Signature problems[edit]

I'm attempting to figure out what's wrong with your signature. Can you try going to Special:Preferences and ensuring that the "Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link)" box isn't ticked? Cordless Larry (talk) 17:11, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Cordless Larry - it was kind of you to point that out. I have never looked at that page before, but you were right - that box was ticked and now I have unticked it. I hope this resolves the problems I have been having? Arbil44 (talk) 17:22, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like it has worked, yes - thanks for your co-operation. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:30, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
File:Bloxholm Hall from Lost Lincolnshire Country Houses Vol 6 by Robert Pacey.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:01 - Our Asgill Road Trip 13-31 May 2019.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

I don't understand how a Google Maps image can violate copyright laws? Please explain how this is the case. Arbil44 (talk) 14:43, 15 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I had a previous version of the same image up for several weeks without a problem - would it be better to use that previous image? Surely Google Maps is a freely available source for everyone isn't it? I am just going out now - I hope I won't find I am banned from editing by the time I return? deletion[edit]

I candidate both files because of lack of notability, being them unused on personal pages. Please talk about it on relative discussion pages. --Ciaurlec (talk) 12:31, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I hope I am in the right place now? The website I used says that their maps may be used so long as they are credited - and their logo is on the map. This is their website: https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright - I need the map to demonstrate the journey, so may I keep it please? Arbil44 (talk) 12:36, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I am not notable myself, but that journey ended up changing history - so it was the most important journey of my life. Why is there a problem when the website makes it clear their maps may be used? Arbil44 (talk) 12:42, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand the bit about not being used. It is on my userpage, along with the photographs of the journey. It was initially put there for the use of the American press who are now taking an interest and it made it so much easier to explain what I did and where I went. The article will come out in January some time.Arbil44 (talk) 13:50, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have verified the use on personal pages and having no other objections I will try to withdraw the cancellation request. I apologize for the inconvenience. I thank you for your collaboration on en.wikipedia and I take this opportunity to wish you happy holidays. --Ciaurlec (talk) 16:10, 23 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rename request[edit]

In reference to File:14 - With The Rev. Kirstin Miles at Trinity Church, NYC on 29 May 2019.jpg:

Go to the page of the file you want to rename. Near the top right corner of the window, to the left of the search box, is a button that says "More". Put your mouse over it, then click on the "Move" button that appears. A box will pop up asking for details. Enter the new file name in the first text field. Below that, select reason "1. original uploader's request". Underneath that, type out your reason for renaming. Last, press the "Request renaming" button. An admin will eventually approve your request, if it meets Commons guidelines.

Let me know if you have additional questions. :) Nocowardsoulismine (talk) 19:43, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for your helpful and clear guidance on how to deal with this. I have done as you suggested and look forward to a renamed file notification in due course. Arbil44 (talk) 21:33, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:My research trip to America 13-31 May 2019.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Hello Renamed user 8723489273, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:My research trip to America 13-31 May 2019.png

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Yours sincerely, - FitIndia Talk 12:18, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:The Rev. Kirstin Miles with Anne at Trinity Church, NYC on 29.5.19.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. File:Malaita. A Pictorial History from Solomon Islands by Ben Burt p275 - 1962 Tony Hughes, District Officer, records whispered votes at Gwee'abe in Sinalagu, east Kwaio, during the Malaita Council elections.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Arnold Schwartzman's Image[edit]

I uploaded this image File:Arnold Schwartzman’s visit to Gibraltar on 11 June 2008.jpg|thumb|Arnold Schwartzman’s visit to Gibraltar on 11 June 2008 - but I have now had an urgent request from Mr Schwartzman for this image to be deleted. He is not happy about the total inadequacy of his Wikipedia entry and does not want his image on that page. I have removed it from the page, but I am afraid I do not know how to go about doing a total deletion, and very much hope my request here is all that is required of me? Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Major Gordon, 'Periodical Literature' Morning Post Monday 10 November 1834, Column 5.png seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

