[edit] Category:John Bosco
| Category discussion notification | Category:John Bosco has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. |

[edit] OTRS
Dude, then where is it?--TheZachMorrisExperience (talk) 17:03, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
- There was no OTRS tag on these images. If there's a mass OTRS from the PA H&MC, then that is good to go. Otherwise, these images are up for deletion.--TheZachMorrisExperience (talk) 17:09, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
- I'm following correct procedures. You're the one who's reverting deletion tags. If you disagree with the deletions, feel free to make your case.--TheZachMorrisExperience (talk) 17:11, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
- [1] I meant "make your case" on the deletion notices, not the admin board. Historically, the PA H&MC has threatened suit over copyvios exactly like these. --TheZachMorrisExperience (talk) 17:47, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Hey, I am sorry that you felt my actions were too quick and contrary to the policy of cultivating consensus. But, I am trying to cultivate a consensus: if you take a look at the deletion nomination pages, you can see that I responded in a serious way to your concerns over copyright. Nominating things for deletion is up to the individual, but consensus comes on whether to delete, not whether to nominate. The admin notice is fine, you gotta do what you gotta do. The most likely result from this is they'll tell us to stop bickering, and I think we can do that without being told to do so. So, we can hash out the copyright issue here and on the deletion pages.
Here, maybe I can clear up some of your confusion regarding copyright. Basically, anything created by humans is copyrightable. And sine the 1970s, things are automatically copyrighted, even if the owner is unknown and never files for copyright. Now, things can pass into public domain several ways, by copyright expiration (if they were created before 1923), by the author dying 70 years ago, or by release by the author. This is where OTRS comes in, since wikipedia wants to keep email record of the authors' copyright release into a "free license" (either Public domain or a close substitute like cc-by). Also, an object may escape copyright protection by freedom of panorama, which says that you can take a picture of anything that is visible from a public area. This is important, because things like buildings are copyright. So, that means you can take a picture of the Sears tower, but you cannot build your own. But, freedom of panorama is not 100%, there are exceptions to the exception. Things like sculptures, art, and other human-made non building things maintain their copyright even if they're visible to the public. (Here's a perfect example of a sculpture in the public's view that is exempted from freedom of panorama: Chicago's The Bean. That image has a "fair use rationale" because the freedom of panorama does not apply). Images in the commons may only be under free license, so things like The Bean and the Ten Commandments plaque must be deleted.
If you like, these images can be added to wikipedia under a fair use provision. Fair use is when a copyright work is used without the author's permission as an object of critical commentary, like quoting a book in a book review. If you like, I am pretty experienced in fair use images, as you can see here: w:User:TheZachMorrisExperience/FairUsePictures, and I can help you get them ready to go for wikipedia. I would do it, but I can't see these images getting much attention in articles. Except w:Image:JohnBirchSocietyUSOutOfUNSign.jpg and w:Image:PittsburghPenguinsBannerGrantAve2008.jpg, which I have preserved with fair use rationales on wikipedia. I have discussed some copyright issues with w:User:Bobak, an attorney, and he might be able to answer any of your other questions.--TheZachMorrisExperience (talk) 01:30, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

- It is not resolved yet. I received some of your emails, asking the copyright holder for permission. What I didn't receive was the copyright holder agreeing to release that, as well as a license specification. Do you have this? - Rjd0060 (talk) 18:51, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
- I have it. Unfortunately, it needs to be a bit more clear than that. He really needs to say something to the effect of "I am the copyright holder of http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Tony_Gilkyson.jpg and I release it under the <licence name>". I know it seems like we're making you jump through hoops, but this is necessary. Is there any way you can contact him again? [edit] Accurate info on transfered images
