How to include LaTeX source code as metadata on uploaded SVG image?

I'm looking to upload a few chemical structures created using LaTeX/chemfig/TikZ and converted to SVG. I'd very much like to include the chemfig/LaTeX source code that was used to create the SVG, like it was done for this SVG: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Beta-Carotene_conjugation.svg

(please note the field "SVG development" in the Summary box, and the LaTeX source code included therein).

Now I have just uploaded an SVG to Wikimedia Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eriochrome_black_T.svg

But I got no option to create/add this field with the upload wizard. How do I include the LaTeX source code for the SVG I uploaded? Solarchemist (talk) 03:28, 1 September 2020 (UTC)Solarchemist

@Solarchemist: Hi, and welcome. The LaTeX code for generating File:Beta-Carotene conjugation.svg is in a {{Image generation}} box in the "other versions" portion of {{Information}}; your code can be in your file description page File:Eriochrome black T.svg the same way, but it might be better located in the source portion.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:14, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks for so kindly getting me over that first bump. The result looks quite good to me: File:Eriochrome_black_T.svg. On to the next adventure ツ -- Solarchemist (talk) 21:53, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

I nominated this file for deletion back in June using the automated process. I obviously missed something (although I *thought* on checking that all the steps had been completed) as there seem to have been no developments. I'm afraid I can't figure out what is wrong! My picture of the starfish

Hi guys! I recently sent a picture to wiki commons of a starfish I found. Sadly I haven't heard anything from you guys about it. Is this my fault as in like I didn't send it to the right place or if you did get it what happens to the pictures you guys don't use ? I'm waiting to hear back from you guys and thanks for letting me join this site and you can send any type of work for me to help with !!! 😃 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ddemod (talk • contribs) 03:50, 1 September 2020‎ (UTC)

Forget about it?

Wow like 10,000 everyday!!!! That's..... incredible.I don't mean to be a bother but your all connected right ? Wikipedia ? I wanted to know if it could be added to their list of pictures about starfish since I don't know how to send a picture directly to Wikipedia.Sorry if this is wasting your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ddemod (talk • contribs) 01:10, 2 September 2020‎ (UTC)

@Ddemod: You can add File:Found Under My Island's Seas.jpg to en:Oreaster reticulatus. Hopefully, en:Help:Pictures can help with that.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:24, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

I can't help with so few information. Please read the beginners' help section, and post your questions on the relevant forums. Cheers, FredD (talk) 07:07, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
@Mytrystwithangkorwat: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:05, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

And the link is to a category, so I don't know what photo he might be asking about. Can we please get help here from a Russian-speaker??

File extension problem prevents upload

Something I have done repeatedly is today causing a problem.

I'm trying to upload a better version of

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:T-john-brown-last-prophecy.jpg

The source is:

https://archive.org/details/johnbrown00villuoft/page/n612/mode/1up

I get this error message:

Files of the MIME type "text/html" are not allowed to be uploaded.

The file I'm trying to upload should be .png. I have done this so many times before I couldn't count. But today it doesn't work. This is on an iPad and in that operating system file extensions are hidden and it's complicated to change them using an external program.

Tool for making long list of filenames

A former user who has had ~500/4000 of their uploads deleted has some more problematic uploads (probably violating COM:PEOPLE, and some having exactly the same traits criticized in previous deletions). While I don't really want to go through their images, I feel Commons has a duty to the non-consenting subjects. I think that a mass-deletion request would be suitable here, subject to correction. What would be the best tool to rapidly make a list of the filenames for a mass-delete nom, ideally from a page of thumbnails? In a former nom the photos were subcategorized by type of problematicness, so something that would make that easy to do, without spending more time on them, would be good. Being able to search the text would also be useful, as sometimes it is the descriptions that are problematic. Can VisualFileChange or some such do that? Finally, some of the inappropriate texts are in Dutch. Not sure what to do about that; it's not exactly a translation request. I can probably catch a lot of it through intelligent use of a dictionary. HLHJ (talk) 04:28, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

adding new page to Wikipedia

Hi, I have registered as a contributor and have written the text for a new Wiki page for the Soulsville Foundation, which is the nonprofit parent organization that operates the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Stax Music Academy, and The Soulsville Charter School. @Maitribhaav: Hello, unfortunately tou are in the wrong place, you want Wikipedia not commons.
Equally so, Wikipedia is not a site where persons can create profiles or articles about themselves or for publicity and related purposes. (As the various forms of social media might do). Wikipedia reports upon what has been written (in-depth coverage) in multiple independent, reliable sources by persons with no connection to the subject. However, there is no barrier to your creating a draft at Wikipedia which can be submitted for review. However, you should be prepared for it to be a long difficult (and likely unsuccessful) process if writing about yourself. Please sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Photo of artist Walter S. Feldman

I am writing a biography on the significant American modernist artist Walter S. Feldman (1925-2017). In his will he established the Walter S. Feldman Trust for Artwork at Brown University to continue his legacy of art education. Catherine Little Bert of Bert Gallery is the visual arts advisory and curator of that Trust. I am a research assistant working under her direct supervision writing his biography for numerous publications. She has permission from the Trust to use images of the artist, Brown University, and the artist's works to promote the Trust and the artist's legacy. That said I did not personally take the photos of the artist and/his works. They were taken usually by Brown University photographers, or in the case of his art, the artist himself. All he photos I have are previously published in Brown University publications without copyrights. May I upload these photos with the biography? I did not want to claim personal copyright privileges. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArtResearcher1955 (talk • contribs) 15:23, 4 September 2020‎ (UTC)

  • @ArtResearcher1955: "She has permission from the Trust to use images of the artist": too vague for Commons, we need a specific free license for copyrighted material. If copyright has actually been transferred to Brown, or if photographers, their heirs, etc., will grant such a license, great. You can either indicate the specific free license (e.g. CC-BY-SA-4.0) for the image on a page clearly controlled by the copyright-holder (e.g. Brown), and then cite that as a source, or you can go through the COM:OTRS process. Sorry if that is not enough detail: I'm headed out the door right now, someone can follow up if you need more clarification. - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
@ArtResearcher1955: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry for your loss. Please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept the photos as-is, we need permission to protect our users, reusers, and foundation. For each level of permission grant, please have the photographer or other rights-holder post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for that level on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Presumably, from what you wrote, there is a trail of paperwork from artist to trust to curator to you, and also from photographers to university to curator to you, with maybe some unnamed stops in between. Wherever the copyright stopped being transferred, that is the entity that needs to provide permission, and how they got the permission along the trail. Permission can be granted en masse, but we like to have boundaries, such as who would be authorized to make the uploads, what category or categories the photos would be in, the filenames already uploaded, etc. Please feel free to share this information to facilitate the granting of permission.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:48, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

How about a photograph taken by an unknown fellow traveller in 1957 that is in the artist's estate? Is that permissible? For images of Feldman's art we are taking the photos of the work & obviously writing that it is the artist's painting or sculpture etc. Does that mean we have permission to use the image since we took the photo? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArtResearcher1955 (talk • contribs) 16:18, 4 September 2020‎ (UTC)

@ArtResearcher1955: Same answer as above along the trail from the traveler to you. For your photos of the artist's work in the US, you are fine copyright-wise if you have the copyright to the work. Please read COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:53, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

I have one questions about basic adding images from the website with free licence images

Hi I have one question about basic adding images from the website. I found some images which I want to add to Wikipedia here: https://pcsite.co.uk/image-downloads/ there is a note about a free licence. So my question is: do I need to type this website as an author of the image when I'm uploading It to Wikimedia? Whare I should type information about the licence (https://pcsite.co.uk/image-downloads/) when I'm uploading the Image?

Kind Regards Henczuk — Preceding unsigned comment added by Henczuk (talk • contribs) 12:10, 5 September 2020‎ (UTC)

Hi there. When you use this upload function, please add the exact url of the page where you found the image (like this) into the coded template where it says |Source=. At the |Author= parameter, please add PC Site after the = sign. As to the licence, you can pick it from the Licensing drop-down menu below the Summary edit-window and choose "Attribution ShareAlike 4.0". Additionally you may also add the link to the licence https://pcsite.co.uk/image-downloads/ at the |Permission= parameter.

