First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Hemithea aestivaria ?[edit]

Hello and thank you for your beautiful photo. i am french, sorry my english is not very goog. I would like to ask you a question : are you sure that this photo is : Hemithea aestivaria (in europe, it is not exactly this form (ex : http://www.entomart.be/nouveaux/NEO-0254-Hemithea.jpg ), and the color of legs are also different, and abdomen is brown.. thank you for your answer. (was this photo made in india ? in what region ?)

Hi Lamiot Yes this is Hemithea Aestivaria and this was identified as the Emerald by local experts before it was uploaded to the wiki. This is a very regular moth found near the forested areas and is attracted to fluorescent light in homes. This picture was taken in Mumbai at my own house

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Grammodes geometrica or Trigonodes hyppasia ?[edit]

Hello Ravivaidya

I am uploading Lepidoptera plates from Cramer and Stoll. See plate 250 D (Grammodes geometrica) and E (Trigonodes hyppasia).
Your photos of Grammodes geometrica (File:Grammodes geometrica.jpg and File:Grammodes geometrica1.jpg) could be misidentified, they look more like Trigonodes hyppasia, see pics at Barcode of Life.
What do you think about it? I'm not a lepidopterist, so maybe I'm wrong.

Hello Ravivaidya - do you have a photo locations for File:Aethopyga vigorsii 1.jpg and File:Aethopyga vigorsii 2.jpg, please? Locations would help determine the subspecies involved (it seems the various subspecies are likely to be split into several species in the near future). Hi, I'm working on an educational videogame with which I'm trying to build a bridge between animal awareness and Pokemon fans among others. Also, because I want to make sure there's no misunderstanding, you are the original photographer correct? It sometimes happens that another person simply takes a picture from somebody else and uploads it to wikipedia with a license to distribute. That is why I'm asking.