Hi. I hope I haven't seemed rude with my edits at Image:Tournament-of-Roses-Chariot-Race-1908.jpg. My purpose is to try to have accurate information on image description pages. The interwiki transfer bots can be useful tools, but by nature they are stupid, often producing misinformation unless users keep a close eye and make corrections during the process. If bots with default setting for images original to Wikipedia are used to transfer images that did not originate with Wikipedia, the information displayed will generally be wrong unless the uploader takes care of fixing it. Yes, I find image description pages with bot generated garbage frustrating. If you have suggestions for improving the situation, I welcome hearing them. Thanks for your attention. Best wishes, -- Infrogmation (talk) 22:57, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Naked while wearing pants, again
Hi. I know this has been brought up before. While you may not acknowledge a distinction between "naked" and "topless", many others find the distinction useful. I'd appreciate if you categorize accordingly, and IMO categorized image will be more useful with such details taken into account. Thanks much! Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 05:23, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
- Answered on your page . Evrik (talk) 13:37, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, I replied there. Meanwhile, I notice you just created Category:Naked recumbent women, making it a subcat of recumbent women. I shall add category:nude women as well, as it seems to be an intersection of those two categories rather than only a subcat of the first. Are we in agreement on that point? Thanks for your attention. -- Infrogmation (talk) 14:36, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Category:Santos
Hi there! Santos is a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. It is not the town of Santos Dumont in the state of Minas Gerais. That category really shouldn't have been redirected; now there are dozens of Santos-related files in Category:Saints. Best, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 12:15, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Category:Santos, São Paulo should do it—Santos Dumont, Minas Gerais is certainly not appropriate, as it's another city, in another state, hundreds of miles away! :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 02:31, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- And now, after this, SieBot has moved them to Category:Santos Dumont, Minas Gerais. Is there any way to revert these quickly or will I have to undo them manually again? All the files currently in Category:Santos Dumont, Minas Gerais should be in Category:Santos, São Paulo—is that fine by you? Fvasconcellos (t·c)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

[edit] Dates
[edit] February 1?
Could you expand on the purpose/rationale for the February 1 gallery? It doesn't seem like a particularly notable day, and it's not clear what some of the images you've included are related to the day. If we're going to create galleries for each day of the year, that should probably be discussed somewhere first. 75.214.74.91 (really, w:User:JesseW/not logged in) 08:18, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- I now noticed that you have been creating gallerys for every day of the year -- but your image choices seem rather unclear. I just randomly looked at the January 8 page, and all that is on it is a photo of Elvis. The only connection I can see between that photo and January 8 is that the most recent version of the picture that is cropped from was uploaded on that day. This seems, um, tenuous at best. I'm concerned. 75.214.74.91 (really, w:User:JesseW/not logged in) 08:23, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- First, about Elvis, because isn't everything really about Elvis ... it's his birthday. I think the galleries are a good way to link people back to where most of the relevant information about each day is. Feel free to expand the gallery, that's what it's there for. On some of the days, I have cut and pasted the interwikis. I feel that putting the galleries in place will make the commons more functional in how information is presented. Evrik (talk) 16:31, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
-
- Well, at a minimum, you should mention on the pages the rationale for why each image is included; e.g. birthday, or whatever else it is. I'm still not really clear what your purpose is -- Commons isn't about information, relevant or not, it's about media -- and I still don't see how nearly all images would be usefully categorized by date. Could you expand on what, besides birth days, you consider inclusion criteria? JesseW (talk) 21:02, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- The commons is about media, and that is information. Making the media easy to find is a goal that many editors work towards. Yes, I do include the rationale. It is a reasonble expectation, one I don't always meet. There is not always one metric. Most days of the year have some relevant occurence. I'm leaving it broad so people can fill it in as they see fit. Evrik (talk) 21:53, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
