Hello, I made this gallery to organise the podcast files. (I figure it is better than a category so they can be arranged by episode.) You may wish to consider putting future files here too. cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:54, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

looks great to me! thanks! - I'll definitely put future podcasts which I upload into this format... Privatemusings 18:10, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In my view a category would be good too so they all can be found. Subcats by episode maybe? Or at least link from the Information box to the gallery... right now there's no way to find that gallery from a random .ogg file. I didn't know about the gallery and was just about to categorise them all when I decided to check here first. ++Lar: t/c 22:04, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really up to speed on cat.s and galleries etc. - but can't see any problem with having both! - I'm very happy for anyone to improve the systems in any sensible ways - and as and when I take the time and find the energy to look into it, I'll have a go myself.... the gallery isn't updated properly at the moment, really - and hopefully these issues will smooth out if the project scales up a bit, and we get some more hands on deck...! Flickr 'n me....[edit]

I got a bit excited this afternoon, and tried to install commonist, and another program which downloads entire sets from Flickr... being a sensibly minded chap, I intended to select the first 5 images from the set to upload, to make sure it all worked ok... but being a bit useless, I ended up uploading a whole bunch. Apologies to one and all for the hassles this may cause - and many thanks to Mike Lifeguard who was available to try and help sort things out :-)

It sure was a learning experience though, and I'm quite excited to get a whole bunch more images online soon-ish :-) cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 05:31, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Licensing[edit]

PLease use the {{PD-Australia}} for images that are PD in Australia, as PD images in Australia arent tied to Author plus xx years which is what {{PD-old}} says Gnangarra 09:57, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

will do - and thanks for pointing it out to me :-) best, Privatemusings (talk) 00:52, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Privatemusings!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 10:11, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry, but this is getting ridiculous[edit]

Why do you keep bringing this sexual content up? It is obvious, even for me that you are not going to win, mainly per Wikimedia Foundation policies that "We Are Not Censored". Being I am willing to state a case, you are willing driving us Commoners through the roof. Please, the truth is, if you don't want to contribute nicely, do not contribute at all. Thanks.Mitch32(Want help? See here!) 23:42, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hope it's not ridiculous at all, Mitch - I see it as pretty serious stuff - and it's stuff I've been thinking about, and involved in for quite a while. I can see that some are 'going through the roof' (or, as it was put to me elsewhere, I'm 'getting up peoples noses') - and I think the source of that frustration is that I don't accept that this issue is resolved in a sustainable fashion, and I think there's a conversation that needs to be had. Now obviously folk are free to disagree, and I very much support Lar in his 'try not to be distracted by PM' line - my intention here, and elsewhere, is just to communicate some ideas for how I think things might be improved - hopefully as politely and clearly as possible :-)
The minefield that is you, as a minor, working in this area hasn't really come up yet anywhere, though my advice to you would be to at least be circumspect in the material you review, discuss and how your role as an 'admin' is played. I accept no duty of care over you whatsoever, however I think it's troubling that nor does the community, nor the foundation. I guess the basic wisdom 'make sure your parents / responsible adults know what you're involved in' applies here as strongly as anywhere.....
I appreciate your swinging by here, and hope this has eased your concerns a little. I remain happy to chat, of course... Privatemusings (talk) 23:58, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Its not just that. You are spamming like crazy to get this done. That is the unncessary part. The point is, try not be so POINTy. It is not worth doing. There are people getting infuriated with you, and it should really stop. I am not trying to comment about the case at hand.Mitch32(Want help? See here!) 00:48, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
someone else felt I was spamming pages, over at Jimbo's talk page on en - it hasn't been my intention at all, but I recognise how annoying that is to many, and how my behaviour has veered into that territory - I apologise for any over-the-top shouting, which doesn't help in any case. I think this is calming down now, and I won't post any more notes to village pumps / user talk pages etc., except as part of current discussions, at all. cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 00:57, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cricket photos[edit]

I saw the message at WP:CRICKET and that is what led me here. All the images can be categorised at Category:Sydney Cricket Ground and Category:2009 in cricket as a basic minimum. From there it gets a little more complex, with images to be categorised by player, activity etc. Thanks for uploading them, they will be useful. Cheers, Mattinbgn/talk 02:48, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photographs of identifiable people again[edit]

