Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, Camocon!

File:Saxon-Knights-shield.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.

If you can't tell the difference between "bosheth" and "basket"[sic], then maybe you shouldn't be the one to add "information" of this nature... AnonMoos (talk) 00:29, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nevertheless, the Commons category page is not the place for an extended disquisition of that type (especially since the category is "Astarte", not "Ashtoreth"). AnonMoos (talk) 22:45, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Statuette Goddess Louvre AO20127.jpg[edit]

Unfortunately, what you added contradicts what was already there. AnonMoos (talk) 00:29, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Astarte with horns.jpg[edit]

If most scholars say it's a crescent, why are you saying it's horns? Wouldn't horns usually be depicted more above the ears, rather than right on top of the head? AnonMoos (talk) 22:55, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you want kind-of-crescents which are also kind-of-horns, then I already uploaded an image almost two years ago, which shows this: File:RWS02 High-Priestess crown.svg. However, I don't think that File:Astarte with horns.jpg really qualifies... AnonMoos (talk) 01:26, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Moon Goddess Tanit.jpg[edit]

That this particular archaeological artefact represents a "Moon Goddess Tanit" is pretty much pure speculation... AnonMoos (talk) 22:55, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If it's not worthy of mention in the en:Lady of Elche article, then it's fairly pointless and counterproductive for you to be spinning elaborate theories here on Commons... AnonMoos (talk) 01:30, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Did you personally take that photograph? If you scanned it in from a book, then its copyright status is likely to be quite dubious... AnonMoos (talk) 01:33, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You haven't violated any Commons policies as such yet, as far as I know, but unfortunately very little of what you do here usefully helps towards achieving the goals of Commons... AnonMoos (talk) 00:13, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please try to conduct your activities on Commons in a way which leads to a useful result, rather than merely indulging your personal (and apparently somewhat eccentric) beliefs[edit]

Unfortunately, the category you created Category:Horned Goddess was basically completely and utterly useless here, since 1) Depictions of women/goddesses with crescents on their heads are not usually considered to be "horned". 2) The Hathor headdress is more often depicted as a horned crown, rather than someone with horns growing directly out of her head (as would seem to be implied by the term "Horned goddess"). 3) There is no real commonality or accepted relationship/connection between women/goddesses with crescents on their heads and the Hathor headdress (except in your own mind). 4) There is no pre-existing established "meme" of a horned goddess (the way that there is a pre-existing established horned god of Wicca etc.). I just now created Category:Women with a crescent on their head, which salvages what is somewhat useful from your failed experiment... AnonMoos (talk) 07:33, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Whatever, dude -- I'm not particularly "stalking" you, but I have 13,708 pages on my watchlist, the majority of them images which are symbolic in some capacity. Some of your statements have some degree of validity; nevertheless the category "Horned Goddess" in the form in which you set it up involved a large amount of Begging the question and had no real usefulness here on Wikimedia Commons... AnonMoos (talk) 01:29, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I was the one who uploaded the image File:RWS02 High-Priestess crown.svg (which shows a certain real commonality between horns and crescents), over a year before you made your first edit here, but I didn't use it to push a bunch of historically-dubious theories... AnonMoos (talk) 01:38, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry if we got off on the wrong foot, but the first edit of yours that I encountered to a page on my watchlist -- the addition of an irrelevant ranting tirade in which Hebrew "bosheth" somehow came out as "basket"(!!) -- really did not inspire great confidence... AnonMoos (talk) 02:36, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. You can still establish a category for the Hathor head-dress, Hathor crown, or Hathor disk-with-horns -- the objection to the other category was the indiscriminate mingling of the Hathor crown with women with a crescent on their head... AnonMoos (talk) 03:53, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Camocon!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hate to be ultra-picky, but is this a pure personal invention on your part? If so, you need to add it to Category:Neopagan symbols, and if not, it would be nice to give some kind of source... AnonMoos (talk) 14:25, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It in fact does not include the most well-known and widely-attested forms of the Tanit symbol (see File:Tanit-Symbol.svg, File:Tanit-Symbol-alternate.svg, File:Flag Tanit Symbol.svg etc.). And you didn't answer my question -- if only modern, it needs to go into Category:Neopagan symbols; if ancient, it will need some kind of source before it can be incorporated into a Wikipedia article... AnonMoos (talk) 18:41, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't want to always be finding fault, but it should really be "Solar disk headdresses with horns"... AnonMoos (talk) 03:24, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Categories can't be directly renamed here; the only way is to create a new category with the new name and move all the images to it. P.S. "Horned headdresses with solar discs" would also be OK... AnonMoos (talk) 05:25, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.[edit]

