"PD-self, which conflicts with PD-shape"

Theoretically they might conflict, but a lot people hedge their bets ("probably this could be covered by PD-shape, but if not, I declare it PD-self just in case")... AnonMoos (talk) 18:35, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Quibik, thank you a lot for fixing the code in both of the images. You made the code valid and at the same time, significantly reduced file size. I am by no means familiar with editing svg files using text editor (notebook), but I'd like to learn the way you did it. Could you possible explain how you did that, or suggest something for me to read instead? E.g. what to look for, what is redundant and what can be safely removed from the source code. Thanks again. --Ahnode (talk) 21:15, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I'll gladly help you, but unfortunately I'm a bit busy at the moment. So, if you don't mind, I will write up a mini-HOWTO or something like that for you in the weekend. Before that, you could fill me in with some details about your existing knowledge on the topic. For example – how familiar are you with the the SVG format, XML syntax or CSS? —Quibik (talk) 19:32, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh absolutely, take your time, it will be great to learn. I started drawing about a year and a half ago, but it wasn't until recently that I have actually looked inside a code, due to some Cyrillic alphabet rendering problems. So I have a very basic understanding of it. Now that I know what else can be done, I will read more about them. --Ahnode (talk) 20:53, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you fix the arrowheads that got twisted when you cropped this image? Thanks. HowardMorland (talk) 14:04, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for bringing this to my attention! I fixed the problem (and adjusted the text layout a bit). Quibik (talk) 17:11, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Source code

How do you cleanup source code? What should I look for? I believe you edit the SVG manually? --Shandris (talk) 12:44, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the images uploaded recently by Jovianeye, for example, I first opened the image in Illustrator, removed any unnecessary nodes from the paths and modified the curves that should have really been straight lines to be such (manually and with the aid of the "Simplify path" tool's "straight lines" option in Illustrator). I also modifyed any circles made up of more complex shapes to really be just circles. In the flags that had a rectangular background, but had holes in the rectangles where other objects were on top, I removed the holes as they are not necessary. It is also sometimes a good idea to combine paths togeteher (ctrl+8 in Illustrator) or unite them. I also usually optimize the object structure a bit, where necessary. Next comes the manual editing: the Illustrator generally outputs very good code already (compared to Inkscape, for example), but can always be cleaned up a little more. For example, most files don't need the majority of the information that is included in the <svg> tag.
I hope this rambling gave you some ideas for cleanup, but the procedure is always quite specific, so it's hard to give you any more general tips, besides this: as a rule of thumb, you can throw away any information that does not affect the result, but still leaves the source code valid. It's also a good idea to re-save the files having a lot of Inkscape junk embedded in them in Inkscape as "Plain SVG" before any further editing. Hope this helps; you are welcome to ask any further questions you might have. —Quibik (talk) 13:18, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ty for the reply. I too opened his files in illustrator and removed unnecessary groups and made circles with holes into true circles. Thanks again. Just wondered how you converted the Wimpel file http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Werwolfwimpel.svg from 5KB into teeny tiny 483Bytes? --Shandris (talk) 14:11, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That file indeed had a lot of room for improvement: the outer border of the black part was made up of 38 nodes which were connected by curvy lines (it's a triangle!!). The rest was just minor tweaking. —Quibik (talk) 17:17, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay this is weird. I removed some redundant extra nodes from the big letters but the file increased 1 KB. I also remove the whole <svg > tag but Wikipedia gave me error so I had to put it back. Try compress it yourself and tell me how you're doing it =P I'm good at creating SVGs but have no idea how ppl for example compressed the complex flag of India to just 800 bytes. --Shandris (talk) 18:28, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think I'll give the File:GMC logo.svg a try once the editing has calmed down. I doubt there's much to optimize, though. The flag of India uses a clever trick to reduce the size: in the wheel part of the image, the "rod" and a "dot" are defined once and then duplicated 5 times to have 24 of them. —Quibik (talk) 19:30, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In bare minimum of Werwolf, what exactly did you change? And if I duplicate an element in Illustrator a 100 times, will the size be still same? Or how is it done? --Shandris (talk) 20:09, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Aside from some minor coordinate twiddling I removed some unnecessary elements from the header:
<svg enable-background="new 0 0.72 729 472.58" height="472.58px" version="1.1" viewBox="0 0.72 729 472.58"
width="729px" x="0px" xml:space="preserve" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" y="0px">
to
<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="729px" height="473.5px">
Any duplicate objects you create in Illustrator will be fully duplicated (in other words, not linked to a single definition) in the resulting SVG, so the size will increase. In Inkscape for example exists a "clone" tool which duplicates objects by linking to a single definition. I didn't manage to find a good tutorial on it, but perhaps this gives you an idea of how linking works (its basically done with id="..." and <use ...> tags).
So the new India flag was done in Inkscape? Cool, i hate Inkscape :) --Shandris (talk) 21:39, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, the flag image is most definitely manually coded (except perhaps the path). Quibik (talk) 22:16, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Estonian images

