First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)

ich hab keinen Plan ob das einer lesen kann oder net weil das hier einfach alles viel zu verwirrend ist. Ich wollte nur ein paar Bandbilder von meinen Kumpels hochladen und jetzt bin ich gesperrt. Kein Mensch hat irgendwelche Lizenzen an den Bildern. Ich blick hier einfach net mehr durch. Hab auch schon einem Admin ne Email geschrieben aber hier zuckt sich keiner...keinen Plan mehr

I have uploaded some pictures on commons.wikimedia, my User name is Muellhelm. These pictures all were deleted; I have the authority the use this pictures for an article of their Band. The article is on wikipedia – The crimson Ghosts. What settings have to do to use these pictures or is it possible from your side to release these pictures again. Please read Commons:First steps and Commons:Licensing, both of which are available in German as Commons:Erste Schritte and Commons:Lizenzen, respectively.

Commons can only accept images that are either in the public domain or that are published under a licence that allows anyone to use them (not just Wikipedia) for any purpose (not just for an article about the band), commercial or noncommercial, in modified or unmodified form. Such a licence can only be granted by the copyright holder (for photographs, this usually means the photographer).

To verify that an image is free, you need to complete the {{Information}} template with all the requiremed legal information: a verifiable source (where you got the image from, such as "own work" if you created the photograph yourself, a URL for a website, or an ISBN for a book), a licence, and if you're uploading someone else's picture, you also need to provide evidence that they approved publication under that licence.

This evidence can be a link to another website where the images appear with this licence, or an e-mail forwarded to Commons. See Commons:Email templates for how to request permission and Commons:OTRS for how to archive it.

Most of the images you uploaded were {{Watermark}}ed as being created by Bita Saadati, Sabrina Walz, and Dirk Behlau. Hence, you would have to provide evidence that they authorised publication of these works under a free licence. Some of the images you uploaded were watermarked "All rights reserved", which would contradict free licensing terms. We cannot accept images unless the rights to control redistribution and modification are waived.
