You seem to misunderstand the purpose of this page. The original image is rather big, and for most purposes a smaller version will be good enough, and will save on bandwidth and memory. --SPUI 14:12, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi could you do me a favour[edit]

I noticed that you add a category:door on Image:Gate Beijing Anglican Church.jpg, and then I find there are another cateory gate. I'm not a native English speaker and in Chinese gate and door is a same characters 门, so I con't differentiate these tow conceptes, could you tell me the diffrentation between them? thx!--Snowyowls 14:14, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Photos of Jersey Zoo[edit]

Hello, I am presently updating the Gerald Durrell page in detail. I also plan to update the Jersey Zoo, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and associated pages. I saw you have uploaded a photograph of Jersey Zoo. The photos on your user page are also fantastic ! I was wondering if you have any other photographs on Jersey Zoo or Gerald Durrell and whether you might be interested in sharing them on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. Thanks in advance. Pradiptaray 16:13, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a ton! Do you have photos of the grounds and the manor, including the Durrell statue and the memorial plaque? I was also looking for photos of some of the flagship low visibility species like tenrecs among mammals, reptiles and amphibians, the Nicobar Pigeon and Pink Pigeon, etc. Did you ever meet Gerald Durrell and photograph him in person ? Thanks again ! - Pradiptaray 11:52, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The photos are nice! I'll be linking them from the Durrell, Jersey Zoo, Les Augres Manor and Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust articles.

Art Deco[edit]

Hi Man,

I'm not sure about the Art Deco tag on Image:HenryMoore WestWind.jpg. No problem with it on Image:55BroadwayLondon.jpg as the interior of 55 Broadway is definately Art Deco, but the sculptures on the exterior are probably more like modernism. I certainly don't recall having seen early Moore being described as Art Deco. -- Solipsist 10:12, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Spirals[edit]

Hi,

I see you categorized Spiral_block_2.png in Spirals. Fine for me, but this piece of equipment, although defined as spiral in tech jargon, is actually a concentric groove. I will leave it as it is, you may decide whether to de-categorize. Ub 17:55, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

your message[edit]

hi! thanks for your message. yes, it's a bit confusing. apparently Basse-Normandie and Haute-Normandie both use the same flag. ok, which is apparently the historical flag of Normandy anyways. but apparently there is a flag with only two jaguars, and with three jaguars. and then there is a flag with a cross.... hm, does Basse-Normandie only use a flag with two jaguars? you're right, I think there could be a mistake.... Gryffindor 18:16, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

uh oh... so the three jaguars is only historical? Do we have an svg. image or png. of the two jaguars only? Thanks for pointing that out, I'll take a closer look into this and see if I can find anything that we can use and correct eventually mistakes. cheers Gryffindor 18:37, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I was curious about this image (which I took) being added to the wallpapers category... while I'm flattered, I'm not sure that this image is that great as a wallpaper as it's a hotel room not a nifty computer generated image like a lot of those cool images in the category. What do you think? Should I be concerned? Thanks! You can answer here, I watch. ++Lar: t/c 17:36, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the cat add[edit]

For the Wardlaw-Smith House, that is. I should have thought of it myself; I'm usually good about stuff like that. I'll go back and add it to a few others I've done. Plus there's more house pics I'm gonna upload in the near future, so's I can add that as well then. I'm with the National Historic Register WikiProject, and am trying to get pics of all the historic places down here in Florida. And most of them are houses. Or historic districts, with lots of houses in them.
Oh, crap, just remembered all the ones for the Ocala Historic District. Well, I was getting bored anyway. :)
Btw, I notice you also seem to be interested in heraldry somewhat. Neato! Bone swah, monn fray-yur. See, and I even parrlay voo the frankasey too, y'all. ;) --Ebyabe 21:11, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Query about Jersey[edit]

