Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:01, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Cornell Woolrich.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Cornell Woolrich.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Deletion nominations
[edit]Although it may seem that way, please be assured that the deletion nominations are not personal. However in future, please note the following:
Claiming to have self-created images that it is impossible for you to have personally drawn or taken is misleading. Credit your sources correctly and accurately. If there is historic or fair-use rationale for an image to be included in an article, upload it as a file on Wikipedia itself, not onto Commons - and make sure there are cast-iron reasons why it is required for the article. Material should have been published prior to 1923 to be open for Commons use (which is why most of the Thaw/Nesbit stuff is okay, although you should not be claiming that as your own work and ideally you need to correctly credit the sources). Taking a poor-quality snapshot of a picture in a book does not immediately make it your own work. You might find these useful to read through before uploading any more material.
All best, Mabalu (talk) 15:08, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
I understand the issues you have brought up. The image of the Chanel wear (1917) was not the best quality. I have a large library of books on art and fashion, and this was a photo I took from one of the illustrations. It was my understanding that images over seventy years old are in the public domain. My belief is that there are no copyright issues with such media. Also, if the original image is cropped, or otherwise manipulated---my understanding is that it is no longer considered the "original work,"---am I wrong about this? This was my rationale for attributing it as "my own work." I'm sorry to see so many of the images I donated marked for deletion. I would appreciate it if someone would work with me to retain the images in question. I'm concerned that I may not have the time to research these issues on Wiki and resolve them on my own. I would hate for the pages to loose these visuals. I feel that they enhance the text, bolstering the information.
- Hi - According to Wikipedia's own regulations, images must have been published prior to January 1st 1923 to be copyright free. You need to say where you got the images from. If you could take a clear scan or find a better image of the 1917 Chanel suits, that would be absolutely fine to use as a faithful reproduction of a 2D work of art that had been published prior to 1922 and is therefore absolutely fair use. (See my own upload of the Chanel hat - you'll see that I give the actual source of the image and where it comes from, rather than claiming it as my own work. That's good practice. The problem with the snapshots is that, being personal snapshots, they probably were not published prior to 1922 even if they were taken before that date. Do check the links I gave above where Wikipedia's policy is made very clear. Mabalu (talk) 23:42, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Copyright violations
[edit]
Hello Betempte.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |
Please be accurate and honest. If you were not the photographer and artist who created the original image, it is not your own work and you are not the author. -- Infrogmation (talk) 06:58, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

File:Serge Gainsbourg.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) - use in any work, regardless of content
- creation of derivative works
- commercial use
- free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.-- Infrogmation (talk) 12:32, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Looks like this might be derivative of something old enough to be PD -- but some actual info on source/authorship would be needed to make that determination. Infrogmation (talk) 17:55, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Not being a USA work, it cannot be "PD-US". It might be PD for some other reason, but some info like actual date, author would be needed to make that determination. Infrogmation (talk) 18:25, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
File tagging File:Gertrude Stein age 3.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Gertrude Stein age 3.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |
Again, some ACTUAL INFORMATION is needed. PD-US is dependent on first publication. "www.maps.thefullwiki.org" is not a particularly helpful indication of "source". "21 October 2012, 15:21:57" as the date is clearly utter garbage. Infrogmation (talk) 18:31, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

You have this "sourced" only to the front page of a website that looks like a blog and has a clear copyright notice. It's tagged as "PD-US", but says it was taken in Italy. If it was published in the USA before 1923, evidence is needed. Infrogmation (talk) 18:19, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Sert & Natanson.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
Similar problems to above. First publication in US? When? Actual source, not vague source to a blog? Authorship? Date? Evidence for free license? Infrogmation (talk) 21:10, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
