Thanks[edit]
I had been warned that doing the pre-1913 (!!) card images was a risky business, your talk page is a clear record of some of the difficulties - of anything to do with uploading - thanks for your category fixes... cheers and keep up the good work SatuSuro (talk) 00:36, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
- I think the person who said that probably meant post-1913. Generally speaking the older the image, the less likely there are to be copyright issues, but it can all get a bit complex. Afraid there is no guarantees around here, I have uploaded many images here, not just ones I have taken and the deleted ones are just a fraction of them, it's not as bad as it might look, Thanks for the kind words, best Oxyman (talk) 01:31, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
New rights[edit]
I changed your user rights to patroller and filemover, because I think you could use it :) --Funfood ␌ 12:42, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for this, it may take some time for me to learn how best to use these fetures, I do usually figure out how these things work in the end and suspect I will soon benefit, Thanks again Oxyman (talk) 13:33, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
Greenwich[edit]
I'm a bit at odds about this move - since Greemwich wasn't a royal borough in 2011, technically nothing happened in the royal borough in 2011. Pedantically, there should be two 2012 categories too... -mattbuck (Talk) 21:55, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- That is of course true, however the current borough structure in London was created on 1 April 1965, before that there were the metropolitan boroughs, So if we are to apply that logic consistently the following categories are at fault;
- Category:1961 in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham
- Category:1852 in the London Borough of Camden
- Category:1861 in the London Borough of Camden
- Category:1870 in the London Borough of Camden
- Category:1928 in the London Borough of Camden
- Category:1957 in the London Borough of Camden
- Category:1960 in the London Borough of Camden
- Category:1838 in the London Borough of Harrow
- Category:1957 in the London Borough of Harrow
- Category:1861 in the London Borough of Islington
- Category:1862 in the London Borough of Islington
It will get very complex if we are to sort those images into the pre 1965 boroughs will it not? That said I can see an argument for doing so. When I proposed the move I just wanted the subcats of 'Royal Borough of Greenwich' to be consistent. That said it's clear you have put allot of effort into the history by borough cat and maybe you have a better system in mind Oxyman (talk) 22:39, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- I honestly haven't put much effort in at all, I just wanted to categorise all St Pancras photos. No real objection beyond pedantry. -mattbuck (Talk) 00:01, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

UK FoP etc[edit]
Hi Oxyman. I just wanted to leave you a quick note about the copyvio images that have been found amongst the batch uploads you've done. You should have a look at Commons:Freedom of panorama#United Kingdom and maybe COM:DW, so that you can weed out images of copyrighted 2D works, adds, etc. Also, your talkpage is getting a bit unwieldly and tough to load. Let me know if you'd like me to help with setting up archiving. Thanks for your time. INeverCry 22:10, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
- I was weeding out some of the images, but so easy to miss them. Yes, how do you archive the talk page? much of the things on this site are a mystery to me Oxyman (talk) 01:00, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'll set it up for you. INeverCry 01:25, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- Great, do I have to do anything? Oxyman (talk) 01:30, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- Not really. I've archived your older stuff. You'll see it up in the right top corner under "2007-2012". I've also set up a bot that will automatically archive messages when they're 2 weeks old. These will go to the 2nd archive I made which is above labeled "2012-". Let me know if there's anything you'd like to change about this. The 2nd archive should last for years, as long as you don't pick up too many more deletion notices. ;) INeverCry 01:46, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for this, Will try and cut down on the copyvios Oxyman (talk) 01:54, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Bot uploads[edit]
Good work, but including these in Category:England is unhelpful if there are more precise categories. I come back to this daily, only to find more to sort out, and to be honest, I'd like to finish before Christmas. Thanks. Rodhullandemu (talk) 01:40, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- The bot added that and some other categories of it's own accord, I tried selecting "no tags" but the bot still added cats, Maybe I missed something, sorry about that. Oxyman (talk) 01:43, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- I notice that Magnus disclaims responsibility for his bot, but sometimes it does more harm than good with categories, e.g. assuming London postcodes, when the category is a European route (E11) or a Polish railway (W4). Is there no better way to do this? Meanwhile, goodnight. Rodhullandemu (talk) 01:51, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
- Is there a bot I can use that doesn't add categories? This is the only one I'm aware of. an option to turn of that feature would be nice Oxyman (talk) 02:45, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

- For crying out loud mate, when you're uploading railway photos
- Be a bit more selective - File:Worcester Shrub Hill Station - First Great Western - Class 43 High Speed Train - ghosting (6365679337).jpg is absolutely useless - there's a white blur, nothing more. Well, was, it's deleted now.
- Don't upload copyright violations - There is no freedom of panorama in the UK for 2D works, so if a photo is of a 2D artwork or sufficiently complex sign, it's a copyvio. I just deleted more than 30 of the files you uploaded.

