COMPLETELY FREE way to convert MP4 to WEBM?

I have been searching all over Commons and the web to find a free way to convert video files into WEBM so I can upload them to Commons. It's like the cool new thing to watch TV right on Wikipedia itself! (Lol jk)

No but seriously I've got all this public domain stuff I want to upload to Commons, and lots of it is video. I have all six Paddy the Pelican (public domain!) episodes from the year 1950 that I need to upload to Commons. This show is a significant part of bad-media history. It MUST be shown.

I don't want to pay 40 bucks just for people to have the basic right to view public domain material freely, as in without paying money for it! That is ridiculous. There has to be a free method to give free material. Can someone help me out there? PseudoSkull (talk) 14:28, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

@PseudoSkull: there are a number of ways to convert video to a free format like webm or ogv listed at Help:Converting video. en:HandBrake, for example, is a popular and free conversion tool. In my opinion, video2commons is the easiest method for uploading public domain or freely licensed videos. It can convert and upload videos to Commons via local upload or directly from video hosting websites, including YouTube and Vimeo. Hope that helps. clpo13(talk) 15:30, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
videoconvert might be a better option for local uploads (that is, not already uploaded to a video hosting site), plus it gives you the option to customize video quality and preview the converted video before uploading it to Commons. clpo13(talk) 15:44, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
I've used Media Coder to make such conversions - http://www.mediacoderhq.com/ Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:02, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Q. Re: uploading a translation of the Chinese Common Program (1949)

I would like to upload a copy of The (Chinese) Common Program (1949) in English. I have proofread it and made it into a standard text similar to the texts available on Project Gutenberg. I am not sure if I can upload it. I am working with a friend of mine to make both the Chinese and English versions available. Is that possible? Drawing

Is it allowed to upload a drawing that I made from a old (1950) photo? The photo itself is probably out of copyright, but it is impossible to find the author of it, so there is no one who can confirm this. I made a drawing of one of the persons on the photo. May I upload this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peter de Schaatser (talk • contribs) 17:31, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

You can, of course, but only if the photo is out of copyright. Ruslik (talk) 20:12, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

svg objects placement problems

I just created my first .svg file in inkscape. When I uploaded it here on commons, objects were not properly oriented. So I returned to inkscape, tried to export it to .png and upload .png version - it worked well. Then I miraculously fixed most of the problems with object placement by saving new version in inkscape, but there is still some black rectangle, what is not visible when I open the file, but that is visible in preview and also visible when I try to export png from svg here on commons. Does anybody know how to fix these problems? Grtek (talk) 17:21, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

Stephen,
You more than anyone else have good pictures of you. I suggest you upload, or contact the author of photos of you to upload here.
Having the option of direct uploading it, you just need to make it available under a free license. Check Special:UploadWizard
If you have to request to a photographer release it under a free license, you just need to follow this steps Commons:OTRS.

How to isolate certain noises in sound files

Hi. Woody Woodpecker's laugh is in the public domain because it is used in Pantry Panic, his only public domain cartoon film. I want to create a sound file of the instance where he does the laugh in this cartoon. The problem is, the noise is intertwined with the sound of the bouncing board. So I want to know how I can edit the sound file so that it takes out the board noise, even though it interlaps with part of his laugh, while still keeping the pure laugh. Is there a way to selectively opt-out of seeing certain (irritating) ad banners?

I keep seeing an annoying advertising banner for the "Community" Wishlist Survey but I can't seem to find a way where I can opt out of any banners that exclusively relate to the Meta-Wiki (where I'm not allowed to contribute ever again) while retaining local banners such as the current one for uploading images related to a city at the Dutch Wikipedia or other local banners. The only opt-out options I see remove all banner ads which is what I don't want. Is there a reason why the Wikimedia software doesn't automatically stop advertising sites users are blocked from? It wouldn't make sense for a user who is locally blocked at Wikimedia Commons to see a banner for the Picture of the Year either. Or should I make a suggestion for this at the Phabricator? Does it already exist? If so, then I am unable to find it. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:21, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Where to promote an image

I have read Commons:Valued_images#Difference_between_valued_images,_quality_images,_and_featured_pictures a few times but I'm still not sure where to suggest that File:Weapons for Liberty WWI poster.jpg get recognition as a particularly useful upload (of my own). Featured is very high-quality, quality images are supposed to be original works by Commons contributors, and valued images are supposed to be very ingenious. I think this is a good image that has utility but it's not clear to me which of these tracks is most appropriate. Help? —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:46, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Question regarding the "vector version available" when it won't match.

So, I've been doing some work over on the English Wikipedia Hazchem page. So the article's header image is an old JPEG diagram of a sign from 2006. It was tagged at some point for upgrade to vector.
However, there's a dilemma, the original image is only sort of what a Hazchem placard should look like. The format is correct of the boxes is correct, but the color, text proportions/size, the radioactive placard are wrong. I made a more accurate version that I intend to replace the current image with, but I don't know that I can call my new one a 'new vector version' of the old file.--The Navigators (talk) 03:40, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Dorothy Richardson

I would like an image of the author Dorothy Richardson to be added to the article on her and require help. I wrote to the Dorothy Richardson Society and received the following advice: "I would use the photo in the title of the Richardson website. It seems to be used fairly widely and we have never had any problems". Rwood128 (talk) 12:39, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

If you mean the image from http://dorothyrichardson.org/ then you can use it but it needs to be free of any copyright restrictions (in public domain) or otherwise it needs to be released by the photographer under a free license. It would be useful to know the dates when the image was taken and published. Ruslik (talk) 12:56, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
Actually it is the image at the top of the page here http://dorothyrichardsonexhibition.org, but I presume that the the same research is needed. I will see what I can do. Rwood128 (talk) 13:25, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
As Richardson was born in 1873 the image (http://dorothyrichardsonexhibition.org,) must be over a hundred years old. Does that mean it is now in the public domain? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rwood128 (talk • contribs) 13:36, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
Not necessarily. Her own work is not out of copyright, and if the photographer lived as long as she did, the photographer's own work would also still be copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 16:51, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

original research in metadata?

