Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Thanks علاء نجار (talk · contribs) for adding a few of them. We're aware subtitles are not displaying properly on Wikipedia. It's a known bug that we're working with Wikipedia to fix. You can see the progress on that bug here. Are you able to continue to add our videos to arabic language wikipedia pages while we work on the bug, or would you prefer to continue adding our videos after the bug is fixed? Hedda Gabler rename[edit]

Code issues in User:علاء/common.js[edit]

Hi علاء, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

You edited User:علاء/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. Campaign[edit]

Hi Alaa,

When a user clicks on the "upload" link at the sidebar of Persian Wikipedia, they are redirected to fa:ویکی‌پدیا:بارگذاری. The first bullet asks the user to upload their free work to the Wikimedia Commons. It's link is https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard&campaign=fa&setlang=fa. Please note tha campaign=fa part at the URL.

This way, we can track uploads from the Persian Wikipedia to the Wikimedia Commons. Of course, if the user directly uploads their works to Commons, it will be very hard to track them.

Query is a good idea. However, the combination of Campaign and Query would be even a better idea.

It depends on the Arabic community. We are not going to do anything big. We are just going to create a campaign and some categories to track Arabic files easier. أهلًا @Mr.Karmi: وبجميع الأسئلة. بالنسبة لصور الشخصيات، فهي تختلف إذا كانت الشخصية حيّة لا يمكن رفع الصور إلا إذا كانت حرة، أي ملتقط الصورة يرفعها بنفسها أو يرخصها بأنها صورة حرة يمكن لأي شخص رفعها، ويجب إثبات ذلك، ويتم عبر البريد عادةً بمراسلة OTRS، أما إذا كانت الشخصية متوفية، ونفس الشيء ينطبق على الشعارات وأغلفة الكتب وغيرها، فهذا يسمى "الاستخدام العادل للصور"، حيثُ يمكن رفعها محليًا عبر صفحة خاص:رفع، ولكن يجب أن يكون معك صلاحية محرر أو رافع ملفات. أو يمكنك تقديم طلب لرفعها عبر طلبات الصور. تحياتي --Alaa :)..! 13:44, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

أهلًا @Tounsimc: وعذرًا للتأخر بالرد. عند رفع لقطة شاشة من فيديو على اليوتيوب، يجب أن تكون رخصة الفيديو ترخيص Creative Commons Attribution (يُسمح بإعادة الاستخدام)، مثلًا طالع الفيديو مصدر لقطة الشاشة الأخيرة في التفاصيل ستجد "الترخيص= ترخيص Creative Commons Attribution (يُسمح بإعادة الاستخدام)"، وبالتالي يمكن أخذ لقطة شاشة. أما الفيديوهات الأخرى فعادةً تجد ترخيص يوتيوب القياسي أو لا يُوجد ترخيص، وبالتالي لا يمكن أخذ لقطة شاشة منها. تحياتي وأرجو أن تكون الأمور أوضح الآن --Alaa :)..! 10:22, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting of file renamings in arwiki[edit]

Hello, Alaa, perhaps you could do something here? I assume I am not the only file renamer who more or less frequently gets a message about a revert in arwiki after a file renaming. It seems that someone or some people in arwiki has/have not understood the concept of renaming and the following action of the CommonsDelinker. Apart from being mildly annoying it’s also totally pointless. Last time I asked on the user’s talk page without a reaction (but others helped me then and reverted again), but writing on a rtl page without adjustment is a total mess, so I am not keen at all to do this again.
So, one point, as you are an interface admin, arwiki could have this: Hewiki has a button in the wikieditor, which is not perfect, but better than nothing (added by a default gadget for several buttons). Clicking on this buttons adds this: <div class="mw-content-ltr">…</div> with a marked Hebrew string between the tags, so one can instantly start writing and will replace this string. I noticed, though, that I cannot insert intentional line breaks. Additionally, nowadays the <bdi> would be better. (Now while writing I remember I noticed some time ago this script: meta:Force ltr, but this goes too far in my opinion, but I could check to only load it in edit mode; update: on a quick look the latter seems to work — 00:58, 23 June 2020 (UTC).)
For the actual reverts cf. ar:خاص:Diff/24995587, ar:خاص:Diff/45238870 together with ar:خاص:Diff/45252934, and now ar:خاص:Diff/48365917. I’d want to revert this again, but also do not want an edit war, and I could not well communicate with the people. I think the renaming system should made clear inside of arwiki (in the edit comment is by the way a link to COM:GR), and also if renamers revert again, this should not count as edit war. — Speravir – 23:31, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Speravir: , Thanks for your help on arwiki, and sorry for this experience. But I'd clarify that Arabic Wikipedia uses Pending changes system, so all users edits (expect autoreviewr) still pending until editor accept it, and as you know this system has few disadvantages, for example if user made vandalism then another user made good edits, so the editor can't accept the good one only, but should accept or refuse every edits. So based on this point: ar:خاص:Diff/24995587 + ar:خاص:Diff/48365917 (your edits followed by IP edits before editor review). About (ar:خاص:Diff/45238870 together with ar:خاص:Diff/45252934), yes you are correct and this refuse appear as misunderstanding the concept of renaming. So, I flagged your account with autoreviewr permission on arwiki, so your edits will be autoreviewed and no need to accept it by editor. Also, I'll put a note (with clarification) about file moving on arwiki Village pump (Done here --11:42, 23 June 2020 (UTC)). If you revert, it'll not consider as "edit war" until 3-4 reverts on 24 hours, also I don't think any sysop will block you, as your edits/reverts 100% valid.