The reason given by the user who added this tag is: Uploader is not the creator, so can't release under a CC license

Cordless Larry (talk) 06:48, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I never understand the licensing system. Can the license be changed? I find it hard to believe I said I was the creator, since obviously I am not. Isn't it out of copyright after 187 years? Arbil44 (talk) 07:45, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think you might need to make the same change you made here. You should only use the CC license if you were the creator of the image (or have permission of the creator), because it releases the rights to the image held by the creator. Cordless Larry (talk) 08:41, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't remember how to change the license unfortunately. I would, if I could. Arbil44 (talk) 08:49, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If you click on the link I gave above, you'll see that you just changed {{cc-by-sa-4.0}} to {{PD-old-70}}. Cordless Larry (talk) 09:24, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've been clicking all over the place, all morning, trying to find the place where I can insert {{PD-old-70}}. I know I've done it before, but I can't remember how.Arbil44 (talk) 10:02, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You just need to edit File:Major Gordon, 'Periodical Literature' Morning Post Monday 10 November 1834, Column 5.png. Cordless Larry (talk) 10:13, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've given hours to this, and I still don't know how to do it. I've inserted the plus 70 thing, but undoubtedly in the wrong place. Arbil44 (talk) 10:24, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You inserted it in the right place, although you didn't remove {{cc-by-sa-4.0}}. I've done that now. Unfortunately, I think the same issue exists with quite a few other images you've uploaded. Cordless Larry (talk) 10:26, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Could you highlight the other problems Cordless Larry, so that this can all be behind me? Arbil44 (talk) 21:51, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Looking through your uploads, I identified the following that are tagged with CC BY-SA 4.0 licenses but aren't your own work:
I think that's all of them, but I might have missed some. I'm not sure whether the PD-70 license applies to all of these. If there's evidence that the copyright owner of any of them has released them under the CC BY-SA 4.0 terms, then of course they can stay tagged as they are. Cordless Larry (talk) 12:26, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is not in use and can be deleted. File:07 - Hoping to get copyright permission to show the map of Timothy Day's Tavern from 'Summit New Jersey' by Edmund B. Raftis (1996).png
  • This was uploaded to a talk page to prove Sophia's name to Opera hat, and can be deleted: ::*File:Jemima Sophia Asgill's burial entry, St. James's Church, Piccadilly.jpg
  • This is on the wp page for the officer in question, so surely that is covered given it is already on Wikipedia?File:A First Foot Guards Lieutenant and Captain, a contemporary of Asgill, painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1782. Held by The Met Fifth Avenue, NYC.jpg
  • This has been given copyright approval by the Summit Historical Society. File:Colonel Elias Dayton's House in Chatham New Jersey.png
  • The rest relate to The London Chronicle I purchased, from 1782, so presumably out of copyright now.
  • And finally the Mayo Appendix was all the work I went to, to provide Wikisource with Annex 2 of the Mayo book.
  • All this will take a very long time for me to attend to, and it won't be happening today. I have listed those above that I will not be attending to, because they can be deleted, or have copyright permission already, but the others I will, when I can.
  • The Mayo Appendix is particularly upsetting because I belaboured, constantly, when uploading, that it was out of copyright.
  • I actually find it impossible to believe I said that the London Chronicle and the Mayo Appendix were my own work? In fact, for both, I was presented with a choice, "is this your own work" to which I replied "no". So, for all the trouble I went to, now I have this to deal with too. Note to self: Never provide anything more to Commons, EVER.Arbil44 (talk) 12:47, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No, you haven't stated that they're your own work, but they're tagged with CC BY-SA 4.0 without evidence of the copyright holder consenting to that. File:05 - Undated letter (circa 1830s) from Lucy and Mary Ann Mansel to Herbert Mansel, Charles Childs closest sibling.jpg is marked as your own work though. Sorry for any confusion, but I don't think this changes what needs to be done. Cordless Larry (talk) 13:05, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you on the Lucy Mansel one. That happened when I thought that if I had done the scan, which I had, it meant that it was my own work! I will deal with that, the London Chronicle, and the Mayo Appendix. But the others can be deleted, or in the case of Joshua Reynolds' portrait of George Coussmaker, a Lieutenant and Captain in the 1st Foot Guards, 1782. on the CA page (title changed by Opera hat) it is the identical one I uploaded to the AA page. I would have no clue how to deal with this demand when the image is already on Wikipedia and the Met NYC has made it available in the public domain. Arbil44 (talk) 13:14, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the license details on the Reynolds portrait, so that one is now resolved. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:11, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've done them all, but not being able to tick them off, it is hard to know. I did not get copyright permission to use the Raftis map. That one was a temporary stop gap and it can be deleted. What possible misuse could come from the frontispiece? I don't want it, and I cannot imagine anyone else would either. It is not more than 70 years, so I have left it as it is and hope someone will see the stupidity of making a fuss, and just delete it. I think the Dayton house one is very likely more than 70 years, but the Summit Historical Society gave copyright approval, since I do not know its history, (making it a 1951 image, which it looks likely to be) so I've just done what I can with that one. Please, Cordless Larry, try not to find other ways of dragging me back now, unless it is an emergency. I'm desperately busy.
While I'm here, I provided the citation needed on this page, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Taylor_(architect), Ref [6], so if you were able to format the reference for me, that would be helpful.Arbil44 (talk) 22:17, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please delete this photograph as soon as possible. I uploaded it in the genuine belief that I had taken this myself, but I have now found a newspaper article which proves that I did not take this photograph. A copyright violation has therefore arisen, so please delete immediately. I apologise for this mistake, but it was a genuine mistake. Thank you. Arbil44 (talk) 07:43, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Civil War quilt made by Minerva Elizabeth (Mitchell) Hicks c.1863.jpg.