I have made some changes to Commons:Photographs of identifiable people/Proposal in response to a variety of helpful suggestions that users have made on the talk page. You have already commented there; could I ask you to have a look again, and to consider whether you would like to express an opinion in the Poll towards the bottom of the page? Many thanks. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 18:33, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photos from Powerhouse Museum[edit]

Hello, please make an effort to add descriptive details to photos - what, where, when - otherwise it's not really usable for any practical purpose. regards. Rod. Rcbutcher (talk) 01:16, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Your images in Category:Tom Lennon Collection are all marked as {{PD-old}} which is not correct since Lennon died in 1992. Did you mean to tag them as {{PD-Australia}}? I was about to nominate them all for deletion. Thanks. Wknight94 talk 17:12, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

they should indeed be PD-Austrlaia, I think - the Powerhouse considers them to have 'no known copyright restrictions' - which is as firm a statement of Public Domian as it's possible to get - I'll try and work out an automated way of changing all 69 tags - but I'm not great at that sort of thing - apologies for the extra hassle, and thanks for letting me know about the problem.. Privatemusings (talk) 21:52, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, well if they're not fixed when I get home in a few hours, I'll fire up COM:AWB and fix them. Thanks. Wknight94 talk 21:56, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for being up an old topic, got to love Tom's collection but it is a pity the law in Australia was changed as it would have been great to see his Wagga collection slowly being released into the Public Domain. I have seen the Wagga Wagga collection and is great seeing what the city was and the events. CSU's BIO on Tom has mostly footage of Wagga but also some video of Sydney shot by Tom. Bidgee (talk) 14:57, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a pleasure to be reminded of these shots - I must go check to see if the Powerhouse have been able to release any more.... it is indeed a shame that the images haven't automatically become 'free' - perhaps in the fullness of time we might get the chance to discuss with the rights holder (presumably family?) some sort of release - because it clearly helps communicate his legacy in my view, and as you say, the shots are great - thanks heaps for the link, which I'll now go watch :-) cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 00:16, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Child protection?[edit]

Hey mate, I'm kinda insulted and kinda flattered that 90% of your images used in File:WikiP0rn.ogv are mine... Max Rebo Band"almost suspiciously excellent" 01:59, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

