Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Pay attention to licensing

Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. File:Jan Matulka - Hopi Snake Dance 2.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file. If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

Flickr2Commons

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). Elisfkc (talk) 17:50, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

I would love to use that tool @Elisfkc: , but it does not work for me. I have authorized it, but it keeps throwing errors, freezing, and/or asking for reauthorization. I just assumed it was broken. Cropping images

By way of information for the future, when you want to crop an image, as you did with File:Batophora.jpg I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops, like this one, you should upload the cropped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. CropTool only seems to function on commons images and not on the language wikis, so I suggest that any freely licensed images should be moved here first and then cropped. Cheers Ww2censor (talk) 08:58, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Вікі любить пам'ятки 2022 в Україні / Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Ukraine

Привіт!

Цього року українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки» пройде з 1 по 31 жовтня — через російське вторгнення в Україну також довелося змінити умови: тільки світлини зроблені до 23 лютого 2022 року включно будуть прийматися в основній частині конкурсу.

В Україні цей конкурс пройде вже водинадцяте. На конкурс можна подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше можна прочитати за посиланням.

Радимо ознайомитися із детальними правилами, а також із відповідями на часті питання. Як і того року — у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» можна отримати 21 бал за фотографії об'єктів, якщо світлин цієї пам'ятки раніше не було завантажено.

Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Цього року знову пройде спецномінація «Відео» — для участі робіт у цій спецномінації не потрібно обирати нічого у Завантажувачі — роботи зараховуватимуться автоматично з відповідних списків.

З 1 по 31 жовтня буде проходити українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки», метою якого є фотографування пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України. Зі списками пам'яток можна ознайомитися тут.

Окрім основних номінацій у конкурсі є вісім спеціальних номінацій: «Відео», «Війна руйнує пам'ятки», «Елементи екстер'єру», «Єврейська спадщина», «Інтер'єри», «Німецька спадщина», «Фотоплівка» та «Визначні місця Харкова».10:19, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

З 1 по 31 жовтня буде проходити українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки», метою якого є фотографування пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України. Зі списками пам'яток можна ознайомитися тут.

Окрім основних номінацій у конкурсі є вісім спеціальних номінацій: «Відео», «Війна руйнує пам'ятки», «Елементи екстер'єру», «Єврейська спадщина», «Інтер'єри», «Німецька спадщина», «Фотоплівка» та «Визначні місця Харкова».

Важливо! Через російське вторгнення в Україну також довелося змінити умови: у більшості випадків тільки роботи зняті до 30 червня 2023 року включно будуть прийматися на конкурс.

Конкурс наукових зображень 2023: Подавайте свої зображення та вигравайте призи

Вітаю! Розпочалася українська частина міжнародного Конкурсу наукових зображень 2023.

Ви брали участь в українських наукових фотоконкурсах раніше, тож, сподіваємося, вас зацікавить і цей. Подавати зображення можна у п’яти категоріях: «Люди в науці», «Мікроскопія», «Живі організми», «Загальна категорія», «Нефотографічні зображення». Також є спеціальна відзнака для зображень, які показують наслідки російського вторгнення в Україну. Конкурс триватиме до 20 грудня.

Якщо у вас є релевантні зображення в архіві — наприклад, світлини науковців за роботою чи фото з наукових експедицій — саме час розібрати їх, подати на конкурс і поборотися за цінні призи на українському та міжнародному рівні. Своєю участю ви також допоможете проілюструвати Вікіпедію — найбільшу онлайн-енциклопедію, яку читають мільйони людей.

Якщо ви маєте багато досвіду участі в конкурсі у минулі роки, зверніть увагу на новий ресурс — підбірка порад для учасників та учасниць конкурсу від журі. Якщо ж хотіли б згадати, як подавати роботи на конкурс, запрошуємо долучитися до вебінару 21 листопада о 19:30; реєструйтеся у Google-формі за посиланням (навіть якщо не зможете долучитися онлайн у цей час, ми надішлемо корисні відеоматеріали зареєстрованим учасникам та учасницям).
