I just wanted to post a note here: I've spoken with Mr. Lipofsky and he is what he claims to be, an experienced professional photographer who wants to help us out. He's not someone just taking images off the web. His images are okay from a copyright perspective. If you have questions please go easy on him since he is new to this. Thanks. --Gmaxwell 20:11, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! that's a great image. I would like to thank you very much for choosing to share this image with the projects, it was very kind and thoughtful of you to do so. I understand (as an observer) that there may have been a few bumps in the process this first time around the loop but hope that they haven't deterred you too much, and that things will be smoother going forward. Again, thanks very much! ++Lar: t/c 16:09, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have requested protection of this image until the issues are resolved. See Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/Blocks_&_protections#Request for Image Protection. --MECU 02:07, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the awesome Jordan pic! If there's ever anything I can do for you, or if you ever need help with anything let me know. It really was a welcome addition. Thanks again. Quadzilla99 10:27, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Jordan by Lipofsky 16577.jpg deletion[edit]

Hi. While your photos are valuable to the project and I don't wish to embarass you, I've marked the image Image:Jordan by Lipofsky 16577.jpg for deletion because you've indicated that you don't want the visible watermarks to be removed from the image. This information is still contained in the image metadata and will be preserved without being visible. The issue is that the GFDL allows others to reuse images in creative ways, and a prohibition against removing visible watermarks makes this very difficult. I encourage you to reconsider giving permission for these watermarks to be removed. Dcoetzee 22:27, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have to say that this has become frustrating for me. Not only are people removing the copyrights from my images, but are removing the credit lines from underneath. I would have been happy to have people use my images on their non commercial web sites, so long as they are credited. I'm sure that the people that have all this free time to remove my credits are not going to chase all over the internet to ensure that my images have proper attribution. It appears that they would rather have no images at all to illustrate NBA players rather than respect my credit. I have enjoyed Wikipedia and had been looking forward to contributing large numbers of first quality images, but this nit picking has ground me down. cavics@aol.com

Hi, thanks for your response. I'm sorry to cause you frustration. I've withdrawn the deletion nomination, because it was hasty and rude of me to nominate so quickly. I'd like to make sure we talk things through first and see whether you're willing to consider allowing watermark removal.
I understand that as a professional you're accustomed to receiving visible credits right next to a photo where it is used, but keep in mind that that's in print — it's a standing convention on at least some parts of Wikipedia that authors are never credited in the article itself, but instead in the history and on the image description page. People who read Wikipedia know that if they want to know who produced an image, all they have to do is click it to find out.
If anyone attempts to distribute illegal copies of the image, without the image description page, the image metadata will help to track the author's identity. Although it can be removed, this is a more effective and less obtrusive way of letting people know who produced it than a watermark in the image itself.
Although we don't wish to put author information in the image itself or the article, it is strictly against the rules for anyone to remove author information from the image metadata or the image description page, where we very much want it to be, and if they do so I encourage you to revert these changes and protest.
I should also warn you that the license you chose, the GFDL, does permit others including commercial entities to use the low-resolution photos you supplied, with attribution.
Your photos are of excellent quality and we would be happy to respect the attribution of the image in both the metadata and image description pages. Rather than rush to delete, considering this is a contentious issue, I'd like to hear what you think about it. Thanks a lot. Dcoetzee 23:34, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I emailed him in the hope that he'll come back and make clear what he wishes us to do with the pic. I'd hate to see his pics get used in a way that upsets him. Quadzilla99 13:12, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Solution[edit]

Per Jimbo's statement on the outcome (to summarize): The image with watermark shall be deleted. I am proposing that this image be unprotected, reverted to the unwatermarked version. If you revert it to the watermarked version, or states otherwise that he wants it deleted, then it should be immediately deleted. Also, the caption shall be completely removed, and if you restore it in any capacity or state otherwise, the image and caption shall be immediately deleted and removed. --MECU 00:25, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Magic_Lipofsky.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Ok, just noted the above and will remove the deletion tag. However, you wrote "author Cavic" in the author field, but the author name is actually given by you in the EXIF and the filename. You wrote your name here, and so Cavic ≠ the author. As a question of accuracy I suggest to write the correct author name in the author field. If copyright was assigned to you, I dont know but it should be the case if you license the image, you may correct it to some wording like "author, copyright by Cavic". --Martin H. (talk) 02:43, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You maybe not see the need. However, at the moment I can reuse the image anywhere, for any purpose including commercial reuse with attributing "(C) Photo: Cavic, cc-by-sa/3.0". I dont think thats appropriate or intended. The image description page on Commons must give all information, a user is not forced to visit your website and search for attribution in the EXIF. --Martin H. Hello, Cavic!
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Commons-emblem-issue.svg
File:Erving_Lipofsky.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hi Cavic, as you asked how to add a license to this image: ff you want the same license as in File:Lipofsky-JDražen Petrović.jpg, then simply paste this cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0 ontot the description page. --Túrelio (talk) 19:06, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Šarūnas Marčiulionis photography[edit]

Dear Steve Lipofsky,

I saw that you have uploaded a large amount of basketball Hall of Famers classic photos to the Wikipedia, including Lithuanian legend Arvydas Sabonis. This year another Lithuanian former star Šarūnas Marčiulionis was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame and his photo is missing as well. If it is possible, maybe you could also upload his photo?

Yours sincerely, Povilas

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Thanks for uploading File:Lipofsky-Kevin Garnett.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hello Cavic, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
 • use in any work, regardless of content
 • creation of derivative works
 • commercial use
 • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.