About right-to-left issue, I can see that a lot of users have difficulties with it locally and globally and not only on arwiki. So I translated this gadget before few months that help on this point, especially if used on global.js page on Meta. But also I'll pass your note to see if arwiki accept use such things as default. (Thanks about meta:Force ltr, it's my first time see it)

Thank you for awarding this right to me. And coming from German Wikipedia I am familiar with the pending changes system; I just did not understand that I erroneously got reverted when reverting vandalism. I am a reviewer in dewiki, so this could happen as well, that I would revert, but afterwards I would apply this special change. Once, I do not remember, if it was a file change, but I mentioned the user with the good change in the edit comment afterwards – all in all there are several possible reactions. And thank you for your words at the Arabian Village Pump.

Regarding meta:Force ltr: In my global.js you can see that I intentionally let load it only in edit mode. I just now made a test in arwiki Sandbox, cf. ar:خاص:PermaLink/48425883. Is this OK for you, or more general for Arabian wiki sites? There is no html tagging at all, but it should help ltr users a lot. The BiDi script adds some css, is this added permanently or only for the user who uses it? ~~Somewhere~~ In <bdi>: The Bidirectional Isolate element (MDN) I read it would be better to use html tagging than CSS.

BTW there is another thing, that could be improved in arwiki: The Welcome box. Did you get one in hewiki? If not see he:Template:Welcome: It is multilingual and apart from the button info it has this useful hint (English version): “Also, don't use a colon (":") to indent text, but rather an asterisk ("*").” (Because the indentation on the left would not be visible, I assume.)

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Interwiki link W-templates[edit]

Hi, I ask you because I have no idea of Arabic. It would be nice to have a shortcode for an interwiki link, as many others exist, also for the linking from Commons to the Arabic wikipedia. The templates Wa, War and similar are used, so it may be an Arabic letter - either combined with "W" as W日, or one or two letters (like വി) in the meaning "link to ar:Wikipedia". Hi Alaa, I tried to create the template but I failed – whatever I did I could not compose the combination of وك with Latin letters, as is needed to establish the template; due to difficulties with the ltr/rtl write directions. So I made it simple, the template works now as {{WA}} (to distinct it from {{Wa}} and others), and it avoids the ltr problems. When you like you may create a template redirect with وك - I did not make it yet, because for me it would be almost unuseable.

Yes it's Persian, but I can't understand the user reason, as google said "Inaccurate content and user dissatisfaction", but in fact per COM:CSD#G7: Original author or uploader requests deletion of recently created (<7 days) unused content. For author/uploader requests for deletion of content that is older a deletion request should be filed instead. Older content (>7 days) may be used by external websites and would thus not show up in Special:GlobalUsage. So I think we'd let DR open for further comments. Hello. It appears that they are using File:احسان سرمست.jpg (and its DR) as a sandbox, since recent edits are likely to be test edits. As for the DR, I think it's not a test, because the reason provided for deletion is not meaningless (Google's translation is pretty much accurate). Although it's not clear to me how this file's content is inaccurate/false, it's possible that there are privacy concerns regarding its existence on Commons (since they said they are not satisfied with it). وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله عزيزي موسى، جميع لقطات الشاشة تُعتبر مُخالفة لحقوق النشر ولا يُمكن ترخيصها بشكلٍ حر ولا يُمكنك امتلاك حقوق نشرها، وحتى اللقطات المرتبطة بويكيبيديا وغيرها هناك قواعد وضوابط لرفعها بشكلٍ حر، ويمكنك مطالعة سياسة لقطات الشاشة على كومنز (بالإنجليزية، فالنسخة العربية غير مكتملة للأسف)، وهناك قسم فيها يتحدث كيف يمكنك رفع لقطة شاشة حرة، وأهمها أن يكون الموقع أو البرنامج حر وأيضًا أن تزيل جميع الأيقونات أو الموجودات في اللقطة والتي تكون محفوظة حقوق النشر. لاحظ أنَّ لقطات الشاشة ترفع عادةً تحت سياسة الاستخدام العادل على المشروع المحلي. تحياتي --Alaa :)..! 13:56, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