heh! - that's a co-incidence, I promise! I only had about 30mins spare to make the video, so just browsed through a few cat.s and grabbed shots fairly at random - it may be that in this area, you're one of the most active contributors, hence the large no. of images (am I right in saying that most / all of them are copied across from flickr, btw?)
In terms of 'harming children' I suspect that you and I are actually far closer on that issue than you may feel. You notice how at flickr you have to register an account, and click on a sort of age verification / family filter permission screen to be able to view such material - it's a system like that that I'm advocating - that would also allow people like school network admin.s to prohibit access to such material, because whilst I largely agree that many images don't actually harm children (with possible exceptions, but thems the dice) I think you'd also clearly understand that in most cultures at this time, providing images of people having sex to children is prohibited / illegal / not really on - one way of thinking about this is to consider what you feel the reaction would be if you printed, for example, the images from my video, and ran a workshop at a local primary school distributing such material - in effect, promoting wikimedia use in said context achieves the same end (explicit material accessed by kids) - we could explain and manage this better, in my view.
The stat.s tool shows how often explicit material pages - they're by far the most accessed pages / categories on commons, from which I infer that the context of the images (within articles, books etc.) is to a degree secondary to the desire of various folk to get their kick of tits 'n ass (and other bits, going into other places!)
Thanks heaps for coming by though Max, and I really hope you're up for a bit more of a chat on this one - I strongly support your moves to include age verification through OTRS, which is also an important step in the right direction in my view - hopefully we can have a bit of a chat here, and try and help move things forward....... cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 20:43, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at my contributions, I actually started doing primarily "vintage erotica" (though keeping away from ones of questionable age, nobody wants to be the next w:Paul Rubens) and then it seemed to me that "If today we consider it worthwhile to collect erotica from 100 years past, then in 2110, they'll likely wish we had better organised our erotica back in our current day". I strongly agree that "let me spread my labia and grab the webcam" pics are not desirable on here - the Kissing Parkers one is about the lowest-quality image I'd consider acceptable by my personal standards. Obviously Flickr has thousands of images of people taking a picture of their penis, vagina, breasts, whatever - and I'm not importing those - I'm sticking to the "best 5%" of images - some of which I was dismayed to see in your video actually. (File:Leaning on Barn Doors.png is a wonderful example of mature and artistic erotica we should have; similarly File:What a tangled web we weave.png shows no actual anatomy and is just a great way to show "sexual activity" instead of a grainy point-and-shoot of your dick going in somebody's ass). Often I "dial down" an image, either converting it to black and white (File:Reaching for Bliss.png is a good example) to make it more "artistic" (we can reasonably assume that "girls licking their own tits" is a worthwhile subject to have a decent photograph illustrating, I have no idea if there's a WP article on the phenomena or not). Again, with images like File:Karada breast bondage with heart tattoo.png I actually crop the images to remove the "naughty bits" where they're not relevant (that is an image of Karada rope bondage...seeing her nipples with black tape is unnecessary, a shoulders-up image works just as well). Anyways, I really do think that we need to at least have a voluntary age-verification system so that people can choose to submit evidence of a model's age (though they may prefer to keep exact identity secret for privacy). Similarly, if we had a hidden-categorization system that put up "explicit images", and then only displayed them to WP users who were logged in or something, again, that'd be a fine step in my mind. Hope we can continue to work together to improve the project. Max Rebo Band"almost suspiciously excellent" 21:04, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
that's a beautiful pic, btw :-) - I strongly support the steps you suggest; age verification via OTRS or somesuch, categorisation system which allows restriction to 'logged in' users (I'd add the requirement for a user to assert that viewing such material is legal in their jurisdiction - which likely means claiming to be an adult for most) - implementation of such steps would be an absolute sea-change in the way the project currently behaves around such material, and would really move things forward in my view.
Other folk also seem to support such measures, but adding your voice, as a somewhat prolific volunteer in this area, might really help. I don't consider the area you're working in to be suitable for children to engage with (as editors or readers really) but that doesn't equate to not recognising both artistic, and potential sociological / historical merit - if we can sort out some of the policy and practice, I think we'll be on the right track. Have a look at Commons:Sexual_content if you get the chance (it features the steps you've described above, though maybe can be improved!) - and also, the 'foundation-l' mailing list thread might benefit from your thoughts? hope you're good... cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 00:13, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If the OTRS people are unhappy with the idea of being asked to "judge" erotic images (as first glance seemed to suggest they were, which I hadn't even considered), then I'm certainly willing to help form some kind of "alternate" team - perhaps involving Wikiproject:Pornogrophy or something similar. With Wikimedia Foundation/Commons approval, we can have a WMF eMail address to log things...if refused, we can always set up our own wikiprojectEroticaAndPornography@hotmail.com type of address, share the password between a few people, and create a project template for images that have been reasonably "checked". I highly doubt we'd ever be looking at all explicit Commons files

having the tags - after all, think of the paintings of naked religious figures, etc - but we could make some real headway - and have an alternate template "Wikiproject:Erotica has been unable to verify the age of the subject of this photo, and reasonable good faith suggests that it may be a legal concern in countries with a minimum age for sexually explicit material. We would appreciate further attempts to contact the photographer or subject for clarification, to help avoid deletion in the future" or something of that kind. Max Rebo Band"almost suspiciously excellent" 11:58, 10 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reason explained. Sorry for the technical problem. --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 16:16, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Wikiproject[edit]

Greetings, I know we've bumped into each other in the past - especially in conversations and work surrounding "erotic works" on Commons. To help us focus and keep others abreast of what we feel needs doing in the future - I was thinking we should form a Wikiproject:Erotica. I'd invite you to sign up, and take a leading role in building the project, and helping decide on the directions we should take to ensure that Commons can host historically important, simply beautiful, or otherwise notable pieces of erotic art - without extending ourselves to the level of "encouraging usres to grab a webcam and drop their trousers". Thanks! Max Rebo Band"almost suspiciously excellent" 15:42, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for this, Max, I'm very interested in forming such a WikiProject, and sorry that I haven't been around all that much of late to start getting the ball rolling - I'll think on it a bit more, and get back to you with some starting points before too long :-) cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 22:20, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sexual Content Proposal[edit]

Thank you for your response. I read the page and made my own additions. It would be nice if the tag could be changed to "under discussion". The current tag strongly discourages further contribution.

