Australian Harriers[edit]

Hi There Toter, If you can let me know your email address I will post you some more images, I can assure you they are what I've uploaded them as. Swamp Harrier is frequently lacking a white-rump and I can assure you that the bird in the image is a Spotted Harrier, this is an adult (juveniles are light-brown) Unfortunately I'm not sure that either species can easily be sexed apart from size difference, if you know better I would love to find out. cheers, Aviceda (talk) 09:33, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

I have made you a category at Category:Aepfel und Birnen, 1894 for your pictures of this book. This will help to keep them together. Thanks for uploading these! − Inductiveload (talk) 19:20, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much! :D Toter Alter Mann (talk) 19:21, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem :-) Remember, you can create categories yourself, just like any other page - just add the category tag to an image and follow the red link to place that category in another, higher, category. And then you can categorize a whole load of images at once. For example in Cat:Aepfel und Birnen, 1894, all these images are already under Cat:Rudolf Goethe, Cat:Drawings of fruit and Cat:1894 books, so these don't need to be added to the image pages. This allows all the images to be treated together! In future all images can be added to Cat:Published in Berlin (?perhaps?) with just one edit, by adding that category to Cat:Aepfel und Birnen, 1894! Forestryimages uploads[edit]

Hi Toter Alter Mann - in case you want to upload more of these, there is a template you can use for these: xxxxxxx, where xxxxxxx is the image number e.g. 1349013; place this in the upload form at "|Source:". The correct license to use is . Also when adding images, it is best first to edit out or crop off the UGA watermark at the bottom right of the image to agree with Common's policy on watermarks. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 00:10, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh thank you, I didn't know about that.--Toter Alter Mann (talk) 07:20, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Toter Alter Mann; I wonder if you might be kind enough to cite a source or sources for your Circus hudsonius edits? Thank you, Walter Siegmund (talk) 16:10, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Walter; Circus cyaneus (Hen Harrier) has recently been split into two taxa, granting Circus cyaneus hudsonius of North America species status. See for example Robert E. Simmons (2000): Harriers of the World or the recent edition of Ferguson-Lee's and Christie's Raptors of the World (2009). Regards, Toter Alter Mann (talk) 16:14, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Toter Alter Mann; Thank you. I notice that you've edited the Kornweihe article.[1] That article does not yet mention the new taxonomy nor does an article exist yet for the new taxon on dewiki. Since the purpose of categories on Commons to allow users to find media, it may be helpful to wait for a new taxon to be adopted by at least one major project before adding it to Commons, rather than the other way about.[2] Thank you, Walter Siegmund (talk) 19:52, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Files you uploaded may be deleted[edit]

The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have not sent the permission, please send it to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. If you have, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard, quoting the file name, so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Could you please explain...[edit]

Could you please explain why you are nominating images for deletion but failing to follow the obligation laid out in our deletion policies that you advise the uploaders of your nominations?

Step number 3 of the instructions instantiated when yyou placed the deletion template on File:A bounty leaflect prepared by the USA for use in Afghanistan (front) -c.jpg explicitly said: Notify the item's uploader or the creator of the page by placing the following code on the user's talk page: ~~~~.

Please understand that our decisions are supposed to be made following an INFORMED discussion. Choosing to disclude those who are likely to disagree with you from a discussion very seriously undermines the goal of reaching decisions through INFORMED discussion. If you ever think about nominating another image for deletion, I urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to make sure you honor all your obligations. Geo Swan (talk) 10:04, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I can, and the explanation is very simple. I am not familiar with Commons' deletion policies and I find them highly confusing. It's not that I don't care about rules or the interests of other users, but a one and a half pages template filled with instructions in different fonts, font sizes and colors rather irritates than helps me. Even more so when I switch between German Wikipedia discussions and Commons pages, like I did when I set the deletion request. I'll keep in mind informing the uploader in the future, but a request without bold, caps and italics and a less urgent undertone would have served your purpose at well. Not all of us are frequent Commons users, and as much as we appreciate this institution, we do not instantly understand all of its rules and guidelines nor are we familiar with them. Not informing you was in no way a singn of disrespect for your efforts, it was a mere case of a lack of knowledge about the rules. I hope you don't take it personally, it was never ment that way. Best Regards, Toter Alter Mann (talk) 10:26, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Explanation accepted.
I contribute some controversial material, and this has attracted far more than my share of sockpuppets, wikistalkers, and POV-pushers. These individuals routinely disclude me when they nominate material I uploaded. In my first years of contributing I used to have challengers assume I was a woman, and address put-downs to me, based on this assumption about my gender. I haven't consciously chosen to use a different tone, but I no longer get put-downs based on the assumption I am a woman.
About making our procedures easier -- I am of two minds. Some things should be easier, because they require repetitive and time-consuming tasks that are error-prone for humans, and perfectly suited for computers. Other things however are more error prone when computers aids are used to make them simpler. There are robot aided editing tools, and some of them make certain kinds of edits far to easy to use, as evidenced by good-faith but careless users introduce lots of errors.
I think it would be possible to have the instantiation of deletion templates automatically inform the uploader or article creator that the image had been nominated for deletion. But it could be argued that this is really a task that should be done by a human being -- because sometimes the initiater simply created a redirect, and it was the second contributor who actually started the article, and in those instances the second contributor should get a heads-up.
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 11:51, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Toter Alter Mann!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I restored the older version of February 25 as this version was already in use by several images - impossible to add/change to a more restrictive license (from NC to NC-ND). It's only possible to change to a less restrictive license if already in use to license images. --Denniss (talk)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Credit Pacific Rat Photo[edit]