Hi, I wanted to say I enjoyed browsing through the Jersey pictures, a lot of which seem to have been uploaded/created by you! I was doing a bit of cleanup on the category, and was just wondering if there was a new category for "dolmens", would it be "Dolmens on Jersey" or "in Jersey" or "of Jersey"? Any preference? (See also the general confusion in Category:Dolmens by country). As for the above deletion warning - I'm just not sure. I uploaded a sign for a sportspark (Image:Cavan breffni park sign.jpg) and have put that up for deletion as well seeing that it has the sponsor's name on it in bigger lettering than the name of the sportspark :). Anyways - thanks in advance for your help. Kind regards, Deadstar 08:26, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures of Trooping the Colour - Could you please upload another one[edit]

I have posted this enquiry to the Help Desk at Wikimedia Commons.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not a Wikimedia Commons user. However, I am a Wikipedia contributor and my username on Wikipedia is FClef. I say that because I don't know if that name will appear on this signature.

I have a special request. Having largely authored and edited the article Trooping the Colour, I see that a number of pictures from Flickr were recently uploaded by User:Man vyi and have been used on Trooping the colour to good effect.

I would like to ask you, to please ASAP uploadthis picture into Wikimedia Commons.

It is one of Jon's pictures in Flickr and is on free licenses, with author attribution requested.

Not being a photographer or anything in that area, I don't have Flickr upload bot or the ability to do this.

Your immediate uploading of this picture into wikimedia commons will be much appreciated. The title should be Massed Mounted Band, Trooping the Colour, 16 June 2007. (I think it is this year, but please check. So long as the words Trooping the Colour appear, so I can find it on searches.)

Once it is in Wikimedia Commons I intend to upload it into both the Trooping the Colour article and also another article that I am preparing.

Thank you. --82.12.254.61 21:38, 26 July 2007 (UTC) damn! I see my signature doesn't work in wikimedia commons. In Wikipedia, I am User:FClef - please reply to my Talk page there - or just upload the pic into Commons and I will continue to check urgently for it. Thanks a million. xxx[reply]

Oxford[edit]

Well, you know how it is... you think "I'll just move those couple of photographs to the existing sub-category", and next thing you know you've sorted the whole tree! Thanks for noticing. Bencherlite 08:30, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Guernsey[edit]

This is a classic disambiguation issue. There are at least three subjects to disambiguate:

 1. the bailiwick of Guernsey
 2. the island of Guernsey (geographic entity)
 3. an administrative territory, divided in 10 parishes, which contains the island of Guernsey and the island of Lihou (and maybe some other little rocks)

Grounds that:

the subject of Category:Guernsey would have to be identical to Category:Bailiwick of Guernsey. That's why I made the last one in a redirection.

I have seen what you did in the English Wikipedia, but I think that is not correct in Commons, so if you don't agree with me, there will be a public discussion to arbitrate between us. --Juiced lemon 16:44, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

British Overseas Territories[edit]

Hello,

You have created Category:British Overseas Territories and Category:Architecture of British Overseas Territories, while the English Wikipedia article is British overseas territories.

Please, can you ensure the consistency of the page names (lower/upper case for initials)? At first in the English Wikipedia. Then, we'll do the job in Commons.

More, possible usage of the definite article in “object of (the) British overseas territories” has to be fixed. --Juiced lemon 18:38, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ta réponse sur le Bistro du 26[edit]

Bonjour !

- Amicalement - Marc ROUSSEL - --Markus3 16:09, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merci ! Ne faudrait-il pas par ailleurs mettre plutôt au pluriel : "zoomorphic figures" et "anthropomorphic figures", car Commons a par exemple "Churches in France" ou "Town halls in France". Amicalement - Marc ROUSSEL - --Markus3 17:45, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Advice?[edit]

Hi - noticing you as a prolific contributor and with some interest in this area do you have any advice for me on some uk cats? Specifically I set up Category:Archaeology of Dartmoor & then Category:Archaeology of Dorset with the same idea in mind and then added both to Category:Archaeological sites in Britain. Good/bad/terrible?? It would be good to get the views of someone who has rather more experience than me before I go too far (with other counties for example).