-
- Well, looking back at the pages now that they have rationales, they look a lot better -- now it just looks like a quirky, but meaningful categorization system rather than some sort of odd bot-produced error, which is what I first thought when I saw them. I still don't find them that interesting myself, but, (with rationales) they seem perfectly acceptable -- we have lots of odd things on the 'wiki. Enjoy your work on them, and thanks for adding the rationales! JesseW (talk) 07:36, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Date galleries
Do you think the ThisDateInRecentYears template is really useful on the date galleries that you are creating? I don't see much use for them. Additionally, is there really a value in creating the date galleries instead of just leaving them as categories? Am I wrong in thinking that it creates redundancies? January 31 is pretty much the same as Category:31 January, isn't it? -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 23:19, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
- There are several reasons why I think the galleries are a good idea. First, if you look at what links to February 1, you'll see that a number of images already link to that gallery - so the galleries remove redlinks. Second, since the catgeories generally don't list a lot of information about the subject, I think the galleries are a good way to link people back to where most of the relevant information about each day is, again, look at some of the images highlighted on February 1. I don't think it creates redundancies. Now, the ThisDateInRecentYears may not be useful, but on my list of things to do is reworking that template so that it either a) directs people to a category on the commons like Category:February 2008 or b) to the appropriate page on the English wiki. I would appreciate your thoughts on some of this. Thanks. Evrik (talk) 15:18, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
-
- Am I wrong in my impression that this creates a management nightmare? Someone has to manually add all of the related images to each date page. These images already display on the category page. I would think that an effort should be made to unlink the dates rather than create pages just because something happens to link to them. Commons isn't an encyclopedia with information about its content. I think you're trying to create content where content doesn't belong. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 18:18, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- Management nightmare? No, I don't think so. No more so than any of the corresponding pages on any of the wikipedias. You're right that Commons isn't an encyclopedia with information about its content, but that doesn't mean that it should be devoid of content. The gallery pages exist to give the images some context, and a place to look for other information. It's not a terribly difficult process, and I have nibbled away about about 20% of the year so far. I could use some help formatting a couple of the templates and would appreciate your help. Evrik (talk) 18:27, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- What kind of help do you need? Apart from populating the date pages - that's too mundane even for me. I still think you'll have trouble keeping them up to date if you can't make it so that the date pages pull their info straight from the categories. And what happens to the date pages when you retire? Does Commons have projects for stuff like that to get greater involvement? -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 19:31, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
-
- The ThisDateInRecentYears needs reworking so that it either a) directs people to a category on the commons like Category:February 2008 or b) to the appropriate page on the English wiki. You seem good at that. 20:42, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Done Let me know what you think. I changed it to link to categories. I also moved it to ThisMonthInRecentYears because that is more descriptive of what it does. When you create new date pages you can use that template. The existing ones can be changed at your convenience but in the meantime, the redirect will work. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 23:41, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- I changed all of the calendar templates to link to categories. Might be a better idea to link to generic months (e.g. February instead of February CURRENTYEAR). Thoughts? -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 22:02, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
-
- Two suggestions:
- There is a typo in the date articles in "Media related to the August 13" (extra the). As you continue, perhaps you can fix it.
- Suggest adding each date page to a common category. That will make future format changes easier to do across the board.