Thanks for uploading File:Sperrlash!! (536381390).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Sperrlash!! Please give images good descriptions[edit]
Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. It also helps those that review and improve categories do a better job, which also ensures that images will get used in novel and interesting ways. Thanks, and happy editing!

Confused: can you help?[edit]
Looking at File:The Crumpled Horn - geograph.org.uk - 1222238.jpg, which is 87k and credited to you on Geograph [1], it appears to be identical to File:Upminster 041.jpg, which is 4.12 Mb and credited by User:Panhard as "own work"- but contains EXIF data. My inclination is that we should keep the larger image as it has the EXIF data, but there is no link to it on Geograph. Can you enlighten me? Rodhullandemu (talk) 00:38, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- I opened that account just to upload large amounts of files, was having difficulty using this account with the upload tool. At the time you could not upload full the resolution to Geograph. I had no idea that all the Geography files were going to be uploaded here so uploaded many here also. There are allot of files duplicated in this way, not sure what to do about them but my inclination is the same as yours, but remember to copy the Geocoading from the Geograph image onto the larger image before deletion Oxyman (talk) 05:44, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- OK thanks, I've done that and tagged the smaller version as a duplicate. Rodhullandemu (talk) 16:13, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Help identifying duplicates[edit]
Hi Oxyman, I have just started populating Category:Uploads by Oxyman which I hope can help with automatically tracking down certain types of duplicates. This is a problem I have had with batch uploading and I have set up a script to check for files with likely duplicate names and see if they are duplicates or not, in an easy report for the user. You can see examples at User talk:MaybeMaybeMaybe and User talk:Ultra7. If my script finds duplicates I can report them here but would leave it as your call as to what to do about them. This might take a few days to finish off.
Thinking about the case above where the filename is not similar, I might refine my script to test where the duplicate has been marked already (the duplicate itself may not even be your upload)... I'll ponder how to do best do that one for my back-burner. :-) Cheers --Fæ (talk) 06:33, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- I suspect there will be are large number of these, it could be in the thousands. Some kind of automated deletion process may be necessary. Also I have uploaded many images with similar names but are not duplicates. Oxyman (talk) 17:26, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- My script uses the image checksum to see if they are duplicates, so only picks up on those that really are identical, rather that making assumptions based on title. If there are indeed thousands then I can sort that out once I have a list. I suspect it will not be anywhere near that many, particularly as I'm not yet detecting those with dissimilar titles as the starting point for a check. Those of use who use upload tools for large numbers of uploads run into this duplicate file problem a lot, so if there are a number of duplicates to delete with a bit of housekeeping this is more of a reflection of the tool problem rather than anything you could have found a way to avoid, so don't fret, I'm happy to help when there's a list to sort out. Hopefully there'll be ever better tools available soon which do a better and more defensive job when it comes to detecting duplicates at the point of upload. --Fæ (talk) 17:42, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, thinking about it now maybe I did go overboard when I said thousands, I'll guess we'll just have to see, but I do think there could be 100 or so Geograph ones like the case above Oxyman (talk) 18:36, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Duplicate analysis[edit]
Note: This is currently only A-B, I'll update the table when more are categorized and I re-run the duplicate test script. --Fæ (talk) 16:53, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Done
- I am inclined to mark all the duplicates as such but the origionals are not in cat"Uploads by Oxyman", shall I just ignore this? Oxyman (talk) 18:54, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- If others have uploaded duplicates of your originals rather than the reverse, go for it, it's all good housekeeping. {{Duplicate}} is easy to use, and it's up to the deleting admin to understand what is going on. The alternative is to wait until the table is complete (hopefully before Christmas!) and then either contact a friendly admin to do the lot, by looking at the table rather than marking them all up, or I can stick these in on a sandbox page and apply the duplicate template using VisualFileChange and they get added to the deletion backlog. No hurry, I've pasted this initial set here so you get an idea of what this looks like. Cheers --Fæ (talk) 23:00, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'll just add that I am still going through Category:Pubs in London, dispersing to lower levels, and tagging dupes when I see them; since deleting admins usually leave a redirect, there won't be any redlinks in the process, but there may be some deletions. However, I expect to get on to Category:Former pubs in London for dispersion at the end of this week. Rodhullandemu (talk) 23:06, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