Rename or delete?

Hello - newbie here. I uploaded two files of photos (that I took) a couple of days ago. I would like to replace them with the same pictures with higher resolution and better file names. Should I (1) request name changes first and then overwrite the files with the higher-res images or (2) upload the better images with new file names first and then request deletion of the original files? Thanks. --CMtemCA (talk) 21:11, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

@CMtemCA: Hi, and welcome. I suggest you (3) overwrite the files with the higher-res images per COM:HR first and then request name changes. Why do you want name changes?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:41, 5 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: The files are images of a specific church and I want to include the name of the church in the filenames. The current filenames just say "parish church". CMtemCA (talk) 23:09, 5 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I have overwritten the files with the higher-res images. How do I get the names changed? --CMtemCA (talk) 00:13, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
@CMtemCA: Please use {{Rename}}.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:40, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: OK - On the Rename template, for Parameter 3= should I put a number, e.g. "2", or text, e.g., "more specific name"? Thanks again.--CMtemCA (talk) 19:44, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
@CMtemCA: Parameter 3 is text describing how your request meets the requirements of the numbered criterion in parameter 2.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:24, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Template, JPG download on Internet

Goodnight, I see on Internet an unknown potrait of a medieval king of Naples. Category "Photographs by photographer"

Hi there. There is a category called Photographs by photographer. I've uploaded hundreds of my own photos. Can I create a category for myself? Is there some criteria? Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 18:58, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

@Magnolia677: you certainly can. The relevant policy is at Commons:User-specific galleries, templates and categories#Categories. Just make sure to add {{user category|Magnolia677}} to it to classify it as a user category. I hope that helps! clpo13(talk) 19:11, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

Some Met Museum Images no longer open access

A number of Metropolitan Museum images I downloaded in 2017 that were open access with CC0 license are no longer downloadable or open access on their website. There is now a caption under the images that says "Due to rights restrictions, this image cannot be enlarged, viewed at fullscreen or downloaded." Although most of the images are paintings by Childe Hassam (which Wikimedia Commons has most, if not all, on Wikimedia website with CCO designations), I discovered there are other images I downloaded from The Met that were open access but now have the same restrictions now. I have sent an email to the Met copyright department but no word back yet. Anyone know what might be going on here and what this means to images downloaded with CC0 that are no longer available with that license? Best regards....Artallure (talk) 04:20, 7 September 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Artallure (talk • contribs) 22:45, 6 September 2020‎ (UTC)

Firstly, your actions are fine. The CC0 release was added by the Met, so the action of the uploader will always be legally fine, and the tacit action of Wikimedia Commons continuing to host the file is legally fine too.
Mistakes happen, and if whomever at the Met applied CC0 to files that are genuinely still copyrighted, then those cases can be examined as possible copyright violations when the facts are known. If the files have the original sources, the archived versions may be available on archive.org to verify the original release.
If the Met come back to you, this may be worth sharing, however our experience of GLAM archives is that curators barely have any time to respond to queries and by policy may not want to put in writing any copyright related issues that have any potential of becoming legal issues. So don't be surprised if information is not forthcoming.
Whether Hassam's (d.1935) works published after 1925, have had copyright renewals and might have a rationale to extend copyright to pub date + 95 years, is something that needs a specific discussion with evidence of renewal to check. It's not a default presumption. -- (talk) 05:02, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

The Hassam works were painted in late 1800's and most before 1920. I just now checked the Met Museum Collections website and they have also restricted all the Claude Monet paintings which also were available CC0 in 2017. Thanks for your response Fae. Best wishes Artallure Artallure (talk) 21:02, 7 September 2020 (UTC) 21:00, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Can i upload a million original picture on this platform

Sir... Most respectfully.. you can grant me permission to upload my all real photograph &other activities.. Thanking you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ayush pratap Srivastava (talk • contribs) 07:02, 7 September 2020‎ (UTC)

  • @Ayush pratap Srivastava: While there is no specific limit on how many photographs any one person can upload, the chance that you have a million pictures taken by yourself that are in scope and that you have time to describe well and categorize appropriately is slim at best. I'm one of the most prolific contributors of my own photographs here, with just over 50,000 images over the course of about 15 years. While I wouldn't be surprised if someone, over a lifetime, and with nothing much else to do, could take a million photos worth having here, and upload them with good descriptions and categories, please forgive me if I say that all I've seen of your work so far is one apparent self-portrait poorly described and poorly categorized (what does it even mean to place an image in Category:Google knowledge graph?), so I'm very skeptical that you would have a million images we would want. But feel free to prove me wrong. - Jmabel ! talk 16:12, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Category naming dispute

I am involved in a discussion with another editor over the naming of Danish building categories. He prefers "Category:XXXX Church - Interior" (argueing that he finds it more operational and also used for some Austrian category names) while my view is that "Category:Interior of XXXX Church" is a better name and by far the most common naming practice (used by more or less all other countries), and that consistency is important. It is the same problem with a lot of other categories, such as "Category:XXXX Church - Pulpit"/"Category:Pulpit of XXXX Church". Where and how do we resolve this matter?Ramblersen2 (talk) 15:03, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

  • To my mind, either is perfectly acceptable, and it's a good thing that we can pretty easily rename categories later if we want uniformity. I would certainly suggest that for any given church these should be consistent, and it would be nice if you can come up with more of a standard for the whole country. I really don't think either of these is inherently better, and either standard would be better than no standard. - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
@User:Jmabel or others: Thanks for the reply. When there seems to be a common standard for England, France, Germany and other large countries with many editors and much traffic, I just hjave a very hard time seeing why it shouldn't also apply to Denmark (and Austria) where a single editor has introduced his own scheme based on what he finds easier. Is there no system with Category discussions similar to what is used for resolving such discussions over on Wikipedia?Ramblersen2 (talk) 16:37, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi there. You first need to upload the image here at Commons with a free licence of your choice. Then you add a string of code to the page where the image shall be included, like this: [[:File:SomeFilename.jpg | thumb | This is my logo.]]. Please note though that writing a Wikipedia article about yourself is a bad idea and is strongly discouraged. If and when you or your exploits are notable, someone else will write an article about you in due time. Please see Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. @TopratedChetanbali: Hi, and welcome. "free to use" is not an acceptable license. Please choose an acceptable license from COM:L and upload the full-size original photo, including any metadata. Also, it will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg version which will look sharper, too.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:50, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

Uploading media

I want to upload media that I found useful of a website. I have talk to the owner he is ready to upload it on wikimedia. But want to mention his website name. Can I upload this media Or not? Please help me. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 171.79.51.225 (talk) 19:02, 8 September 2020‎ (UTC)

Allowing use of the media on Wikimedia Commons is not enough. The copyright holder (which may or may not be website owner) must agree to release the media under a free license. The simplest way to do that is to put a license notice right next to the media on their website. The license must allow re-use (including commercial) and modification of the given media, for example {{CC-by-SA-4.0}}. --rimshottalk 19:51, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

How to upload image from another website here on wikipedia ?

I wish to provide a screenshot from a page on uptodate.com. I have an email from uptodate giving me permission to reproduce the said definition on wikipedia!!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Casey577 (talk • contribs) 19:51, 7 September 2020‎ (UTC)

Please note that a permission to republish a work at Wikipedia is not sufficient. Per our licensing policy, all uploads at Commons must be free for anyone to use for any purpose even outside Wikipedia. This includes commercial use and the making of derivatives. Also, since the image has been published before, we need a permission coming directly from the copyright holder by email. I.e. we do not accept forwarded emails. Please see COM:OTRS for instructions. Another, faster way would be for the copyright holder to grant a free licence for the image at uptodate.com. Once that is online over there, we can verify the licence and you may upload the image here at Commons. De728631 (talk) 22:16, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

The permission is only for using here at wikipedia. Anyway i don't intend to post it here or anywhere else for public use. Its meant merely as a "source" for a definition used here at wikipedia. The definition however comes from a paid page of uptodate.com to which i have access because i am their paid member. Hence i thought of posing a screenshot of that page here as an image so that editors of the concerned wikipedia page may crosscheck if they wish so ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Casey577 (talk • contribs) 18:56, 8 September 2020‎ (UTC)

Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. If you change the summaries or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Flinfo for Mushroom Observer no longer works

Flinfo was very useful for downloading mushroom photos to Commons, but it has stopped working for Mushroom Observer. If I either (1) set "Photo ID"=1130292 and "Image repository"=Mushroom Observer, or if I (2) set "URL"=http://mushroomobserver.org/image/show_image?id=1130292, I just get the message "Problem while retrieving image 1130292". ?Urheber wdt:P170 wd:Q15080600.