I work at a university library. A professor at our university is interested in having students in one of his classes help provide metadata for images in a scroll of yokai that we have. Students would be researching yokai and identifying them in the scroll so we could accurately label them when I/we upload them to commons. I realized that I'm not actually sure what the sourcing requirements on Commons are for metadata. This basically constitutes original research. Is it allowed? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 21:14, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Rachel,
Original research is allowed in all wiki communities, wikimedia.org, including Wikimedia Commons, the only exception is Wikipedia.
However I strongly suggest to include Wikidata in this activity check d:Q10301958 -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 21:28, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
I think another Commons user was saying that it's better to put image metadata on Wikidata. Is that a community consensus? Or is it common to put it on Wikidata and commons? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 21:43, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
Rachel, if you enter at File:Independence of Brazil 1888.jpg you will see a lot of information as size, date, medium, current location... that are not stored here, they are imported already from Wikidata. Clicking on "edit" you will see that almost nothing displayed is native.
But this is in a very advance integration with painting, and historical photos, draws..., for other types of material where are a lit bit behind. All files with this at the top of description, have some information coming from Wikidata.
Let me know if you need some help, even a more closer volunteer to tutor you on this path. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 10:49, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

"Women's Building"

It would seem to me that Category:Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition Women's Building should somehow relate to Category:Women of the United States via one or more subcategories of the latter, but nothing is leaping out to me. Any ideas? - Jmabel ! talk 01:21, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

I'm not sure this building refers to women of the US in particular. Judging from the interior it was a display hall for products related to women in general. Also, this exposition was an international trade fair with participants from as far away as Japan. De728631 (talk) 01:33, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Sadly, you can't tell from that photo, but, yes, the content was pretty much all domestic. After the exposition, the building evolved into a women's center for the University of Washington (where the exposition took place) and, although it was moved a couple of hundred meters in recent years, it still serves that purpose today. - Jmabel ! talk 16:18, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Immer Weiter

My Immer Weiter page is getting deleted in spite of the fact that I am owner of all intellectual rights (pictures, logo's) and extensions. Moreover all information is 100% correct and viable. How is that? thderooij — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thderooij (talk • contribs) 15:03, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

  • @Thderooij: I'm not sure what you mean by "My Immer Weiter page". Commons does not host articles. Perhaps you are asking this on the wrong site? Or perhaps you are referring to one or all of the following:

If you want to contest any of these deletion requests, please click (for each) where it says, "Convert to DR" and follow the instructions to dispute the matter.

I can tell you right away:

  • on File:Immer Weiter in 2016.jpg, if you did indeed take the photo, there should be no problem, just reassert that in the DR. It probably got tagged only because the other two were suspect.
  • on File:ImmerWeiterVaandel.jpg, presumably you did not design the object depicted: we'd need to know its copyright status.
  • on File:Immer Weiter Wielruiterslied.jpg: not clear this is in Commons' scope, it looks like basically a text, but leaving the scope issue aside, if "own work" means you wrote the text here then it is hard to see why it would be notable, and if you didn't then it means you need to address the copyright issues for the text.

Hi, did you ever publish that photo? Otherwise, I don't know how it would be technically possible. The file does look like a scan from a book. If it is, then it's certainly not OK and will be deleted. @Andries Van den Abeele: : where and when did you take that photograph? It doesn't look like it was taken in October 2015, as you claim. It rather looks like the photo at [2], too. --rimshottalk 22:32, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
I think all of Andries Van den Abeele's uploads, except for the street scenes, should be nominated for deletion. The dates are obviously invalid (e.g., on File:Marcel_Vandewiele.jpg, who died in 1999), and the "own work" claims are questionable. --ghouston (talk) 01:47, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
Their response to previous problems in User talk:Andries Van den Abeele has been to accuse an administrator of an "extreme (fundamentalist) interpretation of the copyright" and that "I have not much time to go into an elaborate search for licenses". --ghouston (talk) 01:53, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
I wonder why a simple photo of a public person, which is available on many places, would be a problem to reproduce. Should one not be happy that the articles devoted to this former rector of the College of Europe are illustrated by his picture? On what will he, the possible original author (of who the name was not mentioned on the pictures I encountered) or Wiki Commons be improved by deleting this photo? Andries Van den Abeele (talk) 08:09, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
  1. @Andries Van den Abeele: Your reasoning seems to be "if this person who is complaining has already been ripped off by other people, why shouldn't we also rip them off."
  2. You seem to be more or less admitting that your claim that this photo is your "own work" is false.
  3. At this point, unless quite an explanation is forthcoming, I'm inclined to nominate all of your uploads that are claimed as "own work" for deletion. Can you give any reason I should not do that?

Picture of the day

Hello,

How is the picture of the day chosen? How can I see who selected a given picture?

Benjaminikuta (talk) 11:26, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

I just realized that the Wikipedia picture of the day and the Wikimedia Commons picture of the day are two different things. It's confusing and redundant. Why is it this way? Benjaminikuta (talk) 12:17, 9 November 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia comes in many different languages and while there are basic rules and guidelines for all of them, any of these editions has its own set of preferences. Commons, however, is another independent Wikimedia project, which is why they all choose their pictures of the day as they see fit. At Commons, the picture of the day can be selected by anyone with the only rules being that the image must come from our pool of Commons:Featured pictures and may not have been chosen before. To see who selected which picture, simply click on the "change image" link below a picture at COM:POTD and view the edit history of the template that will show up. De728631 (talk) 17:02, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
"may not have been chosen before" this could be a good rule, but we see chosen before pics.

Renaming question

Hi, A few days ago I declined 2 rename requests by Chris j wood as he wanted to rename File:اسواق تجارية في لندن.jpg to File:Night view of Watts Warehouse, Manchester, England.jpg and File:شارع في لندن.jpg to File:Park Lane at Upper Brook Street.jpg,

The Arabic filenames translate as - "Commercial Markets in London" (first image) and "Street in London" (second image),

I declined these per COM:FR NOT #2 (Files should NOT be renamed only because the filename is not English and/or is not correctly capitalized. Remember, Commons is a multilingual project, so there's no reason to favor English over other languages.),

So the questions I wanted to ask are:

  • Is my interpretation of COM:FR #2 correct in that filenames shouldn't be changed from another language to English even if the filename in that language is wrong ? and
  • Should incorrect filenames only be renamed if they're still in the same language ?,

Pinging Steinsplitter who has great knowledge with the renaming process,

Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 13:58, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi, If possible the source language should be kept (COM:LP), but if nobody can translate a file it may be okay to rename (my personal opinion). In the past we had the issue that some users renamed perfectly named files from the source language to english, which is of course not in line with the language policy. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:04, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Steinsplitter, Unfortunately myself and Chris don't speak Arabic and I don't really know anyone that does so in this specific case should I rename these ?, I could email the uploader but there's no guarantee I'd get a reply, and I don't want to use Google Translate as I fear it would still be wrong, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 14:18, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
In the light of this, it seems legit to me to rename (if the arabic name is completely wrong). --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:30, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Steinsplitter, Okie dokie I'll go ahead and rename these, Many thanks for your help it's really appreciated :), Take care, –Davey2010Talk 14:32, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Category

Hi, A user moved all images from Category:Japan Matsuri 2010 to Category:Japan Matsuri 2010 (Montpelier) however the former category is still showing on images (example) -
I've looked at Category:Japan Matsuri 2010, Category:Japan Matsuri 2010 (Montpelier) and Category:Japan Matsuri 2010 - Supported by Wikimedia France as well as tried removing that category with HotCat but nothing seems to have worked,
So I give up and was wondering if someone could turn detective, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 15:22, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

