Hello, Hpeterswald!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

US Navy photos[edit]

Hi, When you upload photos from US Navy websites (such as File:HMAS Anzac (FFH 150) is underway alongside a dhow in the Gulf of Aden..jpg and File:HMAS Sydney (FFG 03) during Pacific Bond 2013 (2).jpg) please remember to include a weblink to the source. Without this it's very hard to use the images in Wikipedia articles as the copyright status can't be easily verified. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 10:43, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

AACTA Awards 2014[edit]

I attended the AACTA Awards 2014 and was one of the photographers in the Photo Pit with media accreditation grated by Niki White the PR company for The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards.

File:Lara Bingle and Sam Worthington on 2014 AACTAS Awards red carpet.jpg

The original download of this file contains the full EXIF file with my details. Hpeterswald (talk) 05:18, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That isn't a problem, but you should give permission (via OTRS) for Commons to use this sort of work as it is extremely similar to, if not the same as, images posted elsewhere with copyright notices, which is why this was tagged. When you upload images, be sure to put in the permission box after you file an OTRS request. This will keep it from being deleted prematurely. On another note, when you upload pictures of people and the subjects are identifiable and still alive you should also include the Personality rights template in the summary section. Thank you, The Haz talk 06:45, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I have applied to OTRS

How can I add if the file has been deleted and I cant upload the same photograph ? Hpeterswald (talk)

Request the user that deleted it to restore it. You can't request OTRS for it until it is restored anyway. The Haz talk 08:31, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You requested speedy deletion because the image was identified as copyright Getty images. However, I do not see why you thought that. The photographer claims it is not true. I've accepted the photographer's word. Do you disagree?--Sphilbrick (talk) 21:45, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to add that it is not true that permission via OTRS needs a restore in advance. Many members of the OTRS team (like Sphilbrick and myself) are also administrator at Commons. When we receive a valid permission, we can restore a file and tag it as confirmed. Jcb (talk) 21:58, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just going by what I was told in the past. Since you say it's incorrect, it's incorrect. Also, I wrote that the image was available from Getty images because they list ones that are virtually identical (the photographers were all standing together). There were also similar copyvio images uploaded by other users at the same time. However, this user has since noted that he was in the same location and that they are his photographs for which he submitted an OTRS to clear up any confusion in the future. Simple mistake for which I apologize. The Haz talk 00:04, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, no problem. Jcb (talk) 17:29, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Image of F35 mockup, 2014[edit]

Re: File:F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter Mockup on display at Centenary of Military Aviation 2014.jpg

I noticed this image in w:Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. I downloaded it and wanted to edit it a bit. In doing so, I noticed that the image, as uploaded, had some issues which are best solved by obtaining a version of the image earlier in the creation process than exists in the file on commons, if such a version exists. The specific issues are A:what appeared to be artifacts introduced in the demosaicing process; and B:jpeg compression artifacts. Given the lack of Exif data in the file, I was unable to determine what camera was used to take the picture, and thus whether it was even possible that there might be a version which does not have these issues. However, the histogram of the image implied that some processing had already been performed. Given the level of what appears to be ISO noise, I am not expecting there to be a RAW format version available. I was wondering if you might have a version of the image which is either in RAW format (preferred), or one that is not jpeg compressed to quite such an extent.

If you are wondering what type of edits I was making, aside from image quality enhancement, I found a crop to using only the lower 2800 pixels to be more appealing (less uninteresting sky, and puts the nose of the plane almost exactly at 1/3 below the top of the image). I will upload a version which only has this change so you can take a look at it.