Equally I notice that on Category:Archaeological sites in Britain it suggests the naming should be "Archaeological sites in the United Kingdom" so any views there? Hope you don't mind, regards --Herby talk thyme 12:09, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks & appreciated. I'm not someone who is that bothered about naming either but I am aware that it can cause some warmth! I'll probably work around the West Country (indeed I could argue for that as a cat!) for now, regards --Herby talk thyme 13:02, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

oh, so we only enter sub-sub-categories of stuff?

and the category is supposed to have the sub-category inside it? CuteHappyBrute 10:46, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ok. only the things that specify.. i thought wiki is a giant of terrabytes and can cope with anything for the servers/pages

and yea, i categorize because people can browse the pic and use it. and yes few pics are categorized, i started categorizing from Wikipedia articles and they are endlessCuteHappyBrute 11:01, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

i don't know. i just don't like the look of superCategories maybe because of the maps and random stuff they have... plus they are really confusing.

i mean i was just looking for a Demographic Chart of USA and look where i stuck>>

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Demographics_of_the_United_States

to a superCat that wants me forcibly choose a state for its Demographics or browse through 456 items that all look the same. is that handy?> note that Category:United_States has only 112 Items. i know it's because of subCatting but still it's ugly and not searchable/browseable for the noobs. and you have to type keywords. i dunno. maybe it's me, maybe it's because it's the start of this wikimedia thing. CuteHappyBrute 12:11, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Links to the file[edit]

why doesn't it show where the file links inter-wiki-wise? from wikimedia to wikipedia? like for example this wikimedia file http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Ell-Makednos.ogg links to this wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makednos yet in the description page in wikimedia it doesn't mention this file linked anywhere =/ doesn't that suck? Help needed with the Valued images project[edit]

As you may have seen, this project is going live for nominations on 1 June, 2008 at 0:00 UTC. Before then, there are a few things to be finished off, and any help you can give will be welcome. The latest discussion is at Commons talk:Valued images candidates#Open action items for Valued images.

When the project launches publicly on 1 June, it will need reviewers who are able to jump in quickly and provide prompt feedback. During those critical first few weeks it will be important to have a decent number of reviewers who are prepared to put in the effort to make sure the first nominations are well-reviewed, as that will set the standard for the future.

Would you help, please, with the final tasks now, and also pledge your help with some reviewing on 1 June and thereafter? --MichaelMaggs 17:08, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Spotted you changing some categories & thought I would ask :) I've been working on the top level of UK cats for a bit trying to make some sense of them! Dealing with Coasts etc (and making, Cliffs, Beaches, Headlands & the like sub cats) got me thinking about "Inland waters of" or similar to contain Rivers, Canals, Lakes, Reservoirs, Waterfalls & the like. Mad idea or what? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:06, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well now like this maybe! We'll take a look at what happens now & I'll search around a bit. If you see any obvious areas where I'm making life worse do say. I think there probably should be a special section of hell for people who randomly do things with cats :) I like the random arrangements of "by alpha" & "not by alpha" that exist (I've tried to make "of England", "of Wales" un alpha in the higher level geographic cats - makes sense to me?). Equally - having been trying to sort out "People of the UK" - what are photos that are not "people" doing in that cat! Thanks for the views - cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:34, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In passing if you ever wanted the extra tools I would be very happy to nominate you. I fully accept they may well not be of interest however some cleanup work is more productive with them. Regards --Herby talk thyme 14:27, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Any ideas about this category - with 6K+ images in it is not what I would call useful though I understand the principle (not looking for work, looking for understanding :)) cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:43, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation of countries[edit]

