebody more experienced with this genus can id this bird for sure, I only say I can't that :) ). Wireonek (talk) 07:42, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

I renamed the files and updated the description. I do not think that we should delete any categories. Ruslik (talk) 12:55, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: thanks. As to categories: the file shouldn't be in category "Phylloscopus bonelli". https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Phylloscopus_bonelli Wireonek (talk) 16:21, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Now I see that @Kookaburra 81: wrote under the photo: "File renaming criterion #1: At the original uploader’s request. It's bonelli and not trochilus !" Could we discuss the question of species of bird on the photo, then? I wrote above why I think it can't be bonelli but I'm open to discussion, especially with photo's author. Kookaburra 81, could you please provide traits which show that it's bonelli? Why head marking is so different from described in literature and visible on other photos (e.g. from files here: http://www.javierblasco.arrakis.es/families.htm ) In the meantime I replaced the photo on a few Wikipedia pages with another picture of Ph.bonelli. Wireonek (talk) 17:17, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

@Wireonek, Ruslik0, Kookaburra 81: As a compromise, how about restricting the name, description, and category to genus Phylloscopus?   — Jeff G. ツ 17:28, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I proposed such description from the beginning, as I don't feel that I can tell which species is that bird (only that it is not bonelli, in my opinion), and for me it would be perfectly fine. However, now that @Kookaburra 81: commented on the photo, I would like to wait for his arguments for his identification. I admit that maybe I posted here too early after leaving message on his discussion page, but in fact I was pretty sure he does not visit Wikipedia any more because he had last edits from 2014 (for which assumption I am sorry) Wireonek (talk) 17:35, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
@Wireonek: That assumption was valid, given that user's inactivity on all WMF projects.   — Jeff G. ツ 17:42, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Sorry that I moved the picture before this discussion came to an end. Due to it is not linked from here directly, I havn't noticed that there are doubts about the bird. The request was initiated by the original uploader and there was no reason for me to believe it could mess up something. Please feel free to ignore the move in case it was wrong and put it to a correct filename. I will not put this page on my watchlist, in the unlikely case of any need to contact me, please give me a ping or use my user talk. Greetings. --Druschba 4 (talk) 18:50, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Hello, first of all, excuse me for my bad English. Moreover it is true that I rarely go on wiki, because I find it very complex to use. Concerning the image of the phylloscopus. It is true that the image was taken long ago .... But bonelli is very common with me and trochilus only passing in the spring and especially in the autumn. Of course, the most characteristic to differentiate them is the singing completely different, especially as trochilus is a rather talkative bird that is often heard in migration. It is astonishing that at the time I was wrong ... but everything is possible .... It is true that the head is not characteristic, but the legs and especially the feet are much less clear ( Yellow) than trochilus. • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ 19:59, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Copyright infringement[edit]

I recently uploaded a colourised photograph of a WWII German officer that was rejected on grounds of infringement. I would like to avoid this happening again but feel my colourised photos could enhance the quality of the entries. I feel that I could overcome this by simply signing away any claim to the original author. I expect no reward or recognition. I am in effect simply colourising their work for free.

Please advise.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Compact Jam (talk • contribs) 20:39, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

@Compact Jam: I presume this refers to COM:Deletion requests/File:Erhler-version-2.jpg. The problem wasn’t with your colorization per se, or your credit for the modification, rather that the original image was apparently protected by copyright. In order for a derivative work to be free, the original must be free to start with, either in the public domain or released under a licence that allows modification. It might be best to upload the source image first, with appropriate info concerning its provenance and copyright status, and then upload your derivative version under another filename (with a link to the original—see {{Derived from}}). If in any doubt concerning the copyright, try posting at COM:VPC for advice, with a link to the original source, before uploading, or your work could go to waste. A lot of WWII images are still copyrighted because the protection usually persists for 70 years after the photographer’s death, and where the photographer is unknown the law generally provides a large ‘safety margin’ (depending on the country of origin), in effect presuming the author may have survived for 25 to 50 years after taking the picture.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:18, 20 May 2017 (UTC)

I just now began the process of requesting the de-FPing of File:Chicken February 2009-1.jpg, but someone already tried that; Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/File:Chicken February 2009-1.jpg failed, partly because several users deemed that the time period since promotion (four months) was too soon to request removal. Wiki loves Earth photo comp[edit]

