File:臺南鹽水國小.JPG[edit]

Many schools in Taiwan have such a design. A public walkway runs through the first floor of the school building. I don't know which category this walkway fits into, "Category:Concourses" or "Category:Hallways"?--Kai3952 (talk) 09:04, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

  • I believe you want the (apparently underused) Category:Breezeways. - Jmabel ! 17:24, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
    • Which raises the question (asked in general, not directed to Kai): is File:0 Seneffe - Galerie palladienne (1).JPG, currently in Category:Breezeways, really a breezeway? I'd call it a curved gallery: a breezeway should have walls on two opposite sides, no? - Jmabel ! talk 17:28, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
      • @Jmabel: No, I'm talking about this: "【新北景點】平溪。菁桐。十分一日遊 (32364413620).jpg". A public walkway runs through the first floor of the school building.--Kai3952 (talk) 06:48, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
        • As I said, that's a breezeway. - Jmabel ! talk 16:00, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
          • @Jmabel: I am still confused about what this photo("File:0 Seneffe - Galerie palladienne (1).JPG") shows. In my opinion, the breezeway should be designed like what this photo("【新北景點】平溪。菁桐。十分一日遊 (32364413620).jpg") shows. Could you please explain why why two photos shows that the breezeway is a different design?--Kai3952 (talk) 19:04, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
            • As I said above (in a remark I specifically said was not about what you were asking), I don't think File:0 Seneffe - Galerie palladienne (1).JPG belongs in this category. But that's not the one you asked about. The one you asked about belongs in the category. - Jmabel ! talk 19:37, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
              • Do you mean this sentence: "asked in general, not directed to Kai"?--Kai3952 (talk) 15:29, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
                • Yes, but we are really digressing. The one you asked about is a breezeway. - Jmabel ! talk 16:04, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

POTY Voting requirements[edit]

I have been using wikipedia for a long time now, and was editing without an account during that time. Now, I made a new account last year, and started editing on that. I enjoy photography so I was going to vote for the picture of the year. But I only have 50 or so edits, so I can't vote. I don't understand why you need to have so many edits to be able to vote, this makes the voting population pretty small. Since the point of the edit quota is presumably to prevent vandalism or vote spamming, maybe this requirement should be decreased to 20-30. That is my suggestion. Please reply to this on my talk page. Thanks! shibe

The criterion was designed to limit POTY participants to more or less regular Commons contributors. Ruslik (talk) 20:13, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Color fix request on a flag by a user[edit]

Hi. A user requested to fix the colors of this flag, but used {{rename}} tag. I reverted the edit (invalid criterion. note: corretta means "correct"), but I haven't found a tag template for this kind of requests: I tried {{fix}}, but it seems it doesn't work. Does anybody know what's the right template for this requests?

Anyway, translating from Italian, I understood (more or less) user's request: the flag should be 1/3 red, as it is, and 2/3 silver (and it is white). Thanks for attention: as filemover, I wouldn't simply revert a valid request using wrong template, but offer assistance/solution whenever possible (btw, I really dunno what are the correct colors of this flag). Regards. --Dэя-Бøяg 19:17, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Trailer from Trump-Kim summit[edit]

Hello there,

I would like some guidance over whether the trailer shown during the Trump-Kim summit counts as PD-USGov.

I'm not sure if all of the scenes in the movie were produced by the White House.

--RaviC (talk) 21:52, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

@RaviC: We may not host it because Facebook's licensing terms are inconsistent with ours, and there is significant doubt as to the PD nature of every frame in that video, as well as the music.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 10:14, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Korea, Daegu Page Banner[edit]

Hello,

I am trying to change the banner of Daegu page https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Daegu I try upload on upload wizard but it is not getting through. Please help.

Best Regards, Daegucity.kr (talk) 02:40, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

  • What filename were you trying to upload to? which I've fixed.
  • What error message (or if no error message, what behavior on failure) did you get? - Jmabel ! talk 03:59, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
  • File:Daegu banner.jpg looks like it uploaded fine; the template content was a bit of a mess, which I cleaned up. However, it does not look as if the image is indeed extracted from the photo you say it is extracted from: they don't seem to resemble each other. What is the actual source? - Jmabel ! talk 04:06, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
@Daegucity.kr, Jmabel, Ypsilon from Finland: I found and documented the source.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 04:34, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Hello,

Thank you for cleaning it up. The photo of the temple was not the one I uploaded.