Thanks for creating and sorting sub-cat:s, but we still need the overcat: to contain any eventual Pronunciation of France, Pronunciation of China cat:s for example. Man vyi (talk) 06:53, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was only created a couple of days ago, and isn't an overcategory. The overcategory is Category:Pronunciation of countries by language. I don't understand what "Pronunciation of China" would be used for, since "China" is an English word. In any case, I'm not sure how such a category would function, since most of the contents would be indeceipherable, so how would people know whether an item was correctly placed? --EncycloPetey (talk) 07:16, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Following the precedent of Category:Pronunciation of tobacco (which seems more consistent than, say, Category:Egg pronunciation), Category:Pronunciation of Germany works thus (unless it should be Category:Germany pronunciation like the egg). Man vyi (talk) 12:48, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I see what you mean, but I still have two concerns. Instead of creating a whole new category for Category:Pronunciations of Greece, why not just use the existing Category:Greece? Why do the audio files have to be separated from the other media?
Additionally, there is the problem will be that sometimes these English words have more than one meaning, and don't always match one-to-one between languages. What would you do for controversial categories like "Pronunciation of Macedonia", where the English word has four different meanings, and other language translation of the name do not always match all those meanings? The same is true of "Sicily", which is an island today, but was formerly a nation, or "America" which can mean "United States" or "the Western Hemisphere". And confusingly, there are two countries in Africa named "Congo", but the names aren't necessarily the same in other languages. And this isn't limited to nations. "China" means a country in English, but is also a kind of porcelain. Would the pronunciation of the English word "Wedgewood" go in Category:Pronunciations of China? How would you keep straight these meanings? The word "Argentina" is some languages is the words for "Silver", so would Category:Pronunciaciones de Argentina include words that mean "silver" in addition to the country? The Spanish word "Nevada" is the word "snowy". How will people know? It seems simpler to just keep the existing category structure instead. --EncycloPetey (talk) 17:05, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Instead of creating categories for these, why not use gallery pages like Sun? That way the specific meaning can be explained clearly on the page. --EncycloPetey (talk) 23:01, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User categories vs. regular categories[edit]

Hi Man vyi, thanks to this edit by you the user category Rr-bicyles was included in the regular category Bicycles. This was unfortunate as the category tree of user galleries must be strictly separated from the regular category tree. Any mixups are very confusing as user categories are hidden categories. See here for the associated policy. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 17:55, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)

Glass Church Images[edit]

This image is definitely not copyright free and any images in Categories: Jersey | René Lalique | Churches in Jersey | Angels | Saint Matthew churches are owned by the Church. Just becuase its a church people think things are free but the church has a considerable list of expenses to maintain this historic art deco building. If you wish to use any images in Categories: Jersey | René Lalique | Churches in Jersey | Angels | Saint Matthew churches you must contact the church office for permission. In addition please could you contact anyone you have given permission to use these images and ask them to contact us. Many thanks Glass Church.

That looks like a 1950's advertisement -- why would it be under a Creative Commons license? AnonMoos (talk) 05:48, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, sounds like there's no problem -- but unfortunately, the File:Right time holiday in Jersey.jpg image description page doesn't mention that copyright has been officially released by an organization (as opposed to some Flickr user who happens to call himself "Jersey Tourism" scanning in an old magazine, say), so it may look a little suspicious to those who are on the alert for possible copyright violations... Hello, Man vyi!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Photo use permission[edit]

I am writing from Common Ground -- a high school, urban farm, and environmental education in New Haven, Connecticut. Our students are currently wrapping up work on a series of outdoor interpretive exhibits for our site, developed in collaboration with the staff at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. You can read a little about their work atwww.commongroundct.org/lessons.php, if you are interested.

One of our exhibits will focus on different invasive species on our campus, and I noticed this great photo (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_Show_Jersey_July_2010_45.jpg) that you took. I was wondering if it might be possible for our students to get permission to use some of these photos in their exhibit. We would, of course, be happy to provide a photo credit acknowledging your contribution to the exhibit.

Thanks for your time, and for your great work. I look forward to hearing back, Evan Walker-Wells

Western Europe?[edit]

Seems odd to call Estonia "Western European". It's east of Poland, which is usually considered either "Central" or "Eastern" European, which makes it quite a stretch to call Estonia "Western". Is there some criterion here that I'm missing? - Jmabel ! talk 21:59, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd consider Estonia either "Eastern European", "Northern European" or simply "Baltic". (en-wiki uses the latter two.) I suppose a case could be made for "Central European", given some Hanseatic history. I personally think that latter case would be weak. - Jmabel ! talk 16:29, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

When removing Uncategorized-Geograph from one of the hundreds of thousands of images tagged with it, can you please ensure you also add a category which relates to the location.

