Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Sodomka

Všiml jsem si, že jsi obrázky File:MHV Mercedes-Sodomka 170 01.jpg, File:MHV Mercedes-Sodomka 170 02.jpg vyřadil z Category:Karoserie Sodomka a do popisu editace jsi napsal "this isn't sodomka's body!!" Nemám znalosti k tomu, abych rozsuzoval odborné spory, nicméně prozatím nemám důvod se domnívat, že autor fotky si tento údaj vymyslel. Rozhodně je nepřijatelné, abys pouze umázl kategorii a přitom nechal tento údaj v popisu i názvu fotky (ostatně také by nebylo dobré, abys údaj jen tak bez diskuse či zdroje mazal z popisu fotky). A pokud jsi s autorem fotky ve sporu, tak bych i čekal, že jako "oponent" své tvrzení doložíš i něčím jiným než jen dvěma vykřičníky. Zatím, jak vidím, diskusní stránky obou obrázků jsou prázdné a na diskusní stránce uploadera také nevidím nic k věci. Prozatím kategorii vracím, než se věc vysvětlí. --ŠJů (talk) 11:35, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Doložit to můžu například mailem od ředitele vysokomýtského muzea, který pořádá každoročně festival Sodomkovo Vysoké Mýto. Podle něj Sodomka karosoval pouze jeden Mercedes, a jak můžeš vidět, vypadal úplně jinak. Omlouvám se za způsob řešení, ale nevím jak zde na commons zpochybnit popis.--Slfi (talk) 11:44, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Asi by bylo dobré přinejmenším se pokusit zjistit od autora popisku, kde na ty údaje přišel. Přepokládám, že to opsal z nějakého popisku na té automobilové výstavě ve Fürstenfeldu, kde byl snímek pořízen. Druhou možností je, že jde o nějaký omyl (omylem zkopírovaný popisek odjinud atd.). Jde-li o první možnost, tak informace od vlastníka, který dává historické vozidlo na výstavu, by měla mít podobnou váhu jako informace od ředitele vysokomýtského muzea. --ŠJů (talk) 12:02, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Tatra 613 Vignale

True, true. But nonetheless I think it would be less confusing to list them simply as "Tatra 613 prototypes", since all 613s are already listed under Vignale? Also, I feel that this category title implies that Vignale had nothing to do with the "regular" 613. But it is not very important. Mr.choppers (talk) 06:30, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

"Tatra 613 prototypes" is possible too. But on the other hand, the inclusion of "Tatra 613" in category Vignale gives the feeling that all Tatra 613 were built in Italy on Tatra 613 chassis. Maybe it could be "Category:Vignale designs"?--Slfi (talk) 11:23, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

I agree and think it should be "Category:Vignale designs" or, as seems to be the standard, Category:Vehicles by Vignale. See here. Also, listing Vignale as a manufacturer rather than a designer seems to me to be incorrect. I guess we should fix these things first! Mr.choppers (talk) 17:59, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

I don't know Vignale's work, but I think it should be the same as Pininfarina: "Vignale vehicles" and "Vehicles designed by Vignale". I think that Vignale was also manufacturer.--Slfi (talk) 19:14, 17 April 2011 (UTC)

Rotate

I hope you don't mind - I removed {{Rotate}} from your gallery. I have tagged the individual files for rotation by a bot. The template works with the bot, if you add 90, 180 or 270 (degrees clockwise) but does not work for a gallery or category. Otherwise, it places the item in Category:Images requiring rotation. Ahoj, vzpomínám, ale nenašel jsem kategorii Zvonařka. Je to focené na tom starém autobusáku (nebo to aspoň vypadá jako staré nádraží) jak tam do nedávna parkovaly busy. Díky za zařazení do správné kategorie.--Honza chodec (talk) 16:52, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

Zdravím, chtěl bych se zeptat, jak to udělat, aby mé obrázky zde nebyly kopírovány. Myslím, abych mé fotografie směl používat jen já a nikdo jiný (copyright), nebo jak se tomu říká :) děkuji za odpověď Edisteewr (talk) 18:51, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Zdravím. To, co popisujete, na Commons NELZE, protože by to šlo proti smyslu projektu. K ukládání soukromých a jinak licencovaných fotografií použijte běžné internetové fotogalerie - Flickr, Picasa, české Rajče nebo i Facebook a další, tyto fotografie ale nepůjde použít na wikipedii. Mimochodem, koukal jsem na kategorie vašich fotografií - kategorie na Commons jsou v angličtině, nepoužívejte proto prosím české názvy kategorií. Děkuji, Honza chodec (talk) 19:26, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Anglická Wikipedie má pro některé obrázky výjimku, tyto obrázky se ale můžou použít pouze na anglické wikipedii a nikde jinde (nesmí se objevit mimo wikipedii). Česká wikipedie tuto výjimku nemá a hlavně ani nemá své vlastní uložiště obrázků, všechny obrázky se ukládají na Commons. Honza chodec (talk) 10:29, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Kategorizace bez popisu

Zdravím. Pokud kategorizuješ obrázky podle nějakých málo zjevných znaků, tak se prosím pokus aspoň do popisu připsat nějakou poznámku, proč obrázek do dané kategorie podle tebe patří. Jinak, pokud kategorizuješ a přitom nedoplníš nic do popisu, si kolegové mohou myslet, že ses třeba jen omylem uklikl. V případě frýdlantského gymnázia BMA jsem nakonec nalezl alespoň rozmazaný státní znak na vchodu budovy, ale na této fotce stále žádný záchytný bod nenacházím. Žádný popis, název obrázku naprosto bezobsažný, na jednom okně nápis Herzlich willkomen, opravdu netuším proč jsi to zakategorizoval do České republiky... --ŠJů (talk) 11:26, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Ahoj, to bylo v době, kdy jsem ve velkém likvidoval nekategorizované obrázky. Vždycky jsem na té fotce něco našel, ale pro rychlost jsem používal Commonscat, takže nebylo kam napsat poznámku. Máš pravdu, že teď už se to bude blbě dohledávat. Už nevím, podle čeho jsem to poznal, ale když se na tu fotku podívám teď, pořád mám pocit, že je to focené v Česku. Vypadá to na nějakou školu ale mate nápis Willkommen herzlich, takže buď Německo, nebo se tam němčina učí. Teď už těžko říct. Dík za odpověď. Nojo, no člověk nesmí bejt ukvapenej. Já se při kategorizaci podle zemí většinou prvotně orientuju podle toho, že název fotky je česky, a příhlížím i k tomu, odkud pochází autor fotky, ale nikdy se nelze spolehnout jen na to - stejně se člověk musí nad každou fotkou zamyslet. A pocity mohou být velmi ošidné. Nápis "Herzlich willkommen" může být klidně třeba v učebně němčiny někde v Maďarsku, podle toho se orientovat moc nedá. --ŠJů (talk) 11:56, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so.