I have just upload the photo

@Daegucity.kr: Your upload is the wrong size, it should be exactly 2,100 × 300 pixels. Unable to edit pages using edit API request[edit]

Hello. I wrote a python script to edit my own image description using the API. I can login, get edit token, and try to edit section 1 (that contains the description). Often I get "no such section error". Sometime this error doesn't occur, and I get a success message for the edit; but I can still see no changes. The "text" parameter I pass has the same structure as commons has in its edit box, as below;

"

This is a final description for my file that I will test

Am I missing some convention? Why do I get success response and see no edits made? Please help

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 05:15, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Kuloping1 (talk • contribs) 06:21, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
  • @Kuloping1: You don't mention what country, which will certainly be needed to answer that question. Assuming, though, that they are presumably unpublished pictures with unknown photographers, I suggest that you ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright where there is more likely to be someone with the expertise to answer. (If they are from the U.S. and were published near the date they were taken, this is easy: {{PD-US}}. And if they are from the U.S. and were taken by federal government employees, then it is also easy: {{PD-USGov}}. But other cases will differ. Unpublished photos by unknown photographers can raise tricky issues.) - Jmabel ! talk 16:20, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

Deletion Request[edit]

Hi, I nominated the following file for deletion [1]. It is my own work and not used anywhere. When would it be deleted? Are you waiting for any further info from my end?

Thanks, Nittavinoda (talk) 12:09, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

  • You uploaded this 2 months ago with an irrevocable license. While we normally extend the courtesy of allowing about a week for someone to change their mind (especially to deal with accidental uploads) I personally don't see a basis for deletion here. - Jmabel ! talk 16:23, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel:, I was under the impression that we could nominate unused pictures for deletion ({{subst:prod}}. Why would this nomination not fall under that category? Nittavinoda (talk) 06:34, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
You can nominate it, but it's unlikely to be deleted. {{subst:prod}} is an English-language Wikipedia thing, not on Commons, but if you want to nominate it for deletion, depending on how you are set up you probably have a "nominate for deletion" button on your left nav; if not, you can directly use {{delete}} and follow the directions. But, as I say, I believe it is unlikely to be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 09:36, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

  • Probably part of why you are finding Commons intimidating for this purpose is that we don't have any "articles" on this site. Perhaps you are looking for the English-language Wikipedia? In that case, try en:Wikipedia:Your first article. (Commons and Wikipedia are umbrella'd by the same foundation, and use the same technology, but Commons is a media repository, not a host for articles.) - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

File:Passing Storm (453598638).jpg[edit]

It looks like one, but if there are subtle differences between sub-categories it's usually better to use the master category and let someone more knowledgeable about the subject sort it out, this happens all the time with the taxonomy of species on Wikimedia Commons. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 22:38, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

The file itself appears to have an error. At least on my screen, it loads only the upper third of the image. The solution would have been to upload the correct image again under the same name (using the new upload link ander the image version table). However, the image has already been uplodaed under a new name as File:Water Lily Photographed by Trisorn Triboon.jpg. The image named above should therefore be deleted. This may be done by a speedy-deletion using
{{speedy|damaged file, replaced by [[:File:Water Lily Photographed by Trisorn Triboon.jpg]] --~~~~}}
Il set the deletion request into the file description page. --Bjs (talk) 13:17, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Category-page refresh-bug?[edit]

Hi, I can open this file which i uploaded in a batch of 40 today. But clicking the category it is in, I don't see my new batch apear in the category. I deleted the whole site from my cache, and checked the cat page in another browser to no result. Is this a known serverside bug? Or what could I try, to solve it on my end? Peli (talk) 19:43, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

That's very curious. I made a null edit of the file page (go to edit page and publish without changing anything) and the problem has gone away. This kind of problem is common when templates are involved, but I've never noticed it happening with a directly-applied category. I suspect it's a similar problem though. The record of category members is being updated slowly or not at all, and the null edit provides an opportunity for the update to occur. --bjh21 (talk) 20:01, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

Image not showing up in its category[edit]

The image File:Baldham, Lager archäologische Staatssammlung, 2.jpeg is in Category:Staatsatelier Thorak but when I open the category it does not show up there. I purged both the category and the image but that did not help. How is that possible? Any hints are appreciated.

