Hello,
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Your Flickr uploads[edit]

Hello

Thanks a lot for your contributions! Thank you for transferring images from Flickr to Commons! Two hints ahead:

  • Always upload the highest resolution of a photograph that is available on flickr
  • You can use this tool for your flickr uploads. It makes the hole procedure much easier and faster for you!

Thank you for your support! Greets, High Contrast (talk) 20:38, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you upload images from flickr you must insert {{flickrreview}}. All flickr images must be checked by trusted users or administrators and this certain tag makes this possible. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. --High Contrast (talk) 20:43, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Again, you forgot the {{flickrreview}}-tag in your uploads. This tag is essential! This tag must be put in all uploaded flockr images. Do not vandalize by not tagging your uploads! --High Contrast (talk) 20:51, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

--Stolbovsky (talk) 09:17, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Flickr2Commons[edit]

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). Thanks for uploading File:2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Football Park on Moscow’s Red Square 1.jpg.

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Football Park on Moscow’s Red Square 1.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

  • @A.Savin: Hello, why all files are offered for deletion? Did you really check their attribution? TASS is a state unitary enterprise. "The assets of unitary enterprises belong to the federal government" (Per WP — Unitary enterprise). That means that exclusive copyright belongs to the federal government of Russia and not to the original author (photographer). So you mean that Russian President Office violated exclusive copyright of the Federal Government of Russia? It is funny because the website of the Russian President states "All content on this site is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International".
--A.Savin 13:34, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

В. Путин; 26 декабря 2018).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Category discussion warning

Streets in Moscow Oblast by name has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Brateevsky {talk} 07:10, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Brateevsky {talk} 09:39, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
--A.Savin 10:18, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
--A.Savin 10:54, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
--A.Savin 12:36, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
--A.Savin 12:54, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Brateevsky: Ну и от вас жду комментариев по созданной A.Savin категории Category:Volokolamskoye Highway (Moscow Oblast).--Александр Мотин (talk) 09:00, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@A.Savin: Good morning! :) Fabrication of the grounds for blocking is the reason for the removal of the administrator status.--Александр Мотин (talk) 05:54, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As well as an indefinite block on two active Wikimedia projects is a reason for global ban, by the way. Especially if the same trolling is being continued on an other project. Regards --A.Savin 11:17, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see any diff with proof of vandalism, by the way. As soon as you present this proof we can continue the discussion. P.S. If the blockings you mentioned were not fabricated, then the discussion on Meta would have been started a long time ago :) I should remind you that for fabricating the grounds for indefinite blocking against me, one administrator of the Russian Wikipedia had already lost his status and still cannot return it in any way. I don't think you're tempted by that prospect, are you? That's why evidence is needed to take your threats seriously.

Brateevsky {talk} 08:33, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

--Brateevsky {talk} 08:55, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
--Brateevsky {talk} 09:00, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Districts of the Czech Republic--Александр Мотин (talk) 09:12, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
--Brateevsky {talk} 09:15, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ну вот из Московской области пример — Category:Districts of Moscow Oblast.--Александр Мотин (talk) 09:18, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
И английской Википедией это подтверждается (w:Category:Districts of Prague).
Brateevsky {talk} 11:45, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Brateevsky {talk} 10:56, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
п. есть ещё и такая причина — Category:Things named after Dorogomilovo.
--A.Savin 11:49, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Retired electrician (talk) 20:38, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

September 2022[edit]

I blocked your account indefinitely since you accused another user in threats of physical harm [4] but refused to support the statement by the diffs [5]. In case an unblock request has been filed let me add for the reviewing administrator that (i) the user is wikilawyering all the time, and libel for which they were blocked was part of this wikilawyering - for example, he has three or four users in the same thread saying that what he is doing is against the policies but he is fully convinced that he is right and everybody else is wrong; and (ii) he has already been indeffed with TPA revoked in his home project - the Russian Wikipedia - and in his second home project - the English Wikipedia - for exactly same behavior, and of course he now says that the bans were illegal, that he is right and everybody else is wrong. If he is unblocked, this behavior will continue here. Ymblanter (talk) 16:11, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ymblanter: The diff was presented above on that forum and I didn't say that there was threat of physical harm. I said exactly: "физическое" устранение. In English it translates as: "physically" suspend (from editorial work).--Александр Мотин (talk) 16:23, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the exact citation in Russian which you can see from the diff I presented on forum:

--Brateevsky 08:55, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
I warned you. Well, in the future I will negotiate with other Russian-speaking administrators to stop you physically and technically. --Brateevsky 08:55, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

What exactly do you not like about my remark? And I did not refuse to provide a diff since I provided it there as well.--Александр Мотин (talk) 16:35, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am afraid at this point your only option is an unblock request. I have enough experience to know that it is absolutely hopeless to convince you in anything, and even more hopeless to convince you that you have done anything wrong. Ymblanter (talk) 16:41, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ymblanter: Well you see the Russian text and you speak Russian as well. So what is the reason to leave me indef blocked? I didn't do what you're accusing me of.--Александр Мотин (talk) 16:43, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Unblock request declined

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without discussion.