It returns everything I want but in an unexpected way:

Urheber UrheberLabel Lizenz LizenzLabel
sdc:M371354 M371354 wd:Q50829104 Q50829104

What I want to see is:

Urheber UrheberLabel Lizenz LizenzLabel
sdc:M371354 Wiedereröffnung der S-Bahn Berlin am Bahnhof Eichkamp wd:Q50829104 GNU-Lizenz für freie Dokumentation Version 1.2 oder später

Just getting the same but unlinked for the label is not useful as you can imagine. It will be great if someone could assist in getting the label instead of the page id. I plan to upload two illustrations from a copyright-expired book (Modelling by w:Édouard Lantéri, 1905). I also plan to OCR the accompanying text (two pages), to quote in an en.wikipedia article. I note that Wikimedia does not already have this book uploaded (I have checked Wikicommons (Category:Edouard Lanteri), WikiiWikibooks and wikisource.)

It occurs to me that there may be a more useful (to Wikimedia) way to contribue than to just take the default action (uploading as an isolated image), that it could contribute to something more. Is it enough just to add the images to that Commons category, or can I do anything more effective? Obviously I have neither the time nor the motivation to scan the whole book. Should I contribute the text of the two pages to Commons too and, if so, how? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 23:32, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

You don't need to scan the whole book since Archive.org has already done that with the 1904 edition. So you might want to upload the full PDF version. After that we can still extract single pages or images as needed. Would that be an option? De728631 (talk) 23:45, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank you, I didn't know about archive.org having done it so that may save me a lot of work, if I can extract the pages I want from it. No, I was never going to scan the book! Let me see how I get on, if need be I will revisit this section. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 22:56, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
I have found the material I want (https://archive.org/details/modellingguidefo00lant/page/100/mode/2up pp 100 - 110). I want to put at least the image on p101 into an en.wikipedia article, as an easily expandable thumbnail. I have extracted it as a jpg file: do I have to upload it to Commons first? [feel free to tell me to ask at wikipedia help desk!] Thank you again for your help! --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 23:25, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
{ping|John Maynard Friedman}} When you say, "do I have to upload it to Commons first," "first" as in before what? If you are uploading an image of something that is public domain, Commons would be the place to upload it. - Jmabel ! talk 02:22, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
I mean "before I can use the image at en.wikipedia, using the file: technique". AFIK, that only works for images somewhere in Wikimedia. Daft question, evidently I already know the answer. I will upload it from archive.org, I see the Lanteri category already exists.
So what about the text? I want it to be open to sight-impaired visitors, so it has to be machine-readable text (not an image of text). I can use Google Lens to OCR it, but how do I upload a text file? Is it just another kind of media? Can [should?] it be .txt or does it have to be .pdf? [I'm showing my ignorance here! can a PDF be machine readable text and not just images of text?] --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 21:27, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
I've just read COM:FT as advised to another enquirer (below) but I'm not much the wiser. If I read it correctly, Commons is not a suitable repository for text and I should use Wikisource. Will they be interested in my ten pages from a 250 pp book? Surely it would be the whole book or nothing? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 21:32, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

File in question is official photo from the Red Army file of the person in question (circa 1940). Under Russian copyright law it is free. Are there any problems with Wikimedia? Please advise. Basicowes (talk) 19:16, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

@Basicowes: You need to add a license template to indicate why the image is public domain, under the "Licensing" heading. In this case, {{PD-Russia}} is probably the template you are looking for, if you can be sure the image meets one of the requirements listed on that template. After doing that, you can remove the warning templates. – BMacZero (🗩) 19:31, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
Actually, it should rather be {{PD-Russia-1996}}, which is URAA-safe. Putting a photo in a file is not publishing, however, so I'm not quite sure how much time has passed since publication. Was this ever published in a book or so? Did the book name the photographer? @Basicowes: by which copyright rule do you think this is PD in Russia? --rimshottalk 19:44, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. Done {{PD-Russia-1996}}. Re PD in Russia: This is official government material which is PD by definition. Basicowes (talk) 13:37, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

@Andrewhainesmusic: Do I understand correctly that you violated en:WP:Conflict of interest and you are coming here to Commons (a separate project from Wikipedia, though also umbrella'd by the Wikimedia Foundation) demanding that we do something about the fact that they have a policy that people may not write articles about themselves? I'm sorry if my tone sounds harsh, but I can't help you with wanting to do something directly against a project's policies.

Uploading original work

When an image of my own original work is uploaded, it refuses with the error that it is not my original work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RichardDemers (talk • contribs) 06:44, 11 September 2020‎ (UTC)

@RichardDemers: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your website or social media or send permission via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:34, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

Appreciate that. I built a free website. I went to the website I built and did a screen capture of an image on a website that I am 100% responsibile for, and if I can find my way back, I can find the original which won't be in PNG format. Hello,

I am one of the writers of Wikipedia's page Build the Earth, and I uploaded these two files to help provide some content and color to the page. However, I have recently recieved notice that these files are under copyright strike or have the wrong licensing. But I have a few questions, which may help me reupload these in the future.

  • How do I upload and properly attribute a picture of Minecraft taken by another user?
  • How do I properly attribute a GIF logo without knowing who created it (nobody on the BTE staff knows exactly who created it).
  • What are the guidelines for uploading a file that is found on Discord (supposedly free domain)

All of the people helping me have told me that all the pictures are in free domain since they were posted on Discord.--ArmageddonAviation (talk) 22:20, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

  • @Jeff G.: The only copyright issue I could imagine here is if the Ministry of Public Health logo is copyrighted, and we could easily remove that. Otherwise, tabular data that doesn't call for judgement is generally not copyrighted. So I'd go for {{PD-ineligible}} rather than {{PD-Lebanon}}.

It sounds like they have "guidelines" (distinct from their "KDP Terms and Conditions"?) that require that you hold exclusive rights. Which of course is impossible by definition for content under a free license. N.B.: Your question does not seem directly related to Commons. You might find more information on Wikipedia. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:48, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
It looks like an automated check for matching content on the web. I don't know how exactly the CC share-alike works for excerpts, perhaps the entire book must be under the same license. Maybe providing a link to the Wikipedia license would be sufficient, and a copy of the license should be included in the book. Depending on whether their review process can handle such complexity [1]. --ghouston (talk) 03:08, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

I sent a message to kdp providing all the proofs that I think to have rights to use wikipedia documents under cc share-alike policy (considering also that I am among the authors of the used documents). They still insist to refuse the publication saying that I do not have EXCLUSIVE rights What do you think ? Any suggestion to further support my request? Below is reported their reply.