By the way, selecting “purge” from the category menu seemed to do just a mere reload. Only when I appended “?action=purge” to the URL I was prompted to confirm the purge. -- Renardo la vulpo (talk) 11:51, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Purging doesn't usually fix this kind of problem. Doing a null edit (edit/save image page without changing anything) does. --Magnus (talk) 11:56, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
I also sometimes used a null edit on the category page (edit/save the category page without changing anything) to fix a problem that could not be resolved by purge. --Bjs (talk) 13:07, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. The image now appears in the category though I didn't do anything (the history shows no edits – maybe null edits are not listed). Pelikana (see two sections above) seems to have had a similar problem. -- Renardo la vulpo (talk) 14:52, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

      • I personally am not confident of my ability to download this possibly unsafe content without harm. Can someone with the relevant skills look into this? - Jmabel ! talk 17:24, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
        • I think that is secure because my antivirus didn't detected anything and the online scan nether. And is opening normally, so I don't know what is happening. And is really, is better anyone that has knowledge opens it. Mr. Fulano! Talk 18:13, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
  • I've had a look at it. The monster "data" URI is really there, and is what holds the background image. It's exactly the same as the one in the existing English file. I suspect the problem is that it's in BMP format, which Commons certainly wouldn't allow outside an SVG file. I converted it to PNG, which worked, and I've uploaded it to File:Symptoms of Meningitis - PT version.svg, but while it looks fine in Inkscape the previews on Commons are broken. I'm not really very good with SVG (plus it's quite late here), so maybe someone else can take a look. --bjh21 (talk) 23:33, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
    • I don't know what is causing this problem, because when I open on Wikimedia Upload, this work normally. I'll try fix it. Mr. Fulano! Talk 23:38, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Extended footnotes[edit]

Sometimes footnotes extend from the foot of one page onto the foot of the next (I have even seen them run to three pages). However, I am not aware of any means of combining them. I have such a one on "Sarah Sheppard - L. E. L.pdf/76" running onto "Sarah Sheppard - L. E. L.pdf/77". At the moment, I have used another ref /ref at the top of page 77, so the two notes will run one after the other. However, the two halves will inevitably have consecutive footnote numbers in the finished work and, as the break is mid-sentence, the text will be disjointed. As this is a fairly common occurrence, I am wondering if there is a fix for this that combines the separate parts of a single note. It is also possible there might be a hyphenated word but thank goodness I don't have this problem at the moment! Esme Shepherd (talk) 20:59, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Esme Shepherd,
Which page are you talking about? Is it on Wikisource or Wikipedia? We don't use much footnotes on Commons, and you haven't create any page with footnotes here. Regards, Yann (talk) 21:11, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Esme Shepherd (talk) 15:38, 18 June 2018 (UTC) Sorry, I think I have found the solution in the help pages for Wikisource, i.e. Advanced:Footnotes that continue over page breaks. I have now used ref name="p76" in line with its instructions.

One minor issue though: to force the printer markings to the foot of the page (on page 77), i.e. below the footnote, I have had to put them into a ref /ref as well. As this will disappear in the final product, I don't suppose this matters.

Jmabel: If it happened recently, I'd suspect that Sarang's recent edits at {{Created with Hugin}} and/or {{Created with ...}} might have something to do with it (or that Sarang might at least have an idea of what's wrong, having worked with those templates). The latter has some of the most "impressively" obfuscated template syntax I've ever seen. LX (talk, contribs) 16:48, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
Sorry about your irritation! There is nothing wrong - except that the template collects all non-SVG files in that category, which has a name a bit misleading in the case of the JPG files created with Hugin. I hope that it is not a too large problem to you -- sarang사랑 17:56, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
The category contains 51 PNGs and 5211 JPEGs. How is that "nothing wrong"? LX (talk, contribs) 19:08, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
Ok, I changed it; now all files with the template are again in Created with Hugin, together with the "hard" categorized ones. -- sarang사랑 11:50, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Countable and uncountable sets[edit]

I am interested in publishing an article that redefines the set of irrational numbers and explores the possibility of sets that are "higher" than uncountable.

unpublished antique photographs[edit]

I collect unpublished antique photographs over 100 years old. These are NOT of famous people. Do I own the copyrights? How can I contribute some of them to articles?
— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mark T. Wright (talk • contribs) 17:21, 18 June 2018‎ (UTC)
@Mark T. Wright: Where were they taken? When did the photographers die?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 17:29, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
Mark T. Wright: Unpublished works can be quite tricky depending on the country of origin (which itself can be tricky to establish for unpublished works). For works from the United States, {{PD-US-unpublished}} applies if the author died before 1948; if the death date of its author is not known, and the work was created before 1898; or if it is an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, and it was created before 1898. Such works will be in the public domain and therefore do not have a copyright holder. For other countries, see Commons:Copyright rules by territory. In some countries (particularly European ones), publishing a previously unpublished work may entitle you to publication rights. LX (talk, contribs) 17:40, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Update photo[edit]