I been just trying to send them to the Commons if they are really public domain, even if they are not used. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:13, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I have absolutely no objections to your actions. In fact, I'm glad that someone finally did something with the mess that PD-EE-exempt is. The majority of the images you migrated were actually not orphans – I replaced their usage with a superior version that already existed on Commons. Another issue, that you might want to look into are the Category:Military rank insignia of Estonia, that is for the most part duplicated at en:Category:PD-EE-exempt. The enwiki ones are in the PNG format with ridiculous and unnecessary transparency added, but at the same time have descriptive names that the Commons ones lack. I'd be happy if you did something with that – it should be easier to accomplish with admin powers –, but of course you're not obliged to. Thanks, Quibik (talk) 14:06, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Info lost

Hi Quibik, you've uploaded a new version of „File:EU27-2008 European Union map.svg“ (optimized the source code). The new version has lost the country names. For example: "al" (= Albania) is now "path 42". --Kolja21 (talk) 01:25, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for drawing my attention to this! It should be fixed now. —Quibik (talk) 23:15, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great, but - sorry - found an other error: The color of the lakes has changed. Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega (north of St. Petersburg) are looking like countries. --Kolja21 (talk) 18:41, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for all the unnecessary headaches; I fixed the new problem. I have to say, though, that I don't really understand what caused the problem and why my solution fixes it, either. The fix involved changing the line:
<path id="lakes" opacity="0.4" fill="#FFF" ...
to
<path id="lakes" style="opacity:0.4; fill:#ffffff" ...
They should be absolutely equivalent to one another... —Quibik (talk) 20:49, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Now it works. Thanks --Kolja21 (talk) 10:47, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notman

