Pay attention to copyright
Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content. Fair use laws vary from country to country, and uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules.

Also, fair use is only applicable in a few limited contexts. The use of a media file in one context may be considered fair use, while the use of the same file in another context may constitute copyright violation. In particular, fair use does not extend to the collection and distribution of media files in a media database such as Commons. Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions.

Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally to projects which allow this.

No fair use here, thats different to the english Wikipedia. Everything here must be free for free reuse including commercial use by the copyright holders wish and a written permission. --Martin H. (talk) 19:08, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok, thank you. So, if I ask the copyright holders or the owner of this site about permission it would be all right? I'm just very confused, because I can't find free of copyright images anywhere..Thank you. --SlipknotRlZZ (talk) 19:38, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, that are the two options: The image is public domain because or it is licensed under a free license by the copyright holder. You can request a release under a free license Commons:Email templates or a similar wording. --Martin H. (talk) 19:45, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
Thank you very much. Have a nice day. --SlipknotRlZZ (talk) 06:19, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images[edit]

Afrikaans | العربية | беларуская (тарашкевіца)‎ | català | čeština | dansk | Deutsch | Deutsch (Sie-Form)‎ | Ελληνικά | English | Esperanto | español | فارسی | suomi | français | galego | עברית | magyar | íslenska | italiano | 日本語 | ქართული | 한국어 | македонски | മലയാളം | Plattdüütsch | Nederlands | norsk bokmål | polski | português | português do Brasil | română | русский | slovenčina | slovenščina | српски / srpski | svenska | українська | Tiếng Việt | 中文 | 中文(简体)‎ | 中文(繁體)‎ | +/−

Hello, SlipknotRlZZ!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Flickr permissions[edit]

Thanks for contacting me. If the author does not want to change the license on the site itself, then they can e-mail the image to you and include a statement such as "I agree to release the attached image under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution/Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike." Then, you can forward that e-mail to OTRS once you've uploaded the image. For the source, you can state "image e-mailed from author to uploader". I have one author I work with that prefers to use this method instead of changing the license. Just be sure that the author recognizes that the e-mailed permission is the same as changing the license, so if it's released under one of the free licenses, it's going to be able to be used under the licenses' terms. If possible, always try to push for them changing the license as it's easier on the people who approve the permissions and avoids risks of authors not fully stating the license they want to use (stick to something along the above example). Hopefully this is helpful, but let me know if you need further clarification. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 21:07, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Thank you! --SlipknotRlZZ (talk) 18:44, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
If they e-mailed the permission similar to above, then you can upload the images. Then, tag them with . Admins will not delete the images right away and they will stay available for the OTRS volunteer to add the OTRS ticket. Let me know if you need further clarification. --Happy editing! Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Email for pictures[edit]

Hello SlipknotRlZZ, if you have a email with the permission of the use of the image is better to wait then, but if nothing changes the images will be eliminated in future Truu (talk) 09:08, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Hello, Truu. First of all, I appreciate you taking time to look at the images I uploaded. Then, I do have a written permission sent to me via email, which I have forwarded to OTRS. Let's hope it all goes well. I apologize if I have done something wrong. --SlipknotRlZZ (talk) 09:52, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
No problem, a user will probably solve things in future. Truu (talk) 20:57, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

 • If the flickr license is 'All Rights Reserved', then image may need COM:OTRS permission from the copyright owner/author to stay in use on WikiCommons. Goodbye, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:48, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
I put the link to the image itself in the description, there shouldn't be a problem now since the license was and still is Attribution ShareAlike 2.0. --SlipknotRlZZ (talk) 07:34, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
 • Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment: OK. I have removed the no source template in the image and flickrpassed it. The license is correct as you said. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:39, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