Change license of an upload

Hi! I uploaded a couple of images I made. However, attribution is not needed. Is it possible to change from CC to CC0? If so, how do I do so? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dan Fran B (talk • contribs) 19:04, 12 September 2020‎ (UTC)

Yes, you could do that if the images were copyrightable. However, in the case of the two images you uploaded, they seem ineligible to copyright, so you can just remove the CC template and add the template PD-ineligible or some other template for images that are PD by nature. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:21, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

Uploading file marked Public Domain from website

I would like to use an image from the website http://www.collections.musee-bretagne.fr/ The website shows "Marque du Domaine Public Amanlis château du Bois-Tilleul Carte postale" The Upload Wizard offers the option to check CC0 Waiver (release all rights, like public domain). Is that sufficient to allow use of the image?--CMtemCA (talk) 21:15, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

  • Not in and of itself (it's a good sign, but museums have been known to get things wrong), and it is definitely not CC-0. Could you possibly link the page that has the particular image so someone can see what you are trying to upload? - Jmabel ! talk 23:12, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: OK - here's the link to the image I want to use: http://www.collections.musee-bretagne.fr/ark:/83011/FLMjo173035 Also, here's the page that explains their "philosophy" of sharing images in their collection: http://www.collections.musee-bretagne.fr/message_info.php (It's all in French.)--CMtemCA (talk) 00:16, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
  • It's a bit odd that there is no date on that. Given that, it's hard to know with confidence the basis for their claim that it is in the public domain. For Commons, it needs to be public domain in both the country of origin (France) and the U.S. The latter is pretty safe -- by the style, this is almost certainly before 1925, so it's {{PD-US-expired}}. It looks like it is anonymous, so I guess {{PD-France}} would apply; the thing is, if there is a known author, and that author lived to 1950 or later, it would still be copyrighted in France. @Clindberg: do you think it's safe to assume this is truly anonymous? Or perhaps is there a basis to date it far enough back for {{PD-old-assumed}}? - Jmabel ! talk 02:36, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
@CMtemCA: You must find information about the photographer or the year of publication or ideally both. The copy at musee-bretagne doesn't provide the information. You can look if you can find the information somewhere else. Often, useful sources are commercial websites dealing in old postcards. For example, you can find this webpage [2] at delcampe.net. It shows an earlier edition of the same postcard. From the details you can see that it is the same photo: angle, shadows, vegetation. It is said to have circulated in 1906. There is no photo of the back of that postcard, but there is no reason to doubt the description by the seller. You can also see on the right side of this edition of the postcard that it mentions the photographer "Aubrée" and the publisher is the editions "Mary-Rousselière". The website wiki-rennes, in its list of publishers [3], mentions the publisher Mary-Rousselière and also mentions that the publisher Lamiré bought the stock of Mary-Rousselière in the 1920s. So, the copy of the postcard published by Lamiré that interests you at musee-bretagne is a later republication of the photo by Aubrée first published by Mary-Rousselière. The creative material is the photograph, so it is important for Commons to indicate the year of first publication of the photo. So, in the description page of the file on Commons, in the "date" field, you can explain the situation and write that the photo is from "before 1907", you can use the delcampe.net webpage as a reference, and that your undated copy is from a later republication by Lamiré possibly in the 1920s. You can use the template "PD-US-expired" to indicate the status of the work in the United States. In the same list, wiki-rennes also mentions Aubrée as a photographer having collaborated with the publisher Mary-Rousselière, but the list provides no more details. However, musee-bretagne also has works by the photographer Jules Aubrée (1879-1933) [4]. My guess would be that it is probably the same person. If it is, the Commons tag for the status of the work in France is "PD-old-80". You should do some research and see if you can find if it is the same person or not. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:01, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
Fully agreed. This postcard in particular was published without an author credit, so was published anonymously. I had found the mention that the publisher of this card, A. Lamiré, had purchased another collection in the 1920s, meaning this publication dated from that era. But, it was likely a republication of an earlier postcard, and then the question becomes was there an author mentioned on an earlier publication. I had not yet found the earlier one, but Asclepias helpfully did. That was not published anonymously, meaning the work is not anonymous, we would need to find the author's lifetime (and if research fails on that, it would have to be over 120 years old, which this is probably not just yet). The photographer Asclepias found above was in Rennes [5] and had his own studio there, which is the same city the earlier publisher was in, so that does seem strongly likely. If they are the same person, the full license could then be {{PD-old-auto-expired|deathyear=1933}}, which covers both the French and U.S. copyright, given that this was published in (at latest) 1906. Carl Lindberg (talk) 14:05, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel, Asclepias, and Clindberg: Thanks to all of you for your thorough explanations and research on my behalf. I was not aware that one can’t rely on a museum’s information regarding copyright on items in their collections. I have not been able to find any information on Jules Aubrée, but I did find the following regarding the picture: Ministere de la Culture [6] Region Bretagne: Inventaire Général du Patrimoine Culturel [7] Immatriculation IVR53_19883500014XB; Copyrights (c) Inventaire général, ADAGP; Diffusion: reproduction soumise à autorisation du titulaire des droits d'exploitation; Auteur de l'illustration: Auteur inconnu. So, if I understand correctly, the government websites show that they don’t know who the photographer is, but a copyright is held by ADAGP [8] which collects royalties for artists. Is that right? If so, I will just forgo using the image.--CMtemCA (talk) 22:01, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
Qu'est-ce que c'est que cette arnaque de l'ADAGP ? Lorsque les droits d'auteur patrimoniaux sont expirés, ils sont expirés. C'est précisément le principe. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:19, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
@CMtemCA: I'm with Asclepias here. I honestly don't see how ADAGP could have come to hold the copyright, or how copyright could even persist. That smacks of "copyfraud" to me. Per the above, it seems almost certain that the author Aubrée died in 1933, and that {{PD-old-auto-expired|deathyear=1933}} applies. - Jmabel ! talk 23:29, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
@CMtemCA: If an institution like that museum says it is public domain, we will usually trust that -- as far as being PD in France goes. The U.S. copyright has its own set of complications, where the publishing date is quite important -- but also, possibly, the copyright status in France as of 1996. So if that was a 1928 postcard where the author died in 1933, it would be fine in France but would still have a couple years of U.S. copyright left. But being published before 1925 solves that as well. Once we found the author on that earlier publication, it is a good idea to try and verify the life dates (even careful institutions make mistakes, and they may not have found the named author and assumed the anonymous term). As for ADAGP, agreed with the others above, that seems as though they are trying to claim a copyright on the digitization, which Commons does not recognize (see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag). The copyright on the original would seem to have expired, so there is nothing to own or collect royalties for. If something is within 70 years of the original publication with an unknown author, they might well collect royalties like that. But this is not. Carl Lindberg (talk) 03:17, 11 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel, Asclepias, and Clindberg: I did some more research and found the following in the archive of the L'Ouest-Éclair newspaper of October 22, 1933 confirming that a Jules Aubrée had recently died in Rennes. [9] “RENNES. Mme J. Aubrée. M. e* Mme Marcel Aubrée. M. et Mme Lucien Aubrée, M. et Mme EmUe Legendre, profondément émus des nombreuses marques de sympathie témoignées à l'occasion du décès de Monsieur Jules AUBREE …” So, to summarize, we can assume that the photograph at the Musee de Bretagne was first published in 1906 based on the information at delcampe.net found by Asclepias (above #1). We can also assume that the picture was taken by Jules Aubrée, who died in 1933. We can ignore ADAGP’s copyright claim. Therefore, I can upload the picture I found on the Musee de Bretagne website using {{PD-old-auto-expired|deathyear=1933}} Also, in the description page of the file on Commons, in the "date" field, I will note that the photo is from "before 1907", using the delcampe.net webpage as a reference, and specify that the undated copy is from a later republication by Lamiré possibly in the 1920s. OK? Anything else? Thanks again! — Preceding unsigned comment added by CMtemCA (talk • contribs) 21:38, 11 September 2020‎ (UTC)
@CMtemCA: Seems good to me -- I didn't mean you had to double-check the life dates once they were found, but it all helps :-) Just check that the author did did more than 70 years ago, that's all. (It's always aggravating when we know the author name but don't have the life dates... which does happen.) [And actually France was 50pma + wartime extensions (8 years and change) so that period from 1933 would have also expired before the U.S. URAA date in 1996, meaning it would have been OK even if published in 1928. Moot because it's from 1906 at the latest.] Carl Lindberg (talk) 01:23, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

@NotTheGiantPeach: Hi, and welcome. — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:31, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Thank you, I will try the upload wizard. The image was created by me using the map creator in Wikimedia. I will also try using JPEG format. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NotTheGiantPeach (talk • contribs) 19:24, 15 September 2020‎ (UTC)