For example, this loses the fact its in TL4558 (ie Cambridge). Thanks.--Nilfanion (talk) 00:13, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, removing Uncategorized is a feature of HotCat. Adding Category:Beating the bounds to the file I mentioned is also useful. However, if you could check the location at the same time (the source link back to Geograph should give you that), and use the ++ feature you could add Category:Events in Cambridge (for example) at the same time.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:48, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Channel islands etc[edit]

Hi, I have reverted the UK categories. You got a point there, but a) according to the loose definition (e.g. 1981 British Nationality Act) the CIs and Man are part of the UK and b) neither of them is a "country". So I added them to the UK categories because otherwise they would be harder to reach. BUT I agree that this is not quite correct. The most easily implemented solution would be a category "Animals of the Crown dependencies" for them all. The most pleasing solution would of course be to establish a categorization system that works with regions, not countries, but although we're working on that it will be some time 'til it is established fully.

The underlying problem is that even though we use the term "country" in all those category lists it should be (because it is used as) "independent state". This creates all sorts of mess if you think about Kurdistan etc, so I am all for a regional non-state scheme to deal with these cases. But it'll be a long time in the making. Alternatively one might consider the problem to be the use of "United Kingdom" instead of "Britain", but to change that would be a lot of work because so many categories are affected.

So, what do you think? Make the "Crown Dependencies" category, or simply remove the UK category again and deal with the fact that the content is less accessible until we have a regional scheme in place that fully works. It is not that bad actually, because they are all properly categorized in the "Animals of Europe" category. But this is not yet properly tied into the large scheme of things, as we're still debating how this should be done.

Feel free to revert my changes and/or create the "Animals of the Crown dependencies"/"Nature of the Crown dependencies" categories. I'll leave the choice to you and to anyone else interested; my concern is only that these categories can be reached by people who are not aware of the "strict" vs "loose" definition of "United Kingdom". I understand your reasoning, but I still don't see any connection to Ruscus aculeatus on your image? Can you explain? Hans 05:34, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Guernsey folk dance.jpg[edit]

We wanted to let you know that we've used one of your pictures in a project of ours: http://litpics.tumblr.com/post/7357574460/lit-loss-and-gain-by-john-henry-newman-pic-man

We created a computer program to generate random pairings of sentences from public domain texts and public domain / creative commons images. Some of the pictures we've selected come from the Wikipedia Commons. All the pictures we select ourselves, but the pairings and the text are random. Of these pairings that are generated, we only post the most interesting combinations.

We welcome any feedback about our site.

Thanks for sharing your pictures,
Samantha and Patrick

I would like to use the image "Milky Way", apparently a photo by Steve Jurvetson, but (apparently) delivered to Wikipedia by yourself, in a forthcoming book. Can you tell me what attribution would be appropriate? (I do wish this information were clearly indicated in Wikipedia itself...why do they make it so difficult to track down the source???)

Thanks.

Hope you don't mind me interjecting on your page, Man vyi, but ... We have several photos here that are about the Milky Way, such as those in Category:Milky Way, as does the English Wikipedia article. Which one are you referring to? You can see the licensing information for the photo on its image description page - if you are coming from the English Wikipedia, you can click on the image and then click on "view this image on Commons" on the image description page - that page should state the license under which the image is used. Thank You for the Wikipedia Pictures[edit]

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware pictures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Guernsey_cattle.jpg and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Castle_Cornet_Guernsey.jpg). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Flags of the Crown Dependencies[edit]

I've replied on my own talk page. SiBr4 (talk) 12:57, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Symbols of the Crown Dependencies[edit]

