@廣九直通車: So what exactly does wavybabyyeah need to say in this email? I'll forward them this conversation, btw. Thanks. PseudoSkull (talk) 18:09, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a suggested format of an OTRS permission email:

I hereby affirm that I, Wavybabyyeah, am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of the media works:

If the author prefers another language, please inform me. And just a reminder, the file is eligible to be uploaded to Commons if they are free to be used, modified and used in commercial purposes, so releasing the work into public domain is accepted but not necessary.廣九直通車 (talk) 01:09, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@廣九直通車: I have private-messaged the user on Reddit. They will hopefully let me know when the email has been sent. I recommended that it be sent within 7 days. Please wait patiently; please refrain from having the files deleted until the email has been sent. Thanks for your time. PseudoSkull (talk) 02:12, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! And I will do with tagging the files with OTRS pending template in order to notify others.廣九直通車 (talk) 02:14, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@廣九直通車: According to a recent PM on Reddit, wavybabyyeah has sent the necessary email. I have hopes that the email will soon be seen and verified. PseudoSkull (talk) 18:23, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for Wavybabyyeah's generous permission and you liasion work!廣九直通車 (talk) 05:24, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@廣九直通車: It's been quite a while, and the tags have not been taken off. Did you guys get the email? PseudoSkull (talk) 15:18, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The current OTRS backlog is 121 days now due to insufficient volunteers. Therefore, the email may need approximately 4 months for verification, though sometimes will be faster. For the data, you may want to look at Template:OTRS backlog. If you really have questions, you may leave it at COM:ON, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 08:11, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the files are now verified by OTRS volunteers, and they can be used freely in anywhere. Just to remind you that please archive your talk page, rather than deleting the content of it, as defined in COM:ARCHIVE. To archive your talk page contents, please simply add {{subst:User:MiszaBot/usertalksetup}} at the top of your talk page, and a bot would then archive it after 30 days.廣九直通車 (talk) 10:15, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Pay attention to copyright
File:Jar'Edo Wens contributor.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: clearly not "own work" as claimed
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Mighty Mr. Titan[edit]

I wanted to address something you brought up last year. I have two things that you may find informative, both of which I've found in issues of Broadcasting magazine:

1. According to several issues, there were 100 episodes made (an example can be found here), so there must be a bunch of missing episodes, similar to Colonel Bleep.

2. It appears the show dates back to 1964, as shown here and here.

Not sure if either of those help with the "public domain or not" question, but I thought they were worth sharing.

GVO8891 (talk) 21:56, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@GVO8891: Thanks for sharing this with me. Yeah, it's pretty unfortunate that we'll have to wait until I'm middle-aged just to see these old cartoon episodes go into the public domain. Any surviving episodes are now harder to archive because they are copyrighted by somebody who most definitely had nothing to do with the making of the episodes. Hopefully by the time we're advanced enough to spend half or more of our lives in VR, the government won't be so corrupt anymore to have such a monopoly on art. PseudoSkull (talk) 17:37, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PseudoSkull: Thanks for responding. I wasn't claiming that Mighty Mister Titan is still under copyright, at least not intentionally. You said that the show's copyright is defective since no year is listed in the episodes' copyright notices, which I noticed for one such episode. Neither source I gave about its origins in 1964 seem to make any indication about copyright; one happened to be published in 1964, the other mentioned it as part of the show's release date. Unless I'm missing something, I think that means it's in the public domain already. But I could be wrong. GVO8891 (talk) 01:44, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:CityOfFargoLogo.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Gnorm Gnat[edit]

I hope you enjoy the comics. I made a small error and maybe you can help. For the Gnorm Gnat strips (not the Jon and Garfield ones), I messed up my spreadsheet, so the dates in the descriptions are wrong (those in the filenames are the right ones). Would you be to fix this with an automated tool? Otherwise, I'll try to figure it out when I have time. Thanks! D. Benjamin Miller (talk) 09:11, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@D. Benjamin Miller: I wrote a little script to do the trick, and it's running now. They should all be done in about 15 minutes. (Just for reference, I published the code (here.) PseudoSkull (talk) 09:23, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Software used[edit]

Quick question. What software do you use for clips like File:The Battle of the Sexes (1928).webm ? The clips are listed as having duration 0 (or rather unknown). This is because it doesn’t have this metadata available and our software essentially treats it like a stream of a live source. This happens if the YT files are not post processed when stored, which is needed because YT only provides metadata via its api, not in the video. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:52, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TheDJ: Hi, sorry for the belated response, I have been on a Wikibreak which I forgot to note here. So, I use yt-dlp (a fork of youtube-dl) to download the videos and FFMPEG to clip the files before I upload them (to remove the audio or intros, etc.). If the only reason that the files aren't showing up as "having durations" is that the metadata is not correct, then I wonder why Commons doesn't automatically give it the metadata. The file doesn't seem outright broken, though, so I hope it's not a huge deal. I'm not sure how to fix it. SnowyCinema (talk) 03:03, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's not fully broken no, but the metadata parser that MediaWiki uses is unable to determine the file duration. It would have to look at the first sample and the last sample in the file to determine the duration, which it doesn't currently do. So you use something like ffmpeg -i input.webm -ss 01:19:27 -to 02:18:51 -c:v copy -c:a copy output.webm to cut the video ?
A simple remux can fix these files: ffmpeg -i brokenfile.webm -vcodec copy newfile.webm but it's strange that ffmpeg's default editing doesn't seem to do the same as the remux we do... I'm gonna have to look into that. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 15:08, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your revert in File:Phantom of the Opera.webm[edit]

"This version is considerably shorter, meaning there must be content missing."

That's because the print from which the high quality video file uses runs at sound speed (24 frames per second). The original upload, which seems to come from a bootleg print, runs at a frame rate which is lower than the tinted version at 20 fps.

Plus, this version ain't the original release one, which lasted longer and only survives in 16mm reduction prints.

Besides the needlessly long runtime, my justification to overwrite the low quality file comes from the fact that the lecture time on a b&w film is faster than with color (which is my understanding that it distracts the viewer). Mayimbú (talk) 22:04, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mayimbú: I'm not sure I understand, but is there another place that the version you uploaded can be placed, so as not to disrupt current uses of this version? M-le-mot-dit proofread this film, and I'm not altogether familiar with it. Perhaps a versions page could be made at Wikisource, and another, more original version of The Phantom could be proofread, while this "bootleg" version could be separate but stay the same. SnowyCinema (talk) 17:27, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I found a higher quality video this film - [1]. Since you originally uploaded the file, could you upload a new version? OGPawlis (talk) 16:26, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