@Davey2010: I made these edits and then used Cat-a-lot to remove them from overcategorization into Category:Japan Matsuri 2010 (Montpelier), which caused the previous 212 files and should cause any new files to move (at the mercy of the job queue).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:45, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Misnamed picture

The picture File:Blackwater station site geograph-3263955-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg is misnamed. It does not show the site of the old station. It was actually taken just north of this, but pointing the wrong way, so the old station building is not visible at all in the picture. However, because of the "geograph-3263955-by-Ben-Brooksbank" stuff, I do not know the protocol for renaming it. Perhaps someone could advise. Mypix (talk) 18:44, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

@Mypix: What would you find a more appropriate name, File:Road NE of old Blackwater station site geograph-3263955-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:21, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I think it is not worth mentioning the old station in the filename. As far as the location identification is concerned, it can be called "Blackwater Hollow, Blackwater, Isle of Wight, UK". The thing I'm not sure about is whether the "geograph-3263955-by-Ben-Brooksbank" bit should be retained as is, given that the other part of the name has changed. I'll leave that to you (or others). Thanks for your help. Mypix (talk) 11:22, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
@Mypix: Thanks, I renamed it File:Blackwater Hollow, Blackwater, Isle of Wight, UK geograph-3263955-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:59, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your help Jeff. Mypix (talk) 17:59, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
I think in general, if there's some identifying information in a filename (like the Geograph number and author here, or the image number in a lot of Flickr uploads), it's OK to leave it as is while correcting the rest of the filename. In any case, a file mover has to approve any request for renaming and they can always correct any technical problems with your suggested filename. Thank you for your correction, by the way. I've passed it back to Geograph so their information can be updated too. --bjh21 (talk) 13:29, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Comment We should give thanks for Ben Brooksbank's pictures; he went round the UK for decades recording its rail network, most of which has now disappeared. He died earlier this year, in his 90s. RIP. Rodhullandemu (talk) 13:37, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

  • On another point, the coordinates (which are given to great precision) appear to be slightly wrong, and, in particular, wrong enough to place the camera south-west of the old station site and railway crossing. This Google Street View shows the view from the supposed camera location, and you can see that it does not equate to the actual photo. On the other hand, the coordinates are meant to be those of the camera position, and I can't tell exactly where the camera was because of the unknown amount of zoom. What do we do in cases like this? Do I make a guess or just leave it alone? Mypix (talk) 18:40, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
    • You can tag locations with a precision, so if you can localise the picture within (say) 100m, you can put "prec=100" in the {{Location}} template. In this case, though, a moderator on Geograph has already updated the co-ordinates there and I've copied those to Commons. --bjh21 (talk) 17:46, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

Cropped, not cropped

I uploaded File:2008 age of ocean plates.png, but didn't want the title and citation at the top of it. So I downloaded it, opened it with Preview on a Mac, and then cropped it. On the Mac, the image was clearly cropped. In the preview on the Upload file page, it was clearly cropped. But after I finished uploading it, it wasn't cropped. What on Earth is going on? • Actually, I'm not convinced there is a problem on my computer, although just in case I'm going to run an error check on my volume. • Jeff G., thanks for the info. So it's a problem with my browser - that makes sense. In the meantime, the problem went away. RockMagnetist (talk) 04:56, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
              • RockMagnetist: I sometimes have the same problem with my Mac. In fcat more often than not, but if you open the page in a different browser, it looks just fine, proving it is some sort of browser cache problem. Don't worry about it. Also, for cropping, in most instances, there is no need to download and reupload to/from your computer but instead use the CropTool that is activated in your Commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed which also means the image does not have to be manually reviewed. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can overwrite the original image but for more major crops or you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. And sometimes even CropTool images have the same browser purge problem. Ww2censor (talk) 14:15, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

Image copyright

Good evening, I have contacted the owner of a specific image published on the EIA international site in order to use it in the inbox of the draft page I'm creating, and he has told me that the use of the image was free, I've even signed a Photographic contract in order to agree to the use of it . While I'm uploading the image, which kind of license should I select then? I'm not sure about the right one I possess about the image, and I wanted to ask about that. Thanks in advance to everyone, -- Stourbridgegrove (talk) 19:06, 12 November 2018

@Stourbridgegrove: Can you reveal exactly what they agreed to?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:53, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
Hey Stourbridgegrove. You can't select a license for them. They have to agree to release the content under a particular license themselves. There isn't really a legal vehicle for "free" per se. What there is are several different free types of legal contracts we use in the form of licenses, that each come with their own particular minor differences. Those differences could land someone in court one day. So it's very important that the copyright holder properly agree to what is literally a binding legal contract. GMGtalk 20:08, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
Jeff G. Yes of course! Here is the full text: "Upon the terms and conditions set out, the licensor hereby grants to the licensee the non-exclusive right to store and exploit “the material” for use within “the territory” under the “conditions” as follows. The licensee shall only use the images in accordance with the specification set out in schedule. Any further use of the images requires the further prior written agreement of the licensor." In the schedule it is specified that full credit to the ‘Environmental Investigation Agency’ must be given, as well as include the website, if possible.--Stourbridgegrove (talk) 14:59, 13 November 2018
Stourbridgegrove: certainly that statement does not appear free enough for us as all it requests is attribution and does not specifically state that commercial and derivative uses are permitted. Which EIA International are you talking about? The U.S. Energy Information Administration who are a US government body, so their works are in the public domain, unless the works or not actually theirs. Or is this perhaps a different EIA International? Ww2censor (talk) 16:45, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
Ww2censorI see, but that's exactly what he has wrote in the attached mail, that's why I'm having doubts! Anyway, I'm talking about the Environmental Investigation Agency, EIA International.--Stourbridgegrove (talk) 17:55, 13 November 2018

Need suggestion on finding good photos about United States police, particularly "stop and frisk" and "traffic stop"

Hello everyone! I'm working on the following Wikipedia pages:

and a few other related pages. I'd like to get 5-10 photos which shows frisks / "pat downs" and another 5 that show traffic stops in the United States. I checked via search and browsed by category and came up pretty much empty handed. I'd like to get very vivid photos that convey a good feeling about the subject. Modern is better, but I did come across a webpage with an old black and white photo of several people lined up and getting frisked, so maybe that would work for the frisk photos. I would need modern for the traffic stop photos.

Any suggestions? Thanks! Seahawk01 (talk) 02:27, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

Hey Seahawk01. Looks like there are a few images available at Category:Frisking and Category:Traffic stops. GMGtalk 15:02, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi GreenMeansGo, thanks for the reply! I did already check the categories and a lot are either photos of police training or from outside the United States.
So, I was interested in searching online and adding to the Commons. For example, doing a Google images search using: "traffic+stop"+site:.gov
Another idea I had was take body cam videos released by police and do a screenshot.
Seahawk01 (talk) 01:45, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
That's pretty much the standard search once you've done a google reuse with modification search. Other than that, you can just do a google image search and look for government sites, or sites from Florida, or some other jurisdiction that normally releases its contents into the public domain. Standard searches normally take care of the easy stuff like licenses on flickr. GMGtalk 01:48, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
GreenMeansGo, sounds good...thanks for the advice. I'm new to using the Commons, so it is very helpful. Seahawk01 (talk) 01:59, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Uploading a photo with permission from a family member

Hi,

I am trying to update the page of an applied linguist with a photo I have obtained from his granddaughter. She has given me permission to upload it but is that enough? Is it ok to just upload it with a note about where it was obtained?