I'm intending to update some logos of US Government agencies as their designs have changed. The outdated logo files currently have names such as "Gov Agency logo.svg". I'm assuming I do not overwrite the file as the old design should be kept. But I am not sure about the logistics of doing it. Should I submit a rename request to something like "Gov Agency logo 2009-2015.svg" and then upload the new logo under the original name? or should I do something else? Thanks! affius (talk) 13:30, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

@Affius: Personally, I'd go for uploading the new one under a new name (probably with just the date of introduction in it, so "Gov Agency Logo 2016.svg") and leaving the old one at its existing name. I think renaming the old one would be just about allowable under criterion 2 on the basis that it's ambiguous, but I don't think it's necessary. --bjh21 (talk) 13:43, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
@Bjh21: Thank you. Yes, my goal is to decrease ambiguity and make it obvious which logo is the one currently being used. affius (talk) 17:16, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Today I have tried to upload a newer version of the Seal of Phitsanulok Province. But in stat of the newer version of the seal, a 2019 version from the Phitsanulok Annual Report, the old seal of 1939 was duplicated again. I keep the filename unchanged: Seal Phitsanulok.png. The int.license-header should be: {{PD-TH-exempt}}, because all reports of Thai governments are "not copyrighttable" (Public Domain). Maybe you can help to correct this duplication. make a list of experts to ask

Everyone has different knowledge and is a different expert in something else. I would prefer a list of Experts maybe similar to w:de:Wikipedia:Wikipedianer/nach_Wissensgebieten/Ingenieurwissenschaften.

  • I'm an expert in librSVG-render-bugs and would like to help here, however it is "impossible" to watch/check different Help-Desks/Grapic-Labs/SVG-Project-Discussion-Pages/... especially because many of them are on local wikis.
  • I sometimes need help with complex templates, therefore I ask e.g User:Sarang
  • As a uploader, I often have problems in deciding if something is below COM:TOO or not, and would like to ask someone with more knowledge in this field.
  • As a Bot-Mantainer I currently have problems commandline-uploading Images from toolforge.org to commons

It is obligatory for every Admin, to specify there language on Commons:Administrators aswell on the user-page, to be able to ask an admin to talk to users in their individual language. However I never had problems with users not speaking my languages, but I often had problems that I did not found any user with specific knowledge (SVG,copyright, toolforge,Strutured Data,...) to ask, therefore I would like to start a list. Maybe at Commons:Help_desk/Experts?

I can't locate where the email address and website URL that appear on my image's metadata are coming from. They don't appear anywhere in my preferences. Any ideas?

Bob Ramsak, they're usually generated by the camera. Alternatively they can be added by various bits of software. Nothing to do with Wikimedia Commons anyway. -mattbuck (Talk) 20:24, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

My account was bloked radically in Japan

• My name is Mitsunori Tomohiro, living in Japan. As writing in the title, My account Aso789 has been blocked eternally because of vandal editing “Yamaguchi-city”. As in those days, I was beginner. So my edition and discussion had some inadequacy. However, I never had evil thought. I only thought the article make better. But Bsx(account) change my edit to presents his thoughts soon after many times, and he regarded me vandal. Then he proposed my block and actually blocked. After that, I decided in the note. Another persons added. My edition has no vandal factor, even if, there was inadequate situation. But they regarded me vandal, and supported my block .I wrote my thoughts, but many participants made me evil, and vandal. Finally blocked eternally. I can only do to made another account(for example)IP:240b:253:5061:1400::/64(会話 / 投稿記録 / 記録 / Whois IPv4 ・ IPv6) • IP:240b:253:5061:1400:b9fd:7d2b:3ed8:7fae(会話 / 投稿記録 / 記録 / Whois IPv4 ・ IPv6) • IP:240b:253:5061:1400:b0ac:e625:a916:356b(会話 / 投稿記録 / 記録 / Whois IPv4 ・ IPv6) • IP:240b:253:5061:1400:8c7f:db6a:5e5e:73b9(会話 / 投稿記録 / 記録 / Whois IPv4 ・ IPv6) • IP:240B:253:5061:1400:3460:8711:AB1D:497F(会話 / 投稿記録 / 記録 / Whois IPv4 ・ IPv6) to say my real thoughts. .But situation is worse and worse .l am not vandal, only to Wikipedia make better and better. Almost all Japanese veterans wikhpedian do not really know Wikipedia's rule . Many of them cannot know difference between inadequate without evil thought and vandal. Now maybe for eternal, I can't discuss in Japanese. Only I can do is send the SOS for you. Not only me but also many new persons made vandal without enough reason. In Japanese Wikipedia have no mediation committee . So, it is impossible to resolve there problem. There is little or no self-cleaning action., Only global can help Japanese Wikipedia and make better . Please help me, and many Japanese People,. Please.

As in Japan for example, editors or administrator often use wikipedian rule use for own.. Bsx blame me because of original study .But he write original study soon after I edited without refinement..This is instance he write Yamaguchi City has not centripetal force because it be sandwiched large city. However he write no reference, only to original study, I point outed this, but he mock my induction. Only to edit based on his thought. In the end there has some original thought by Bsx .

In Japanese Wikipedia , I cannot sad my opinion perfectly. Because I blocked including based on rule misunderstanding of wiki by editors and administrator not enough understanding.

I want unlock my ID or IP(If all block are impossible please unblock only to note pege to discuss with high quality) I hope you help me from Japanese wikipoedians without gentleman mind. Because it is enable to understand each other without discuss blissfully, surely and academic enough. But I mostly hope Japanese wikipoedia become better and better.

I received a mail from you that it is Japanese problem .It is true, however very few Japanese wikipedians can realize. As written in "https://jp.mg5.mail.yahoo.co.jp/neo/launch?.rand=6cdbmecrj4d9m#tb=56us08cb" which is written in Japanese, this problem is knotty problem. Only Japanese volunteer stuffs are not be to slove the problem. Global help is need, really need.Mostly I hope is not my block released, but orderly Japanese Wkipedia.Current status has often lawless zone. Human right violation must be removed. Please help Japanese people. Please.--Cllassical million (talk) 13:40, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Help with making a file smaller please

Please help again - The file of a crest (scarlet and white colours) is on the very top of the wikipedia page titled "Lupton family". It should be slightly smaller. Please adjust if you can. Your help is really appreciated. I have tried with the encouragement of your editor - but no good on this device. Please assist and make the file a little smaller. Thanks 175.33.139.143 23:24, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

  • Convenience link: en:Lupton family.
  • I'm not sure of your intention here. It is the standard size of a thumbnail. If users have their preferences set up to set a different thumbnail size, it will change in accordance with their preferences.
  • If you set an explicit size, then users' preferences are going to be frustrated. Why would you want to do that? Usually the only reason we would set an explicit size is if something, on the one hand, specifically needs to be large to be legible or, on the other, is so low-resolution that it will only reproduce correctly at a small size.
  • If you want to set the thumbnail to a particular width, then you can do it, but as I say I recommend against it. Instead of "…|thumb|…" you can use, for example, "…|thumb|150px|…"
  • In any case, these are entirely Wikipedia issues not Commons issues. - Jmabel ! talk 04:05, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

My first image upload to Wikipedia/Wikimedia: Uploaded an SVG for FC Utrecht (association football club).

Hello Wikipedia contributor,

Thanks for taking the time to read my question.

I already had some experience editing a wiki (experienced contributor and reviewer on liquipedia.net) before making my first edits on the 'real Wikipedia' a few days ago, with the goal to improve the accuracy and quality of information provided by Wikipedia on for example, association football.

I today tried to upload a logo for association football club FC Utrecht from the Netherlands, as they use a special anniversary logo for the ongoing 2020-2021 season and that version of the logo is currently used on Eredivisie broadcasts all over the world.

I saw most other football club logos were uploaded in a SVG format and I wondered what's needed for this logo to display correctly once I upload it in a SVG format to Wikimedia Commons, since when I take a look now all I see is an empty space of pixels, which is obviously not the goal since I want to upload the current version of FC Utrecht's logo to Wikimedia Commons to eventually update it on the club's Wikipedia page.

