Hello, Entertainment Buff!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Farmer on tractor Mar 60.JPG. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Farmer on tractor Mar 60.JPG) and the above demanded information in your request.

You need to email OTRS for proof that all copyrights have been waived for all of your images.  fetchcomms 21:13, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your photos[edit]

Hi JGKlein. I see that you have uploaded many, many photos taken from a "private collection" or by a "private photographer". However, if you didn't take a particular photo, it will be deleted unless you prove that the photographer gave permission to use the file with exactly the same license the image is tagged as. Otherwise, without proof that the photographer consented for their image to be used freely, the image cannot remain here. Also, if you took the photo, clearly state that it is "self made" or "own work". This will help differentiate it from your other photos.

I'm messaging you because there are some very good photos that you have uploaded, and you have obviously spent a lot of time uploading them--I hope you get the correct permission statement(s) forwarded to OTRS soon, so that none of them are deleted unnecessarily. If you have any questions you are welcome to write them here or on my talk page. - Gump Stump (talk) 19:06, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gump Stump. Is it possible that we could exchange e-mails privately for you to give me advice on how to handle the photos I have donated for public domain? I don't want my questions and our discussions to be read by everyone. I assure you that I am for real and I am a serious, well-intentioned contributor; in other words, I am really doing this as a hobby because I love Wikipedia, and I have recently become very interested in photography as another way to contribute to it. I have no hidden agenda of trying to advertise any business or promote any political belief. You can look at my Wikipedia profile and see that I have been a productive, non-biased contributor for almost 2 years, and I have had absolutely no disputes or "edit wars" with anyone, and I have been very compliant with requests and suggestions to improve my contributions.
I have a passionate interest in the entertainment industry and its history. I live in the Los Angeles area, and there are many, many interesting things in this area that I want to photograph and post on Wikipedia.
You should be able to access my e-mail address through Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. If not, let me know, and I will find some way to get it to you.
Thanks so much! JGKlein (talk) 21:41, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have tried to add categories to File:Reseda Theatre 28 March 2010.JPG. Please tell me if I did it correctly. Thanks! JGKlein (talk) 22:17, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JGKlein,

Glad to hear you are enjoying contributing to Wikipedia!

Your upload of File:Plaza De Oro, Encino 05.31.10.jpg looks almost perfect, with the exception of some minor things I changed:

 • If you put the date format as YYYY-MM-DD, then it is obvious to everyone what date your photo was taken on (some areas of the world use DD-MM-YYYY, some use MM-DD-YYYY, so this is more obvious).
 • The categories you added are "redlinks", so they don't exist. Because categories are "nested", you can type in a more general category, like "Los Angeles, California", preview the file, click the Los Angeles category link, and see what is in the Los Angeles category. There's no category for the Encino community, but there is a category for "Buildings in Los Angeles". Under that, there's a category for "Shops in Los Angeles". I would probably put that file under that category. There may be multiple categories that apply to a single picture; I also added "Shopping malls in California" as a category. That's as refined as I could get it (there is no "Shopping malls in Los Angeles" category). Using the most refined categories as possible is good, because a refined category automatically puts a picture in many other categories (e.g. "Shopping malls in California" automatically puts it in a "California" category) so you don't have to add a bunch of categories for each image. Remember also that if you can see multiple images that could fit a category, but it doesn't exist, you can create the category itself. There are guidelines to that, so read them carefully before creating a category.

For your image File:Reseda Theatre 28 March 2010.JPG, the categories didn't work, and you added an OTRS pending template (along with an image annotation?!), which is not necessary, because you took the image yourself. OTRS is for images that weren't taken by the uploader. Try adding categories to that image yourself, the same way I did for your other image.

My way is a very "manual" way of finding categories, and there are others. In any case, reading Commons:Categories is a good start. Categories are one of the most important things to add to an image (nobody will find it, otherwise) and unfortunately one of the most neglected.

For your picture File:Plaza De Oro, Encino 05.31.10.jpg, it would actually be preferable to upload the picture with the telephone number in it; the pictures here are supposed to capture real places and events, and digitally editing them (with the exception of wholesale adjustments to color, levels, sharpness, etc. which are sometimes done to original photos) are much less desirable than the original image. You can always edit an original in the future, but you can't get an original from an edited photo. If you can upload a version without the blurring you added (you can upload over top of the old version on its file page), by all means do it.

A couple more tips: if you want to add a link to a certain file (like on your or my talk page), you can put in :Image:Filename.jpg and it will add a link to the image. That first colon is important--without it you will be posting the image itself. Remember to keep picture uploads relevant to educational purposes (covered at Project scope), and upload high resolution photos if possible.

Public discourse is a very important part of Wikipedia; records of conversations with other users establish what kind of character you have as a contributor. However, if you really want to e-mail me, you can visit my talk page, and on the left hand side of the page under "Toolbox" you will see a link to "E-mail this user".

