Some holiday joy[edit]

Since 1959, it is a Swedish tradition to (at 3 pm) watch Donald Duck and other Disney cartoons on TV. The most appreciated part is about Donald as bird photographer in Clown of the Jungle. I think most users at FPC can relate to the frustrated Donald (especially the parrot scene), which is why I'm sharing it with you. File:German States Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1679 6 Thaler D-LS214.jpg[edit]

Hi Godot13, rather than placing a regular move request, I am addressing you directly as a Commons file mover, numismatist and author of this high-quality photograph of a truly spectacular Löser commemorating the death of John Frederick, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and which I came across while gathering and categorizing coin images related to Brunswick-Lüneburg/Calenberg/Hannover, my own numismatic field of interest. In fact, John Frederick did rule the Principality of Calenberg, but was unrelated to the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, so pls note a few changes already made to the file description and categories here. However, I would also ask you to change the misleading "Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel" name part, either to the more general "Brunswick-Lüneburg" or perhaps "Brunswick-Calenberg-Hannover". Thanks, HReuter (talk) 19:14, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

HReuter- Thanks for the additional information. I will be in Washington D.C. next week at the Smithsonian and would like to confer with them as the name of the file is based on their records and world coins are not my area of expertise. I am however committed to accuracy. If you have any references/citations for this I would like to present it to them so that they can consider making the change in their records. Please give me a week (up to two weeks maximum) to make the name change. I do appreciate you reaching out to me on this. Many thanks, --Godot13 (talk) 06:17, 12 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I had a suspicion the filename might have come from the Smithsonian! Indeed the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg as a whole is notorious for its puzzling subdivisions and reunifications over time, in conjunction with the emerging and terminating lines of the ruling House of Welf. Anyway, regarding the deceased duke in question here, the WP article John Frederick, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg correctly states he "ruled over the Principality of Calenberg, a subdivision of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, from 1665 until his death" (1679), where Calenberg (=core of the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg as from 1692) is distinct from Brunswick-Wolffenbüttel, as shown by the diagram linked above. As an independent source, I'll email you a link to the relevant page scanned from Welter Die Münzen der Welfen …, the authoritative 1971 work on that numismatic area. – Hope that helps; envying you for your access to such precious coins :-), best, HReuter (talk) 16:46, 15 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Godot13: I notice the finename is still unchanged/misleading -- would you mind if I just place a move request now? Thanks, HReuter (talk) 00:22, 16 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi HReuter- If you tell me exactly how you would like it to read, I will be happy to make the change. --Godot13 (talk) 04:05, 16 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Godot13: To keep the renaming minimal and in line with other non-US coins in c:Category:NNC_coins_uploaded_by_User:Godot13, I would suggest File:German States Brunswick-Lüneburg 1679 6 Thaler D-LS214.jpg or, if you prefer to avoid the umlaut, File:German States Brunswick-Luneburg 1679 6 Thaler D-LS214.jpg.
Btw I have extended this very file description in line with other (privately-owned) coins photographed at our local WP community c:Category:Fotosession im Lokal K (Münzen und Medaillen), in particular c:Category:Funeral_coins and c:Category:Palmbaumtaler – fascinating to see how the palm tree theme of earlier John Frederick coins is taken up here in its ultimate form, i.e. Death destroying the palm tree of Life, year number by year number.
In this context, may I ask you to review/correct/improve my non-native English of this particular file description (e.g. Latin "certum" --> English "certain/sure/safe"?, twice) and of two brief articles the translation of which was triggered by this occasion, viz. en:Palmbaumtaler and en:Funeral coin (term "coin-lord" probably wrong) – Thanks! HReuter (talk) 21:01, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
HReuter- The file has been moved to File:German States Brunswick-Lüneburg 1679 6 Thaler D-LS214.jpg. I will look over the English tomorrow. Thanks again for your research and for pointing this out!--Godot13 (talk) 23:51, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Use of your image of the State Hermitage Museum[edit]

I am Dr. Lew Deitch, a professor of geography who publishes books on Amazon. I have just completed a color version of my book "Visiting Saint Petersburg by Sea, Land or Air." All of my hundreds of images are not of sufficient pixel strength to use for a double front and back cover. I found your image of the Hermitage, which in many ways mirrors many of my own. And being at over 8 megabytes, it was perfect. I have of course given you attribution credit on the back cover, as prescribed by Wikimedia.org. I trust you will be pleased with the exposure.

You may contact me at tomcat consulting@earthlink.net if you wish to learn more about my publications, or comment on my use of your image.

Aerial photos[edit]

Hi Godot, last year you uploaded a lot of aerial photographs of Scotland to the UK part of Wiki Loves Monuments. Looking ahead to this year's competition, I though it might be interesting to highlight these as aerial photos have been quite rare in the past. Would you be interested in preparing a post for the WLM-UK blog about what prompted those pictures (with a few of your favourites illustrating it)? Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States – Back for 2017![edit]

This user participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016.

Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2017}} to your userpage!