At Liquipedia (liquipedia.net) where my previous experience comes from, we work with PNG files. That may be one of the reasons why I'm having troubles here.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to read my question, and I look forward to hearing an answer.

Are subcategories exclusive of each other?

Hi. I am finding your category organization very cumbersome to use for browsing. If I look up a particular artist (not an artist with a Page), I then have to jump back and forth between numerous subcategories. Maybe this is just the way it is, but I would rather see all the files at once. It might be too much for very famous artists, but for relatively obscure ones?

My main question is this: If there is a subcategory level for paintings in varius museums and another equal level for the same artist arranged by date, are these the same files in both or are they exclusive? Or does it depend on who entered them?

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Liz

To answer the main question first: if there are categories for the museum and for the date, a painting should be categorized in both. It should also be categorized by artist and topic. If there is more than one photograph of a painting, it is a good idea to have a category for the painting and add parent categories to that, e.g. Category:Samson and Delilah (Rembrandt). Most artist will have a category with all of their works, like Category:Works by Rembrandt. You can then use PetScan to see all images of all subcategories, if you set the depth high enough. --rimshottalk 21:27, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

Adapted image CC BY-SA 2.0

Hello, I want to upload to CC an adapted (cropped) version of an image already on CC, which is marked by the CC BY-SA 2.0 license. However, the Upload Wizard does not show that license among the choices, the closest thing being CC BY-SA 2.5. Can someone tell me how to proceed with my upload? Should I just go with the 2.5? Thanks! Assambrew (talk) 05:22, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

You can use a tool like CropTool, which I think can keep the same license. Or you can add the license manually. Or you could ignore the Upload Wizard and use the basic form. Or an argument might be made that you could use version 2.5 or 3.0 or 4.0 if you consider the crop as a "derivative work", but a simple crop can be considered closer to the original work and to me it seems preferable to keep the version 2.0. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:47, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Picture deleted Tatiana Laurence Delarue

How is it possible to prove that it is a selfie and publish it ? I understood that it is impossible to publish a photo.

Aucune photo n'est acceptée. Comment faire ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Justfree1958 (talk • contribs) 16:13, 17 September 2020‎ (UTC)

  • @Justfree1958: I assume this is about either File:Tatiana-Laurence Delarue.jpg or File:Tatiana elfie smiling.jpg.
  • These appear to be the same photo. When a photo is deleted, do not upload it under a different name. This could get you blocked.
  • When you say, "prove that it is a selfie and publish it" are you saying that you are this person and this is your selfie?
    • If so, there are two possibilities: (1) publish the photo on a page that is clearly under your control (e.g. your Instagram account) and offer the free license there; then reference that page as the source when uploading to Commons. That is probably easiest. (2) Go through the process described at COM:OTRS or COM:OTRS/fr.
    • If this is not you, then the picture being a selfie has nothing to do with the matter, other than making it very easy to identify the photographer to have them use one of the two means above to give permission.

@Justfree1958: I see what you mean now: [11]. However, a statement like that or along the lines of "okay for Wikipedia" is not acceptable for our purposes. The photo needs to be explicitly released under a free license such as the ones listed at COM:L#Well-known licenses / COM:L/fr#Licences courantes. The best way to do this is via COM:OTRS, though I suppose an Instagram post with a notice like those suggested here is just as acceptable. Note that Instagram doesn't allow links in the description, however. clpo13(talk) 17:36, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
The media copy mentioned to justify the speedy deletion acknowledges that the source is the Instagram source. It does look like a selfie by the subject of the photo. I understand the mention "wiki vérifié" associated with this photo at the original source as a short mention meaning "I hereby verify the license associated with this photo on Wikimedia". Which was probably a way to conform to the possibility "(1)" evoked by Jmabel above, although not using the letter of the suggestion. Sure, it would be better if the mention was directly the identification of the license. So, it may still be useful either to name the license on Instagram or to send confirmation to OTRS. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:01, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
Or if User:Justfree1958 is Tatiana Laurence Delarue (which I take it is the case) then Tatiana can indicate that on her Instagram account, at which point we know that a selfie uploaded by User:Justfree1958 doesn't need any more scrutiny of license than any normal upload by any other user.
@Clpo13: OTRS is not necessarily the preferred way to verify identity; it's the only way to do confidential correspondence, which is often needed in order to verify identity, but it's cumbersome and time-consuming. It's quicker for all concerned if we can verify identity by publicly available means that don't require time from the OTRS team, who are always busy and backlogged. - Jmabel ! talk 23:36, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Uploads by a particular user

How do I search for all files in a specific category uploaded by a particular user? Or those in a specific category *not* uploaded by a particular user? I know about incategory: but I can't find how to include the uploader in the search Thanks Kognos (talk) 19:36, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

How to search for individual images in a specific category?

The question is not very specific. But if you wanted to search for image files about fishing in the River Severn you could use: "incategory:"River Severn" fishing". Unless I am missing something? Kognos (talk) 20:57, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Getty Images via AFP

Hi!! ^_^ . I am back at it again with a question about upload. I like many issues of activism and found This image under "Commercial and other uses licenses" and it belongs to Getty Images via AFP. My question is, how do I find out under which specific license is it under?, if you may ask who they are, they are Hong Kong activists (from Left to right) Sunny Cheung, Jimmy Sham and Nathan Lau. It's an important photo that represents last pro-democracy election in HK. That's why my interest in uploading it. Thank you very very much. --CoryGlee (talk) 20:56, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Where does it specify that this image is under "Commercial and other uses licenses"? --Wcam (talk) 21:02, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
Wcam, Hi! in google I searched under the name "Jimmy Sham and Sunny Cheung Getty images" and in preferences I selected "Under commercial and other uses licenses" and it showed up ^_^ --CoryGlee (talk) 21:20, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
See here for an explanation of Google Image Search's "Commercial and other uses licenses", which include licenses that are most likely non-free thus not compatible with Wikimedia Commons. Regarding this particular image, it is definitely NOT a free image. --Wcam (talk) 21:29, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:40, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

How do I avoid these errors when using the 'Upload file' page?

This is the text I am including in 'Summary' and I get both errors:

These are "over enthusiastic" categories for which there is no meaningful consensus to force them on the entire contents of the Wikimedia Commons project. As the most active uploader to Commons I ignore them as pointless and disruptive. The system of license templates is not being replaced, and if anyone wanted to create a license database, they could do that by harvesting the current system. There never has been a convincing explanation as to why this change is being forced on everyone.
No extra work is expected of any uploader to duplicate these details by playing around with the experimental SDC tags. Ignore them please. -- (talk) 16:21, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

I have foto graph material from a tour, which allowed schematics and that of dam design and tunnels

Hi,

I have post shots of dam designs, which allow to publically take photos of. However, this information is very important for people to learn about. Only those that may visit the site by chance may know of it, there is not other information.

I would like to upload as is photos of the posters on a presentation at the dam, which can only be seen on-site and are typically 6 hours away from those it affects and know really know about.

Which allow for people to learn more about it.

There basically is no information on who compiled it, just been there for many years, until there a fire and be gone.

Here is a link, to the photos: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xBjU72tcOnIR9vqwCxRemJzT1tk3lm4d?usp=sharing

How does this play with wiki copyright laws.

Kind Regards,

@Wesley olis: Hi, and welcome. Please see COM:L and COM:DW.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:31, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Well as far as I can tell, the medium in this folder is basically public on display at the dam, free entrance and allow take pictures of anything and was encouraged to do so. I don't see any reference to anything presented on the pin boards. With this basically being a public display, however, contained in a dam wall, so certain visitation hours pertaining to staff being there. I would say that I should be able to upload this information, potentially add a reference as the public display at the dam facility. Would I be able to also verbatim re-type the text into I not sure where or how your policies are for this into a digital dialog of what appears on some of the images, for those that may struggle to read the resource material?

I don't thing there will be any issues to making this material more accessible.

I would like your opinion on how I could go about or if could given any direction on doing text memo description for each photo. Which would assist search engines and those may struggle to read a line or two.