Thanks. Makyen (talk) 17:30, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great Job, It was actually before sunrise and the flash failed to go off :( Hpeterswald (talk) 23:43, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have uploaded another version which has been processed a bit. Lots of trade-offs. See if you like it, free free to revert it.
From your comment, I have assumed that there no other version of this image exists which is closer to what was actually on the sensor (i.e. no RAW image, nor an image which has not been as compressed by JPEG). Having a version which is closer to what the sensor saw would help considerably. Among other things, there is clearly some color shifting which has occurred (e.g. excessive blue tint in the dark areas of clouds), for which is difficult to compensate. Basically, a portion of that issue is that the sky just does not look right, particularly for a pre-sunrise shot. This implies that the colors are off in the rest of the image.
BTW: What did you use to take the picture?
Thanks. Makyen (talk) 04:22, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
File:North Korea national football team train for the AFC Asian Cup.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

And:

These images were owned by Media Services AP and so can't be legitimately used under a CC license unless that company releases them as such. They run a business selling licenses so to give a free license is highly unlikely. We will need to find other images to illustrate this building.

Cheers, seb26 (talk) 04:06, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OK, if this account is operated by Hugh Peterswald of Media Services AP, sorry for the confusion above. I've changed the speedy delete notice to a 7-day deletion notice. Could we resolve this please by having you send an email to OTRS, not to give permission for specific files, but to instead say that this account is authorised and is operated by you? See Commons:OTRS#Licensing_images:_when_do_I_contact_OTRS.3F, third item. It will mean that when you make uploads, Commons users will know that you are the rights holder of the photographs and that your free license declarations are valid. The statement would be sent from an email address of yours associated with Media Services AP, and would say "I am Hugh Peterswald and I am the exclusive rights holder of my work, and the files that I upload with the account User:Hpeterswald are genuine actions on my part to release exclusively those works under free licenses." The email is kept private of course. Let me know your concerns if you have any. Cheers, seb26 (talk) 04:21, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wynyard Station[edit]

Hello, I saw this diagram you added to wiki some time ago

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wynyard_Lane_Car_Park_Map.jpg

I've for some months been trying to figure out the orientation of the disused tunnels, and haven't quite been able. Your diagram seems to show the carpark used both tunnels for tracks 1 & 2, though the article seems to say that the west tunnel was used as a shooting range. Let me describe how I've been thinking about the disused tunnels: There are two parallel tunnels on the upper-level of Wynyard station which sit next to (but currently walled off from) platforms and tunnels 3 & 4. All of these tunnels generally extend from the station (and ascend) to the bridge. I know that there was an entrance from Wynyard Lane a block east of the park that then cuts under and directly rest of the park to access the tunnel, and I know that there is an exist along Cumberland Street just south of Essex Street. But the diagram you photographed seems to show TWO tunnels each with seperate exits? Can you describe what we're looking at, here, and if I got anything wrong in my description? --Criticalthinker (talk) 23:49, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hope this helps

Thanks. I've seen both of those and countless other photos and such, but nothing tying it altogether, which is why I was asking you detailed questions specifically. I'll keep searching. --Criticalthinker (talk) 12:15, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, again. I'm writing back as I've still been unable to find photos or diagrams that orient me as to what I'm looking at in all of these photos. Recently, I found these photos:

https://tdu.to/m/97337/tramway-remnants-tour-pt-2

I was able to find out questions to my first questions I asked you, but have a few more. I'm trying to figure out how one would enter and exit the mezzanine and how close to the exit did the tunnels joing so as to let cars out onto the portal on Cumberland. But, anyway, back to the pictures, 1. The first photo is said to be looking down one of the tunnels toward the exit; it would seem that by looking into the background and the markings on the roadway that those are the former platforms which is actually where the carpak is, so we're looking TOWARDS the car park and away from the exit, correct? 2. In the second picture, we're looking at the mezzanine access it is said, but the photo of the diagram you posted - and from photos I've seen - the mezzanine is actually in the upper tunnel and this clearly shows it at D3 which is in the lower tunnel. What exactly are we looking at?

What would really help is perhaps a hand-drawn diagram to show the full layout of the car park. It is all so confusing, and I want to be able to better describe the various locations of the car park relative to the old tram platforms and tunnels better in the article on Wynyard Station. --Criticalthinker (talk) 08:35, 23 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
