Welcome
Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:55, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

File:JSPWiki.PNG has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

When you use Delete, you must do four things:
- add Delete to the offending page with a reason
- create the Commons:Deletion requests subpage
- add the DR subpage to the Deletion Requests Log
- notify the uploader or creator.
This is most easily done by using the "Nominate for deletion" link in the toolbar on the left of every deletable page. If you forget any of the four, as you did at J-Free FM, it creates extra work for the Admin cleaning up after you -- he or she has to check to see whether the log or DR subpage was created.
In cases that qualify for speedy deletion, it is much simpler and better to use that tag -- it saves a lot of time for user editors. And thank you for contributing to Commons. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:27, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for the notice. However, I use the tagger script that automatically tags Delete. Besides, I am an active member of SWMT, which has Delete as its default tagging style. I would dearly try my best to tag with Speedydelete. Thanks anyway. Hydriz (talk) 11:31, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
A bon entendeur.--Sam0646 (talk) 13:18, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
- Ah, I see it is from a 1841 edition of a book, which means the copyright has expired. Will fix it now, don't leave Wikimedia Commons. (Sorry, I don't understand French, but based on Google Translate, that is what I think you said) Hydriz (talk) 13:22, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
- Oui c'est une édition de 1841, donc : the copyright has expired. Cordialement--Sam0646 (talk) 11:09, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
License reviewer
Hi Hydriz. I just closed your application to be a license reviewer as successful. Please review Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. Backlogs include Category:Flickr images needing human review, Category:Picasa Web Albums files needing human review, and Category:Panoramio review needed. Need your help
Hi, I just foolishly added a photo of Brian Downey (a musician who found fame playing with the rock band, Thin Lizzy. Everything else I did well, but when I downloaded it, and then renamed it from it's original Flickr title, I put the wrong photographer's name in the file name. It should read: File:Brian Downey by Alec MacKelliag 2011.jpg. Instead, it is "File:Brian Downey by Jim Williams 2011.jpg" Can you possibly delete it, and I'll upload the photo again, or perhaps directly upload from Flickr instead of saving it to your computer and then uploading, as I did? I'm lost on Commons, and can use the help!! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 08:59, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
- Don't worry too much about this error, stay calm as you go about contributing to Wikimedia Commons :). Anyway, if you would like to rename a file name, you can just add the Rename on the file description page, at the top to alert the administrators and File movers to help you move it to a new name. Please specify your new name of file in the template parameters. Thank you for your contributions to Wikimedia Commons still! If you still need help, feel free to ask me again. Cheers! Pics non free - imported by KevehTV
Hello.(Sorry for my english which is not soo good.) I'm french administrator on fr.wikipedia and I saw you checked this file file:Curtis-joseph.jpg, it's why i'm writing on your discussion page. I think this user (User:KevehTV) doesn't probably have the right on this pic he has downloaded : file:Curtis-joseph.jpg is the same here. I already have deleted 3 pics (in fact, all the pics he downloaded) on fr.wikipedia for non free licence. I will reward him there but can't do anything here. --Supertoff (talk) 23:19, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
- I have brought this issue up here for discussion among the others to see if they would like to delete this file or not. You can also join in the discussion and tell us what this user has done on the French Wikipedia. Thank you for notifying us! (P.S. Your English isn't that bad after all!) Hydriz (talk) 07:06, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
- I just joined this discussion and add one more link that, I think, prouve that the pic is non free. An another french administrator (User:TaraO) has warned me on french wikipedia, tks him ! (btw and tks, I'm not so bad in english for sure, but I really have problems with english grammar...) --Supertoff (talk) 07:35, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:10-1 certificate of service.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:10-1 certificate of service.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Copyright problems
When uploading a file to Commons, please check that it is free in both the United States and the source country, as explained at COM:L#Interaction of United States copyright law and non-US copyright law. For example, all Australian photos taken since 1946 are copyrighted in the United States. --Stefan4 (talk) 14:25, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:MiniHostels.Logo.mh.2.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:MiniHostels.Logo.mh.2.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Uploads and use of Own
Hi. When uploading images from Wikipedia, please don't just use the default description, because it's wrong. You're placing Own on all the images uploaded, even the ones where neither you nor the original uploader is the original author (e.g., File:Monkshood garyTonhouse.jpg). File:Jimmy Hendrix.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Metamucil Orange Sugar Free.jpg
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Metamucil Orange Sugar Free.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