I looking forward to hearing back from you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wesley olis (talk • contribs) 19:51, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

These pictures appear to be indoors. Offhand, I don't know any country in the world that allows freedom of panorama for materials like this on indoor public display, so the fact of that public display is irrelevant to the copyright status of these images. Is there any basis to think these images are public domain or free-licensed? I would think they would not be. - Jmabel ! talk 01:46, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
@Wesley olis: These pictures destined for cat:Gariep Dam are of poor quality. Also, the subjects are probably still copyrighted, as construction ran from 1965 to 1971 and COM:CRT/South Africa indicates {{PD-South-Africa}} may be used for photos published over 50 years ago, but not for the diagrams and texts, those copyrights run for "Life + 50 years", so we would need info on the names and lifetimes of the authors of the diagrams and texts, or wait until after 1971+120=2091.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:46, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff: Hi, thank you for getting back to me. Typically if a recall from school, if one made a poster one would have to have there credentials on it, for copyright stuff. So if a poster has zero names on a document, is there a copyright? If someone wanted to copy write something then, basically should put the author's details on it otherwise it would be free-licensed in my mind. Well basically institutions that don't want pictures of there stuff ending on facebook, shared with friends, social media extra, typically prohibte taking of pictures in the first place of anything. So in such cases, is no other way to document this information because typically wiki wants references to the source material. Then just to clarify as well, because come across another source is there the ability to reference a diagram on another site with an anchor or inline that with reference. If someone knows the information and basically wants to document it on wiki, and well there is no official book, because he is not going to ever writer and publish a book, how do we preserve that public information? Just ask, trying to figure out what is possible and not because at the end of the day stuff like this needs be publically documented as is History of a country. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wesley olis (talk • contribs) 07:26, 22 September 2020‎ (UTC)

@Wesley olis: Actually, as the dam was commissioned and is run by the Water Affairs Department of the Republic of South Africa per File:GC Gariep Dam (7).JPG and en:Gariep Dam, the original texts and drawings may be subject to {{PD-SAGov}}, or they may be newer and still copyrighted, or copyrighted by the contractor, Dumez, a French construction company. Requirements of notice, registration, and renewal on copyrighted works in the US went away March 1, 1989 when the US joined the Berne Convention per COM:US; many other countries joined much earlier. Please follow our COM:SIGN policy.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:49, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

Clarification on removal of video

Hi,

The following item was flagged and removed as source of derivative work is not properly indicated - https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Remember_The_Plankinton.webm&action=edit&redlink=1

After I was notified of the copyright issue I went in and edited the item and updated the source field to cite works used with permission in the video. I'm not sure why the item was removed when I updated the source field as instructed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Volkswriter (talk • contribs) 21:25, 22 September 2020‎ (UTC)

Yes, that was the reason I deleted it. I could/should have modified the deletion summary, sorry for that. --JuTa 22:57, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
  • So what do I need to do to show you I have a free license to use the content? Send you e-mail from the Marquette archives? Also the music is from Soundzabound Music Library which is a royalty free music site. The music is cited in the video per their usage agreement. I'm not sure what else you need regarding that. - Volkswriter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Volkswriter (talk • contribs) 23:11, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
    • @Volkswriter: At this point this probably would best be handled through Commons:Undeletion_requests. If the rights are all in order, I'm sure we can get it back.
    • For Marquette: if they don't indicate a free license on their site, then probably they need to go through the process outlined at COM:OTRS. Yes, that mainly consists of sending an email from the Marquette archives. I would say do that first, before you proceed with anything else.
    • With reference to Soundzabound Music Library, "Royalty free" may not be good enough, but the Help Desk isn't where we'll be able to sort it out. There needs to be an explicit statement that commercial & derivative works are allowed.
    • @JuTa: it looks like this is likely to work out, but I suspect Volkswriter might need some help. Would you be willing to be available if they have further questions? I'm pretty swamped right now. - Jmabel ! talk 16:05, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

  • Probably merits a CFD open for at least a week, and pinging the creators of both categories; in case something non-obvious is going on that would give someone time to explain. - Jmabel ! talk 16:16, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Is it possible to edit the information provided during the uploading of the resource?

--RealSvejk (talk) 18:07, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

This is a Wiki, everyone can edit (almost) everything, just hit "edit" on the image page :) . The more difficult question is which license to choose. The artwork was apparently created by Josef Lada, who died in 1957. The Czech republic has a copyright duration of 70 years from the death of the author, which means that this is still copyrighted. Unless I'm missing something, the file needs to be deleted. --rimshottalk 22:03, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

I was trying to update the picture for Dutch letters as the current one isn't a Dutch letter. Rather, the image is of a different thing called banketstaaf in the shape of an S. Being the pedantic I am, I had to get it changed. So, I emailed a bakery in my area that made Dutch letters and I specifically asked if I could use it on Wikipedia. They said that I was free to use the image in question. Am I able to use it or does the bakery itself have to confirm usage with some sort of Wikipedia email? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Teeuwis (talk • contribs) 22:58, 23 September 2020‎ (UTC)

Help in uploading logo of school

I want to upload the logo of a school to its wikipedia article provided in the school website. But I'm not sure whether it would violate any copyright.
Please help me with that and please mention the correct logo format (jpg or png or any other). G C Dey (talk) 09:02, 24 September 2020 (UTC)G C Dey

  • @G C Dey: Typically, unless the school has had the logo for well over a century, the logo of a school would be copyrighted and Commons would need permission of the copyright-holder. However, if the purpose of this is for an article on the English-language Wikipedia, you can handle this entirely on the English-language Wikipedia using en:Template:Non-free logo, and leave Commons out of it. - Jmabel ! talk 15:29, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

Question about images

I am practicing in my user sandbox, preparing to create a church history page. My questions:

1) Can the work I do in the sandbox easily translate to a true Wiki article for publishing, or will I have to re-create everything in an actual article page? 2) I would like to include organizational affiliation status in my Infobox. I used Template: Infobox Church, and added three fields (local affiliation, state affiliation, national affiliation). How can I ensure these fields with added information will be part of my InfoBox? 3) I read the requirements regarding uploading photos. When permission is granted from the church to use a photo and logo, in what format does Wikipedia Commons need, and where does the approval need to be submitted?

Thank you for your help. 22:20, 25 September 2020 (UTC)SCBC2940

@SCBC2940: Hi, and welcome. The reviewer who accepts your submitted article will move your sandbox to articlespace, making the cats live. Affiliation status in the infobox at that time will transfer over intact. Please note that en:Template:Infobox church does not support fields like "State Affiliation", "Local Affiliation", and "National Affiliation" (yet), so please include such information in prose. Also, please note that you shouldn't have to use that template multiple times on a page. In addition, please review en:WP:MFA and en:WP:COI. Finally, please have authorized church officials see OTRS re photos. In your signature, please link your username to your userpage or user talk page, and separate it from and precede the date and time per COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:30, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

Wanted to replace image without losing the old one, but it didn't work as planned.