Hi - I uploaded at least a dozen photos however I can only find one that has been recorded. How do I find proof for the other images that I uploaded? Cheers Kalyi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kalyi1 (talk • contribs) 08:57, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

I don't know how you uploaded them, but if you add "[[Category:Uploaded via Campaign:wle-au]]" to the bottom of each file, then that file should all show up. BTW, I suggest that you read Project_scope#Must be realistically useful for an educational purpose. For example, your image File:View from my brother's place 3.jpg is not particularly educational - we don't know exactly who you are, we don't know who your brother is (neither of which are particularly important), but you do need to tell us why the view from your brother's place is significant, preferably with the geographical coordinates of where the photo was taken. You then need to add more realistic categories. Martinvl (talk) 09:20, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
You don't need and shouldn't add that category. Better just add the template {{Wiki Loves Earth 2017|au}}, the image will then automagically appear in the Australian WLE category. Or simply use the campain's upload wizard. --Magnus (talk) 10:17, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Images of old newspapers[edit]

Hello! Are old newspapers still under copyright or they can be uploaded on commons? In particular, it is possible to upload these images (one and two) of newspapers articles published in the US in 1935-1936? If so, which licence should I use? Thank you, --Postcrosser (talk) 11:59, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

  • As far as I know, any non-New-York U.S. paper from that era should qualify for {{PD-US-not renewed}}. The second one is clearly from Philadelphia, so should be OK. For the first one you'd have to pin down that it's not one of the New York papers that did renew their copyrights. - Jmabel ! talk 15:08, 22 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you! I can't be sure the first newspaper wasn't from NY, so I'll upload just the second from Philadelphia --Postcrosser (talk) 08:25, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Uploaded Jpg picture files show up only when logged-in or searched.[edit]

Dear Wikimedia,

(1) I had uploaded three jpg picture files (a, b, c).

(2) I would like the pictures to be easily available to anyone (even when they are not logged in) when they click on 'Wikimedia Commons has media related to 'topic/category at the bottom of the Wikepedia page on that topic/category. However, only one picture (a) is visible and the other two of the pictures (b and c) cannot be seen in the thumbnails. The two thumbnails and pictures (b and c) show up only when I am logged-in or when I search Wikimedia Commons for that topic/category.

(3) (b and c) file sizes are smaller than the successful picture (a). I used the Upload Wizard in a straight-forward manner and chose the topic/category from the wizard's drop-down list. (4) How can I enable pictures (b and c) to be visible to anyone who is browsing even when they are not logged-in. (5) Thank you for your time. I was not able to find the answers in the faqs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dinodomo (talk • contribs) 14:37, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Enabling VFC[edit]

I received a message, User talk:Castillo blanco#Your VFC installation method is deprecated, telling that I should switch to a new version of VFC. I cannot enable it with the link in the message. In the first pop-up I can click 'yes', but in the second pop-up, where I am asked to confirm, the 'yes' button remains grey and the pop-up disappears after a few seconds. Is there a different way to install the new version of VFC? I cannot find it in my preferences as suggested by the message. Castillo blanco (talk) 05:39, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

Meanwhile I found the answer. Castillo blanco (talk) 06:14, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
You should not do that if there is other way to achieve the same effect. User JavaScript is the worst way of enabling things as these are usually unmaintained and break over the time. You can enable VFC in your preferences and remove that line from your JavaScript, otherwise it can’t be guaranteed that it will work in the future (also enabling gadgets in the official way means a slightly better performance). --Tacsipacsi (talk) 13:05, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
I can't figure out the name of the gadget to enable VTC in your preferences. What is the exact name of that gadget? I've deleted my commons js script but I have the same problem as the OP above. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 14:03, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
Oh, I just noticed that it’s available only for autopatrollers (it’s called VisualFileChange in the list so it’s not hard to find—if it’s available for you…). This setting should be on purpose: VFC is for batch tasks and thus creates a large backlog for the patrollers if the user isn’t autopatrolled. Then I suggest you first contribute to Commons in another way and after some time you can request autopatrolled right. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:18, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