مرحبًا موسى، نعم ولكن فعليًا انعكاس موقع ويكي واند يعتبر لقطة شاشة للموقع، فأنت صورت موقع ويكي واند، والصورة تعرض أيقونات برامج مايكروسوفت أيضًا وهي محمية الحقوق. الفكرة أنك في الصورة وعند ترخيصك لها بشكلٍ حر، تكون قد رخصت تعديل الصورة، وبالتالي يمكن لأي شخص اقتصاص أيقونة برنامج الظاهرة في الصورة وترخيصها بشكلٍ حر من باب أنَّ الرخصة تورث. أيضًا هل شعار ويكي واند مرخص بشكلٍ حر؟ وأيضًا الصورة تظهر مقالة ويكيبيديا مرآة (حوسبة)، بالتالي أنت تظهر ويكيبيديا في الصورة. وهناك رخصة منفصلة للصور الملتقطة من ويكيبيديا وهي لقطة شاشة من ويكيبيديا. أتمنى أن تكون الفكرة قد اتضحت الآن أكثر. تحياتي --Alaa :)..! 14:09, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

مرحبًا @أسامه عبدالله هديان: المشكلة ليست بتحديد الرخصة، بل المُشكلة أنَّ الصورة معظمها منسوخة عن الإنترنت، أي لها حقوق نشر، وأنت بنقلك لها من الإنترنت (سواءً جوجل أو مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي أو أي موقع آخر) ورفعها على ويكيميديا كومنز، فقد خرقت حقوق نشر هذه الصور، وبالتالي تُحذف، فويكيميديا كومنز تقبل فقط الصور الحرة؛ والتي إما أن يكون مُلتقط الصورة قد رخصها بشكلٍ حر (إما ضمن أحد الرخص الحرة كالموجودة على ويكيميديا كومنز) أو وضعها في النطاق العام، أو أن تكون الصورة من التقاطك الشخصي. بالنسبة للصور، فإذا كانت هناك صور من التقاطك وتصميمك الخاص فيُرجى ذكر اسمها لي لاسترجاعها، مع العلم أنه إذا كانت الصور تتضمن أي شكل/رسم/خط محفوظ الحقوق فلا يصح أيضًا رفعها على ويكيميديا كومنز. تحياتي وعذرًا للتأخر بالرد --Alaa :)..! 10:50, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have seen that you removed my uploaded images and warned me although these were taken by me. I have made mistake once before as a beginner and happaneded to click "not my own work" although it was and I assume you took your judgement based on this. SonOfBabylon1 How "were taken by me" and I can found them uploaded on other websites since along time? For example, File:Martyr's Memorial in Baghdad.jpg used here on 2018, File:Baghdad Airport Road.jpg used here on 2020 and File:Qushla.jpg used here on 2 May 2021 (you upload it on 16 May 2021). So, we are taking about Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2021 in Tunisia, I see that there's more than 930 images uploaded, and the contest already started on 1 May 2021, and will end on 30 June 2021. 05 July 2021:Announcing the list of Juries in Facebook(If you accept to be a member of the juries you will need your full name,your nationality,your Wikimedia organization and a link of your photos in commons)
05 July -18 July 2021: preselection of photos;all jury members are welcome to choose the best photos from the competition and add these photos to the Category:Preselection Wiki Loves Earth 2021 in Tunisia (every member should select maximum 20 photos)
18 July-31 July 2021:Rating photos;every jury member will rate the preselected photos from 1 to 20.
01 August 2021:Online Meeting with the jury member to confirm the result and announcing the result in Facebook.

Commons Photographers User Group: first board election[edit]
