First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello Dhatfield!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Dhatfield (talk) 13:23, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Coat_of_Arms_of_Johannesburg_v3.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Protein images[edit]

Hey, thanks for the compliment. All were made from PDB files available here (or here for membrane-associated proteins, though I don't use it as often as I should). Most were made with Accelrys DS Visualizer, but I've been trying to get the hang of PyMOL since late last year and I mostly use Accelrys for molecular models now. There is a dearth of 3D imagery over here, but at least we have plenty of high-quality photography. The heraldry area (a personal favorite of mine) is pretty much covered as well, which I think is quite impressive. I used to be quite handy with Blender, but it's all gone now—shame, I could be helping out with 3D goodness in other areas :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 14:09, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Standard Model of Elementary Particles.svg[edit]

Hi Dhatfield! Your image Image:Standard Model of Elementary Particles.svg seems to be achieving widespread use on Wikipedia. However, the masses in the lepton sector are not correct. Please fix this as soon as possible, or I think we need to remove this image from the articles which link to it. -- 129.57.115.159 18:46, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm on it. Dhatfield (talk) 19:30, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Next time, please follow the link to the Graphics Lab that I placed on the discussion page of every article where I placed the image, and join the discussion of the image there. Thanks. Dhatfield (talk) 19:57, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! And no, I don't have a bot (otherwise the edits would be marked as such), but I am kind of a categorization maniac :P I am sure you'll learn about it soon. Should you have any questions, feel free to ask, I'll try to help as much as I can. Cheers, Waldir talk 22:37, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

why dont you upload the image Image:Plant cell structure svg 2.svg on top of the Image:Plant cell structure svg.svg that way there is no need for 2 images, dont you think? -LadyofHats (talk) 12:18, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Non-public-domain component in M1 Abrams Tank image.[edit]

I found a texture called "Sand" in the M1 Abrams Tank image. It's under CC Attribution license, not public domain as the rest of your image. I put a note in the Wikimedia page to that effect. I think my note satisfies the attribution requirement :-) Please watch out for these, if you have used them in other images the info page for the image should note that they are included, their license, and their source.

On further examination, it may be that this is a stock Inkscape texture, and Inkscape didn't mention its ownership through the GUI, although it put the ownership information in the text of the SVG file. If that's the case, it's probably happening to other image authors too. Bruce Perens (talk) 00:23, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea what Inkscape places in the source automatically, but I can assure you that there is nothing but pure, standards compliant SVG in this image and I certainly did not put a "Sand" texture in it. If you can see it, call me. Wikilawyering is so unattractive. Dhatfield (talk) 22:49, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Google translate:"Hello! I congratulate you on this picture Molecular_Modeling.png, I wondered if I could say which program you made, please write and apology in Spanish, I do not write in English is easy, you had not understood. May you also tell me I could use that program (I like the chemistry and the quality of most 3D images that are of their molecules) to make new images of molecules to contribute to wikipedia and commons ... thanks in advance"
I made this with POVray, after getting the source file from Ed Boas. POVray is very powerful, but takes more time than I have these days. If you are starting out with modelling and rendering I would recommend "Blender", it is probably available in Spanish. Best if luck with your modelling efforts! Schrodinger's cat[edit]

Doug,

I would like to use your figure "Schrodinger's Cat" in a forthcoming book. Can I have your permission to do so, and what is your preferred wording for the attribution?

Thanks,

Orbital diagrams available in SVG?[edit]

Hi Doug, really love your orbital diagrams as shown on [Atomic orbitals]. Do you have them available in SVG, or could I hire you to create 3-D animated SVGs? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lucent (talk • contribs) 23:09, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
