File:May 1977 Boys Life.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Wofford College Catalog 1915-16.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Article from publication dated before 1923. I have added site reference. In the "trying to learn" mode with this wiki article. Would prefer, and I am requesting that of a more experienced editor can help fix my lack of technical knowledge. If there is a blatant - unfixable - case of copyright violation, of course it should be deleted. But in this case, between it already being in the public domain, and published before 1923 I don't think it is a violation. If what I have done to fix still does not meet a technical threshold, then I am requesting assistance to help fix versus deletion. Thanks. SandHills (talk) 19:36, 31 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) This image needs a real source, "own work" isn't right for old images... Leave me messages on my talk page for more help. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:15, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) There's three images here. In future please upload only one image at a time. Note that they're obviously from printed sources & none are own work, they're all too old. They need real sources. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:17, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) The text on the marker is copyright because it's post 1977. This one is likely to vanish, so transcribe the text from it, you can still cite it in the Wiki article, you just can't have a photo of it. Nor can you copy the text directly into the article as that would also be a (c) violation. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:20, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Here the issue is in the age of the photos not being likely to be own work. As above, photos need sources and proper licenses to be kept on Commons. And to avoid hitting SAVE again on this thread, the one below which is a screenshot from somewhere of a poem, needs proper source and the license from whoever wrote the poem, unless it can be proven to be Public Domain. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:22, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ellin Beltz and James Woodward[edit]

Many different sources of these photos. For example, the picture of the road marker - I personally took, so I believe that should be an easy fix rather than addressing it as " This one is likely to vanish, so transcribe the text from it, you can still cite it in the Wiki article, you just can't have a photo of it. Nor can you copy the text directly into the article as that would also be a (c) violation". Other photos were taken long ago by persons unknown, with no copyright license - and were some taken from public sources on the internet which I will cite. Again, please give me some specific workarounds for each photo issue. Again I feel I am being put in a position on defending a negative - especially where there is no specific copyright license what it the acceptable wikipedia code for using the photo? I would always be more than glad to delete any photo that is in violation of any copyright licensing protocol - and even where there is none, if the originator/owner of a photo comes forward to object to it's use I would immediately delete. I am a person who will readily admit when they are in deep water - and in the case of all these photos being nominated for deletion, I feel I am chasing my own tail to come up with a copyright license when there are none. But I will go back and try and more clearly define/cite the source I used - even if on a couple it really means just an old photo out of a shoe box. Sincerely, I would like some advice on keeping these photos. Thank you. SandHills (talk) 16:59, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Catalog for CMS.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file ([[:File:Catalog for CMS.jpg]]).

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. Historical markers[edit]

Hello. The file you point is not hosted on Wikimedia Commons, but on the English Wikipedia, where the rules are different. Moreover, the text is shorter and simpler, so maybe {{PD-text}} could apply. Best regards, BrightRaven (talk) 09:11, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

BrightRaven -- the rules are exactly the same for File:Herman_Melville_Historical_Marker.jpg on WP:EN as they are are for the Carlisle marker here. The difference is, as I thought I had carefully and clearly explained to SandHills on my talk page, is that before March 1, 1989, a copyright notice was required on US works. After that date, notice was no longer required. The Herman Melville marker never had a copyright because it was erected in 1953 without a copyright notice. The Carlisle marker may be PD for lack of notice if it was erected before March 1, 1989, but that is unknown now.
As far as the length of the text goes, the USCO is clear that while short phrases do not have a copyright, full sentences do. Although they are short, the Melville marker is three sentences, so it would have had a copyright if it a notice. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 19:37, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