Overwriting an image[edit]

This question is concerning File:Salt Lake City montage 19 July 2011.jpg. About five years after the collage was created, an editor changed one of the images being used, and uploaded the new collage, writing the original. I felt the change was too major and went against Commons:Overwriting existing files. I believe the new version of the collage should have been uploaded as a new file, not an overwrite. I reverted the change, but the editor in question once again replaced the image. Besides being a completely new photo, the replacement photo is much newer than the creation date of 19 July 2011 used in the collage's title. The editor's reasoning for changing the image is that the new one is a "far superior night shot." Incidentally the photographer and editor seem to be one in the same. I don't wish to start an edit war, but am I justified in reverting back to the original image? The other editor is of course welcome to upload their new version as a new file. Thanks for the help. --Beneathtimp (talk) 02:07, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

  • That should certainly be uploaded under a different filename. - Jmabel ! talk 02:59, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

How to delete a picture from Wikipedia Commons?[edit]

I uploaded an image claiming that it was my original picture, but it is some one else's. Essentially, I want to either delete it (which upload wizard isn't letting me do) or be able to reupload it as someone elses (it won't let me upload it without deleting the first one I uploaded) to give credit to the rightful owner of the image. —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.39.25.130 (talk) 16:30, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

Please log in the username you used to upload the picture so we can confirm that you want to delete it. You may also wish to tag the image with a {{speedy}} template Bastique ☎ appelez-moi! 22:52, 24 May 2017 (UTC)
But, assuming the image is either public domain or free-licensed, usually needing to correct information about a picture is not a reason to delete it. Just edit the information accordingly. Of course, if someone else holds the copyright and hasn't granted a free license, it shouldn't be here at all, and should be deleted (and not re-uploaded). - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

Public art[edit]

The Upload your own work page says: "...these are not permitted, so don't upload them! ... Photographs of art, statues ...". The prohibition seems excessively broad. Does it include permanent statues and arguably artistic fountains in a public park? Does it apply to photos of stone carvings permanently attached to the exterior of a building visible to the public? Does it apply to photos of artfully designed buildings? What about public art in a subway station? TheTrolleyPole (talk) 23:57, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

  • Laws on this are different for each country. For example, Germany is very liberal on this, France very tight, and the U.S. somewhere between. What country are you in? - Jmabel ! talk 00:10, 25 May 2017 (UTC)
In Canada it’s fine to publish derivatives of three-dimensional objects that are permanently located in public places. That includes buildings, sculptures, &c. but not murals or posters. See COM:FOP#Canada.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:40, 25 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for the answer. Are there exceptions to the prohibition on photos of murals? Commons already has a photo of a famous mural in Toronto on a building overlooking a public park. TheTrolleyPole (talk) 01:07, 25 May 2017 (UTC)
That may have slipped through the cracks as a case of ‘Flickrwashing‘ (not necessarily deliberate), but it depends on the mural’s copyright status. The only exceptions of which I’m aware would be where the mural itself has been freely licensed by the artist, its copyright has expired, or it was uncopyrightable (too simple or non-creative) in the first place.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:21, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

How often has an image been used on the web outside Wikimedia/Wikipedia[edit]

Good morning all, I wondered whether there was a way to discover how often an image from Wikimedia commons has been used on the web outside Wikipedia? I don’t know about general tools, but you can find where an image appears using Google Images—just paste the Commons image URL (of the file itself, not the description page) to the “Search by image” box. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:08, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

I can only confirm that this is broken. It's not possible to collapse the Creative Commons options, and it's not possible to expand any of the other sections. You should be able to Special:Upload as an alternative, but I'm guessing we're going to have even more files with bogus CC licenses until the default form is repaired. Missing sidebar links[edit]

I used to have links like "Copyright violation" and "Nominate for deletion" appear in my sidebar. If I'm not mistaken, those links were enabled via a plugin, but now they don't appear on pages in the File namespace. "Copyright violation" doesn't appear at all, while "Nominate for deletion" appears on every page except the File namespace pages. Why is that? I believe the gadget that's malfunctioning could be "Quick Delete" (not AjaxQuickDelete), but I'm not familiar enough with the plugin or gadgets in general to be sure.
