Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines

Hi Thuresson

I have received this alert:

Thanks for uploading Image:AURORE_les_fantômes_du_chapelier.jpg. This image is missing permission information. That is what I am trying to do. This picture is under the copyright of "Collection Christophe L. : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christophe_L" . It is a huge database of film pictures with NO other copyright needed than his name. I had written under the picture (c) Collection Christophe L., but it seems that you require more.

I have copied the link I need to create, but don't know how to do it. Can you help????

Thanks for uploading Image:Aurore10.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. [edit]

To answer your question, I'll first give a little background - here on Commons, we frequently have to deal with random, anonymous Internet users uploading pictures of celebrities that they've found on websites, without paying any attention to copyright. Tools such as the OTRS system have been developed to help distinguish legitimate uploads from these copyright violations. Basically, for an image to be on Commons, we need evidence that the copyright holder (if different from the uploader) has agreed to release it under a free license.

More specific details about some of your images:

 • Image:AURORE CLEMENT.jpg - you originally described this as being from your "personal archives"; most often, when someone makes this claim, they're merely stating that they own the photo, not that they created it, and in such cases they don't own the copyright. As you've now re-uploaded it with the clearer claim of "own work", it should be okay.
 • Image:Robert-rimbaud_2.jpg - you say that Brigitte Enguérand is the copyright holder and has given permission. This is where OTRS is used - ideally, Enguérand should send an e-mail explaining how she is the copyright holder (on the image page you only gave Jean-Claude Missiaen's name), and that she agrees to publish it under the Copyrighted free use license (or another free license ). If that's a problem, you could try emailing a full explanation to OTRS yourself, to work it out. Once the license is confirmed by OTRS, the image can be undeleted and marked with the necessary information.
 • Image:Pierre Dmitrienko.JPG - use OTRS for this image also, to confirm Christiane Lénier's permission; without that another admin will delete it soon (but it can always be undeleted if things are cleared up later).
 • Image:Aurore10.jpg - this image currently has no information on who created it; please edit the page to add that information (and again use OTRS if you aren't the photographer)
 • Image:Dmitrieno Espagne 1959.jpg - Dmitrienko's heirs would own the copyright to his painting; we'd need their permission to host a photograph of it.

For any other photos you've uploaded that you didn't create yourself, the licensing will need to be confirmed as with the above ones.

Finally, as an side note, you should consider editing your user page (User:Menerbes) to provide some information about yourself and your activities here & on the French wikipedia. Not that you have to give your full name or the like, if you don't want, but some basic information such as you stated on my talk page would help show that you're working in "good faith" (as they call it on wikipedia), and would make the regulars here less suspicious of your uploads. --dave pape (talk) 18:31, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Photos again+ Question

[edit]

Hello When I upload photos which are my own work, I always choose the licence GFDL + CC-BY-SA (because it says that it is recommended). I have forgotten to send an email to permissions@... But recently did it, after seing that my photos had been deleted. You say that you never can be sure that the person who says that he/she is the copyright holder IS in fact the copyright holder.. So what can be done?

What I would know is: why does it sometimes work and not always? When I have uploaded the photo of actress Aurore Clement (Aurore Clement), I have asked her to confirm that the picture was my own work, and whe received a "ticket" saying that it was ok. But for the picture Fabian3.jpg in the page (Fabian Gastellier) which has been taken by my godson (because I am Fabian Gastellier), he sent an email to permissions... and received the same answer we always receive (sent by different people). it says:

As this image is hosted on Wikimedia Commons, it requires the owner of the image to provide a specific release of the image under a suitably free license (such as certain Creative Commons licenses or the GFDL). If you do this, then your content may be used on Wikipedia. I'm afraid that "permission to use on Wikipedia" is not adequate enough.

I have never written "only" "permission to use on Wikipedia"... And always used the GFDL licence.

My godson just sent an email confirming that he was the copyright holder and granted me permission to publish the photo.

And when you ask to provide a link, how can I do that when the photos come from my albums?? Also, I cannot ask deceased persons (some are) to send you the confirmation Ms Clement sent! Please help me, I am LOST!!!!

Sincerely, User Talk MenerbesMenerbes (talk) 10:46, 21 August 2008 (UTC)12h35[reply]

Thank you for sharing the precious and historical 1976 picture of the Ring cycle. Image:Gwyneth Chéreau.jpg. Is the scene from Götterdämmerung? --Caspian blue (talk) 17:32, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again

[edit]

Dear Caspian blue,

Yes, this picture takes place in the last "journey" in the wagnerian Ring: Götterdämmerung. I don't recall when exactly. I have taken so many...And it is more than 30 years ago... These were rehersals, and the man whose back we can only see is Patrice Chereau. People behind are "friends" who were either friends of some singers/director/conductor.

But you can find (if you like Wagner or this event) a website I just discovered today: http://www.wagneroperas.com/index1976ring.html

You should buy the DVD's. It was an historic experience and, perhaps do you know that, in 1980 --last "Ring"--, Patrice Chereau has expressely asked that everything from his scenography should be destroyed. As I was (again!) there, I do have Gwyneth Jones' helmet in the "Die Walküre" (thanks to her!!)... It was more hectic than an auction sale in NY Christie... 100 persons who wanted the sames things!!!

Have a good day User Talk: MenerbesMenerbes (talk) 18:04, 22 August 2008 (UTC)7:50 p.m[reply]

Excellent! You had really a wonderful time at Bayreuth. Wow, I wish I go there to attend the festival in future. Yes, I have the DVD set, but I just watched the first 3 music dramas because the last piece is pretty long. :) I love Wagner's music and Patrice Chéreau's production. You have Jone's helmet! Thanks again for sharing your photos and the information about the site. Keep up the good work!

Best regards. --Caspian blue (talk) 19:19, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jones' Helmet

[edit]

Hello Caspian blue,

I have to tell you that, because of the cut on the budget, the helmet (and all the swords etc.) is in plastic ! This is less romantic, hey? Well, that's theatre magic...

Let me share with you a "souvenir".. When I was waiting for Jones, backstage (during the first performance --no more on rehersals), I was with some friends and we all heard a beautiful voice with a strange sound, singing Wagner. Then someone said: "well, somebody must hear an early Walküre (meaning old LP's).... Then we saw Jeanine Altmeyer (Sieglinde) coming out of the shower!.... What we heard was her beautiful voice and the sound of the water coming out from the shower. LOL!

Good night,

Hi, Menerbes. Good to see you again. I'm afraid I don' know hot to solve the problem because I've never done to ask a permission from famous people's family. He WAS god to me....too, so I understand his daughter's opinion. Is the photo that you want to get a permission from her for a purpose to use in Wikipedia or others? If your request is lied in the first case, we can use it as a fair use image since he was deceased. But as for the latter case, well, I don't know what solution might be. Sorry that I can't give you a helpful opinion. Best. --Caspian blue (talk) 21:29, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, Menerbes!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Catégories et images ??

Bonjour. How to add a category

[edit]

Hi Menerbes! Sorry - I do not understand French so this will be in English.

 • "BotMultichillT" is a bot so it will not respond to what you say.
 • When you write on your own talkpage probably only af few or none will see what you write. So if you need help it is better to look at the links on the top of your userpage (see under "Getting help").
 • Adding categories can be done by adding "" at the bottom of the imagepage (one per line). To see how it is done you could click File:TerraformedMarsGlobeRealistic.jpg and click edit.

Hope it can help you a little :-) --MGA73 (talk) 14:11, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:BérangèreB.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:BérangèreB.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Cordialement MenerbesMenerbes (talk) 19:50, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
