Thank you for those language maps: they look real handy! just a note: the map for German-speaking Europe is ignoring considerable native German speaking minorities in South Tyrol, Alsace and Transylvania (Central Romania)! Best - 70.149.112.96 06:25, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Sétif Algérie.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Some remarks[edit]

 1. Could you translate for me the following sentence into Swedish: The Wikimedia Atlas of the World is an organized and commented collection of geographical, political and historical maps available in Wikimedia Commons. . I will add this to the page Atlas.
 2. When you add languages to entries in the atlas, could you please use ==== in stead of ==. When a language is neither English or native/official language, I add the text in that language in a separate section starting with ====Other languages====, like in the Atlas of Azerbaijan.
 3. BTW, you might be interested to sign up as a participant in the Commons:WikiProject Atlas.

Electionworld 06:35, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! Just a question about "other languages", how many per cent of Azerbaijan's population speak English? English would absolutely be listed under other languages I dislike when English is somehow regarded as "superior". (I admit it is very useful to have English as the common language here on commons though) There are many Azerbadjanis speaking Russian as a second language and Azerbadjan since the Soviet era. Azerbadjan is also a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States whose working language is Russian. Aaker 21:46, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I do not consider English as the superiour languages (I am not a native English speaker), but it used as the common language at the atlas. I think the rerasons you give for adding Russian is exactly the reason to add it under Other languages. So at the end, I think we agree. Electionworld 10:50, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

--S23678 (talk) 17:49, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

articles are kept in the native language while categories are in English. The native tongue of Strasbourg is Alsatian and French. In that case we will have to have a double-naming, see New Zealand / Aotearoa for example. cordialement Gryffindor (talk) 19:11, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Aaker!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

RE: File:Knowledge of German EU map.svg[edit]

Hi there. All the data on that map is taken from File:Knowledge of German EU map.png. I do not know the source of the data for this map, so yeah, there is certainly a chance it isn't accurate. Also, it seems to contradict the data on File:Knowledge German EU map.png

From your post: "First, Lithuania and Latvia have both much higher percentages of German speakers, than indicated by the map. Second, the source doesn't provide any data for Bosnia-Herzegovina or Switzerland so these should be deleted. The Swiss data is also wrong because most people are not able to communicate in German in the French speaking and Italian speaking parts."

What is your source for this data? If you can show me what the percentages are based on a reliable source then I'll certainly change the map accordingly. Judging by the fact that it was uploaded by you, should I assume that you are referring to this? Judging by the note in the file description of File:Knowledge German EU map.png, the data for Switzerland seems to be taken from http://www.isw.unibe.ch/lenya/isw/live/forschung/projekt/sprachkompetenzen/Haeufigste_Fremdsprachen.pdf, but the link itself is dead, so I can't check it (I'll check tomorrow to see if it's available on any of the web archives). Anyway, if you can point me to some precise and accurate data or I find some myself, I'll be sure to change it.

Thanks for uploading File:LatinUnion.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

File:Castellano lengua oficial.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Deutsch-Français.png seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

العربية  Deutsch  English  español  français  日本語  മലയാളം  polski  português  slovenščina  svenska  Tiếng Việt  简体中文  繁體中文  +/−

The reason given by the user who added this tag is: Seems to be based on File:BlankEurope.png which is GFDL/CC-BY-SA, but this is tagged as public domain.