Hi, my father and I are writing a book on the ethnography of Easter Island and we'd like to use the image of the Pacific Rat that is found here in Wikimedia Commons. We would like to credit it with a complete name rather than a user name. The author of the image is now written as "Cliff" but you appear as the source in the history of the file section. Can you help us with this at all? Thanks and bestest to you, Alexandra Edwards

Hello Alexandra, that sounds like a great enterprise :) I took the photo from flickr, where the author also only calls himself cliff. He however lists some books he has authored under the name Carl Clifford. I hope that helps.--Toter Alter Mann (talk) 15:00, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Sirex juvencus female.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Small correction request[edit]

Hi Toter Alter Mann - in File:Nucifraga columbiana distribution.de.svg, you have the position of Cerro Potosí slightly inaccurate, the map shows it on low ground just to the east of where it is. Cerro Potosí is the highest mountain (~3715 m) in NE Mexico, so the green mark should be placed directly on the dark brown spot slightly to the left (Nucifraga columbiana occurs close to the summit, in the endemic Pinus culminicola woods there). Danke! - MPF (talk) 23:15, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and there should also be a small spot mapped for the Black Hills (South Dakota; the brown spot just east of the main range of the species, at 44°N 104°W) - MPF (talk) 23:22, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the notice; I guess that's an effect of the different projections – I'll correct it as soon as I find the time.--Toter Alter Mann (talk) 08:06, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'd do it myself except I can't edit .svg files. - MPF (talk) 09:33, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:Schreibwettbewerb März 2018 Preise.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Schreibwettbewerb März 2018 Preise.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Update request[edit]

Hello.

Can you add South Sudan in these files you uploaded:

File:Circus ranivorus distribution.png
File:Distribution Macheiramphus alcinus.PNG
File:Distribution Macheiramphus alcinus subspecies.PNG
File:Cenococcum distribution.PNG
File:Sirex noctilio distribution.PNG
File:Sypheotides indica distribution.PNG

I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files on 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 670 maps, but there is a long way to go.

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps and complicated PNG maps myself, that is why I asked you.

Kindest regards.

Maphobbyist (talk) 00:10, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can you update these files, when you have the time, over an extended period? Thank you. Maphobbyist (talk) 23:22, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
For Christ's sake, some of these maps are seven years old. So far the people of South Sudan haven't complained. I currently have working days of 10 h and only THEN do I get to do my Wikipedia stuff. I use Commons as an image repository, not as a community in itself. I have two more deadlines this month, both of which are probably more important than updating ancient maps. Besides, I'm not any wiser than you when it comes to png, it's not that I knew some clever trick or that I'd be keen on investing my time in coming up with one.
Long story short, I read your message; I probably could update them; but your impatience makes me very relucrant to do so. I have enough people dumping work on my lap as is and your mail just cost me valuable 20 mins of early morning snoozing time plus another 15 for typing this rude reply on my phone. If it's that important, please ask someone else to do it. I'm not eager to have my second Wikipedia burnout, so I'll be cancelling any notification on commons; I'll check back here when ever I feel like it. Sorry for the rant, but this kind of work order coupled with impatience is the last thing I need in my life, especially if it comes in the form of a mail I read when I check the time on my phone to see whether I still have 5 mins in bed.---Toter Alter Mann (talk) 04:48, 29 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to hear that. Thank you for the reply. I will move on with the request to other users who might be interested. Kindest regards. Maphobbyist (talk) 05:26, 29 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

(See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

Wiki Loves Earth 2024 - Deutschland[edit]

Hallo Toter Alter Mann,
