Hello, Rickstambaugh!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello BotMultichillT,

I have relisted all these images with categories (but perhaps I should delete the old ones?).

I have another newby issue. When I first starting loading images, I put them into four different categories but now want to consolidate them into one. How do I do that?

Thanks, Rick Stambaugh — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rickstambaugh (talk • contribs) 11:43, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Authorship and dates[edit]

I'm a bit confused. For images such as File:El Salvador 4.jpg and File:Argentina stamp type CA1.jpeg, you claim to be the author. Assuming these are legitimate meter images, in what sense are you the author? In particular, you state that you are the copyright holder of these works and are releasing them into the public domain, which doesn't make sense to me. While I agree that these are public domain images, it would seem to me that they are inherently public domain, and there is no copyright; even more certainly, I would think any copyright would be held by the relevant governments, not by you. Further, the dates you give seem to to simply be upload dates or perhaps digitization dates, but based on internal evidence, I would presume that these images are much older (e.g. for the two examples I've given, 1962-02-01 and 1949-09-03, respectively. Perhaps I am misunderstanding the nature of these images, though. Is there some creative element of yours that I'm missing, and in particular one that corresponds to the given dates? - Jmabel ! talk 05:51, 4 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I don't know how to respond to your question so I am just "editing" it. Of course these images of mostly used meter stamps are public domain. I am the author only in the sense that I edited the images to make them clearer, free of extraneous markings, etc.

Rick

 • I do not understand the problem. Why would you or anybody want to delete these images of used stamps? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rickstambaugh (talk • contribs) 00:40, 6 July 2016‎
Seeing as you ask that question you apparently don't understand that the copyright of a stamp remains whether the stamp is used or not. Age since issuance and the death year of the author are the important factors, not usage. Unless these stamps are more than 70 or 80 years old they are still copyright. Please read the details on the deletion nomination page which is the place to comment as other users will be most unlikely to see your comments here. Ww2censor (talk) 22:53, 5 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What about the other hundred thousand stamp images in the catalog?

US meter stamp images[edit]

It would be really useful if you would categorise these images into their individual state categories, where one exists, instead of adding them all to the Category:Meter stamps of the United States that currently has almost 700 images. I've been trying to recategorise those whose state identity is certain and if you have some time maybe you can try to reduce the number there too. I can make the missing state categories if you are not comfortable in doing so. Just ping me. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 09:17, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I see you are continuing to upload new meter stamp images, which is all well and good for the project, but categorising them into the parent category Category:Meter stamps of the United States instead of in their own state categories. Could you please just put them into the correct category in future? Then no one has to go back and change them later. You are making a category choice at upload, so why not just chose the correct state one instead. I would really appreciate you cooperation on this. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 11:11, 14 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You don't understand meter stamp collecting. The state is irrelevant. Nearly every meter stamp design has been used in every state.
If you don't understand meter stamps I wonder why you are uploading all these and just throwing them into a hold-all category. Anyway, that's really beside the point, it does not matter that every state used every design, the parent category is just getting big and we usually make sub-categories, which someone had already started, so I think the bast is to carry on that structure. Most US material gets divided by state, unless you have some better categorising idea. They could also be categorised by design style, either additionally or instead but that's another matter. Unless we change that, for now I have created all the missing state categories, so it would be great if you would categorise any new uploads state-wise. I've reduced the main category down from 700+ to 500-, so there is still a way to go. Thanks for responding. Ww2censor (talk) 07:52, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I understand meter stamp collecting. You, wWcensor, do not. What I do not understand is how to communicate with you directly.
Considering you understand meter stamp collecting then I would expect you to create some useful sub-categories, such by manufacturer, by type of machine and/or by design but maybe you don't think that's a good way of doing it. I suggest that, based on meter machine studies I have, or have seen, as I've only been involved in philately for 35 years, so do have an understanding of this topic, together with a large philatelic library. Someone else started the state sub-category to at least group the stamps into some form and while the state category may now be very useful to you, it at least separates out such large categories into some semblance of order. You are of course welcome to make any categories you think useful to you and other users but for now I again just ask you to please at least use the state categories to keep the parent category within a reasonable size. There will be plenty of non-identifiable images still left on the parent category after that. I must comment on today's uploads that were non-US meter stamps; you just put them into the main parent category "Meter stamps" and not even in their own country categories. I'll be happy to help you work on some more useful sub-categories for the US meters if you come up with some suggestions. To communicate with me just continue to post here as I am watching the page. That keep the topic in one place, so just put a "ping" on the page like this: ww2censor. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 12:02, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome to add categories to any meter stamp images I've uploaded. Please accept that adding the state category does not make sense to me although I accept it may to others. In the future as I add non-US meter stamp images to Wiki I will categorize by county name. I'm sorry I didn't do that from the start.

Thanks for uploading File:France stamp type DB13 actual.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