The duplicate detection is only looking for files with identical names apart from series numbers and flickr numbers, so there are potentially more duplicates not related to how the upload tools work. If this list is too many to process, let me know and I'll sort out tagging the duplicates with the longest filenames using VisualFileChange, though probably sometime after Christmas.
Happy holidays! --Fæ (talk) 07:31, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, if you have some way of automating the deletion of duplicates, utilisation of it would be appreciated Oxyman (talk) 23:02, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll sort this out, though probably not on Christmas Day. ;-) Cheers --Fæ (talk) 23:14, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
- Done All the files in the table have been marked as duplicates. There is a well know backlog of these for deletion by admins, so it may take a while yet. Thanks --Fæ (talk) 07:05, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
Deeper duplicate analysis[edit]
Hi, the method I used previously for finding duplicate images was very limited, in that it only used the checksum for the image to compare with any matching page with the same title apart from the Flickr ID or a sequence number. I have now used Common's API to pull up mediawiki's own analysis of duplicates to generate a list. I did this to create Category:Uploads by Princess Mérida (duplicates) which is still being generated as its parent list is still being populated. I have used your own upload category to test out the script and generated the following list of 165 images (which is around 1% of your tool-based uploads):
List of files with duplicates of any title |
---|
[START]
[END] |
There are a couple of things I could do with this list and would prefer you to choose. For example I could (a) just leave it with you to check through this remaining list and decide on a case by case basis if there needs to be any action, or (b) I could automatically add the {{Duplicate}} template using the first duplicate match on each file (more tricky but do-able) or (c) I can create a sub-category of the upload category and move them there so that an admin can delete them all (if you are confident these are unnecessary duplicates rather that the best image page for that image; there needs to be some weeding first, Woodhams_Yard_Barry are two images which are duplicates of each other on this list, and we would not want to delete both). Note, I am taking option (c) for my own uploads. Cheers --Fæ (talk) 07:38, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks again for your excellent work, I'm happy with either (b) or (c) with a slight preference for (c) Oxyman (talk) 08:47, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- Cool, I'll make (c) happen shortly. --Fæ (talk) 09:15, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
[edit]
I do not appreciate being described as having "damaged" these categories and their use for navigation.
There are a dozen of these categories in total. When they share a parent, we give readers a useful navigational structure. When they are reduced to a strict one-parent hierarchy, then the hierarchy hides itself away from users and makes itself useless. Why require readers to traverse up and down a tree, simply so that their destination can be hidden from them, all from some slavish obsession to a simplistic policy at WP:OVERCAT. This also leads to the nonsense where the Science Museum's least-mobile exhibit ends up categorised as a "vehicle".
These categories should return to being a simple flat list. Tree relations can be added as well, but breaking the simple flat list breaks accessible navigation for readers. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:11, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
- My issue was this navigation Category:Vehicles in London/Category:Vehicles in the Science Museum (London)/Category:Road vehicles in the Science Museum (London), etc compared with Category:Vehicles in London/Category:Vehicles in the Science Museum (London) no further as the structure has been altered. This is a useful linear navigation not possible if the tree relation is broken. I am however prepared to accept that 'Tree relations can be added as well' So have edited accordingly Oxyman (talk) 15:29, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Category[edit]
Hi, by accident I have found a couple of wrongly categorised files. They were uploaded on 12 March 2013.
They were: Beaulieu National Motor Museum 18-09-2012 (8542109406).jpg
and Beaulieu National Motor Museum 18-09-2012 (8542018334).jpg
I am just concerned to track down any more that you might have uploaded that day and have the same mistake. Can you tell me how I can check? Thanks and regards, Eddaido (talk) 02:02, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

FOP terminology[edit]
Hi,
You may want to re-read COM:FOP#UK, as you tend to use the wrong terminology in deletion requests, in a way that could lead to you being misinterpreted. For example, with this comment).
"Works of artistic craftsmanship" are things like "hand-painted tiles, stained glass, wrought iron gates, and the products of high-class printing, bookbinding, cutlery, needlework and cabinet-making." These are covered by FOP in the same way as sculptures and buildings. In contrast, graphic works (eg paintings) and literary works (eg paragraphs of text) are not covered by FOP; and they are not "works of artistic craftsmanship".
In the specific case you stated "I don't believe X qualifies as [a class of work covered by FOP]", which suggests you think it should be deleted. A better phrasing would have been "I do not believe Qualifies as a work of artistic craftsmanship. should be deleted, as lettering font is too simple be copyrighted...--Nilfanion (talk) 13:41, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