The phrase "horned goddess" is actually included in the appendix to Frank Herbert's classic science-fiction novel "Dune"! -- AnonMoos (talk) 01:13, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The description of the original image (File:Sarcophages carthage 1.jpg) doesn't say anything about a "goddess", and sculptures in that position -- lying down on top of a sarcophagus -- are ordinarily interpreted as representations of the dead person... AnonMoos (talk) 02:33, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If that same statue were standing in a niche, then it could easily be a goddess depiction (for anything I know to the contrary) -- but a statue lying down on top of a sarcophagus is commonly primarily interpreted as a depiction of the dead person, and it would usually require specific evidence to arrive at a contrary conclusion. Unfortunately, you sometimes have a tendency to include boldly speculative identifications in your image titles (as when you labelled the Lady of Elche "Moon_Goddess_Tanit.jpg); it would really be better to confine such boldness to the text of the image description page, and be more conservative in your choice of image names... AnonMoos (talk) 05:54, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately that image "Christianizes" the fish depiction seen in File:Tophet Carthage.5.jpg, in a manner which both some Christians and some Neopagans would probably consider to be inappropriate... AnonMoos (talk) 03:06, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A fish in the abstract can be either pagan (Dagon or Oannes), Jewish (book of Tobit), Christian (Ichthys symbol), etc. However, when you redrew the stone inscription in File:Tophet Carthage.5.jpg you redrew the fish to to have a particular visual form which specifically resembles a common Christian symbol -- something which both some Christians and some Neopagans would probably find offensive... AnonMoos (talk) 05:47, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That file is very useful, but appears to have technical issues. I eliminated the internal "flecking", but that also eliminated background transparency. Feel free to revert... AnonMoos (talk) 22:47, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I tried to do simplified versions of the Ishtar star (see File:Ishtar-star-symbol-simplified.svg, File:Ishtar-star-symbol-simplified-filled.svg), but probably not all that successfully. User Raphael_75 then did the less simplistic versions File:Ishtar-star-symbol.svg, File:Ishtar-star-symbol-encircled.svg... AnonMoos (talk) 22:56, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There's already Category:Archaeological star glyphs (though that doesn't cover similar modern symbols). AnonMoos (talk) 02:13, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just now saw this one. If you had asked me, I could have done a simplified version of my SVG File:Iraq state emblem CoA 1959-1965 Qassem.svg which would have avoided the technical problems seen in your PNG. Meanwhile, there's a problem with the file, in that the red parts of File:Iraq state emblem CoA 1959-1965 Qassem.svg could be considered to be a form of the Star of Ishtar, but the red and yellow parts (i.e. straight and wavy rays) together would seem to form a Shamash sun symbol... AnonMoos (talk) 00:03, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Thanks for pointing out File:Victory stele of Naram Sin 9071.jpg... AnonMoos (talk) 00:10, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Put kudurru ishtar into the search form to see others (not all enclosed in a circle)... AnonMoos (talk) 02:19, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good solid useful category, but some people would probably prefer "Canaanite"... AnonMoos (talk) 00:51, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't want to be too prosaic, but it looks to me to be more of an ordinary decorative rosette than a Star of Shamash symbol... AnonMoos (talk) 06:56, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Response: User_talk:AnonMoos#Re:_File:Chorazin_Seat_of_Moses.jpg
It could be symbolic or decorative or both, but it doesn't look too much like the Star of Shamash symbol. P.S. The Star of David was chosen as a Jewish community symbol in Prague in the late middle ages apparently because it was not a traditional Jewish religious symbol (like the Menorah)... Incorrect authorship and PD claims for File:Divine couple in religion.png and other files[edit]

File:Sarcophages carthage 1.jpg is protected by copyright. However, the author has kindly allowed anyone to use it freely provided that they comply with its licensing requirements – mainly by (1) attributing the author and (2) preserve the copyright and license notices. That's not really much to ask for, but you did neither. Instead, you claimed that you were the author and copyright holder and that it's not protected by copyright. You do not become the author or copyright holder of someone else's work by cropping it, and you cannot release other people's works into the public domain.

I've corrected your claims in relation to this file. Please go through all your uploads and correct all instances of similar copyright problems. At the very least, the following need to be corrected: File:Sun with face decoration at Jewish synagogue in Chorazin.jpg, File:Chorazin Seat of Moses.jpg, File:Natib Qadish Portal Banner.gif, File:Close-Up-Without-Ceiling.jpg, File:Temple-of-Solomon-Exterior.jpg, File:Close-Up.jpg, File:Dodge Challenger (source)-2.png, File:Dodge Challenger (source).jpg, File:Van icon.png, File:Egyptianized Resheph.png, File:Anat Canaanite goddess.png, File:Punic earrings.png, File:Six-point star from Stela of Ur-Nammu.png, File:Viking statue.png, File:Sacred Mother Reborn.png, File:Carthaginian angel.png, File:Horned Altar.jpg, File:Punic sarcophagus of Goddess.png, File:Baetylus (sacred stone) on four-horse chariot.jpg, File:Baetylus (sacred stone).jpg, File:Natib Qadish Hamsa.jpg (and all other uploads clearly derived from the same source), File:Gerald Gardner (sketch).jpg (clearly someone else's photo that you just applied a filter to), File:Anton LaVey (sketch).jpg (same), and File:Bat atop Narmer Palette.jpg. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:Canaanite God El.png).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Warning sign
This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Lunar moon goddess.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Category discussion warning

Arabian mythology has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

File:Punic Birds-Head Headdress.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!
