First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Josef Fottner[edit]

Hello Richard Huber!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 23:09, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The KMPlayer[edit]

Hello. You have uploaded some screenshots of The KMPlayer, and tagged them as free screenshots of GPLed software. But The KMPlayer, unlike the KDE front-end for MPlayer and Xine, apparently is not under a GPL-compatible license, it is a proprietary freeware without source code available to the users. Thus the screenshots are most likely non-free and have to be deleted. --AVRS (talk) 21:23, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Volkov Commander is also not free software, not under the GNU GPL, and thus {{Free screenshot}} is not applicable. The UI is generic, though, so I think the license of the program does not make the screenshot non-free. Please add GPL separately, if you wish to license the screenshot itself under it. --AVRS (talk) 15:13, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to make this screenshot for Wikipedia available? What do you mean by "add GPL separateley"? --Richard Huber (talk) 13:51, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for a late answer. I meant "without {{Free screenshot}}". It would be better if it was PNG, too (the gradients sure weren't there in the original window?). --AVRS (talk) 08:25, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hammerzeh-cat[edit]

Richard Huber (talk) 18:18, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:MPC-HC 1.7.xx 64bit.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

about: File:MPC-HC 1.7.xx 64bit.jpg[edit]

--Blurred Lines 16:01, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Allerheiligenkirche (Neualbenreuth)[edit]

Viele Grüße --Allexkoch (talk) 19:28, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Versch. Fröblsterne.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Hello!. You should always try to categorize your uploaded media in a more accurate category. In this case Category:Ruxolitinib. Before upload a media, you should browse by categories to determine the most convenient one/s (or create a new category). Thanks. Jmarchn (talk) 20:44, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What is the exact location of the Georg Elser Infotafal shown in your photo?[edit]

I would like to add a link to your photo of the Georg Elser Infotafal to en:Gasteig#History_of_the_site, but it is not competely clear where it is displayed. From the background, it appears to be in the window of a restaurant. Could you add the name of the restaurant and the building that contains the restaurant to the description? -- 50.39.100.227 02:40, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Here are the exact cordinates: 48.13098019703619, 11.592010134351264
Richard Huber (talk) 15:41, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. There is a template to add a location to a photo description. Here is an example.
You appear to have added a note to the photo of the Georg Elser Infotafal saying that "im Jahr 2023 weiße Schrift auf schwarzem Grund". Has the Infotafel you photographed in 2008 been removed or replaced?

Your "Feld-Postkarte (1916) Vallée de l'Yser" is actually a view of the Lys in Wervicq !!![edit]

Dear Richard,

I noticed that the legend of the postcard you stored @ https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Feld-Postkarte_(1916)_Valle_de_l%27Yser.jpg is actually incorrect. This is not a view of the Yser valley but well a view of the bridge on the Lys at Wervik/Wervicq, on the border between France and Belgium (see postcard stored @ https://www.geneanet.org/cartes-postales/view/137055#0). This results probably from an error of the German Feld-Post... I suggest that you delete this picture from Commons as it is totally confusing (legend is not consistent with actual view) and that the page Yser in German (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yser) is updated accordingly.

Kind regards,