A few days ago, you reverted my removal of Guernsey and Jersey from Category:Coats of arms by country and Category:Symbols by country, respectively, pointing to a talk page. However, I already responded to your second post about the issue of the CDs at my talk page the same day you made it. Or is there another talk page where the inclusion of the crown dependencies in "... by country" and/or "... of the UK" categories is discussed? SiBr4 (talk) 13:18, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I thought we'd sorted it out that those countries that happen to be Crown Dependencies are not dependencies of the UK, and that the convention here is clearly to categorise them by country. Man vyi (talk) 17:05, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
From which of my posts do you conclude that I agreed with you that the CDs are countries and not British dependencies? Again, there is no universal definition of a "country", but a "sovereign state" is the least arbitrary one. If non-sovereign states are included in "by country" categories, there should be some guideline about about whether to include constituent "countries" (Aruba, Greenland), overseas integral parts of countries (Guadeloupe, Bonaire), uninhabited territories, Antarctic claims, etc. (unless there is some criterion to include, for example, only countries/territories that have ISO/FIPS codes, which wouldn't be less arbitrary).
The Crown Dependencies don't claim to be sovereign states and aren't recognized as such by any state (unlike, for example, the Cook Islands and Niue, which don't claim sovereignty but each have some recognition); the UN doesn't have any special relationships with them (unlike Palestine, Vatican City and, again, CI and Niue); and they are dependent on the UK, despite not being integral parts and being self-governing. SiBr4 (talk) 20:53, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't aware that any of us had suggested that the CDs aren't British. British and UK don't mean the same thing. We've demonstrated (and I realise that Commons doesn't require verifiable sources, but such sources may be helpful in explaining reality) that the UK and the CDs have agreed they have separate identities as countries. Interesting that you mention Aruba: the situation is somewhat similar in that Aruba and the Netherlands are both constituents of the Kingdom of the Netherlands - which doesn't mean that Aruba is a dependency of the Netherlands or vice versa. Certainly guidelines would be clearer, but at the moment we're working according to the consensus. Man vyi (talk) 09:26, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The difference between Aruba/Curaçao/Sint Maarten/Netherlands and Guernsey/Jersey/Isle of Man/United Kingdom is that the former four together make up the sovereign state of the Kingdom of the Netherlands while the four constituent "countries" aren't countries on their own (still defining a "country" as a "sovereign state"). The CDs and the UK may have a similar relationship, being some sort of constituencies together forming the Crown, though the UK (whose demonym is in fact "British", by the way) is a sovereign state while neither the other parts of the Crown (the CDs) nor the Crown itself are. Being neither countries nor integral/constituent parts of one, and being de facto dependent on the United Kingdom, the Crown Dependencies are generally seen as dependencies of the UK.
Also, what definition do you think should be used for a "country" in categories by country? Calling a place a country based on its separate language, culture, etc. would be rather arbitrary (unless I'm misunderstanding your statement about the separate identities of the CDs). Or would you call Hong Kong or Gibraltar (or any entity we agree is a dependency) a "country" as well? SiBr4 (talk) 16:31, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think you are looking at this as if it is highly complicated, whereas it is very simple. For the purposes of simple categorisation, it is entirely normal and widely accepted that the Crown dependencies are categorised along with countries because the role they play is very similar to other types of country (legislation, tax, laws). The categories on Commons exist only for the purposes of convenience, and not as an authoritative definition of the world. Danrok (talk) 17:46, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I still don't get whether you want to include all dependencies as "countries" or you think the Crown Dependencies are a special case. Danrok, why exactly is it "entirely normal and widely accepted" for the categories by country to include the Crown Dependencies? If the separate laws/legislation of the CDs would make them countries, then by the same logic Quebec and the fifty U.S. states should be listed separately. And if Commons isn't supposed to be authoritative itself, then what's wrong with keeping it consistent with authoritative definitions? Why would it be more "convenient" to categorize the Crown Dependencies as countries in this case? SiBr4 (talk) 19:05, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The simplest way of looking at the case of the Crown dependencies is by comparing them to the Commonwealth realms. Alternatively, if one looks at the British Islands, that might well be closest by analogy to the Kingdom of the Netherlands or the Kingdom of Denmark, in which a number of territories are dependent on the Kingdom rather than on a state. Quebec and Canada agree (for now) that Quebec is part of Canada; the US States are by definition constituents of the United States of America, and all agree on that. By contrast, Guernsey, Jersey, Mann and the UK are all agreed (there's not even any dispute in the matter between the parties) that Guernsey, Jersey and Mann are not part of the UK and have separate international identities (the Framework agreements were intended to set this out clearly). But the consitutional question aside, on Commons we have a consensus for convenience and you still haven't answered the question as to why you think symbols should be an exception to the existing convention. Man vyi (talk) 08:26, 7 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by "dependent on the Kingdom rather than on a state"? In the case of both the Netherlands and Denmark, the Kingdom is the sovereign state, not the similarly named constituent country. This doesn't apply to the Crown, because the Crown isn't sovereign, the Crown Dependencies aren't either, but the United Kingdom is. Even if the Crown was a sovereign state with the UK and the CDs as constituent parts, then it would be the Crown which should appear in "... by country" categories, not the separate Crown Dependencies (unless you have a better, unarbitrary definition for a "country" than a sovereign state). The CDs aren't comparable to the Commonwealth realms either, as all of the realms are sovereign states, which makes their relationship more like an international organization like the European Union.
I'm not aware of any consensus/convention about inclusion criteria in "by country" categories on Commons (if there was one, I wouldn't mind applying it). If you mean that almost all "by country" categories do include the Crown Dependencies, then it's probably because a lot of the individual categories were arbitrarily categorized in by country categories and nobody bothered to remove them (not only the CDs; I've seen some by country categories including California or Paris). Instead of asking me why I'm changing any categories by country at all (I'm not specifically editing the symbols categories for any reason except interest), you could as well explain why keeping the Crown Dependencies in these categories would be more "convenient" than just restricting all of the categories to sovereign states and removing the CDs from all of them. Also, you still haven't answered the question whether you want to keep dependencies like Bermuda in categories by country as well, or you want them to include only the CDs among the sovereign states, as most entities we agree are dependencies too have separate languages/cultures (again, unless I'm misunderstanding your statement about the "separate identities"). Mis-labeled photo[edit]