Have you made any progess with getting permission for the photos you uploaded but didn't take yourself? It looks like one of your images, Image:Farmer on tractor Mar 60.JPG has already been deleted, and the rest you didn't take yourself will probably follow if you don't have a permission e-mail sent to OTRS soon... - Gump Stump (talk) 03:38, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS procedure[edit]

Hi JGKlein. I'm not sure where you got that "fetchcomms@yahoo.com" address from, but that's not related to anything here, as far as I can tell. Here are the steps you need to take, one by one:

1) Go here to see which images you have already uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

2) Identify which images were taken by you, which were taken by your father, and which were taken by someone else. Instead of "private photographer", put the name of the person who took the picture (for the ones your father took, you can put "JGKlein's father" as the Author, if he's not comfortable with his real name being used). Other images like File:Iowa Farmer w horse drawn cart, 1920s.jpg need information about who made them (I doubt your father took that one), or how you got them.

3) If a picture was taken by you, and you have identified yourself as the "Author" and "Source" on the file page, you can remove the no permission tag on the image page (you can see which images have no permission, because on that page I linked to it's highlighted red). There may not be any of those, but maybe there are.

4) If a picture was taken by your father, open up a new e-mail (if your father has an e-mail account, please do it from his account), copy and paste the text between the quotes below, fill in any extra details I have put IN BOLD, and send the e-mail to this e-mail address: permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

DATE, AND NAME OF YOUR FATHER (THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER) (Father of User:JGKlein on Wikimedia Commons)

Your father does not have to sign a document; you just have to name him at the bottom. If he is concerned you can tell him that this e-mail does not become public; it is filed on OTRS, and is only connected to the images by a unique and anonymous ticket number. People can ask an OTRS volunteer if the ticket number is legitimate, but they can't see the e-mail.

For those pictures that were taken by other people (like the portraits of the actors), the process is a bit different. We can get to that once you are done with these. Let me know if you have questions. - Gump Stump (talk) 23:40, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Files you uploaded may be deleted[edit]

The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have not sent the permission, please send it to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. If you have, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard, quoting the file name, so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. Regarding your photograph in the Religion section of Hawaii[edit]

Hi JGkLein, I came across your photo with the description: "Church in Hawaii with elaborate architecture" The name of the church is "Makiki Christian Church" located on Honolulu, HI. Being a former employee of the church I recognized the church immediately. If you want more information about the church and it's history, please go to "WWW.MakikiChristianChurch.ORG" I'm not speaking on behalf of the church in any capacity, I only would like the decription of the photograph to be accurate and true.

Thank you in advance for time and attention given to this matter.

Regarding your 1960 Chevrolet station wagon photo[edit]

The 1960 Chevrolet station wagon you have posted here is a Parkwood, not a Nomad. The Nomad has a horizontal color contrast panel (which was usually white) on the rear fender containing an Impala/crossed flags emblem, whereas the Parkwood had a thin chrome strip in the same spot. (Ditto the Kingswood, which was the same except it had a third seat. I double checked to make sure it was not a Kingswood, which would have had step plates in the rear bumper. Both were equivalent to the Bel Air.) If you look at the Chevrolet Nomad article and compare it with the photo above (which I personally submitted), you can see the details I have described. Also, the cove in the Nomad's tailgate had a grooved chrome insert, while that on all other Chevy wagons was painted.

Sorry to do this, JG, but just looking to keep Wikipedia as factual as possible. Hope this helps!

Thanks, Josephew

Thanks for the info. I will change it. JGKlein (talk) 17:25, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your father's photos[edit]

A bunch of your father's photos have been tagged to be deleted for a while now. Did you never send an e-mail to OTRS? I thought you did. -Gump Stump (talk) 00:13, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did. I have sent the release form several times, and I keep getting this same message. It seems to go into a black hole whenever I send it. I am getting somewhat annoyed with these messages. Someone is not doing their job. JGKlein (talk) 01:10, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What e-mail address did you send it to? Can you check that for me? If you're sending it to the right place, I'll inquire with someone at the OTRS noticeboard about what's happened. They'll be able to tell us what's going on on their end. -Gump Stump (talk) 20:49, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We did receive the 2010-09-05 email, but somebody seems to have made a mistake with it. The images have now been marked as confirmed. Jcb (talk) 01:53, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Barbers Point Photos[edit]

Hello JGKlein. I'm a board member with the Naval Air Museum Barbers Point. We're in the process of writing a book on the history of Naval Air Station Barbers Point, and are collecting photographs to use in it. Would you and your father have anything that you'd be willing to donate? (If you're wondering, all profits from the book will be going to support the Museum.)

NAMBarbersPoint (talk) 08:43, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I happened to notice your query above because JGKlein is on my watch list. JGKlein hasn't edited here in 9 months, so you may not get an answer from him or her.
Anything you find on Commons may be used for your book provided that you follow the license terms, which usually require attribution (a credit line). I suggest you read Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. If you have questions, drop a note on my talk page. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 10:31, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello NAMBarbersPoint. You are free to use any and all of the Barber's Point photographs. My father, who is still living, will be honored that you want to use them. JGKlein (talk) 12:08, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. New personal username due to missing the restriction on using organization names (sorry, Jameslwoodward, and thanks). Had seen the reuse terms (thanks for the link, though), but asked specifically hoping there might be additional photos available. JGKlein's uploads appear to only contain the one photo of the front gate of Barbers, but his father seems to have had a long and fruitfully-photographed career in the Navy. If so, please feel free to contact me via the email link on my user page. Thanks! -- TeamNutmeg (talk) 19:36, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Flora Robson in "Saratoga Trunk" (1945 film).JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
 • use in any work, regardless of content
 • creation of derivative works
 • commercial use
 • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works.