Thanks

No, you need to know who is the copyright holder is and obtain a free license statement. She may be the sole heir and that would likely be ok, but you need to inquire and in that case it may even need an OTRS verification. Ww2censor (talk) 14:18, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

I don't have an answer to the question, but you need a lincense for each image. Are the images in question all your own work such that you can use the same licence for all of them ? -- Juergen (talk) 21:56, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Anybody in England?

I am looking for pictures for this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1946_British_Embassy_bombing

I know pictures from just after the bombing exist, like here: https://roomfordiplomacy.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/rome-res-off-bomb-damage-1946-fcol-a.jpg

I contacted the author of that webpage, and he said he had gotten them from Historic England at Swindon, and that he had permission according to the FCO "Open Govt Licence". Is that enough for uploading it to commons? Huldra (talk) 22:36, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

All versions of the Open Government Licence are acceptable for Commons. Use {{OGL}}, {{OGL2}} or {{OGL3}} as appropriate. I think that pretty much any work licenced under any version of OGL is now available under OGLv3, so you should use {{OGL3}} for a newly-uploaded work if you're not sure. --bjh21 (talk) 13:51, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
User:Bjh21 Ok thanks, does that mean I can copy straight from, say https://roomfordiplomacy.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/rome-res-off-bomb-damage-1946-fcol-a.jpg to commons, using a {{OGL3}} licence? Huldra (talk) 22:28, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Legally, I think that would be fine. Whether the sourcing would be adequate for Commons, I'm not so sure. I'd suggest explaining as much of the provenance of the picture as possible in the "Source" field. --bjh21 (talk) 22:59, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Ok, thanks! Huldra (talk) 23:36, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Do you speak English ? Most people here don't understand Swedish, neither do I. So I tried Google Translate and the question is: I need help to delete some pictures I uploaded.
The answer is: Read the Swedish page Commons:Deletion requests/sv. Google translates this as:
Läs den svenska sidan Commons:Deletion requests/sv.
But in fact, most of that page is in English either. Maybe you find the time to translate it into Swedish. -- Juergen (talk) 22:03, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
@Henrikjsson: I don't see any pictures that you've uploaded here in roughly the last six years, so I presume this is not about a recent accidental upload. You can nominate your own old pictures for deletion, just like anyone else can, but you presumably granted an appropriate license when you uploaded them, and you can't simply undo that.- Jmabel ! talk 23:49, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Using screenshots of publicly released police dash/body cam videos

Hello, can anyone fill me in on using screenshots of publicly released police dash/body cam videos as images. Initially I thought that anything the government produces is public domain because taxpayers pay for it. Then, looking into things more, I see that dash/body cam videos can be considered "investigative records" and that there are also privacy concerns about releasing them.

On the other hand, I only want to use publicly released videos. So, am I correct in considering them as public records and, therefore, public domain? The two examples I'm including are from the Des Moines Police Department released at the request of the Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement. Thanks!

Seahawk01 (talk) 05:51, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Hello again Seahawk01. Works by governments are not automatically public domain unless that government (as the owner) releases it as such. Yes, it would make sense to be publicly funded and therefore publicly owned, but unfortunately most governments don't see it that way. As far as I know, governments that actually do make sense includes the US federal government, the state of Florida, and I believe some agencies in Maryland, but I'm not aware of any others off the top of my head.
Keep in mind too that public domain is a particular legal term from intellectual property law, and isn't the same as public record or publicly available. These may deal with availability, while "public domain" per se deals with ownership. For example, a publicly funded statue in the US may be publicly available for viewing, and even placed in a public park, but under US law, the creator still retains the rights to the intellectual property of the artwork.
I'm afraid unless you have something from these particular agencies or the state of Iowa releasing official works into the public domain, then ownership is presumed retained by the agency that made them. GMGtalk 11:57, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Also California, see Template:PD-CAGov. Ww2censor (talk) 22:38, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
@Ww2censor: thanks, very helpful! Seahawk01 (talk) 02:17, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
@GreenMeansGo: thanks for the reply. I'm really new to Wiki Commons, so this discussion is enlightening. I had no idea states were different in handling copyright. I did a bit of research and came up with this: State Copyright Resource Center. Next, I checked the Des Moines Police Department and they have a form for release of public records which includes body and in-car camera recordings. Going back to the first link, I found Iowa FOIA Laws, I found out that Iowa's Open Records Law includes the right to "publish or otherwise disseminate" public records (another link here that also says "there are no restrictions for use of the records in the law"). So, I guess I'm in the clear and there are no restrictions regarding reuse, at least with respect to Iowa! Do you agree with my analysis? Thanks for the time! picture transfer from one page to another - translated

Hi

So... I've been trying to get a pic of Mark Manson on the translated Danish page; created using wiki's translation tool. When I access the pic on the English wiki-page for Manson it informs me that it is an ideal candidate for upload to wiki commons - this would then (obviously) allow me to insert it into his Danish wiki-page. On doing this however, and whilst referring to his en.wiki page as the source, I was told that this violated your guidelines. How can it be that wikimedia commons will not accept this, when it recommends that the picture be uploaded??

regards clmogensen88

p.s. I'm really at a miss here - it makes no sense to me. Hoping to hear back soon — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clmogensen88 (talk • contribs) 16:43, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Sorry Clmogensen88, but that image w:File:Mark-Manson-Headshot-2016.jpg on the enwiki has no evidence of permission and this webpage https://markmanson.net/terms-and-conditions clearly disallows commercial use so we can't use it. The tag for a move to commons is wrong. I've also tagged the same commons image as having no permission. You might ask the subject for an image that has been freely licensed by the copyright holder, who in most instances is the photographer. Ww2censor (talk) 22:53, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Tampa Florida category names

Where is the best place to propose a renaming of numerous categories? Looking through Category:Tampa, Florida by decade, the 1970s categories onward (both decade and year) use only Tampa and not Tampa, Florida (with redirect to make it Tampa) which is problematic because the main template (see, e.g. this page) uses Tampa, Florida. I don't know which is better but I can't find a place for general discussion. Should I start a centralized discussion at the talk page for the history page? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:27, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

I think this would be classed as uncontroversial (see Commons:Rename a category), so doesn't need a discussion. If you add the renaming requests to User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands, an administrator will examine the requests before they are done. --ghouston (talk) 05:47, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

I'm sure that I ask a question which were asked one hundred times, but I can't find the answer, so I ask it nevertheless.