Request reason: "I should be grateful if you would review this blocking and unblock me since Ymblanter does not want to give an explanation for his aggressive actions. I came here to work which is quite clear from my total contribution. I would also like to add that when Ymblanter is saying here that I didn't provide diff and that's why he indef blocked me he is again not telling truth because I did provide diff [6] which supported my remark on the forum. This is clear abuse of administrator flag. P.S. I ask experienced administrators to also evaluate this blocking for signs of "harassing contributors to the Wikimedia projects". I ask you to study the facts, if necessary, about the fabrication of the ban in the English Wikipedia by Ymblanter who is therefore considered to be involved administrator here on Commons. All links available here: meta:Requests for comment/Global ban for Александр Мотин."
Decline reason: "I am native Russian language speaker and I know very well that "физическое устранение" means murder. Accusing a fellow user of planning this, that is really harassment and libel at the very least. Given all the recent conflicts you provoked, you are definitely wrong here. --A.Savin 07:19, 1 October 2022 (UTC)"[reply]

@A.Savin: Do you confirm what I wrote with a link to the wiktionary? Please give an honest answer.--Александр Мотин (talk) 11:36, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Here is some other remarks in the Russian Wikipedia regarding "устранить оппонента" ("suspend the opposing editor from something") [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] Do they really say to "kill the opposing editor" since you stated that a word "устранить" means to murder someone? In order not to aggravate the situation you need to admit that you are wrong. This is a vivid case when someone really wants to suspend the user from editing who does not give a single reason for this. Completely unacceptable methods are being used. --Александр Мотин (talk) 10:51, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @A.Savin and Ymblanter: Secondly. As I said above the opposing editor Brateevsky made the following remark about me: "Well, in the future I will negotiate with other Russian-speaking administrators to stop you physically and technically". Yesterday I informed my colleagues in a telegram chat "Wikimedia in Russia" about this fabricated blocking. An experienced editor Kaganer said that this Brateevsky's remark ("to stop you physically") is "extremely unethical" (direct quote). Paul also said that if a user once to be indefblocked for this extremely unethical remark then there is a little chance to be unblocked. And what about you? How do you evaluate Brateevsky's remark? --Александр Мотин (talk) 11:58, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Third. I would really not like my blocking to be considered by administrators who recently allow themselves the following statements on Commons:
Ymblanter [13] ("Russian government go and fuck yourself")
A.Savin [14] ("Indeed, in recent months, I have greatly decreased the desire to do anything else for this fascist country...")
And you indefblocked me for my inoffensive remark («to "physically" suspend») after Brateevsky said he was going "to stop me physically". Maybe we will try to find some solution after all? --Александр Мотин (talk) 12:30, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Unblock request declined

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without discussion.

Request reason: "On the RfC page for global ban proposals the blocking administrator Ymblanter and the reviewing administrator A.Savin disregarded my request and refused to provide translation of my sentence for which I was indefinitely blocked. This clearly indicates obviously fabricated grounds for indefinite blocking since if they translated my sentence for the English-speaking colleagues then everyone would see that there are no grounds at all for blocking my account. In addition, several colleagues directly pointed out that in my sentence there is no evidence that I allegedly accused the opposing editor of threats of physical harm or murder. In connection with the above, the blocking of my account should be overturned.--Александр Мотин (talk) 11:41, 9 October 2022 (UTC)"[reply]
Taivo (talk) 16:38, 9 October 2022 (UTC)"[reply]

Diff. "Недавно, угрожая мне на моей СО "физическим" устранением," and Google translation: "Recently, threatening me on my CO with "physical" elimination," Taivo (talk) 17:05, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Taivo: For some unknown reason, you are giving only a small part of my full statement avoiding the full context. Here is the full one [15]:

Amazing things, however. Recently threatening to "physically" suspend me, Brateevsky argued that disambiguation for categories on Wikimedia Commons is bad, and now he says that villages must necessarily have a word "village" in their own category names. And why only villages then? At the same time, it should be noted that Brateevsky himself created categories like Brateyevo District but later he unreasonably demanded that I stop doing this threatening to "physically" suspend me. Colleagues, am I to understand it correctly that current attempts of A.Savin and Brateevsky to fabricate the blocking of my Commons account are certainly the realization of that threat? --Александр Мотин 15:24, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

If you insist on your version, there is nothing easier than to provide your own translation of my full statement. It is clear from the context that I never accused someone of threatening physical harm. But if you prefer to use a verb "to eliminate" instead of "to suspend" there is still nothing that proves your point, given the above context:

Everybody who is basically not a hard core controbuter should be eliminated from editing [16]
The proxies and AOL won't be immune but will probably be completely eliminated from editing [17]
He is banned and eliminated from editing [18]
If adopted, I'd be eliminated from contributing [19]
Their physical elimination from the plot is necessary [20]
The statement seems to infer that indeed two are eliminated [21] (from America's Next Top Model competition)

You can also clearly see that I used quotation marks for a word "physically" only:

I warned you. Well, in the future I will negotiate with other Russian-speaking administrators to stop you physically and technically. --Brateevsky 08:55, 23 July 2022 (UTC) [22]

And the most important thing is that if someone really threatened me, I would have informed the functionaries long ago.--Александр Мотин (talk) 19:24, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Since the user is continuing to misuse his talk page for trolling, and also, due to very likely to come Global ban, there is no point to discuss his block on Commons anyway, I would say let's revoke their talk page access too. --A.Savin 19:35, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Taivo: Look, several weeks ago A.Savin, Brateevsky and Ymblanter had already attempted to fabricate the blocking of my account — COM:ANI: Category:Brateyevo and Category:Brateyevo District. A.Savin accused me that I was allegedly "adding a looping category (making "Brateyevo District" both paternal and a subcat of "Brateyevo")". But look at what really happened:

  1. 21:46 UTC: I added Category:Things named after Brateyevo to the Category:Brateyevo District since reliable source says that the district was named after Brateyevo and added the official site of the district confirming this fact to Wikidata [23].
  2. 21:46 UTC: I created Category:Things named after Brateyevo and added category Category:Brateyevo.
  3. 21:49 UTC: I removed Category:Brateyevo District from Category:Brateyevo to eliminate (!) looping.
At that time the category structure had the following form: Category:Brateyevo DistrictCategory:Things named after BrateyevoCategory:Brateyevo. Do you see any categories looping? Now look what A.Savin had done:
  4. 00:13 UTC: A.Savin added Category:Brateyevo District to Category:Brateyevo.
  5. 00:16 UTC: A.Savin removed Category:Things named after Brateyevo from Category:Brateyevo District adding a commentary to his edit: it's not "named after". But RS added by me to Wikidata says exactly the opposite: "The name of this district comes from the village of Brateyevo". When I tried to restore the correct category structure A.Savin started edit warring causing the categories looping. When I saw that he was provoking a conflict, I avoided the edit war.
And now the current category structure is: Category:Things named after BrateyevoCategory:BrateyevoCategory:Brateyevo District. Is that right? Really?
Compare it to the existing consensus category system:
    Category:Ford TaunusCategory:Things named after TaunusCategory:Taunus
Category:Taroko National ParkCategory:Things named after TarokoCategory:Taroko (Place) etc.

And now look again why they demanded to block me falsifying the facts:

In both categories, an indefblocked long-term abuser from Russian Wikipedia is persistently editwarring: for Category:Brateyevo removal of the only one location category, and for Category:Brateyevo District adding a looping category (making "Brateyevo District" both paternal and a subcat of "Brateyevo"). I hereby request temporarily full-protection of both categories, or sanctions against the abuser. -- A.Savin 02:03, 17 September 2022

In principle, if I were A. Savin, I would apply sanctions to the user. Wikimedia Commons administrators have the right to block problem users from Wikimedia Commons. =) And the user, unfortunately, is problematic. --Brateevsky 14:53, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Now you clearly see that their idea was to fabricate the blocking of my account. I would like you to approach the issue objectively and impartially and unblock my account since this indefinite blocking is obviously fabricated, just as they tried to do it in the above case.--Александр Мотин (talk) 21:49, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

All this can be true (I even did not read that thoroughly), but you were blocked due to diff. This is not fabricated. Now I reblocked you without talkpage access, because you seem to be unable to understand, that such accusations are not allowed in Wikimedia projects. Taivo (talk) 06:23, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