Thanks for your kind note. I was actually trying not to trouble you, although I perhaps ought to have left you a note with a heads up. While I think it's great that PD-old-100 is added to these images, there are many benefits to keeping PD-Canada (even though it is, admittedly, a bit of belt and suspenders). A user in Canada (given the content of the Notman collection, there is a good likelihood that most users would be Canadian) would have no way of knowing from PD-old-100 if the image in question is in the public domain in the source country or not (unless they were familiar with copyright law in Canada and understand that the tag covers Canada). Moreover, PD-Canada (and, by extension, any PD tags relating specifically to source countries) are tremendously helpful to novice editors who are familiarizing themselves with the copyright rules. No worries about extra work -- in the end, the tagging of these images is improved. Cheers! --Skeezix1000 (talk) 21:53, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for working on File:Washjeff shield old.png! It looks great! I'm wondering if you would be interested in turning it into a "vector" image? --GrapedApe (talk) 02:22, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I vectorized it. The new image is available as File:Washjeff shield old.svg. I hope you like it! —Quibik (talk) 12:33, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is AWESOME! It's being used in the portal template at Washington & Jefferson College (just go all the way to the bottom of that article to see it). Thank you so much!--GrapedApe (talk) 15:33, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mean to abuse your generosity, but I am wondering if you'd be able to tweak the black border, which appears to be thinner at the top right, compared to right side. If you would, I'd be forever grateful!--GrapedApe (talk) 03:40, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was not too certain about the shield's border either. The source image's border was quite uneven, so I thought I should leave it that way. But now that you also suggested changing it, I made the shield's shape perfectly symmetric (horizontally and vertically) and added an even border around it. Does it look better this way? —Quibik (talk) 13:09, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That looks awesome! Many thanks!--GrapedApe (talk) 15:02, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is really not much to choose from besides Inkscape when you want it to be open-source/free. My preferred application is en:Adobe Illustrator, but that is proprietary. Inkscape is still good, though, and I recommend you give it a try. —Quibik (talk) 22:13, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tere! Hoone ise on küll vana, aga arhitekt Aleksandr Dmitrijev suri alles aastal 1959. Selle pildi peaks ehk inglise vikisse laadima? Pikne 08:02, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Sul on õigus, Commonsisse see pilt tõesti kahjuks ei sobi. Inglise vikis oleks vajalik fair use rationale, kuid hetkel ei ole viitsimist seda välja nuputada. Artikkel, kus pilti kasutatakse, on ka ülilühike. Aga aitäh, et probleemile tähelepanu juhtisid! —Quibik (talk) 08:24, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SVG-ifying a new text logo?

Would you be interested in turning File:W&J Hockey text logo.png into SVG? Since you're pretty good at that kind of thing...--GrapedApe (talk) 06:42, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I created File:W&J Hockey text logo.svg. I'm not entirely happy with the lower letters, though, since I had to emulate the font rather than use a real one. Feel free to modify it in any way, if you want to. —Quibik (talk) 21:50, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Amazing! Thanks!--GrapedApe (talk) 22:24, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Quibik!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

General Staff of the Estonian Defence Forces

Hello, i was wondering if you could help me in the creation of the General Staff of the Estonian Defence Forces flag and/or coat of arms? (http://f.postimees.ee/f/2010/10/29/457228t41hc922.jpg) Karabinier (talk) 23:24, 29 october 2010 (UTC)

Sure, I'm willing to help. However, I don't think I can work it out from the images that are currently available. Maybe later. —Quibik (talk) 17:41, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Quibik, I saw you added the Estonian translation of "portrait of" and remarked in your edit commentary that it is grammatically incorrect. If the only thing that needs to be changed is the word order, it can be fixed easily (I can do it if you want).--Zolo (talk) 11:31, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah okay there are declension problems, that's not so easy to solve. If there is no simple rule, I guess the best we can do for now is to write something like: . This allows to keep more languages. Possibly we will be able to do better some day.--Zolo (talk) 10:52, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for offering your help. :) As you said, there will be issues with declension and the no simple rules exist, indeed. The only grammatically correct sentence structure that I can think of (that would not require modifying the subject noun) would be something like "Portree isikust X" ("Portrait of a person X"). Unfortunately, that sounds rather awkward and is not really the intended title of the work. Changing the word order would certainly be welcome, though. Please do so, if you can. About using the langSwitch: I don't think there's any escape from using it anyway – at least Estonian is written in the Latin script, for example. —Quibik (talk) 11:31, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed the template (not perfectly clean but I think we can do better in some time). We now have
 • Marie Reisik → Portrait of Marie Reisik
 • → Portrait of Marie Reisik, Estonian politician and. (For this one I don't know what the word order is supposed to be).--Zolo (talk) 12:54, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Everything works as intended now (the word order in the second example is correct). —Quibik (talk) 13:33, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for fixing Template:Institution after recent vandalism. That was a very quick reaction. --Jarekt (talk) 04:26, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ogre's symbols

