Hello, Dinkum!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Please be more careful when categorising your uploads

[edit]

Please read COM:OVERCAT to find out how to categorise your uploads. Please also verify that you are using the correct categories. I removed redundant categories from one of your uploads and also recategorised it as it was put in to either very unspecific categories or in to completely incorrect categories. You can see the changes I made to the categories here. I have had to do the same to many of your uploads: recategorising them and/or removing redundant categories. - Takeaway (talk) 10:47, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour Dinkum.

Viele Grüße nochmal --:bdk: 04:18, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One step at a time

[edit]

Hello Dinkum [2] Here I added the Category:Unidentified plants using the edit facility then saving the page. Do this for a few of your unidentified plants. But first you should add to the description where the plant was found, the date and when possible also the habitat. This will aid the identifier as well as making your photo much more useful. The changed category will not fully show for a few days while the server catches up. But send me a list of those you have fixed.Answer me below this on your this your talk page.If you send me a message on mine sign it with four of these ~ Which I have done here Notafly (talk) 13:02, 3 September 2011 (UTC) Robert[reply]

Catégorisation

[edit]

Bonjour Dinkum,

Benchaum (talk) 07:25, 8 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

hi, nice photo. the french seem to have the most restrictive copyright wrt FoP. there is another copy at the Kröller-Müller Museum. see the article here: [4]. i would suggest parking these at flikr, or upload US ones as PD no notice. Slowking4 (talk) 22:30, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Art_Project see google's faq where copyright remains in effect.[5] (i.e. there are questions of copyright) normally 70 years after the artist's death, it should be pubic domain, (or if they worked for the government (WPA)), but the galleries have a way of putting restriction on their high res scans, i.e. NC ND.
i only learned this confusing copyright stuff by hard knocks at the knee of user:Missvain (public art). the "PD no notice" is little understood, and lots of tags are wrong. since this is a us website, we could ram it to the French, but we act with a due regard for local copyright law. <shrug>. an attempt to have FoP failed in the Assemblée Nationale. [6] you could try uploading in english wikipedia as "fair use" "- ("non-free 3D art") but it's a struggle. Slowking4 (talk) 12:51, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the ? Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 10:37, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Your are right. The licence is not OK as there are five more years to go before 70 years elapsed since the artist's death. Too bad, we will have to wait.
I proposed the image for deletion.

La pierre de Pontijou

[edit]

Bonjour !

Dinkum (talk) 13:35, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Problem

[edit]

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bush_in_Western_Australia.jpg is quite an anomaly - it is near coastal sandune (ocean is in background) and the dead tree in view is not an indigenous plant - so the whole landscape is in no way representative of any of the average landscape units that could be identified (the grass in foregound looks exotic as well) - can you remember where you photographed it? locality might be the only redeemoing feature - it in no way is representative of anything traditionally understood as 'bush in western australia' - cheers SatuSuro (talk) 13:04, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SatuSuro!
I took this photo in Western Australia on the road between Kalbarri and Cervantes: George Grey Drive, Port Gregory Road, North West Coastal Highway and Indian Ocean Drive. Unfortunately I don't remember where I took the photo (probably between Kalbarri and the Pink Lake). I shouldn't have titled this photo "Bush in Western Australia" it is misleading. I took a photo of a different kind of vegetation (maybe it is not called "bush" that I don't know) which is not representative of any average landscape in WA. Now, it is true that the typical representation of the bush in Australia is most of the time something like this File:Anne Beadell Highway 2006.jpg with the red earth, the shrubs and a few gum trees. After reading your message I made a virtual trip on (parts) of the same road (Kalbarri-Cervantes) with Google Street to try to find the place where I took this photo. I didn't find the exact spot. But I saw that on this road you have the view of your typical Australian bush, but you also have the yellow grass and the dead trees as shown on my picture. And you can see that kind of landscape for kilometers. I don't know the name of the black dead trees or of the yellow grass in foreground but I can assure you there are hundreds of trees and grass spots like this to be seen on this road. If they are indeed no indigenous plants, it would be very interesting to know what they are and how come they are to be found in this part of Australia. - Regards Dinkum (talk) 13:43, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for responding - your memory is helpful. I travelled through eastern europe in 2009 and I start looking at photos 3 years later and for some photos I cannot place them - whether rumania, hungary or somewhere else... Fortunately I have not uploaded them onto the internet though.

The number of landscape types in western australia and consequently the variation of shrubs/grasses is quite complex and not easy to explain here - but your memory is very helpful - we can put an area name rather than 'western australia' as a category - which is what I was trying to clean out.. cheers thanks SatuSuro (talk) 15:03, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Paris

[edit]

Perhaps I will return to Paris next year (I know Paris well, mostly from the 1960s and 1970s but I have worked in the city on many occasions leaving time for some further exploration). This year I will be in my second favourite city Rome and perhaps Greece.Have you been to Deyrolles in Rue du Bac [9]? They allow photography to judge from flickr and there is a short Wiki page.I will make a list of desired photos when I get back from Italy (maybe July). Warm regards Robert aka Notafly (talk) 20:37, 23 May 2013 (UTC) PS. I see you too have problems with FOP All my commons photos of modern Rome are now deleted even Termini station. Also several Paris pics notably a large playful ceramic cat in Montparnasse cemetery.[10] La vie?[reply]

Le coucou, réponse

[edit]

N'hésite pas à me réécrire ! Bien à toi, --Jebulon (talk) 16:49, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

[edit]
2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Dear Dinkum,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

 • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
 • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

 1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
 2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
 3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

Demande de renommage

[edit]

Bonjour,

Je me tiens à ta disposition si tu as besoin d'aide.

Bon courage !--Jebulon (talk) 16:29, 1 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Photo-phylles 2017

[edit]

Hi Dinkum,

I just found some interesting pictures on your pages.

Probably you don't know what is Photo-phylles. It's both an international competition and a pedagogical exhibition organized by the Botanical Garden of Bordeaux, France, and the Association of botanists OÏKOS. The selected photos are shown for more than 4 months in various places and receive each year more than 5,000 visitors, for a half young people coming with their schoolmasters or teachers.

I suggest you have a look to this website http://www.jjmilan.sitew.fr/#accueil.A

We would be honoured if you accept to participate! It's completely free.