- -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 22:43, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- Two suggestions:
- I'll work on the extra "the." In the category tree, the common category is Category:Days, and then under each is the month, like Category:Days in August. I don't know what other common category there could be. Each individual day does link to Months. That is the one common demoninator. Evrik (talk) 16:20, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
-
-
- The days are not in the Category:Days so they are not in a common category. To clarify: April 1 is not in Category:Days. Category:1 April is in Category:Days. Having a common feature like Months doesn't make it easy to use tools like AWB which use categories. Maybe we can add Category:Days to the Months template. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 16:43, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- I added it to Months. Is it good there, or should I add it to ThisMonthInRecentYears? Which is most likely only to be used on the date pages. I don't think there is a need to hide it. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 16:51, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi Evrik, please don't use Category redirect to get categories renamed. You should use move like this. Thank you, Multichill (talk) 16:21, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- When Category:Lazaretos was created it was different noun than Category:Lazaretto - the one currently in use on the en wiki. This is really not a controversial fix. I know about Commons:Rename a category, but is there a policy on this? Evrik (talk) 21:47, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm, didn't know we had a policy page encouraging the misuse of category redirect. Category namespace is one big mess policy wise so it doesn't really surprise me. Oh btw, please don't hop talk pages. I have a watchlist and i happen to use it. Multichill (talk) 21:58, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- That page was created by User:Pfctdayelise ... so if you have issues with it ... anyway, I don't really think it was a misuse, but if I happen to see a controversial change I'll keep in mind what you're saying. Evrik (talk) 22:10, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] en.wiki ANI thread on one of your uploads, File:Margaret Taylor.gif
Hi. Someone is claiming IP rights to an image you uploaded, and it's being discussed at en.wiki ANI. See w:Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Someone claiming IP ownership of photo that was taken circa 1845. Thanks. Dynaflow (talk) 11:07, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
- I've left a link to the ANI thread at the image page. Since the bulk of the conversation is happening there, and since I've e-mailed Mike Godwin to take a look at it there, I think the conversation should stay centralized on en.wiki, where it began. Dynaflow (talk) 17:06, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
- I don't know the back alleys of Commons very well. Can you possibly post a link to and summary of the ANI thread wherever you think is appropriate? I'd like to keep the conversation all in one place, though, so we get all eyes looking at the same things, and for now that place is at ANI. Oh, please leave messages for me at my en.wiki Talk page. I might not catch messages left on Commons for a long, long time. Thanks. Dynaflow (talk) 19:23, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Dali
The appropriate place for the discussion is the policy change talk page. Once that is ironed out, the image can be undeleted without any further discussion. But until such point, it is not de minimis per Commons now and is thus out of scope, as explained by MichaelMaggs in the discussion, including his conversation with Mike. The closure was not an indication that this must be salted never to return, but at THIS point, the conversation belongs on the de minimis policy page, not at COM:UND. Thanks! -- Avi (talk) 17:32, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
- The GC does not decide policy or matters of scope, Evrik, we Commonists do. Everyone but yourself believes that the image is NOT de minimis now and will not be until the Commons de minimis policy is changed. Please respect that and work on changing the Commons de minimis policy instead. That is the appropriate venue. -- Avi (talk) 17:53, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
- Evrik, if the consensus of the respondents in the discussion is not to restore it until the policy is clarified, the discussion should be closed. Do you realize that you are single-handedly ignoring the consensus opinion of all the other respondents? -- Avi (talk) 18:10, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
- The discussion is over, Evrik. Everyone but yourself wants the image to be deleted until the policy is ironed out. Keeping it open will not return the image faster. -- Avi (talk) 18:16, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Evrik, this is just an unasked for piece of friendly advice. Your behavior in re-opening the discussion is grounds for a behavioral complaint. Furthermore, you may be alienating people who agree with you that the policy should be adjusted because of your perceived intransigence and possible lack of a desire to work with other people. My advice to you would be to accept the consensus on COM:UNDEL and work to quickly adjust the de minimis policy so thatthe image comes back into scope. Feel free to ignore me :) -- Avi (talk) 18:29, 15 March 2009 (UTC) /
Evrik. I'm going to reinsert Tryphons second closure of this undeletion request. A new undeletion request may be filed if, and only if, our policy of de minimis is changed. Do not revert this closure again. Regards, Finn Rindahl (talk) 18:45, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
I second the above comments. Your re-opening of closed DRs is disruptive. Let me be frank: you are at risk on being blocked if you do it again. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:47, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Sonia Sotomayor images