Check colours for File:Flag of Ogre.svg from File:LVA Ogre flag.svg --Dark Eagle (talk) 09:23, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion. The choice of color in that version seems rather arbitrary as well, so I don't think I am going to use it though. As you might have noticed, the real flag shown in http://www.ogresnovads.lv/lat/par_ogres_novadu/simboli/ is actually a shade of purple... —Quibik (talk) 18:03, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
on this site isn't any flag of Ogre
on photo is Flag of Ogres novads, but this theme isn't clear now...--Dark Eagle (talk) 18:10, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification. Though, after working with Latvian COAs for some time now, it seems to me that the town COAs usually match the one their municipality uses (at least in Wikipedia). —Quibik (talk) 18:13, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

and please don't unload any CoAs and flags like File:LVA Tukums COA.svg this is not correct... ;) --Dark Eagle (talk) 18:14, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The naming conventions vary wildly on Commons, so I just picked the name so it would match the original uploader's way of naming. But from now on I'll name them the way you suggested for your convenience. No problem. —Quibik (talk) 18:19, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Continuing on the subject: would you please not remove the source links from the flags/COAs? Homogenizing descriptions is good, but keeping the relevant information is much more important. The images tend to vary somewhat from source to source, so its beneficial to know where they are from. You should probably keep the author information intact too if the image was moved here from another wiki. —Quibik (talk) 16:03, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Flag of Gulbene

Colours of flag should be that --Dark Eagle (talk) 19:51, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

by site augšā sudrabainā gaiši pelēkā tonī, apakšā - zili - pelēki - violetā tonī. - at the top of a light silver gray color, the bottom - blue - gray - purple... --Dark Eagle (talk) 19:56, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I saw that. I think the true color is probably something between these two – the dark gray fabric in the image has a slight purple/blue hue. I guess I'll try to adjust that. The top silvery part should probably still be rendered white as it usually is done, I think.
By the way, could you take a look at the Category:Flags of municipalities of Latvia? Most of these seem to be cities/towns rather than municipalities, but I'm not sure they can't be both either. I believe you should be more knowledgeable in this matter than me. —Quibik (talk) 20:58, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Bottom part is great, but upper should be a bit grey...
And I will check this category ;) But maybe you'd be interest in that? --Dark Eagle (talk) 19:10, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed the flag of Gulbene for you and did the vectorization as well. Cheers, Quibik (talk) 22:09, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Marju_Lauristin_2009-07-03.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