In the french article of the trade-union FSU, I see its logo. I know that we can't add logos to Wikimedia Commons, but I also know that we can add files directly to Wikipedia when some specific rule allows the use of a copyrighted material.

I am writing the article of the FSU on the Esperanto Wikipedia. I would like to add this logo. Can I? And if I can, how can I do that?

Thank you (and sorry for my poor English)!

Photographs released into public domain

Hi everyone. I contacted Mr John Mathew Smith on FlickR to ask for his permission to transfer some photographs of Diana, Princess of Wales, to Wikimedia Commons. He agreed, and I am very grateful because we have so few photographs of the "world's most photographed woman". I explained that he should change the licenses and he chose to release them into public domain. When I transferred the files, however, I noticed that that was not enough. Why is it in public domain? Because the copyright holder said so on FlickR. Should he have chosen another license? I would not like to bother him too much anymore. The files in question are File:Diana 1996.jpg, File:Diana, Princess of Wales 1996.jpg, and File:Diana portrait 1996.jpg. Surtsicna (talk) 01:07, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks, Jeff G.. I had not. What do you suggest I do now? Should I ask the photographer to change the licenses... again? Surtsicna (talk) 02:03, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
@Surtsicna: Yes, please, and don't recommend PDM if you want files to survive here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:08, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Okay, Jeff G., I have asked the photographer to change the license again. It would be a great shame to lose these photographs. They are the highest quality and most recent photographs of Diana that we have. Surtsicna (talk) 08:06, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
When the licenses are changed again, do I just edit the file description to reflect the change? Will the bot check it or does it have to be done manually? Surtsicna (talk) 08:11, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
@Surtsicna: Just replace the licensing section templates with the replacement license and {{Flickrreview}}; the bot will do the rest.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:46, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

uploading a sound file

I have no idea how to go about this. If I record sound (very short) on my phone , how do I upload it to wikicommons____ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cathigalesa (talk • contribs) 15:31, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

  • @Cathigalesa: Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Uploading photos from a company

Dear Commons,

I have been in contact with a company about licensing their photos for use on a Wikipedia page. They have forwarded me on the original photo files and have given me written permission to upload to Wikipedia. Now, I am having trouble with the licensing permissions portion of the Upload Wizard. Please your instructions and assistance on where to send the photos now, in order to make a successful upload.

Kind regards,

Reposting Newly Sorted Data?

Hello,

Can I upload images of data from Wikipedia that I sorted in Excel?

Recently people online have made a stirring about CNN's List of 27 Deadliest Shooters (I have yet to find the actual list). Online, it was emphasized that 26 of 27 shooters were fatherless (which was later redacted https://www.crisismagazine.com/2018/fatherless-shooters-clarification-data). I thought it was interesting that people were focusing on one aspect of a person's demographics (and not commenting on the fact that all the shooters were males), and I decided to look at the component of the Race of the shooters. I based the numbers off of the information provided by Wikipedia's page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_school_shootings_in_the_United_States. I found that out of thirteen school shootings with five or more victims in the U.S., totaling 44 deaths and 171 injuries, 12 out of 14 shooters were White. I organized the data descending by number of deaths per event, saved the Excel document as a PDF, and exported the PDF to PNG and JPG formats.

Because the data was already online, on Wikipedia's List of school shootings in the United States page, can I upload the two images of the data to that same page and can I include a caption summarizing the images?

[I was unable to upload the images to this Editing Commons: Help Desk page. Neither PNG Image or JPEG Image formats were permitted to be uploaded] — Preceding unsigned comment added by I The Rebel I (talk • contribs) 23:57, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

  • This is Commons. We can't really speak for what you can do in Wikipedia. Each different-language Wikipedia has its own policies, which will vary from one to another. I think for the English-language Wikipedia, which I know best, unless you could find a reliable source discussing this demographic issue it would at least border on unacceptable synthesis.
  • Technically, a graph like this would best be expressed in SVG format. PNG would be next most acceptable. JPEG seems a poor choice.
  • Uploading an image is a separate matter from transcluding it into a page. I can't think of any reason you couldn't upload the relevant images to Commons; you'd upload them here just like any other file. Please use an appropriate filename if you do this. Once they are here, there should be no technical difficulty transcluding them into a Wikipedia page but, again, acceptability in Wikipedia might be an entirely different matter. - Jmabel ! talk 06:26, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Spanish Translation Required

With reference to User talk:廣九直通車#File:ARA San Juan.jpg, User:NINASANTPL left a comment in Spanish on my talk page asking about File:ARA San Juan.jpg, a file tagged with Template:No permission since. As I cannot understand Spanish, can anyone who can speak both English and Spanish help to translate the following text? It seems to be related to an OTRS permission provided.
"Hola,

Hi. I will translate it. I received an erasure notice. This file has OTRS permission, it was properly provided when file was uploaded. Is not the first time i received this kind of advices. Would be better if we don´t lose time explaining and use it for editing new contents to make wikipedia greater.

@Jmabel: Thank you for your translation. Can you please then translate my reply to Spanish please?
"OK, I have removed the deletion tag on the file and added Template:OP to notify OTRS members. Thank you for notifying me for the file. If you wish to use OTRS permission next time, please add Template:OP to the licensing section, thank you.廣九直通車 (讨论) 09:52, 22 November 2018 (UTC)"

Appeal of delete decision

I want to appeal two decisions to delete images that I uploaded. The first image was File:Farrar's Island Marker K199.jpg. This image is no different than many others found on wikipedia. There are two such images (different names) on Jordan Point, Virginia. Why are those and other images acceptable but mine isn't. They all came from the same source or appear to.

The second image that is up for deletion is File:Westwood - Letter from Lord Farrer 1930.jpg.

It did not come off the web, as I tried to explain when I uploaded it. I received it from an English Cousin, who had it photographed from an archive in Surrey County, England. I don't see how that could be copyrighted. The upload options are too limited, When you choose other, it says that you found it on the internet, and that is not true in my case. I received it from a cousin via email and it did not come from the internet.Alvanhholmes (talk) 07:32, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Alvanhholmes (talk) 07:32, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

@Alvanhholmes: go to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Westwood - Letter from Lord Farrer 1930.jpg to discuss that file. In general, a work falls in the public domain 70 years after the death of the author. There are a lot of exceptions to that, but that's what usually applies outside the US. Do I understand correctly this is a copy of a letter from the 1500s or 1600s? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 08:14, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: Clearly not, it is dated 1930, and written on a typewriter. - Jmabel ! talk 19:08, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
@Alvanhholmes: I guess File:Farrar's Island Marker K199.jpg was deleted either because it was somebody else's photo, and they didn't release it with a free license, or because it's a photo of a copyrighted sign. Where are the other similar images you are referring to? Presumably in Category:Historical markers in Virginia? --ghouston (talk) 21:53, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Flickr images