I made this photo File:Legislation Terminology Map.png and uploaded it to my old account. There is a typo in it and need to update it but I can't overwrite it so could an admin do it. The font size was 8. ImprovedWikiImprovment (talk) 21:12, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

@ImprovedWikiImprovment: Why are you using two accounts?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 01:57, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
@ImprovedWikiImprovment: The only reason you can't overwrite it is that your account is too new to be autoconfirmed. I think it will become autoconfirmed tomorrow, so you could just wait. Alternatively, you can request the "confirmed user" right at Commons:Requests for rights. --bjh21 (talk) 15:42, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

File:Beautiful sunset in Taidong beach.JPG[edit]

Please take a look at "File:Beautiful sunset in Taidong beach.JPG". Taitung is a county in the southeast part of Taiwan, west side facing the mountain range and east side facing the sea. Obviously this file seems to be "illogical", it should be sunrise. What I don't understand is why it was added "Sunsets" category?--Kai3952 (talk) 12:40, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Why is Taiwan not allowed to have "Category:Snowy cityscapes in Taiwan", "Category:Snowy landscapes in Taiwan", and "Category:Snow in Taiwan"?[edit]

Auntof6 always opposed me to create "Category:Snowy cityscapes in Taiwan", "Category:Snowy landscapes in Taiwan", and "Category:Snow in Taiwan". In fact we need to put it in the category because we have the photos of snow scenes in Taiwan. I have discussed with him(see: "here"), but he just don't want to hear. What do you think I should do?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:15, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

@Kai3952: The linked discussion says nothing about Category:Snowy cityscapes in Taiwan or Category:Snowy landscapes in Taiwan. As far as I can see it's entirely about whether "snow" categories should be subcategories of "winter" categories. In the absence of any explanation of why the categories shouldn't exist, I'd suggest that you create and populate them. I presume they were speedily deleted in May for being empty, so as long as they're populated there should be no problem recreating them. --bjh21 (talk) 15:37, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
I don't remember specifically what, if anything, was in the cityscape and landscape categories. It might have been that Category:Snowy cityscapes in Taiwan didn't contain actual cityscapes -- not every photo of a city is a cityscape. Likewise, not every photo outside of a city is a landscape. I'll watch these categories: if/when they get populated, that might remind me what the issue was. --Auntof6 (talk) 15:54, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
Auntof6 seems to have fixed ideas about countries he doesn't know much about. His view of countries like Category:Pakistan don't always fit into his idea of how categories "should" be. I had this trouble with him, and he used Category:Japan as an example of how categories "should" work for Pakistan. Japan and Pakistan cannot be compared: Pakistan has existed only since 1947 and a multitude of languages are spoken there, unlike Japan. I don't think certain categories should be forced on countries for which they do not work by those who seem not to understand the particulars of that country. Mad Pride[edit]

Hello,

I started to write a section on Mad Pride called Mad Pride Flags. I saw it when I was editing on my cell but now on my laptop, it is gone. Also, I had an image that I had created when I worked for the NJ Self-Help Group Clearinghouse and I was informed that it was flagged as a possible copywrite infringement. The image had all of the mad pride flags that had been submitted. Have I lost my work altogether or is it awaiting approval?

thanks in advance,

Michael

MichaelAdamReale: The question above is your account's first and so far only edit on any Wikimedia project.
There was an edit made to en:Mad Pride over at English Wikipedia earlier today made without the use of an account, which sounds like what you are describing above. That edit was reverted by a bot which reverts edits containing links in ways that are against English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines such as en:Wikipedia:External links. If you have questions about that, you should ask them over at English Wikipedia.
As for the image you tried to upload here on Commons, your upload was stopped by a filter that prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload form that you used. The reason for this is that those overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. Since you describe the image as containing works created by other people, it would seem that the image was not indeed your own work, which would mean that the filter worked as intended. How can I know which are the correct rights to post pictures of a company[edit]

