Crystal Clear app korganizer.png First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Categories that do not exist[edit]

Hi! I cannot see any good reason for adding not-existing categories to the .gif files in category:Future solar eclipses. Categories can be made when these eclipses actually occur, and photos become available. There is plenty of time for that. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 06:38, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

I don't see any harm, and good advantage, since the singular category uploads tons of animated gifs which is confusing to find specific events and slow to view! Plus there's multiple types of pre-event charts for each eclipse event, so can be valuable to connect them together. I actually was lazy, uploaded to en.wiki, so currently only the gifs were moved to commons. Tomruen (talk) 03:04, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Happy to see you here[edit]

Hi Tomruen, you popped up on my list. I plan on moving your uploads to Commons later this week. I created subcats of Category:Polytopes to match the enwp category en:Category:Polytopes. Do you think this is enough? Multichill (talk) 21:31, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes, the subcats are good! Thanks! Tomruen (talk) 21:38, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

renaming files[edit]

Hi Tomruen.

If you need to rename a file, (like this one) please use rename (eg. like this: better file name instead of uploading a duplicate. Thanks, Amada44  talk to me 08:01, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks that sounds better! Tomruen (talk) 20:53, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

GJ 581 orbits[edit]

Hey, thanks for proving that the file format for exoplanet orbit diagrams is sufficiently comprehensible that other people can edit them. If you've got any suggestions for how to make them better and more easily editable, it'd be good to hear them. Cheers, Icalanise (talk) 23:24, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Glad I could try, just embarressed to hack mixed-data! Seriously, great stuff - I've never seen a documented SVG file! :) I've just begin playing around with the format, simplest of things, points and lines. I'll probably steal some coding from your examples! So just keep up the comments! Tomruen (talk) 01:55, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Don't worry about the mixed data thing, I've seen this done several times (usually in the case of the Mu Arae system) in actual refereed scientific papers by authors who you would think would know better. In fact the Extrasolar Planet Encyclopaedia's data for the Gliese 581 system [1] is mixed data. Funnily enough the EPE had mixed data for Mu Arae for quite a while too... Icalanise (talk) 20:42, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Please use the correct date format[edit]

Hi Tomruen,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed you mentioned a date on File:3 21 t2 A6.svg. Please know that in order for dates to be automatically detected and translated into other languages it needs to be in the YYYY-MM-DD format (ie. 2014-01 for or 2014-07-10 for ). Also, for other (less specific) dates use Other date for centuries, ranges, 'circa' etc. like this: between for "between and ". This way the dates will be translated internally into the user's language preference. I've fixed it for you here. See for example the result in English: here. Thanks again. –Krinkletalk 01:37, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Author field[edit]

Hi Self, Please use the Author-field for what it's intended for: The Author's (nick)name. I fixed an example here. Thanks,

deletion requests[edit]

Hi Tomruen,
you did not provide a rationale/reason why you want File:120-cell t0 B4.svg and File:600-cell t0 B4.svg to be deleted. --Túrelio (talk) 13:29, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Sorry. I uploaded them, and thought I could judge them without a reason. The B4 Coxeter plane has order-8 symmetry, while the B4 projection of the 120-cell/600-cells (H4 Coxeter group) have only order 4-symmetry, so its not a legitimate subgroup of H4. So in uploading new images of the other H4 family polytopes, I decided it was better to leave it off the articles. OTOH, the graphs are "correct" projections, so as you like. Tip: Categorizing images[edit]

Hello, Tomruen!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Licenses[edit]

Hi Tom, I noticed that a number of images you've uploaded recently have been licensed with the PD template, which can no longer be used since it is ambiguous. If you would, please go back and change them to PD-self if you made them or some other appropriate license, otherwise, they may be deleted. I cannot do this since they were uploaded (and I assume created) by you and must be explicitly released by yourself. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to leave a note on my talk page. Thanks! Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

File:9-4 dipyramid.png[edit]

Hi Tom, the following pages are leaking a copyright tag (e.g. ). Just tell me what you think is appropriate and I'll insert it for you. Kind regards Rillke(q?) 11:39, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Also it would be kind if you could use standard date format (YYYY-MM-DD) and insert permission templates into the |permission= parameter (and not "yes", because this isn't realistically useful). Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 11:45, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

I'm sorry for the trouble. Thanks for helping. I'm a long time editor, but still confused what is needed. I generated the images from software I purchased, and included the attribution in kindness to the author. Its the same source as File:Hexahedron.png, so I thought Stella image would be sufficient. I'll try to do the currect date format in the future. Tomruen (talk) 18:39, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
My fault. The problem was this vandalism which I didn't expect. I regret the confusion. Thank you for your contributions to Commons. Please feel welcome. If you have a question, don't hesitate to ask me. Best regards -- Rillke(q?) 20:16, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Puzzled by this change and conjecturing that you meant to do it to File:H2_tiling_346-5.png rather than to File:H2_tiling_346-6.png (perhaps you were misled by the digits in the title), I have made the adjustments that I thought appropriate. —Tamfang (talk) 04:27, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the correction. I must have had multiple windows open and edited the wrong one. Tomruen (talk) 21:05, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
