More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Bardzo serdecznie proszę o pilny kontakt z biurem prasowym Stowarzyszenia Wikimedia Polska, pod adresem natalia.szafran(at)wikimedia.pl lub ewentualnie o podanie mi swojego maila na stronie dyskusji. Chodzi o publikację Twojej fotografii. Próbowałam skorzystać z mechanizmu wyślij e-mail, niestety coś nie działa. Dlatego będę bardzo wdzięczna za kontakt. CC-BY-NC icon at CC-BY-SA licensed images[edit]

Hi Abrimaal, some users at the Forum wonder why you add a CC-BY-NC icon to uploads, such as File:20150901 abc wyskoc kosciol-mk-a.jpg, which you have released under a CC-BY-SA license, which definitively allows commercial use. This may mislead or at least confuse re-users, especially as the NC-icon leaps out more easily than mere the BY-SA-license text. Legally, the CC-BY-NC is likely irrelevant, as you did add only an icon, but not a license text. Did you choose the CC-BY-NC-icon intentionally or did you just confound it with the CC-BY-SA icon? (Just to avoid any misunderstanding: it is fully o.k. to double-license uploads to Commons.) Regards. --Túrelio (talk) 09:10, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The images I publish at Wikimedia Commons are free for educational and informational purposes. Everyone may copy, share, modify them and print them for personal use. Everyone may use them in informational and educational publications that are not sold for money. However they must not be used in commercial media like books, calendars, postcards, magazines, videos without a contract between the author and the publisher. Because I could not find the template for CC-BY-SA-NC, I added the -NC icon below the main licence template. (User talk:Abrimaal)

Hi Abrimaal,

thanks for this clarification. However, then we have a problem. Per our policy COM:L, media uploaded to Commons have to be free for any kind of use (in regard to copyright; there may be other restriction, such as personality rights). I know that this is regarded as a problem by some authors. But, I cannot change it, as this is one of the pillars of Wikimedia.

This means, that you actually did not intend to license your uploads under CC-BY-SA, which allows commercial use. So far, I have identified a huge number of your uploads which carry this "template" and are therefore incompatible with our policy.

Marek, I agree with Túrelio this is confusing. All your files are released under CC-BY-SA license, so they can "be used in commercial media like books, calendars, postcards, magazines, videos without a contract between the author and the publisher", along with every other image published on Commons, please see Commons:Project_scope#Non-allowable_licence_terms. You are allowed to use dual license system where you give user choice of one license or the other license. So they can choose CC-BY-SA or CC-BY-SA-NC, but if I were commercial business I would pick CC-BY-SA. Peppering your images with non-commercial icons, is is sending mixed messages but does not make them non-commercial. --Jarekt (talk) 12:58, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A solution may be to reduce all these images to "low resolution" and transfer the originals to a photo library (say like) Alamy. The low res can remain CC-BY-SA here but for people that want the higher res they need to pay for them at Alamy. A link to the library could be given on each image as 'source' without it appearing to be blatant advertising – I think. Piszę do Ciebie, ponieważ byłeś jednym z uczestników konkursu Wiki Lubi Zabytki, a zgłoszone wtedy przez Ciebie zdjęcia stały się cenną częścią zasobów multimedialnych Wikipedii (dziękujemy!). Chciałabym dać Ci znać, że właśnie trwa nasz kolejny konkurs fotograficzny - WikiWakacje. W tym konkursie również gromadzimy zdjęcia zabytków, ale też fotografie polskiego dziedzictwa przyrodniczego i sztuki dostępnej publicznie. Podobnie jak poprzednio, wszystkie zdjęcia wzbogacą zasoby Wikipedii. I tak jak wcześniej, mamy dla uczestników nagrody - autorzy najlepszych fotografii otrzymają wybrany przez siebie sprzęt fotograficzny i akcesoria.