I'm posting pictures of beer bottles and its manufacturer's plants but I do not know how to post them according to the proper usage. Can anyone assist me with this?
— Preceding unsigned comment added by CamiloYepesABI (talk • contribs) 17:11, 19 June 2018‎ (UTC)
@CamiloYepesABI: Did you take the pictures yourself? Regards, Yann (talk) 17:14, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
CamiloYepesABI: Only the legitimate copyright holder(s) can give an appropriate permission for publication. In the case of photos of buildings, the copyright holders will most likely be the photographer (or the photographer's employee). In the case of pictures of bottles, the copyright holder will most likely be the photographer (or the photographer's employee) and the company holding the copyright of the bottle labels (see Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Product packaging), meaning permission from both is required. For information on how to obtain and submit an appropriate permission from the copyright holder(s), see Commons:OTRS. LX (talk, contribs) 17:20, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for your replies, I haven't mastered yet how to comment, so I'll just edit ths in:

I actually work for the company and am not sure how to work it out. Also, I have received some errors while uploading the pictures stating that the image was previously updated and I should check on the history of that particular item. By any chance, do you know how to get there?

If you are authorized by a company to upload materials on its behalf, see COM:OTRS for how to let Commons know about that. - Jmabel ! talk 15:41, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Picture of award trophy allowed?[edit]

Can one upload a picture taken of a film award trophy still in use, or does that violate copyright? VerifiedCactus (talk) 00:24, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

  • "Still in use" has nothing to do with whether it is in copyright, but most such things are copyrighted. Can you provide a link to a file (not on Commons) that shows the sort of trophy you are referring to, so that someone can say something more definitive? - Jmabel ! talk 15:42, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Well, I would think one obvious example would be [2] which is uploaded at en.wp and used under fair use. The organizations that issues such trophies generally have strict rules about their recreation so I would say it’s unlikely any such image could be uploaded to Commons. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:15, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Right, I was just wondering if the particular one this user wants to upload might turn out to be {{PD-ineligible}}. - Jmabel ! talk 06:37, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Trophies are generally statuettes and indeed eligible for copyright protection. You may find User:Elcobbola/Awards#Trophies,_statuettes,_and_figurines helpful. Эlcobbola talk 01:19, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Reverting the map Natively Vietnamese-speaking areas.png[edit]

I cannot revert the upload version of this map Natively Vietnamese-speaking areas.png [3] by User Satoshi Kondo. This map is obviously incorrect because there is zero Vietnamese speaker in Hainan island and Guangdong, and very few in Houaphanh Province, Laos. This map clearly exaggerates the Vietnamese-speaking area to include a substantial territories of Gungdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and Laos.

I would like to revert this map back to the version by User Nguyen1310 uploaded at 22:48, 9 February 2015, but I couldn't. Please revert this map to its previous version. Thanks. Bookworm8899 (talk) 11:16, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

@Bookworm8899: What happens when you try to revert the file? You're autoconfirmed, so you should be able to replace existing files. --bjh21 (talk) 11:23, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
@Bjh21:Thanks for your quick response. After reverting this map, I did not see it returned back to its expected version, that is the version created by User Nguyen1310 uploaded at 22:48, 9 February 2015. Moreover, there was a user named FogueraC reverted my edit. Bookworm8899 (talk) 11:29, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
@Bookworm8899: Aha! I've worked out what happened. In Mediawiki, the contents of the file and the page describing the file are versioned separately. You reverted the description, but you wanted to revert the file itself. To revert the file, scroll to the bottom of the file page and you'll find a section labelled "File history". That shows the history of the file (and not of the description). If you click "revert" in the left column by the version you want to revert to, that will revert the contents of the file to that version (and leave the description alone). Is that clear? --bjh21 (talk) 11:34, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
@Bjh21:Thanks Bjh21, I have just done so and it works. However, I'm afraid that some other user would revert my edit, so I am going to start a new topic in the Talk page of this article to explain the reason. Bookworm8899 (talk) 11:40, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Uploading url to Wikipedia Commons[edit]

I have been editing the article on The Cathedral of the Transfiurgation, and needed a waiver to use material from the Cathedral's website, www.cathedralofthetransfiguration.com). Three months ago, the copyright owner of that website emailed a copyright waiver for the website and was asked today to provide the url for the file uploaded to Wikipedia Commons. How do I upload the website url (http://www.cathedralofthetransfiguration.com) to Wikipedia Commons?

