Even if flickr says it's under CC, it's so obviously not, it qualifies to be speedied. Obviously a photo of a copyrighted TV news show. Provide a good fair use rationale, and I think the photo can stay. --Elvey (talk) 16:31, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

I have tagged this as a blatant and openly admitted copyright violation. What on earth were you thinking? How could you possibly have imagined this to be a free image, when you yourself wrote that it was copyright?! -- Zsero (talk) 17:28, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

There's clearly something screwy going on with all Mother Goose Parade photos, so I've withdrawn the copyvio tag, pending an explanation. I can guess that maybe PPMG once put a creative commons license on its Picassa pages, and then withdrew it, which they can't do. But could you please explain how "All Rights Mother Goose Parade / Popular Press Media Group (PPMG) - media@ppmg.info" is consistent with the image being free? -- Zsero (talk) 17:48, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

Mystery solved: I just received the following message from Michelle Czernin von Chudenitz <Michelle.Czernin@ppmg.info> at PPMG: "Further to our original hosting of the images, we did have it as shared use, until we discovered that there were individuals who were using the images, unattributed and moreover printing them and reselling them. After this incredibly disappointing experience, we will henceforth make all images All Rights Reserved." So it appears that after having released these images under CC-SA, they purport to have withdrawn the license, which of course they can't do. Of course future images from them will be all rights reserved.

What's confusing, though, is the information you put on these images which says "All Rights...". I suggest you change all those to remove the "All Rights" text, and instead just say "Photograph by Mother Goose Parade / Popular Press Media Group (PPMG) - media@ppmg.info", and under licensing add a note that despite what the source Picassa page now says, the photo was indeed released under a proper license. -- Zsero (talk) 18:32, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for not panicking. The photographer still holds the rights to the image, whatever they choose to license it under, and they can say that. They own it. It's theirs. If they want to say "All Rights", as they did, they can. I took that text as being part of the required attribution, and I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to split hairs and say that by removing it, you are placing us in violation. --GRuban (talk) 03:20, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

"All rights" is not part of an attribution. "In the manner specified" means how you attribute it; it doesn't mean they can require you to say things other than the attribution, especially things that contradict the very license under which they released it! For instance, they could not require you to "attribute" it by writing "I hereby admit that I owe $1M to PPMG"! -- Zsero (talk) 04:34, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

The words "All rights" do not contradict their license, and could be a perfectly fine part of an attribution. Acknowledging that they hold all rights to the picture, and could, for example, modify it without releasing their modifications (the way everyone else would have to under Share-Alike), or sell the ability to do that to others, seems like a perfectly reasonable requirement and doesn't change the fact that they also released some rights to others for free. You seem to have misread that statement as a claim reserving all rights to themselves and denying them to others, which was not stated. Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

you recommended we keep this image, due to its being published in a notable work. i would agree, if that were true. the image is NOT from the cited book. its a tracing, very crudely done, based on one of the images in the book. its nowhere near a realistic reproduction of the original work. I am going to try to have this entire set of images re-reviewed for a third time for deletion, as they are by my understanding clearly out of scope.