If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

This quilt belongs to my family and has been handed down through the generations since it was made, during the American Civil War, in approximately 1863. It belonged to my late grandmother and was photographed by my late father in approximately 1957. The licence used is Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs, since both my grandmother and father died many years ago. I don't understand the problem. Arbil44 (talk) 15:18, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciate the "George Herming of Solomon Islands Government wrote: I hereby affirm that..." in the source field, but this needs to be confirmed by a direct email from Mr Herming. (If that's already been sent to VRT and you're just quoting it, that's fine, the image will be validated when they confirm receipt of it.) Dear Alfred Neumann
Below, please find the email Trinity Church sent to you giving copyright permission. The reason they were able to give permission was because a Trinity Church employee took the photograph. Simple to deduce, really.
As to it not being the same photograph - that is ridiculous.  All I did was to crop the second image attached by them.  When an image on a Wikipedia page is shown in thumbnail size, it is no good having too much background too (in this case, grass) so I cut their image down to showing just the stanchion itself.  In all other respects, it is their image #2, attached herewith.
A mistake has arisen over the dates on the stanchion, so all this is going to have to be repeated regarding copyright.  I have told Patti Walsh that I am far too old to be able to cope with the copyright issues which Wikimedia constantly persist in presenting, and, when the new image is available, I have obtained Patti Walsh's agreement for Trinity Church to not only give copyright permission once more, for the new image, but to also apply it to the James Gordon Wikipedia page, at the same time removing the one currently showing here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Gordon_(British_Army_officer,_died_1783)
I have already been through three years of stress regarding this matter, since May 2019, and am not well enough to continue with the never-ending-nightmares presented by Wikimedia.  It just never ends.  I no longer feel able to contribute, in future, to Wikimedia, given that I am never ever left in peace when I have. I now have this DIRE WARNING here, telling me that this image may be DELETED: after a three-year struggle to achieve it.
The permission email, sent to you by Patti Walsh, follows and her two images are attached yet again.  Image 2 was cropped by me.