OTRS e-mail templates[edit]

Hello 👋🏻 everyone I have a question,

I've heard from Bob Reis of the website Anything Anywhere that when I asked him to give me permission to use his images on Wikimedia Commons and extend his rights to be commercially used and edited by others through the standard Commons:Email templates that he had to upload all of the images I requested, he told me that he took two hours and that categorisation was required, I haven't used the e-mail templates thing myself but are people required to upload all of their images to this wizard in order to give OTRS permission? If so then this would explain why I've received a lot less positive feedback since proposing it. Or maybe I'm simply not advising it properly enough to my correspondents, any advice regarding that? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 16:45, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

  • If the content is already online somewhere, and if the intent is for someone else (you, in this case) to upload, and they want to use that form, all they need to do to identify the scope is to provide URLs.
  • If the material is not already on line, obviously it is a little trickier to indicate the intended scope without somehow uploading pictures. They could, however, send thumbnails, or a PDF or ZIP file of thumbnails, or whatever else is convenient to indicate the intended scope.
  • More broadly, if they know and trust you, then they could make a broader authorization, e.g. that you have general permission to upload on their behalf; they could either specify a license for you to use, or (I believe, less sure on this) leave it up to you to select the license on their behalf. - Jmabel ! talk 21:07, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Christina Warinner. messed up on her image[edit]

Hello,

I needed an image of Christina Warinner for a Wikipedia biography that I am writing. I searched Wikicommons for an image, found one. I could see that it came from a Flickr photo with permission 2.0 Attribute. I needed to crop the image for a portrait for the bio, so I downloaded, cropped the original image and uploaded the crop with "crop" in the file name.

Somehow I deleted "crop" somewhere along the way, and I think my cropped image wiped out the original image. Could you recover that original image of Christina Warinner TED talk? thanks MauraWen (talk) 22:35, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

MauraWen: I don't know where you found a photo as I can't find one her, so please provide the file name. I assume you are asking about File:Christina Warinner TED talks.jpg that you uploaded. You did not provide a url for that image but I found it and unfortunately we do no accept images with commercial or derivative restrictive licences. I've tagged it for deletion so you will have to try and find a freely licenced image instead. Ww2censor (talk) 22:59, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Ww2censor: thanks for explaining that to me and the quick response. MauraWen (talk) 23:03, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: "For photo inquiries, including high resolution images, captions, and photo credits, please contact Dr. Christina Warinner (warinner shh mpg de)." You could ask her to send a nice picture she owns the rights for to OTRS. I assume you already made sure she meets notability requirements for Wikipedia? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 05:55, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Thanks for the advice. Warinner is one of the red listed women that I am working on as part of the Women in Archaeology Task Force. She meets notability requirements. I have requested photos from biography subjects previously. I usually don't get a response or I get sent photos I have trouble uploading to Wikicommons because the owner did not provide all the required information. I wish it was easier, images are a great addition to Wikipedia biographies MauraWen (talk) 06:06, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: You could also ask her to put a photo she owns the copyright for on her own website with CC BY(-SA) license/notice. That may be less cumbersome (and surely faster) than OTRS. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:24, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Thanks! That is a great idea. I have requested photos and permission info to be sent to OTRS before. A few people have been interested, but share with me that they are too busy or its just too much trouble to do that, that is why I usually end up with their photo and incomplete information for successful upload. I will try what you suggest. Where do I learn more about "CC BY (-SA)"? and how to describe that to someone I contact? Images and their copyrights are very confusing to me. Still learning. MauraWen (talk) 06:40, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
@MauraWen: You can send a link to https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/ for that. For Commons, they must pick CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA, the other variants are not accepted here. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:47, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

How to redirect an image[edit]

I've heard that if two files are the same, one should be redirected to the other. How is this done? These two files are exactly the same:

Kalbbes (talk) 23:54, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

    • If you are anything less than sure about how to do this, just use the {{duplicate}} template and let someone else take care of following up. - Jmabel ! talk 02:45, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Additional question about redirect:

One is slightly smaller than the other. Kalbbes (talk) 00:32, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

    • Clearly two photos from the same sequence, but equally clearly not the same photo. - Jmabel ! talk 02:46, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Category:Shen'ao Cape[edit]

Do you consider a cape to be a "place"? Because none of the photos in the category shown a cape. If anything, then it should be like "this"! All files put in the category are photos of a cape.--Kai3952 (talk) 01:46, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

  • If, for example, you are on top of a headland or cape, obviously it looks very different than if you are seeing it from water or from distant land. - Jmabel ! talk 02:48, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
