Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Hi Whitetararaj! Wikimedia Commons has a rather specific purpose: to collect free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. The free part is very important – it's a founding principle of Commons that we should only host content that is legal for anyone to use for any purpose. This makes Commons quite special, because most of the content you find on the Internet is protected by copyright and cannot legally be used freely. As far as I can tell, just about all of the files you have uploaded have been precisely that: non-free files that you grabbed from the Internet.

For example, File:Choice Paradise.jpg was taken from http://www.panoramio.com/photo/71337187 and File:Dhahrantower.jpeg was taken from http://www.flickr.com/photos/fareedamin/5388202050/. While a copyright notice is not even needed for a work to be protected by copyright, those sources are both clearly marked "© All Rights Reserved", so they're explicitly completely non-free. You must not upload such files to Commons. It's illegal and it goes against everything that Commons stands for. Those who wish to reuse content from Commons should be able to rely on the content we provide to be free and legal to use.

So the majority of your files have been deleted to protect the integrity of the project and to protect you from litigation. I can understand if it is frustrating to have your uploads deleted, but it is in fact in your own best interest.

The reason I nominated File:Manasilayo.JPG for deletion is much less serious. Files hosted on Commons must be realistically useful for some educational purpose. Of all the pages on all of the Wikimedia Foundation's projects, none include this file. Since the image consists only of text, including the text directly on an editable wiki page would almost certainly be preferable to including it by using a heavily compressed JPEG file. That said, I cannot read the text, and if you can explain what the purpose of the file is, please do so at the deletion discussion.

Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to learn more about what this project is about. If you're not willing or able to contribute content that is within our scope, you are of course free to leave, but I would much rather see that you stay and contribute free, educational media.