There is an option for LicenseReviewers, Administrators and Extended Upload User in UploadWizard for direct transfer of files from Flickr. I am a user with no rights. So, I want to ask that if there is any option to enable the feature for me.--√Tæ√ 13:47, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

@: , maybe it would be better to propose this at the Village pump to enable this for all users, there is a Flickr review bot and the MediaWiki Upload Wizard is way better at detecting duplicates than Magnus Manske's Flickr2Commons, I personally can't see why users need to be "trusted" to upload images that will automatically go through a review process anyhow so it would be best to try to expand the users who could use it. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:28, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: Truly manual uploads of images from Flickr do not "automatically go through a review process anyhow". I suspect Tæ had some help, maybe from Flinfo.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:43, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
@: Commons:Flickr2Commons is a useful tool, but it must be used with caution. I have just marked some of your transfers as probably inadvertent copyright violations: merely because someone posts an image to Flickr with a free license does not ensure they are the copyright holders of that image: derivative works and potential signs of license laundering should be avoided. Missing Undo in the Wikimaps Warper

On File:2017 Stockholm attack.png, I clicked the "Georeference the map in Wikimaps Warper" button and tried to use the Wikimaps Warper for my first time, but I made a mistake with one of the control points. How can I correct that ? I did not find an edit, delete or undo function for the control points. -- Juergen (talk) 21:40, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Fixed it, I think. I logged into Warper, went to the "Rectify" (=edit?) tab, repositioned the markers and clicked the "Warp image!" (=save?) button. "Preview" does not seem to work like we are used to here. --HyperGaruda (talk) 20:12, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

German black letter font

Is there a way to invoke the German Black Letter font to transcribe the text in an image? I generally try and do the original font and then the default font. RAN (talk) 05:05, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

  • 𝖄𝖔𝖚 𝖈𝖆𝖓 𝖇𝖚𝖙 𝖎𝖙 𝖎𝖘 𝖙𝖊𝖉𝖎𝖔𝖚𝖘, and because it uses different code points, it means that search engines won't be able to read the content, which defeats much of the purpose of transcription. But Fraktur talks about somehow handling it with Unicode & font specification, but doesn't explain exactly how to make that work. - Jmabel ! talk 06:35, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
Ohhh! You cut and pasted the ASCII symbols, very clever. What I will do is add the text in the ASCII symbols and then duplicate it in standard Unicode text in German and a third translate into English in Unicode. Thanks! RAN (talk)
Here is a website that substitutes in the old ASCII symbols automatically. I could not get HTML code to display Fraktur, it must not be in the HTML5 defaults. Thank you again for your help. RAN (talk) 21:15, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

How do you properly download a full sized (largest pixel sized) photo from a page here?

Hello,

I seem to be having trouble downloading the full sized photo at: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KirklandLakeStrike.jpg No matter what I do...I get a 366 KB sized version that I don't believe is the full sized 4,181 × 2,303 pixel version (Because when someone else downloaded it, they got at 1.7 MB sized photo)

Also, for awhile there was a download button to the right of the photo but I think I accidentally clicked an "X" there and now those options have disappeared and I can't seem to get them back.

Please help! (Am obviously new to this!)

Thank you, J.W. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2001:569:BCEC:5600:447D:B754:637E:729C (talk) 19:36, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

The document you downloaded was KirklandLakeStrike.jpg and this is in fact the full resolution version in only 366 kB. This is possible because there is no much detail in the photo: everything is blurred and can thus be compressed that much. If you donload that image in some other format, you get a larger file, but not more details. -- Juergen 176.198.232.164 20:12, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by MarcoMichele2018 (talk • contribs) 2018-11-19 02:47 UTC (UTC)

  • I have only moderate Italian. If I understand, you are saying you cannot upload these, but you do not say why you cannot. Are you simply saying that as a preface to asking for advice, or are you saying you tried and ran into technical difficulties, or you tried and someone removed them, or what?
  • I have no idea what a "sandbook" is. Looks like English, but doesn't mean anything.
  • May I presume that your father is no longer alive? If so, are you the heir to his intellectual property?
  • There are possibly as many as three different categories of documents here:
    • Government documents, which either are or are not in the public domain under Italian law (I don't know Italian law, and if you need advice on that you'll need to go to Commons:Village pump/Copyright to ask about that). The fact that the documents are about your deceased relatives will have no bearing on whether Commons can host them. You won't hold any intellectual property rights in them, those will either belong to the government or to no one.
    • Photographs by your father. It is possible that for some reason these are in the public domain under Italian law; once again, you'd have to go to Commons:Village pump/Copyright to ask about that. Otherwise, if you are the heir to his intellectual property then you can upload these using an "heirs" licensing tag such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}.
    • Possibly photographs by other people: the copyright status of these would need to be determined individually. Unless they are in the public domain, these would each need permission from its copyright holder. See COM:OTRS/it.
  • I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 17:01, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Vandalism/hacking

Hello,

I've just noticed that in all the descriptions for my images (click on them individually here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Lloergi&ilshowall=1), the original Welsh text has somehow been replaced with Arabic text, even though the code still shows the original Welsh text.

Hello,

I would like to upload to the Hormel Wikipedia page a photo from the company's Facebook page. Can I do this and if so, how?

--Hello-Mary-H (talk) 21:19, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

@Hello-Mary-H: Are you the owner of the photograph, or has it been released with a suitable license? Most images posted on company facebook pages are copyright restricted. - Themightyquill (talk) 09:21, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

@Themightyquill: I do not own the photos but do work with Hormel. What is the best approach to using Facebook, online, or other photos? Do I need to have the company say in writing that they approve the usage? Thank you Hello-Mary-H (talk) 16:29, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

  • See COM:OTRS. We need communication as described there, from someone who owns the copyrights of the images in question. If the company owns the copyrights, that would be anyone with authority to speak for the company. If you want previous uploads undeleted, you can indicate them, ideally by the old file name but if that is not readily available then by the account under which they were uploaded. - Jmabel ! talk 17:52, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Converting to vector graphics: unrecognisable Logo of US army institution

I traced the battle-plan of the Battle of Dara in inkscape.

I was unable to recognise the logo due to the poor quality. Should I include a cropped raster or not include it? The original graphic was made by US army personal.