translating template:technique into Estonian

Quibik, we are currently template talk:technique a new version of template:technique. I have header that Estonian is a rather complex language. To make sure our template works for many languages, it would help to know how it should work in Estonian. So could you tell how "green oil on blue canvas mounted on black panel" should be translated, and tell us about declension and phrase structure in this case.--Zolo (talk) 12:22, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This sentence can be translated without changing the word order. I've noted the grammatical cases of the words in brackets.
"roheline õli [both nominative] sinisel lõuendil [both adessive] kinnitatud mustale paneelile [both allative]"
That sentence might also require a comma in some place, I'm not sure. I asked a friend who has a better grasp of Estonian language's grammatical details, and I'll give an update as soon as I get a response. If you have any further questions or need someone to do the translating, I'll be glad to help. —Quibik (talk) 17:46, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I got a response, consulted and thought about this sentence a bit more. It does not require any commas, but could be expressed more clearly with a different word order:
"roheline õli mustale paneelile kinnitatud sinisel lõuendil". —Quibik (talk) 18:46, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help. Two additional questions:
 • I suppose "kinnitatud" translate mounted. Is it invariable or can its form change, say when it referes to a plural non
 • Are ther grammatical genders in Estonian (eg dl adjectives change depending of wheter they refer to a masculin or a feminine word)? (I think they don't but I am not sure.)
Otherwise, it seems to work. To ease testing, maybe you can comlete the missing cases in template:technique/sandbox/et and template:technique/sandbox/et/adjectives. The definitive list should be much much longer but we'd better wait until we know exactly what the template will look like.--Zolo (talk) 10:12, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, "kinnitatud" is a translation of "mounted". It should be invariable. By the way, when translating that, I checked the word use of that verb on the website of the biggest art museum in Estonia. They usually translated "mounted" as "kleebitud" and only once as "kinnitatud". "Kleebitud" better translates as "glued" or "sticked" and "kinnitatud" as "fixed (onto something)". "Glued" seemed much too specific so I chose not to use that.
There are no grammatical genders in Estonian. I filled in the missing cases. —Quibik (talk) 14:38, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks. Let's keep the more general word if it looks all right. For your information, the list that should ultimately be translated are [TEmplate:[Technique/en/list]] and Template:technique/en/adjectives. The former is quite long with some rather obscure words...--Zolo (talk) 15:12, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have (finally) implemented it. Not as clean as I hoped but it should work. Could you check it (see , though some of the words are not yet translated into Estonian) ?--Zolo (talk) 18:34, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Everything looks correct, though I am not sure whether I should pay attention to the live version or the sandbox one – the sandbox version shows "group order" error for most entries. The only (and not that important) thing I would change is the way some words are translated. For example, chalk is translated as kriidijoonistus, lit. chalk drawing; tempera is translated as temperamaal, lit. tempera painting; so on. I would drop the "painting", "drawing", etc. —Quibik (talk) 15:08, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is the non-sandbox version. Actually the testcases page, is no longer really suitable. The sandbox is because I realised afterwards that it could be made simpler without changing the output. I have added et support for the sandbox too now, it should be the same. About translations, you can change it (the template was done by an IP) By the way the English template supports much more words. Those missing in Estonian appear in red (with an excess space before the comma but that should be fixable) e.g. sinine õlimaal, reddish glass paste, cream-colored molded glass, color dry plate collodion, polychrome antique laid paper ja hand-colored rose granite albumiinpaberil mustal gofun ja gray-green Greek insular marble kinnitatud glazed pöögipuidule). Most words from the Eglish templates are not much used so this is not very importantn but you may want to add some like "photograph", "marble" and "bronze".--Zolo (talk) 16:45, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, now that I started translating the words, I rembered something that I probably should have mentioned earlier. In Estonian language, with the exception of nominative, genitive and partitive cases, all inflectional endings (both plural and singular) are derived from the singular genitive case. So, we really only need to provide singular nominative and genitive cases for each word in the translations. Could you update the template accordingly? The inflectional endings can be found at en:Estonian grammar#Cases. —Quibik (talk) 18:38, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can try, but I am not sure to understand how it works ? Is gouache nominative: guašš, genitive: guaši ?--Zolo (talk) 19:20, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. To get the essive and lative cases used in the template you would add -l and -le respectively (guašil, guašile). Feel free to ignore my remark though, if adding this modification this would be any hassle. The only benefit of this would be that constructing phrases with any additional grammar cases would be a bit more straightforward. —Quibik (talk) 19:52, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If this perfectly regular, it should not be too difficult. But I think it will need to use #titleparts: parser, which implies that no interwiki link can be provided. Do you think it is worth it ?--Zolo (talk) 22:28, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Probably not – adding a new case using the current system should be no more difficult than running a global regex search & replace anyway. —Quibik (talk) 22:45, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I guess this is what happens when two people edit a file at the same time. I'm afraid I erased your transparency thinking it was I who added the transparency. Anyhow, I'll stop messing with that file. Go ahead and make the latest version transparent if you'd like. Actually, should it really be transparent in the first place? Your call. Sorry for the trouble. Jbarta (talk) 16:36, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Converting white to transparency requires hardly any effort anyway. Should this image be transparent? As this is essentially a logo, it seemed appropriate. But I wouldn't really mind it being opaque either. —Quibik (talk) 17:16, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