Hello! I had reverted the image Image:Sonia Sotomayor.jpg back to the original crop with her torso and arm showing, because some projects may prefer that one to the close crop; if we leave the close crop available as Image:Sonia Sotomayor crop.jpg they can choose which version to use. I understand if you prefer the cropped version, but if we leave it available under the "crop" name there is no reason to change the first image to the cropped version. Hopefully we can come to an agreement on this instead of reverting eachother ;) Best, -- Editor at Large • talk 19:59, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] File:King Edward I.jpg
Hello Evrik. The problem with the image wasn't FOP. The image was most probably taken from a random webpage under the provision of "pd-art". We're free to copy "pd-art" pictures from whichever webpage we like, as long as they're 2-d reproductions. Pictures of 3-d objects/statues (that themselves, i.e. the statues, are into public domain) ain't in the public domain but copyright of their respective photographers. So that's why i deleted it. Why is Category:Sonia Sotomayor in Category:Roman Catholicism in the United States? No other person - not even clergy - is in this category. She is not particularly a religious figure. Seems to me like a strange categorization: we do not normally put people whose significance is mainly secular in categories by their religious affiliation. - Jmabel ! talk 06:50, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi. The owner of the file just contacted OTRS claiming a copyright vio on the file, and the flickr page does show all rights reserved, so I deleted the file. Just a heads up; thanks. -- Avi (talk) 17:51, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
- You did the review, yes, and it seems that there is some contradictory e-mails in the system. You yourself did nothing wrong, this was just a head's up b/c your name was attached to the file. -- Avi (talk) 17:22, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- With copyvios we have to be careful, and the tag now is clearly All Rights Reserved. The owner has been contacted for clarification. -- Avi (talk) 18:18, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- There is concern that the person who "freely released it" is not the copyright holder; which is what is trying to be clarified now. -- Avi (talk) 18:31, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
- I think there are legal reasons why it needs to be deleted as a copyvio once we are informed by the person who now controls the flickr account. You can open a DR for it if you wish (please drop me a line if you do) but I recommend waiting until we hear back from the owner, as if the most recent e-mail is true, the permission that you forwarded to OTRS is invalid (sent by someone who had no right to send it) and we were never allowed to have it in the first place. -- Avi (talk) 18:48, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you.

Hello Evrik!
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Commons images are used by editors on many projects in many languages. Each image is put into categories. This helps other editors find them. Please add categories to each image you upload.
To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.
-
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbit of comets, add the following to the image description page:
-
-
This will make the diagram show up in the categories: Astronomy diagrams, Comets.
For further information on categories read Commons:Categories.
The CommonSense Tool often helps you find the best category for your image.
Here is a gallery of your images. Please check that each image has a category. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the help desk. Thank you.

[edit] Template:ThisMonthInRecentYears
Hello, I saw that you reverted my edit because it broke the template. Can you tell me what's your intention with the template, maybe I'll be able to write a better code then. Thank you. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:32, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but I don't get it. The only thing that I changed was to make the template localizable and to auto-update the year with the parser function . The localizing part matters, as Commons is also for non-English speakers and these pages now get a lot more traffic since linked from the Main Page. The #time function is useful as it automatically finds out the year so you don't have to update it any year. --The Evil IP address (talk) 14:45, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, right.
Fixed. --The Evil IP address (talk) 13:06, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
- That's good, however for the German language, this is a bit more complicated. Ordinal doesn't yet have anything for German, and this will also be a bit more complicated. In German, you say "fivetwentieth" instead of twentyfifth, or "seventhirtieth", so there are a bit more possible endings. English is a really good language for templates, as it doesn't change as often as German does (for example German has 126 different plural endings, unlike English that has only very few irregular endings). I'm gonna try it in the next time. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:57, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Done, took me a bit to figure out the how-to but then it was actually kinda easy, using Date works like magic here. For the abbreviations for the days, there are system messages like for example for "Mon", which I could just use. It's also really nice what you did with the day galleries, especially after localizing the templates, which makes them usable in other languages as well. --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:09, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

AWB is not the strongest tool for categorization, it is only semi-automatic, so you must save every edit but you can edit much faster many pages from one category, one search, or one user, e.g..