My potential submission — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aberunon (talk • contribs) 22:04, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

@Aberunon: you may be able to get a better idea of what the logo should look like from the original PDF the linked image was derived from. You can also open the PDF in Inkscape to get a rough vector version to use as a basis for a clearer logo. clpo13(talk) 18:15, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
@Aberunon: the logo is indeed vector art in the source PDF (as is the rest of the diagram). Let me know if you want help extracting it; it needs the fonts Century Handtooled (“History Department USMA”) and Alexa (“Frank Martini”), which I could convert to outlines if you don’t have them.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:14, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

@Clpo13: Thank you, I was unable to find it and didn't think of using an archive. I'm not sure what you mean when you call the logo rough though.
@Odysseus1479: I was able to import the PDF into Inkscape. I don't have the fonts, but should I not replace them with open ones? Should I leave the image as is, or is it better to enlarge the logo, and remove the number in the top right and the useless border? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aberunon (talk • contribs) 00:52, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

First file takes long to upload

I seem to have a recurring issue that seems to affect every device I use that seems to make the first (1st) selected file 📁 very slow to upload, in fact many times I would have to retry to upload the file as it claims to have connectivity issues, oddly enough this doesn't (usually) seem to affect any other files and all others upload normally. I've had this issue for several days now and it affects all my devices across multiple networks (I've tried a few public networks around, some are really fast and the others are painfully slow, but all seem to have the same recurring issues). Is anyone else experiencing this? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 08:53, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Invisible sort key ?

Can anyone tell me why Category:Samson is effectively organized with a comma sort key (,) even though that doesn't seem to be included anywhere in the page code (or in wikidata, as far as I can see) ? Thanks. - Themightyquill (talk) 09:20, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

It's also true of Category:Damso and Category:M Potter, but I don't see any connection. - Themightyquill (talk) 09:44, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
Looks like it comes from {{PeopleByName}}, which adds a defaultsort key based on "last name, first name". If neither name is defined, you end up with just the comma from between the names. --HyperGaruda (talk) 11:31, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Hmmm, it does not explain why e.g. Category:Samuel is sorted correctly, even though their wikidata pages are similar, at least in the statement department. --HyperGaruda (talk) 11:39, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Hold on. While Samuel's and Samson's category wikidata pages are basically the same, their mainspace wikidata pages differ in one crucial point: Samson has a "family name" statement without a value while Samuel does not. My guess is that {{PeopleByName}} then creates the defaultsort key , Samson, because the family name is sort of defined (with "no value"). --HyperGaruda (talk) 11:50, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Easy to fix in these cases, but is a bug in {{PeopleByName}} that should either be fixed or at least documented? - Themightyquill (talk) 08:36, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Sketch made of a photo

I discovered an old photo (about 1950) in a book, showing two persons. I made a drawing of one of them. Can this drawing be considered as 'own work' and may I upload it? There is after all hardly any likeness to the photo. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peter de Schaatser (talk • contribs) 15:57, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Image of Dora Marsden

I'm trying to find the owner of this image of Dora Marsden in order to source a higher res version. How do I find who owns the copyright?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dora_Marsden.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2.98.2.72 (talk) 11:55, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

File:Dora Marsden.jpg is out of copyright. The original photo was taken by George Charles Beresford in 1906. "In 1943 the National Portrait Gallery acquired some of his negatives and prints from his former secretary." Beware NPG claims of copyright. Neither Tineye nor Google Images has found a better version of it online.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:26, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Can I use this picture on Wikipedia?

Hello,

I want to add a picture to a Wikipedia article I am working on. The picture and credit are given in this newspaper article: https://www.journaldequebec.com/2018/11/20/alex-henry-foster-un-succes-inattendu

Can I simply add the picture on Wikipedia while giving the credits to the photographer stated in the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mme Gogo (talk • contribs) 19:42, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

@Mme Gogo: no, content on Wikimedia Commons/Wikipedia must be freely licensed or public domain, as defined at Commons:Licensing. Generally speaking, pictures found on the Internet are presumed to be copyrighted and not released under a free license unless otherwise stated. clpo13(talk) 21:13, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Signing in

Hi! I am unable to sign in to Wiki. I do have an 'account' but use it infrequently. I know my User Name (Wardie44) but the email address associated with it is no longer used. Also, my current email address, which is [suppressed for privacy], won't be recognised by Wiki. Consequently, I am stuck between the two proverbial immovable objects. Yes, I could just start a new 'account' but that leaves me with no link to my previous contributions.

Please advise.

  • As far as I can tell, if you have both forgotten you password and changed your email, you are pretty much out of luck. See en:Help:Logging_in#What_if_I_forget_the_password?. There are some suggestions there about how to effectively link your old account to your new one, but there's no way to truly merge them and end up with the same account name on your past and future contributions. - Jmabel ! talk 22:25, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
  • It looks like you had a grand total of 1 edit on en-wiki and 27 here on Commons (about a third of them uploads, but a lot of those were overwriting yourself), none of them in the last 7 years or so. - Jmabel ! talk 22:33, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Section watch

I recently consolidated information about copyright rules from a variety of sources into country-specific pages like Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany. The country pages have sections with names like #Copyright tags, #Currency, #Freedom of panorama and so on, and the contents of these sections are transcluded back to the topic-specific lists like Commons:Copyright tags, Commons: Currency, Commons:Freedom of panorama and so on.

  • The advantage is that because all the rules for one country are now in one place, it will be easier for an uploader to check if their file is o.k., and easier to make sure all the rules are consistent with current copyright law for that country.
  • The drawback is that someone with a specialized interest in a topic such as Freedom of panorama will no longer see changes to that information. The topic-specific list will show the current version of the transcluded sections, but the source code of the list will not change, so there will be no watchlist notification.

It is not reasonable to expect someone interested in Freedom of panorama to watch the 200-odd country pages, since most of the changes will be irrelevant to them. Is there some way they could be notified of changes only to sections named "Freedom of panorama" in a list of country-specific pages? Aymatth2 (talk) 17:38, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

@Aymatth2: wouldn't it be better to convert those sections into templates so they'll be displayed the same on every page that they're on? I actually use Commons:Currency a lot and I most certainly can see the advantage in having that information listed at the concerned country, however if the same information is repeated then it might get uploaded in one page and not the other. Are sections even allowed to be templates? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:24, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
As an example one could create {{Copyright-Germany/Currency}} and {{Copyright-Germany/FoP}} and then add them to both the Germany page and their respective "specialised entries" while these templates (substituted or not) could be used in deletion requests or in conversations. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:28, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: The sections are transcluded at display time from the country pages to the topic pages (e.g. from Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany#Currency to Commons:Currency#Germany). In a sense, the sections are being treated as templates. They automatically look the same on both pages.
If the contents of Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany#Currency were converted to a template, a contributor could not edit Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Germany as a whole, but would have to move from template to template as they worked through different sections to reflect a new law or legal ruling. Template changes do not show on the watchlists of pages that include them. The currency expert would have to watch 99 templates, and might not spot new ones as they were created. The Germany expert would now have to watch and maintain seven or eight templates.
The present approach of managing the data as sections in the Germany page and transcluding them into the currency page makes editing much easier for the people do most of the edits – people who understand German and monitor changes to German copyright rules. But it would be useful if there were also a simple way for currency experts to get alerts for changes to #Currency sections. As it is now, they will always see the latest versions in Commons:Currency, but will not get alerts on changes. Aymatth2 (talk) 21:30, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
I've already posted on Aymatth2's talk page as I have a wide interest in the copyright of stamps and FoP but only now, after implantation have I been considering the practical scenario and find that the transclusion from the individual country pages to the topic pages, Stamps, FoP Currency etc., is highly impractical from a patrolling and topic watching viewpoint. It would be better to transclude from the topic pages to the country pages. Anyone wanting to edit a country page would see all the details for Stamps, Currency, etc, right there but if edits are needed they will see that has to be done on the topic page. Right now if I want to review or watch for any changes to the Stamps copyrights, where my interest is in many countries, I would have to watch every country page (about 200) just to see an edit and I would see very edit to those pages. Very impractical indeed but not so when reversed. I don't know of any way to see these edits other than watching each and every page so suggest reversing the transclusion and I offered to help out. Consider what is more practical not what readers will see as that will show the same data. Ww2censor (talk) 00:17, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
The problem here is:
  • The Germany people want alerts for all changes to Germany + Stamps/Currency/De minimis/Freedom of panorama/Tags/Threshold of originality etc.
  • The Stamps people want alerts for all changes to Stamps + Germany/Ghana/Greece/Grenada/Guatemala etc.
Is there a way to satisfy both groups? Aymatth2 (talk) 01:48, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Photo not accurate