The file Alaska boroughs and census areas.svg was out of date, so I created a new version. Rather than just overwrite the old one, I renamed it to File:Alaska boroughs and census areas 2013-19.svg. Then when I tried to upload the new version, I intended to give it the same name as the old one so that all the articles would automatically have the updated map. However, it seems that I cannot do that, and the file now sits at File:Alaska boroughs and census areas.svg.svg. --Lasunncty (talk) 10:41, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

Last time I acceded to a request like this I was practically torn a new hole in my body. Apparently, if I delete the redirect, it is likely that all sister-project references to that redirect will begin to be deleted. @Lasunncty: May I suggest:
It is actually a cleaner solution. If/when we have to upload an update again, we just change that upload and change the redirect again. File:Alaska boroughs and census areas.svg stays cleanly a redirect to whatever is current and can be expected to change over time; the others each have a date attached and can be accessed when someone wants a specific dated version. - Jmabel ! talk 23:53, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the suggestion. I will attempt this solution. --Lasunncty (talk) 07:23, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Australian Commons License on image upload

I am using the Upload wizard and would prefer to use an Australian Commons License - can this be edited after upload or is there some other way of accessing it

@PerthDeco: Hi, and welcome. We only have one recommended Australia-specific Creative Commons license template, {{Cc-by-3.0-au}}. Templates {{Cc-by-4.0}} and {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} are international and the associated deeds take Australian law into account. That applies to each of the photos you uploaded. Where did you get them? Can you get permission from the photographers or their heirs? Category:Historical images of XXX in Taiwan

In the past two years, I have found that such people (especially users from Taiwan) to misuse "Category:Historical images of temples in Taiwan" as the category page for temples. For example, add a category tag to an already existing temple category page: special:diff/439494050. Also, the same problem also exists in the category "Historical images of shinto shrines in Taiwan" (see: special:diff/439056338). I know that different people may misuse the category "Historical images of XXX in Taiwan" for different reasons, but I hope anyone can help me how to solve this problem. In addition, they seems to be some serious misunderstandings about the use of word "image" in the title.--Kai3952 (talk) 18:26, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

The picture was taken at a public event (demonstration) for which panorama freedom applies in Austria. And Eva Zar staged herself there, she stood on the stage and gave a speech, as you can see from the microphone (she was the spokesperson for "Train of Hope" and was also in the official program of the demo: [17]). It is not the first time that she has tried to have the picture deleted, as you can see in her posts, and it has already been explained to her in detail that the inclusion does not violate any rights. Why I am blocked from updating a picture

The picture is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alexander_Memorial_Baptist_Church_-_Parish_Hall.JPG

Since this is showing a 19th century residence, and almost no one is interested in the church's 21st century parish hall (there is no article on the church), I want to replace it with a cleaned up version of this image: https://archive.org/details/anastronomerswi00hallgoog/page/n110/mode/2up

which shows the house as it was in the later 19th century, when the couple lived there. It also has the lady of the house (w:Angeline Stickney) on the steps and two black servants at work. Yet I am blocked from replacing it. I don't want to start a new image and have to replace it manually everywhere the old image is used. Thank you. Deisenbe (talk) 09:51, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

@Deisenbe: You haven't really given enough details of the problem for me to work out what went wrong, but happily that doesn't really matter. If you want to change which picture is used on, for instance en:Asaph Hall, you should do that by uploading the picture you want to use with a new name and then editing the page on Wikipedia. Commons tries to avoid imposing its editorial will on other projects, and part of that is our policy on overwriting files. That policy says that files should only be overwritten if the new version is a minor, uncontroversial improvement on the old one. Overwriting File:Alexander Memorial Baptist Church - Parish Hall.JPG with a 19th-century picture would be neither. There are only ten uses of the file, so even replacing all of them should take less time than it's taken me to write this. --bjh21 (talk) 11:04, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

Please can I use an image which has been uploaded on facebook profile if I am given the license? What is the license of an image which has already been used on the internet? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abubakar Balarabe (talk • contribs) 18:58, 29 September 2020‎ (UTC)

@Abubakar Balarabe: Hi, and welcome. Exactly which image, from where, and which license, from whom?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:41, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I would like to upload a photograph Cinema Coliseum Khartoum from 1935. It was taken by a photographer called Karakashian and is currently in the archives of the Durham University Library, Archives and Special Collections[18] I found it on Pinterest, and the caption says it was published in 1935 in a British colonial newspaper in Sudan. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/418060777880286124/ As I am not sure, if this picture is in the public domain, I would appreciate any answer on this. Thanks, --Munfarid1 (talk) 22:05, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

How do I establish a GNU Free Documentation License for photos I wish to use in an educational textbook.

Dear Wikipedia Commons, I would like to know the process to establish a GNU Free Documentation license for photos that I have selected for an educational textbook that I have been working on for a long time. Best regards, Dale Pelton dalepelton@sbcglobal.net — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dalepelton (talk • contribs) 00:16, 30 September 2020‎ (UTC)

@Dalepelton: Hi, and welcome. Please follow exactly the terms of the specific GFDL licenses for each photo. Which photos are they, or which specific GFDL licenses?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:33, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Hallo,

For the presentation of the data the page http://www.openrailwaymap.org was used, where it says that it has to be used under 'cc-by-sa-2.0' with a link to the internet address. Image uploaded does not appear

Hi there. I uploaded today an image (a photograph taken a few days ago) "Kirche Maisprach, jpg" to Wikimedia Commons, using the Wizard. Image size = 2’651’919 Bytes, 3754 x 2814 px. I do not see this image anywhere now, not knowing whether the upload worked. Did I miss something in the upload process? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mac-christian (talk • contribs) 14:56, 24 September 2020‎ (UTC)

How to edit.

How I can edit someone's article if I get his/her news link ??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Souravisonline (talk • contribs) 09:42, 29 September 2020‎ (UTC)

  • @Souravisonline: It is hard to tell what you are asking here. This is Wikimedia Commons; we don't have articles, so you might be on the wrong site. Also I have no idea what you mean by "if I get his/her news link". If you could be a lot more specific about what you are trying to do (what article are you trying to edit (please link it)? What change exactly are you trying to make to it?) there is a lot better chance someone can answer you. - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello , Jmabel my question is, if someone has wikipedia article thn how I add them on here ?? I need tutorial. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Souravisonline (talk • contribs) 06:45, 4 October 2020‎ (UTC)

@Souravisonline: I still don't understand. How can you "create" an article that already exists? - Jmabel ! talk 15:37, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

A screenshot of my company's software

Hey! I am working to create a page on my company's software. You may see my COI declaration on my user page. A draft of the page may be found in my sandbox. I have been given permission from my company to upload a screenshot from the software, but I am not sure how to get it in. I have been told that it is OK to license the image. It may also be possible to use a fair use rational, as the image will serve a teaching purpose. Sam at Megaputer (talk) 13:19, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

  • @Sam at Megaputer: Either your company can post the page somewhere on its own website and indicate the license there (easiest, if possible; it doesn't have to be a page that is navigable from anywhere else, and you can use "norobots" so Google etc. won't index it) or you can go through the process described at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 16:20, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Thanks for the help! I followed your advice and got an image up. If it's not too much trouble, I just have one more question. I want to upload a second image to represent the software in the infobox, but the company would rather not license it. We might also use this similar image, but it is non-preferred because it is less detailed. I'm not sure if the company would let the second image be used under a license, but the answer is probably yes. I'm a bit fuzzy on fair use policy. Do we have any hope of getting the preferred image into the infobox without giving up the copyright? And if not, what about the non-preferred image? Thanks again for all your help. Sam at Megaputer (talk) 18:49, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
@Sam at Megaputer: Hi, and welcome. If you want to upload high resolution logos here on Wikimedia Commons, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept logos of others, and have the logo designer(s) or authorized company representatives post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the image and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Low resolution logos on English Wikipedia are uploaded there for Fair Use subject to en:WP:F. We do not accept Fair Use files here on Wikimedia Commons. en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard gives four options for uploading directly on that project: Click here to start the Upload Wizard on top in the middle; Files for upload process; Plain form for local uploads; and Old guided form (the latter three in the right column under "Wikipedia").   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:24, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
@Sam at Megaputer: What you did at File:Convolutional-neural-network-polyanalyst-flowchart-example.png is OK, though it could certainly use more categories, and this sort of image is better presented as an SVG.
Your company should consider that licensing the copyright of an image they can still enforce trademark (we have a tag for that, {{Trademark}}. Frankly, the logo is not original enough that I could actually imagine a copyright claim holding up in court, though a trademark claim presumably would. - Jmabel ! talk 16:38, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback! I have a friend who knows some things about trademark law (she took a class on it). I'll get some more info on that from her. I'll also to go back and improve my last upload. I can tell there's lots to learn here. Sam at Megaputer (talk) 16:47, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
I added some more categories, but I couldn't convert the image to SVG. All of the online converters I tried made it render as nothing but black blobs. Sam at Megaputer (talk) 22:00, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
@Sam at Megaputer: I suggest you ask for conversion at Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:09, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
