Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

transferring source info?

Hi, when you transfer images from wikipedia to commons, is there any way of preserving the source information? You've copied over a bunch of images from en:Category:British_Columbia_public_domain_photographs but none of the original source info is in tact. How can I tell where the image came from? I'm not sure, but it seems like the source info has been removed on several images, such as File:Vancouver_Club.jpg and File:Vancouver Douglas lodge.jpg. It looks as though they came from Library and Archives Canada, and some of the categories left behind would suggest that, but I can't check because the originals have been deleted. - Themightyquill (talk) 13:19, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I have no idea. I'm no expert on this. I don't mean to be critical... it's good to transfer things here. Maybe you could speak to the owner of the bot? All of the information that was at the English Wikipedia page was transfered over. For the two images you mention, one is by Philip Timms, taken in 1905, and the other is by the Leonard Frank Studio, taken in 1945. All this info is on the page at Commons. Image transfer check problem

Re this edit of yours. You say "This bot move has been checked". Checked for what? The description and actual source are INVISIBLE. The "source" and "date" fields are completely inaccurate. The bot transfers can generate this sort of garbage and screw up image description pages; this is exactly why they need human review. Please take care of this. Please stop removing the bot move template with a claim image has been checked without actually bothering to check for things that need cleaning up. If you don't care to go to the effort of cleaning things up, that's your choice, but it seems highly inappropriate to claim they've been cleaned up when they haven't. -- Infrogmation (talk) 20:59, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am checking that all information has been transfered. Is there another problem with a file, I have transfered over 1000 files, so there may be one or 2 issues, please let me know what the issues are and I can correct them. (Off2riorob (talk) 23:42, 20 June 2009 (UTC))[reply]

The thing to check is the categories, which are often wrong. The bot attempts to guess the categories based on the description, and often guesses wrong. I cleaned up File:MissBeatnik.jpg, another which you claimed to have "checked" and removed the template from. Pretty much 100% of what was visible was flat out wrong, and the accurate information was completely invisible. Take a look at the image history. Perhaps it might be helpful if you could please explain exactly what you do when you are "checking" such images? Seriously.