Hi there! My name is Kevin, one of the organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Last year, you contributed to our 2016 event. It was a great success thanks to you and many others, with over 1,700 people contributing over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States. Over 1,000 of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, making our open knowledge about United States history and heritage all the better.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information, including updated tips, lists, and prizes. Like last year, you'll be able to upload your new photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 08:05, 1 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Louis d'or[edit]

Hi, I'd like to nominate for FP one or several of your pictures of louis d'or. I calculated here the weight in gold according to several sources I found on the Internet (see en:Talk:Louis d'or#Weight, I think there was an error there). I hope it is OK. I am a bit confused by the different kind of louis (half, double, etc.). Aren't any visual differences between them (except the weight)? Regards, Yann (talk) 11:46, 3 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Hi Yann- I'm traveling but will be back home in 2-3 days. I'll respond further when I get back. Thanks. --Godot13 (talk) 00:12, 9 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Yann-Congrats! Looking at some of the reference books on gold coins, the weights do seem to vary sometimes by year for any given denomination of Louis d'or. As far as discerning the denomination, you may be correct, as all the denominations at some point shared both the obverse and reverse designs. It may come down to visual inspection and understanding the rough size. I will look into this more... --Godot13 (talk) 22:41, 13 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Permission to use photo[edit]

Hi,

I am a professor of Biology at Glendale Community College. I am revising a set of outlines for the marine biology class that I teach at this college and would like to use your photo of a Chinstrap Penguin, which appears at the following URL: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Shetland-2016-Deception_Island–Chinstrap_penguin_(Pygoscelis_antarctica)_04.jpg

This is a “zero cost textbook” course and the outlines are uploaded into a Canvas page that is only available to the students at no cost. For those students that cannot afford a laptop, our bookstore sells them a black and white printed copy for $7-8. A majority of our students cannot afford expensive textbooks, so I am trying to create the best possible alternative for them.

Thanks in advance.

Concerning the renamings made by Huldra (palestine instead of Israel), could this be remembered :

    • What could be remembered is that before changing multiple user categories, 50+ image file names, breaking links in FP images, perhaps approaching the original uploader to discuss a moderate solution might have made some sense... Godot13 (talk) 15:57, 28 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Wiki Loves Monuments 2019[edit]

Hallo Godot13,

September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again![edit]

Hi

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.

Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:34, 3 September 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:43, 15 August 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Reminder: User Group Meeting this Saturday[edit]

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

This is a quick reminder that our second virtual meeting will take place this Saturday, September 26. The agenda entails presentations about drone photography, about the story behind a featured picture, and about the future of LRMediaWiki. We'll also discuss photographers’ contacts with the Wikimedia Foundation and the election of representatives for our user group. You'll find information about all of this on the event page:

I'm also inviting you to share some information about yourself and your photography work with other members of the user group on our new membership list:

I hope you're well during these difficult times. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 15:44, 23 September 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Commons Photographers User Group meeting on Saturday[edit]

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

I'd like to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, December 12. We'll have two presentations: Habib Mhenni aka Dyolf77 will answer the question Do "we" need DSLRs anymore? and Martin Falbisoner will walk us through the making of his featured picture File:Caribbean_Sea_-_Long_Exposure.jpg.

If you can make it, please add your name to the list of attendees to this page:

I hope to see you in three days. Also, I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best for 2021. Your contributions to Commons make a big difference.

Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 14:05, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Full size $100,000 bill file[edit]

Hi. I was wondering if you could make available the full sized image file of the $100,000 bill. The Metadata section at the bottom of the page shows its original size is 6560x5937 at 800dpi. Yet, the only available size is 500x445. Most of your other old currency image uploads are available in at least 4500x4000. It's unfortunate that this one is not.

  • This was based on an agreement with the NNC/NMAH at the Smithsonian. This bill was not to be reproduced at any substantial resolution. - Godot13 (talk) 19:35, 3 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:34, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow[edit]

Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. I'm getting ready to publish a book and the Kennedy Half Dollar image you took is perfect for the cover. I've never used wiki commons before and I want to make sure I give the proper credit for its use. When I publish, should I credit the image like this?

Title: 1976-S 50C Clad Deep Cameo (1171-4192) Attribution: Image courtesy of Heritage Auctions Photographer: Andrew Shiva Source: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1976-S_50C_Clad_Deep_Cameo.jpg License: CC-BY-4.0

I noticed it also says to provide a link to the license. Is there a specific one or do I just use this link?

https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Thanks for your help and awesome photography skills :)

  • Hi Seth- The attribution for Heritage Auctions is correct. I did not personally photograph the coin so photographer (I facilitated its release/use for Wikipedia) should be left blank. Godot13 (talk) 10:09, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Kennedy Half Dollar Attribution[edit]

Hey Andrew,

Sorry, wasn't sure how to continue the previous feed. Anyways, just wanted to thank you for getting back with me, I really appreciate it. Now I'm extra excited because now the cover for the book is going to look great! The book is called CENTS and it'll be on Amazon on June 19th (2021), if you want to see how the cover turned out.

Thanks again :)