My photo of Mark Wotte is not accurate and outdated.

How to change that?

Mark — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mcw2590 (talk • contribs) 01:54, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

The existing photo should be left alone, because it's presumably accurate for how he looked in 2007. A newer photo can be uploaded to Commons as long as it has been freely licensed. --ghouston (talk) 02:51, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

upload fails

I tried to upload a svg file of ca. 18 MB with contains a lot of svg stuff over a big *.png

the upload fails, two times:

  • Upload Wizard ==> error message: This file did not pass file verification.
  • Old form (Upload file) ==> error message: The XML in the uploaded file could not be parsed.

Is it too big?

Is there a test tool in commons for that? https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgcheck/index.php seems not to respond.

Thanks in advance, --Juan Villalobos (talk) 08:27, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

@Juan Villalobos: Special:AbuseFilter/examine/log/3977803 is a licensing problem. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 11:28, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
It seems to me that File:Cuenca rio serrano.svg has no problem. It is only a screenshot of OSM plus some data, total 262 KB.
My problem is the 18 MB file with the This file did not pass file verification. or The XML in the uploaded file could not be parsed. messages. --Juan Villalobos (talk) 11:46, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
It is impossible to discuss the problem without any knowledge on the SVG but verbal interpretations of the uploader. What does http://validator.w3.org say about the SVG? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:57, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
https://validator.w3.org/check answer's was :
Congratulations
The uploaded document "Cuencas-total2.svg" was successfully checked as XML. This means that the resource in question identified itself as "XML" and that we successfully performed a formal validation of it. The parser implementations we used for this check are based on Compound XML and libxml2 (XML).
I will try it again, right now, in Commons under the file name komplett.svg. (there is already a file named "Cuencas-total2.svg" in Commons) --Juan Villalobos (talk) 12:01, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
Again. Common's upload answer was:
komplett.svg
This file did not pass file verification.

My contributions are always deleted

Can you tell me why my contributions are always deleted? Maria Steve 72 (talk) 22:32, 27 November 2018 (UTC)!

  • I can't answer the "always" part, but of images that are currently online:
    • File:Ambassador Tran Nguyen Ngoc Trang.png clearly comes from a TV screen or web page. I see no evidence that the copyright-holder released it under the license you claim.
    • a lot of these seem to be pictures of one person. Have you made a case why that person is notable? Basically, this would be a matter of showing independent coverage of her in the press: sites/pages under her own control don't count toward this. Has she been written about in the newspapers? Appeared on television being interviewed? Etc. That's the sort of thing you need to demonstrate to show notability. - Jmabel ! talk 22:42, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

Viewing my photos

How do I view all my photos at once, so as not to upload duplicates? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gary A Collett (talk • contribs) 21:21, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

@Gary A Collett: There should be a link in the upper right called "Uploads" that takes you to this page, which shows all the files you've uploaded. Under "Items per page" you can choose how many to show at once. ekips39 (talk) 02:32, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

I've been uploading vector versions of the raster images on this page. I believe the "vertical bisection" ones are simple enough to not be copyrightable, so I've tagged mine as {{PD-shape}}, but sections farther down the page have images of increasing complexity. The original PNGs were uploaded with various different (free) licenses but not {{PD-shape}}. Do you know if any images there do meet the threshold of originality, and if so, which ones? I'd like to know what to tag my uploads with. I hope this is the right place to ask. ekips39 (talk) 00:48, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

How do you add photos in a page on a smartphone?

I’ve been trying and I still can’t find it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Keopalo (talk • contribs) 12:27, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

@Keopalo: , you could simply click on the pencil ✏ in the upper right corner of the page / section and then copy and paste the wikicode from a file, for example from File:FNV-voorzitter Lodewijk de Waal en vice-voorzitter Ben van Zweden in discussie m, Bestanddeelnr 934-4541.jpg you could add [[File:FNV-voorzitter Lodewijk de Waal en vice-voorzitter Ben van Zweden in discussie m, Bestanddeelnr 934-4541.jpg|thumb|left|FNV-voorzitter Lodewijk de Waal en vice-voorzitter Ben van Zweden in discussie m, Bestanddeelnr 934-4541]] if you want it on the left side of the page or [[File:FNV-voorzitter Lodewijk de Waal en vice-voorzitter Ben van Zweden in discussie m, Bestanddeelnr 934-4541.jpg|thumb|right|FNV-voorzitter Lodewijk de Waal en vice-voorzitter Ben van Zweden in discussie m, Bestanddeelnr 934-4541]] if you want it on the right. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:37, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Fritz Kredel portrait

Hello, I would like to add a portrait of Fritz Kredel that I found in this 1979 magazine on internet archive. https://archive.org/details/somethingaboutau17anne/ (portrait on page 92)

Does it respect the copyright laws?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joshuahaymann (talk • contribs) 11:38, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

The magazine hopefully does, but transfering that image to Commons most likely would not. Unless the magazine was published with a compatible license (and that would be mentioned in the article), copyright will apply. Richard 12:05, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Medi Tech Trust

Hi This is my first attempt in making an entry on Wiki. Can you help me by explaining: 1] Why my uploaded file on my husband's charity is being considered for deletion. 2] Do I need to get him to authorise the use of the charity logo. 3] What else have I done wrong. The reason for putting this up is at the request of many people in Africa who find it easier to search Wiki than link onto other websites. many thanks Sandra Lewis — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sandra.k.lewis (talk • contribs) 16:58, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

  1. If you are writing about your husband's charity on any of the Wikipedias, you have a conflict of interest. I hope you have declared that there.
  2. Unless the logo is so simple as to be public domain, the owner of the copyright on the logo would need to send permission as described at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 18:18, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