If you take a look at my Wikipedia userpage you'll see that I'm quite active in pornography and sexuality projects there. I would consider myself to be a subject matter expert in this area. I'm interested in joining the new Erotica project. Please keep me informed. - Stillwaterising (talk) 04:21, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note, Still - I would consider it a positive and appropraite step to remove the 'rejected' tag on the proposal, but feel that it's better coming from another editor, rather than me :-) The Erotica project is probably a good home for some sensible 'descriptive image tagging' - although we need a bit of energising - I'll roll my sleeves up when I get a wee bit more time, and hope to see you around :-) best, Privatemusings (talk) 04:59, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've heard of this WikiProject but I could not fint it on Wp. Is it a common's only group? What is their homepage? You can look on my Wp userpage and see what projects I've joined there. - Stillwaterising (talk) 08:02, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
yeah - it's a commons only project, and it's very much in its infancy (as in, its barely off the ground really :-) - how are you feeling about the whole issue given the nature of the debates / threads around this place? cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 01:07, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Very frustrated. I would like to comment more, but not right now. -- Stillwaterising (talk) 04:09, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
hang in there, Still - I strongly support the efforts you've made (for what that's worth), and I hope you're up for making changes over the long haul... it'll come out in the wash. Meanwhile, do feel free to swing by any time or flick me an email if you need a hand with anything.... cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 06:27, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I could really use your help at this point. I had some personal issues and was unable to keep up with the discussion, now User:Thryduulf and the very annoying and banned from home wiki user Roux as trying to kill the proposal while still under development. - Stillwaterising (talk) 11:04, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

sorry to hear of your personal hassles, Still - hope they're settling now - and I'll try and make some replies / comments around and about the place shortly.... Privatemusings (talk) 23:42, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I should comment here that all proposals for content filtering/marking systems that have been proposed on a Wikimedia project have been soundly rejected by the community. There is firm consensus that there is no need for any proposal to deal with the "problems" (that have never been shown to actually exist) of sexual content. This means that no matter what it's state of development, the present proposal will be rejected. Thryduulf (talk) 12:27, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
heh... don't think I agree with you entirely, Thry ;-) - if you think about it, wouldn't what you're saying negate any possibility of change at all in any wiki area? - I've got more hope than that :-) cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 23:42, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Has this proposal ever been announced as ready for approval on Village Pump? It would seem to me that it has been rejected by the same dozen or so editors without any widespread input. - Stillwaterising (talk) 15:18, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Expanding in the left menu[edit]

Hello Privatemusings, To switch of the collapsing parts in the left menu, you can go to your preferences, second tab, last option. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 12:19, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion discussion[edit]

Sorry, but File:Explicit wmf.OGG still seems squarely within existing deletion criteria to me (without invoking anything from the proposed policy on sexual content), and I've so nominated it. Wnt (talk) 14:49, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

no worries - I obviously hope it's not deleted, and will present my thoughts / points early next week - but I don't take it personally or anything :-) cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 06:13, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Copy-edit to COM:SEX[edit]

I did a pretty major copy-edit to the proposal. Can you give the current version a once over to check that it's still all intact. No major policy changes or info removed, but a lot of shuffling, and I want to make sure nothing got lost. Thanks, Ocaasi Ocaasi (talk) 05:34, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Content without explicit consent[edit]

Some discussion about your edit. Would you chime in? Ocaasi (talk) 08:33, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I certainly will, but not until tomorrow - sorry! - it's sunday afternoon for me right now, and I'm not really here :-) cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 05:06, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
File:Three_masted_Navy_vessel_in_dry_dock.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