Hi Man vyi, Love the photos, and as you can see in the Coastal fortifications of Jersey wikipedia article, I am making use of many of them. In doing so, I discovered that this one: File:Dolmen La Ville ès Nouaux Saint Hélyi Jèrri églyise dé Saint André 2.jpg, has an incorrect description and comment. Thanks for the comment. Glad the images are useful. But I'm not sure what you mean about an "incorrect description": the description is general, I admit, but it's certainly one of a series of views of First Tower, taken in First Tower Park. Man vyi (talk) 04:44, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstars for you[edit]

For doing that crazy work of recategorizing images in main categories, like "100" and "2011". I knew there were others like me, but i hadnt run into anyone doing this until now. Please know your work is HIGHLY appreciated by me. The Commons is held together by the categorizing of its images. without that, we would have only keyword searches, which you know can be utterly futile in finding items, with file names like "grand old opry buff" for a water buffalo, etc....Mercurywoodrose (talk) 08:08, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your admin status[edit]

Hello. I'm a steward. A new policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus recently. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.   You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on nrmwiki, where you are an administrator. Since that wiki does not have its own administrators' rights review process, the global one applies.   If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights, and demonstrate a continued requirement to maintain these rights.   We stewards will evaluate the responses. If there is no response at all after approximately one month, we will proceed to remove your administrative rights. In cases of doubt, we will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact us on m:Stewards' noticeboard.   Best regards, Rschen7754 19:27, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Man vyi, I notice you haven't been around recently. I hope everything is ok. Best wishes for whatever you have moved on to, and thank you for your huge contributions to Commons over the years. --99of9 (talk) 02:39, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jersey has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this gallery, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Pay attention to copyright
File:Couscous harissa êtchuivée.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Bonsoir

--Als33120 (talk) 18:22, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
