Hello, Tagishsimon!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Please, we're not writing an encyclopedia. File descriptions should be a few sentences or a paragraph at most. If more information is required, simply link to the relevant Wikipedia article, or another source.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 21:13, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please help replace this outdated license[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

Hello Tagishsimon,
I've stumbled over your uploaded Image finding the tag "Uncategorized|year=2012|month=March|day=14".
So I've added some text and some categories ...

 • Category:Old maps of London
 • Category:Theatres in London
 • Category:Shakespearean theatre

... and removed the tag.
Hope the last 2 categories will not be seen as "Over-categorization"; I think, they're appropriate here as the map is showing a nice overview of historic shakespearean theatres.

Category discussion warning

Newcastle upon Tyne has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Only land map[edit]

Hello. Many thanks for File:Larnaca - OpenStreetMap.png. Can I ask you one more thing? I need the same map with just the land. Nothing else. For example in File:Cyprus adm (–1960) location map.svg you can see only the land. Can we do that for Larnaca area? If yes, can you explain me how? Xaris333 (talk) 19:09, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Short answer: don't know, Xaris333. I had a look around but have not yet found an open-source map provider offering this; I suspect it might be a job for a grahics specialist ... which is not me. I'm just a stealer of other people's maps. That said, I may have a go and if I do I'll come back to you. --Tagishsimon (talk) 16:25, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Cyprus[edit]

Hello. In this site [2] you can see a political map of Cyprus with all municipalities and all villages. Can you use it to create the same map for Commons? Xaris333 (talk) 20:46, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot; sorry @Xaris333: . The map on the site is as far as I can deduce copyrighted & unavailable under a free licence. I have not the skills to transfer the information in the map toa free map. :( --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:38, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading File:Prospect Reservoir Valve House.jpg to the Wikimedia Commons. I noticed that when you uploaded from another Wikimedia project, you left out some important information, or copied it incorrectly. In the future, please consider using CommonsHelper, a tool which automates the process of moving files over. Thank you,

BHL & Commons[edit]

@Tagishsimon: I have been working through the myriad images at Category:The_botany_of_the_Antarctic_voyage_of_H.M._discovery_ships_Erebus_and_Terror_in_the_Years_1839-1843(all 263 images), most of which are not categorised any further. However, when they are, as in for example, Category:Anisotome_antipoda, you can see that the image has been uploaded to commons four times, which is not surprising, because having been uploaded uncategorised, people cannot find them and finding the image, upload them again, only to discover they have already been uploaded. What is unfortunate is that the work people have already done in tagging these images on Flickr, does not upload to the commons... See Flickr.

A solution would be to recognise that the photos in a flickr album (Flickr album) match the photos in the commons category and then to pick up from each photo in the Flickr album (Flickr:Anisotome antipoda) its flickr tag:"taxonomy:binomial=Anisotome antipoda" and associate it with the Flickr downloaded biodiversity item using the structured data item "depicts". There are currently many million biodiversity scientific illustrations which have been uploaded to commons. It would be great to be able to find them easily.

I thought that you might be the person who could make this happen.. Or that you might know someone who can. Cheers, and again thanks for all your help. MargaretRDonald (talk) 19:59, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Larry Philpot?[edit]

Hi there,

I read the story about Larry Philpot in Bloomberg and was surprised to see his images were still on wikimedia. I saw that you initiated the block and deletion request of his account in 2019. Do you know why his photos are still here? Is there anything that can be done to remove them? I don't know a lot about the inner workings of the commons but it seems dangerous to keep them around, given his history. --Friendship hurricane (talk) 19:55, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:The UK s Approach to NI Protocol Web Accessible.pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Battleship[edit]

I didn't realize I had listed that battleship as my work. You see, I was using it for a user box but the original public domain image was too large. Sorry for any confusion, i'll proceed to attempt to aid in its deletion and the deletion of the before mentioned userbox. Hope your well. Skullovitch (talk) 16:16, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Winnie the Pooh copyvio claims[edit]

Hi. Can you please revert your recent swathe of copyvio claims on last year's Winnie the Pooh images? We had a lengthy discussion on this at Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Works by Ernest Howard Shepard. If you disagree with the result, it will need a new discussion rather than a speedy deletion. From Hill To Shore (talk) 01:10, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have contested your speedy deletion of these files and opened a normal deletion process. As we found with the 1926 Winnie The Pooh work, the publication dates were so close in the UK and US that the Commons community deemed it appropriate to apply the simultaneous publication principle and Keep the files. We need to complete a similar investigation here on publication dates and locations to allow the community to form a new consensus for this other work. I don't expect work by this artist to all be kept or all deleted; we need to review the circumstances of each published work in isolation.
